For four years, Gabe had always sort of imagined Lizbeth would be his first Pokemon flight. She was his starter and was remarkably large for a Charmander. He could only ever imagine what she would be as a Charizard. All the Flying type Pokemon he had caught in the past were too small to be rideable, at least until recently when he had come across an actual Charizard out on one of the Routes. It had practically blown his mind to see one in person, and he’d been higher than a kite to actually capture it.
After that, though, Gabe struggled with mixed feelings. He didn’t want to hurt Lizbeth by riding another of her line, but Flying was efficient as hell which made it stupid not to. There was no way around that. He talked with Liz for a long while about it, and after that both talked to Rep, the Charizard in question. It was all kinds of messy in terms of conversation, but after a while of hashing out things, it was settled. Until Liz evolved, they would go forward with flight training for Rep.
And thus there they were out in the training grounds looking out along the flight course. Rep glanced sideways and made a low noise of impatience. Gabe fidgeted with his clothing before starting to try and figure out how to climb on. “Can you lean forward? Right like that… hang on… Ok. This works…” Swinging his legs around and managing to sit on Rep’s shoulders, Gabe leaned forward a little and took a breath. “Alright, let’s try this then.”

Oh holy fuck. As Rep’s wings slammed the air below them and he took a leap into the air, Gabe found himself scrambling and grasping for any semblance of support— which in this case was around his neck. Oh holy fuck… The Charizard coughed loudly and made a low irritable growl even as he started to climb, and Gabe could only squeak some vague apology back. The Charizard shifted around a little uncomfortably and beat his wings a little harder.
Slipping a little into the junction between the Charizard’s wings and his shoulders, Gabe gripped more onto his shoulders after that. Ok. Ok this was a good spot as any. They could just— Oh holy fuck they were in the air. The surge of wind that brushed passed them now took Gabe’s breath away momentarily, and he could only sit there clinging in wild awe of it all. They were flying! They were actually flying!
Gabe’s eyes flashed about one way and the next fixating on one course and then the next. “Through the poles,” he called. Rep growled a lot response but flew that way and rather quickly started weaving in and out of the long high poles. It was Gabe again gripping tight and leaning down over his shoulders. Ahhhh!!!!!

Whipping through the poles a couple of times, Gabe found a better grip with his legs, and Rep found it easier to tolerate a passenger on his damn back. Only after this did Gabe look around for another obstacle. Oh. Basically, the poles but up and down. He could already see where this roller coaster was going. He pointed it out anyways, though. They might as well go at it while it was safe, after all. Rep didn’t complain one bit now that he had good breath.
Upwards over the first bar and then down under the next. The sudden cut of motion had Gabe gasping and gripping tighter leaning down low in case the bar decided to be just low enough to knock him off. This one wasn’t near as bad after a few repetitions, though, and he couldn’t really say why other than that he was getting a little more used to it now. They went up a little higher this time and tried a mix of both obstacles which had Gabe clinging again and Rep irritably roaring for him to quit it. Why was he making this so difficult!
After that, they landed for a short bit and took a break. Gabe needed real land. Rep needed some breath back.

Thankfully once they started up again after that, it was altogether much smoother than before. It... actually turned out to be even pretty fun. Rather thans tay for only thirty minutes, they stayed for the rest of the afternoon. Go figure.
