[attr="class","Mariustext"]There were many people in this foggy room, their faces obscured by masks and their bodies dressed up in beautiful costumes. Somewhere in this crowd of dancing and chattering people was Marius, dressed in a white dress shirt, a blue suit jacket and black pants. Their hair was tied into a ponytail and the upper half of their face was covered by a mask of which the upper corners sprouted into multi-colored branch-like antlers. These antlers were small, but hopefully noticeable enough for other people to figure out that their outfit was heavily inspired by a legendary Pokémon of Life: Xerneas.[break][break]Marius wasn't dancing or chatting with someone, no, for now they were observing how other people danced. Talking to others was no problem for the enby, but dancing... Dancing had never been something they'd been good at, no matter how much they practiced. As they observed some of the dancing people, they decided to try and mimic some of the easier-looking moves. Pretending to hold someone, they stepped forwards with one foot, and then stepped back again. This dance move was followed by a step backwards, but once they actually stepped backwards, Marius bumped into something or someone. They quickly turned around to apologize, only to realize they had bumped into one of the tall pillars in the ballroom. "That was embarrassing..." they sighed, "Let's hope nobody saw that."

Gabe may or may not have been addicted to swapping costumes at that point. He’d gone through each that he’d brought and was actually switching in and out of different ones just for the hell of it. He’d managed to surprise a few people by then by offering to dance and then mentioning a line he had previous only to slip away right after. It was all in good fun, or so he told himself as he made his way around.
Right then he a slim black dress with bright white bows across it. A black shiny shawl filled in over his shoulders and arms, and purple gloves now set on his hands. His hair had been pulled back in a single but large white ribbon in a similar fashion to the bows on the dress. A blue-eyed mask was all that covered his face then. He really loved Gothitelle’s fashion sense, heh.
He’d just finished a short dance with a somewhat bored looking dance partner and was now finding himself wandering around searching for someone else to sate the need— “Pffff” Gabe slapped a hand over his mouth as he tried to keep from laughing too loudly. At least the… Oh what was that costume, actually? Stantler? Uh…. hm. He felt bad for not recognizing it immediately. Stepping in quickly, he hummed out a: “You know, dancing is a lot more fun with a partner” before extending a hand.

[attr="class","Mariustext"]After a moment of embarrassment and confusion, Marius noticed someone was approaching them. "You know, dancing is a lot more fun with a partner," the person said before extending their hand towards Marius, who hesitantly put their hand in the stranger's. They quickly regained some of their (possibly fake) confidence with the thought of being taught a dance move or two. "Of course," they said with a slight smile. It felt nice to have someone ask them for a dance for once, though now they were slightly worried about stepping on this stranger's toes. Nah, they were gonna try their best to not ruin this dance.

A smile curled on Gabe’s lips as the – Oh wait those are Xerneas’s antlers aren’t they? Yes, he was going to go with that actually now, yes. Xerneas then— took his hand. “Wonderful,” came Gabe’s bright answer back. He’d lead a few steps out onto the dance floor before turning and clasping the Xerneas’s other hand.
Gabe paused momentarily for the reverberations of the music to adequately reflect their underlying beat before fluidly stepping back and pulling Xerneas forward. “Forward, left, back, right….” he hummed along with the beat to give his dance partner a little to go on as he moved. “It makes a square step almost.” He’d test out how well that base step was followed before adding on any more. There had been plenty that night already who had shown they couldn’t even quite follow that, heh.

[attr="class","Mariustext"]Marius followed their newfound dance partner, though they couldn't quite guess which Pokémon had inspired their outfit. Oh well, that didn't matter right now, following the dance moves their partner was making was much more important. Forward, left, right- no wait not right, not right! "I'm sorry," they quickly apologised before trying to get back in the flow their dance partner had started. So, forward first, then left, then backwards, and then to the right. Yes! That was it! Marius felt their lips curl into a smile. They were not failing miserably at dancing and it made them feel proud and confident, and not that fake kind of confidence that they usually tried to keep up, no this was the real stuff.

Oof not right… Gabe winced as a foot met his own. The quick apology had him forcing a smile back. “It’s fine,” he assured back. He wouldn’t have offered a dance to a complete stranger if he hadn’t been ready to accept the risks that came with that— or so he told himself, anyways. “Forward, left, back, right…” he murmured again moving a little slower this time.
Ah there we go… Gabe found a curl coming to his own lips as the stranger managed the steps and pattern this time. “Good, just like that, you picked it up quick.” Gabe hummed pleasantly. “Granted, I’d expect no less from someone depicting the grace of the life giving Xerneas.” He giggled. “Lovely choice of costume.” He kind of wished he’d chosen a legendary for at least one of his costumes, but that would have to be a thought for next year.

[attr="class","Mariustext"]Hmm, maybe they weren't as bad at dancing as they had always thought. They were by far not a graceful dancer, but at least they had quickly picked up on their dance partner's pattern of steps. Forward, left, back, right, forward, left, back, right, and so on. When their dance partner complimented their costume, their smile grew slightly bigger. "Thank you," Marius said, "You're looking very good too." They may not be able to discern which Pokémon their partner was dressed up as, but this person was definitely one of the prettier people Marius had encountered in their life, even if their face was hidden behind a mask.

