"Professor Holly!" the voice of a young teenage girl could be heard in a large radius along with a banging of a fist on a door. "Professor, are you there? I'm here to get my first Pokemon, and your door seems to be locked." The girl hummed to herself, rubbing her chin as she was deep in thought on what to do. Luckily for anyone who may have had to sit through a solid five minutes of her trying to get the Professor's attention, she was actually quiet while she was thinking.
"I know!" But only while she was thinking... "This is a test of patience! A good Pokemon Trainer needs to be patient with their Pokemon." And so, the girl went down on a sitting position on her legs as she waited for the door to open. "Yes indeed. Patience is key for all Trainers! One mustn't be too hasty when it comes to picking a Pokemon! It's not like my Starter Pokemon's going anywhere, and do I really care what kind of Pokemon I get?" As the girl continued to ramble to herself, she tried to situate herself better so that her legs wouldn't hurt so much. Sitting on the dirt was a little uncomfortable, but it didn't seem to bother Charlotte! Nothing could, it seemed. Not today, anyway. The world could end at that very moment and she'd still probably be happy...
...Well, she'd prefer it if it happened after she received her first Pokemon, but life's not keen on prioritizing what we want now is it?
"Yes," she continued. "I'm so patient, my Pokemon's gonna love-" It was only at that moment when she noticed the "pull, don't push" sign on the door, something that caused the girl to blush quite a bit. "...me. Oh..." The girl glanced around before standing up and slowly walking over to the door, and pulling on the handle before stepping in. Well... to be fair, she wasn't really known for being too bright. "Professor Holly?" Charlotte called out as she looked around what she assumed was the receptionist area for any help. "Professor, I'm here to receive my first Pokemon! You here?"
[attr="class","momoPBody"] There was no receptionist working in the front area this morning, but once Charlotte called out from there, Holly did faintly hear her. "Hmm?" Ah, that must be Ms. Summers. She put aside what she'd been working on and headed out front to find a girl matching the description on her application. "Charlotte, yes?" Afterward, she gave a simple, "You're a little late," before leading the girl back into the main area of the lab.
"Your application opted not to go for our usual choice of starters, correct? So I don't want to hear you complain if what I've selected isn't what you were expecting," she warned the girl. "That said, I do take pride in my ability to choose starters that suit young trainers, so I hope it is to your liking."
She headed to the back of the room and selected a single PokeBall from the case, then returned to Charlotte. "Meet your new partner, Ms. Summers."

Charlotte’s glance finally met Professor Holly’s when she said her name. The girl instantly straightened up, clearly all too eager to receive her new friend, almost like a kid waiting to meet a group of puppies to adopt one. “Uh, y-yes!” she said taken aback. After all the effort she took trying to just get in the place, she honestly didn’t expect to find the Professor so quickly. “I’m Charlotte Summers!” She flashed the lady a smile before hearing the woman’s rather cold, but professional response.
Charlotte gulped in response of being told she was late, which clearly didn’t make her look very responsible. To be frank, she really wasn’t, but she didn’t want the person who was in charge of giving her her first Pokemon to know that! “Um, yes, well, I had a bit of trouble… getting in… with….” The girl paused for a moment before waving the thought off. “You know, the details don’t really matter!”
The girl listened to the Professor’s warning of not complaining if the Pokemon was not what she expected. Charlotte snickered. She had no idea the kind of person Charlotte was. “But that’s why I picked that option! Even if I was choosing between three Pokemon, I wouldn’t know what to choose because I’d wanna take them all! So, I simply had to only have one option. The fact that it’s a surprise is a bonus! I love surprises! Almost as much as I love Pokemon! You love Pokemon, too, don’t you Professor?” Charlotte giggled. “Well, that’s a silly question! Of course you do! Why else would you make it your profession? Is there such a thing as a Pokemon Professor that don’t like Pokemon? Nah! Silly Charlotte!”
The girl cleared her throat. “But yes! You made me even more excited, Professor! I just can’t wait to meet it!” The two entered the back room of the building as the teen clearly struggled to hold in her excitement. If she wasn’t talking, which she almost always was, she was squeeing at the different rooms in the facility. The rooms. With closed doors. All because she thought there might be a slim chance that a Pokemon was inside.
