Gabe wasn’t entirely surprised when Leonardo evolved. He wasn’t entirely surprised when he evolved larger than normal Blastoise. He’d been a big Squirtle and a bigger Wartortle. However, at seeing just how big he was truly after evolving, Gabe realized something very important: Leo was probably a good candidate for surf training. He was a turtle, technically, and with him being so big, his shell had a lot of extra surface area kind of like Lapras. Gabe wasn’t actually sure how smooth a ride that would be, but it was worth a trip to the training ground’s pools to give it a try.
Now at the pools with Leo half submerged in the deep end, Gabe realized something else: the hardest part of this task was going to be actually convincing Leo to go along with it. The Blastoise squinted at him menacingly, and Gabe smiled wider than usual. “Come on…. It would be good to be certified….” Gabe was saying for the n-th time in the last half hour or so. “I could either sit on the full back of your shell or up between your shoulders depending on what you want….” Leo squinted and let out a low rumbling sound in response. Gabe sighed and rolled his eyes. “What? What do you think I’m going to do with this other than ride you out on the water?” Another low note back.

“Listen, I’m not afraid of you,” Gabe stated tapping the front of his sandal down on the pavement just before the pool in an effort to make a point. “And….” An awkward pause wherein Gabe straightened his previously hunched posture and stared more squarely at the Blastoise. “I do trust you not to down me or anything…” he said a little quieter then. The Blastoise blinked and shifted up from the water some.
Gabe forced eye contact and smiled a little more. “I know you don’t like me. I know we have differences of opinion.” That was an understatement, but not one Gabe wanted to get into right then. “But as trainer and Pokemon… I trust you to get me through stuff.” Gabe smiled a little reaching back and playing with his hair some. “And right now I need your help.”
The Blastoise took in a slow breath and raised a little more out of the water. Gabe waited for a few more seconds, and sure enough, the Blastoise’s entire shell seemed to rise up after. Slowly, hesitantly, Gabe stepped forward and got on. His hands shook just a bit as he clasped the lining of that shell. But he had nothing to fear. The Blastoise moved elegantly through the water, swimming fluidly through the deeper and deeper sections of the pool, moving in and around obstacles with a general grace only afforded to those of the Water variety in their natural element, and it was good. It was good.
A lot… smoother than air travel for sure….