A sly smile pulled across Gabe’s features as the compliment was returned in kind. “Thank you,” he mused briefly. “Gothitelle is one of my favorite Pokemon for aesthetic qualities.” He had plenty of other favorites, some of which he had dressed up as even earlier in the night. Litwick, Mismagius, Purrloin…. It had been so bothersome to change in and out of them, but he’d committed to it, and if there was one thing Gabe found himself reasonable good at, it was keeping commitments to himself (if no one else, ah, heh).
“Shall I look into our futures?” he teased after a moment. From the corner of his eye, Gabe caught sight of a pair moving a bit too close, and rather than maintain the step and be bumped into, he shifted them both out of the steps briefly and into something more circular— for only a second or two. The pair that was on the move brushed passed talking and laughing loudly.

[attr="class","Mariustext"]Ah of course, Gothitelle! Marius moved along with the Gothitelle, still following the same pattern of steps. They did need to focus a bit on not accidentally stepping on their dance partner's feet. "Oh?" Marius responded when the Gothitelle asked about looking into their futures. "Go ahead." they mused with a smile. Of course, Marius already knew what their own future would look like: Fame and riches! Or at least not the farm work or boring office jobs their parents had in mind for them. [break][break]When their partner suddenly moved in a different way than they had been dancing before, it took Marius off-guard and it was hard for them to keep up with the sudden new dance moves, even if those only lasted for a few seconds. "Why did you do that?" they asked both out of curiosity and confusion. Marius was already happy to have mastered the square steps, and they weren't sure if they could handle more than that right now.

Ah, if only future sight was one of his Psychic skills! Gabe smiled a little at the thought. But then of course being chained to that future in whatever form or fashion sounds like a whole lot of suck. He would rather believe each second of the future was determined more by the present and past than ordained by some unknowable force.
That didn’t stop a particular answer from escaping his lips as they shifted back into the regular step again. “As I was preparing to see deep into the future, I foresaw us knocking into a couple over there and decided to prevent it,” Gabe mused making a small head gesture to the other pair that were still on the move on the dance floor. “My apologies for the sudden change.” He chuckled.
A low hum escaped right after. “Deep in the future, though I see….” Well what could he guess about someone dressed as Xerneas in that moment and who had been dancing with themselves up until he had approached. “All eyes on you… performing a much more intricate dance than this with Pokemon…Giving life to a crowd.” He forced himself to keep a straight face right then, absolutely serious. “I’m standing in the crowd watching, of course.” He was probably off, incredibly off. There was no basis to go on, no guestimates he could make. He was not that Type of psychic— but somehow this was still fun.
[attr="class","Mariustext"]When the Gothitelle person explained that they saw the couple that had just passed by was going to knock into them if they hadn't moved, Marius was half impressed and half sceptical. They didn't believe this person could really see what would happen in the future, there were so many people here in this ballroom place that there was no doubt that people would knock into each other at some point. It was a fun thing that their dance parner was trying to stay "in character" as the Pokémon they were dressed as. While the dance continued, the Gothitelle spoke about Marius performing an intricate dance alongside some Pokémon. "That'd be nice," Marius smiled, "but I don't think it will actually happen." They followed along with the dance they had just learned, it wasn't hard but it wasn't exactly impressive either. "Thank you for teaching me some basics of dancing, I really appreciate it." Their smile grew wider for a second or two before shrinking back to a small one. They tried following and keeping up with the other's steps and so far is was going really well, at least compared to the kind of dancing they had tried before.

A small chuckle escaped from Gabe. “I tried,” he shrugged his shoulders softly. Not like he could actually see the future after all, but still, a bright one sounded better than nothing. The thanks thereafter, though, earned a bit of a softer look. “Of course, heh, glad to show at least a few steps,” he mused. “Couldn’t come to a Gala and not dance, right?” he grinned a little at that. Of course, there were plenty of people who had come just for the food and the mingling, but Gabe was not one of those people.
Though actually that led into another thought. “Did you come in with anyone or just come alone?” he asked passively. Considering he had been dancing alone, he would assume the latter, but one never knew (if someone got ditched or not, heh). “A few of my friends are in the maze right now. I might try it later.” At some indiscriminate time.

[attr="class","Mariustext"]"I'm here on my own" Marius answered, "not like I have any friends who would be interested in this anyway." More like they didn't have any close friends at all, but that wasn't something they were gonna tell this beautiful stranger about. Of course they always had Elbert with them, but they weren't very interested in letting the Pichu out of his Pokéball right now. "But what's that maze thing you mentioned?" Marius decided to ask in an attempt to change the conversation topic a bit, but also because they were curious about the maze.

Oh? That was a shame, but Gabe supposed these sorts of events only attracted a certain type of person— usually, anyways. He’d already run into the exception, not the rule, at least twice now.
As a different question was asked, Gabe perked up a little. “Ah, there’s a maze hosted by the Pokemon that haunt the manor,” he answered. “I think maybe a few people help out as well, but from last year, it seemed to just be Pokemon.” He hummed a little. “There’s puzzles, riddles, and things like that that you have to solve, and you get all kinds of rewards. Last year there was a lollipop that turned your hair different colors for only the time that you were eating it.” He chuckled a little on remembering that.
“You should try it out if you have time. The worst that happens is you get kicked out or…” Gabe paused and snorted. “Frightened, I suppose.” Because who was a scardie cat coming to a Halloween ball? Heh.