Fingers crossed that the Pokemon wasn’t too scared, or Charlotte might’ve given it a heart attack before they could actually go on their adventure.
Charlotte finally got quiet when they actually entered the room and the Professor grabbed the Pokeball. The teen waited with anticipation for the scientist to show her the first Pokemon that would be in her team. Once the Pokeball popped open, and a stream of light spilled from the Pokeball onto the ground between the teen and the Professor before forming into a small… yellow mouse. The girl stared at if for a moment and knelt down to it size… well as much as she could, the Pokemon was smaller than her shoe.
“Oh, sweet Arceus…” she spoke softly. “You are the CUTEST THING I’VE EVER SEEN!” She almost screeched that out which may have made the Professor, as well as the Pichu, uncomfortable. “It’s so tiny, I love it! Hello little Pokemon! Um…” Charlotte paused for a moment before realizing she had no idea what this Pokemon even was. “What is this Pokemon, Professor? I’ve never seen it before.”
It was to be expected, really. Pichu and its evolution line weren’t in the Pokedex of Charlotte’s home region, Unova. But, even so, there were plenty of Pokemon, including one from her own city, that she didn’t even know about. Again, not really known for brains.
“Oh, whoever you are,” Charlotte continued, as she moved to touch the Pichu’s ear. “It’s nice to meet you tiny Pokemon!”
[attr="class","momoPBody"] Oh... Merciful Arceus she was a talker. The younger kids were always hit and miss with Holly, but yikes. It took all her willpower to keep a neutral face and posture when she so dearly wanted to cringe. Still, with a deep breath, she was able to manage.
All the same, she couldn't help but be a little endeared at the girl's reaction to her new Pichu. Assuming the little mouse didn't mind her being a chatterbox, she was sure she'd be in good hands. She was a little puzzled by the tiny comment; she was about a foot tall, perfectly average for a Pichu. But she supposed it was pretty small compared to many other species.
"She's a Pichu," she answered the girl. "An Electric-type, and the baby form of Pikachu." Surely everyone knew what a Pikachu was? But she supposed it depended where she came from too. "She's also Shiny. Normally they're a little paler with pink instead of red cheeks." She smiled. "Feel free to give her a name." After giving Charlotte a moment to think on that, she asked, "Do you have any major questions? Or are you ready to get started on your journey?" She was sure to throw in that 'major' to hopefully deter questions like 'what's your favorite Pokemon' or 'is it fun being a professor' heh.

“...Chuuu…” The little Pichu rubbed her big ears upon hearing the girl scream, but seemed to quickly recover when the girl started gushing about how cute and small she was. Although she scrunched her face at Charlotte’s comment that she was tiny, the Pichu still managed to be rather curious by the girl’s eager attitude. “Piiichu?” The slightly darker colored Pichu tilted her head at the teen’s words and looked up at the Professor quizzically. Who was this person? Why was she talking to her? Was she another new Trainer that wanted a Starter? What was she there?
Pichu smiled at Professor Holly and placed her paws on her hips, grinning and nodding to herself in pride. “Pichu!” The Pichu seemed to grin even more at the mention of the name of its evolution. It liked being a Pichu and all, but it’d be so nice to… the Pichu winced as the girl started messing around with her ears. They still hurt from her screaming, and she tried to wave her arms to make her stop.
Unfortunately the girl was too blissfully unaware to notice the Pichu’s annoyance, so the baby Pokemon glared at her, the red cheeks on her face sparking, and suddenly the girl was zapped by electricity, causing her to yelp and immediately take her hand back. “Hey!” she shouted. “What was that..?” Charlotte paused when she noticed the dazed expression the little mouse held, clearly dizzy from something. The Pichu still had electricity dancing around her. “Wait, what happened? I was only petting you.”
The Pichu seemed to shake her head and glared up at the girl, waving her paws around in complaint. “Pichu! Pichu chu! Pichu, chu, chu!” The Pichu grabbed at her ears trying to indicate that her ears were still hurting before folding her arms over her chest.
The girl tilted her head, arched an eyebrow, and lowered herself more to the Pichu’s level. “Are you okay?” In response, the mouse stuck her tongue out at her before turning away. The girl glared at the mean behavior at first, but then looked a bit concerned. She didn’t want to make the Pichu mad, she just wanted to pet it. “Do you not like being touched, Pichu?” she asked with no response. “Well, that’s a shame… You seem like such a cuddly little Pokemon.”
Pichu turned to the Professor, pleading for her to explain to this moron that she didn’t want anyone to touch her ears at the moment. “Pichu, pichu!” The Pichu waved her arms around and pointed at her ears with a pained expression hoping at least Holly would understand.
The girl tilted her head at the Professor’s question. The teen pondered. Well, though asking what the Professor’s favorite Pokemon was very important, it seemed as though that would have to wait another day. Seeing as she just got zapped by a ThunderShock, another question seemed to pop up in her mind instead. “So, uh, is there any way to protect yourself from being shocked? That stuff hurts!” she whined out that last bit again, though Pichu didn’t seem to be affected by any squeaky sounds so long as they weren’t incessantly loud like that scream of Charlotte’s earlier.
“...A name?” Charlotte crossed her arms, trying to think. “Hm… I should give at least my first Pokemon a name, shouldn’t I? Hm…” Charlotte looked over at the Pichu, who seemed to have gotten over her anger, but still looked back at the human warilly. Charlotte tilted her head slightly, causing the mischievous Pichu to do the same, causing the girl to laugh and impulsively start scratching under the little mouse’s chin despite her previous promise.
The Pichu’s large ears perked up before a foot started lightly tapping on the ground, a smile slowly forming on the little Pokemon’s face as she leaned in to the bit of attention she was receiving. “Chuuu…” Pichu sighed a bit at this welcomed attention, and Charlotte couldn’t help but smile at this reconciliation of sorts.
“I guess you just don’t like being pet in the ears then?” That wasn’t quite it, but seeing as the girl wasn’t all that bright, she’d probably pet the ears again at some point. The Pichu ended up leaning so far into the petting that she ended up falling sideways to the ground with a light flop. The little mouse’s cheeks gave a soft sort of glitter as she lay on her side, still pleased by the scratch she got on her chin. Charlotte hummed as she grinned down at the little Pichu before picking her up and allowing the little mouse to sit in her hands as she looked up at the human in curiosity. "I think I’ll name you Sparkle!”
“Pichu?” the little mouse arched her eyebrows in confusion, not really sure what to think of that.
Charlotte’s grin widened and she winked at the Pichu. “You’re small like a little sparkle of electricity, and the name’s as cute as you are! I think it’s perfect! What do you think?” Sparkle seemed a bit unsure about this whole situation. She was this wacky girl’s first Pokemon? Did the Pichu dislike this, or the name Sparkle? Well… she didn’t rightly know about the girl herself yet, but the name Sparkle, now that she was squinting her eyes just so, had sort of a ring to it.
It took Sparkle a few seconds to respond with a smile of her own. “Pichu!” the little mouse squeaked in response and a nod before jumping off of Charlotte’s hands and sliding down to the ground, sliding down a strand of her hair. The teen was surprised by the action, which only seemed to please the Pichu as it then started mushing her face around, mocking both humans before laughing at the girl’s rather confused expression. This… would take time, but it seemed like they were off to a good start.
[attr="class","momoPBody"] Since the girl’s questions were directed at the Pichu now, Holly watched her and her new Pokemon in silence. Even as the Pichu implored Holly to explain, she remained silent. It wasn’t her place to be the mediator of a new relationship. That fell squarely on those involved.
Holly’s eyes flicked back up to Charlotte as the question was asked. “Learn to communicate with your partner as efficiently as possible, and she won’t lash out at you,” came the answer. Probably not exactly what any young trainer wanted to hear, but it was what they needed to hear.
As the bridge of communication started to form and the girl named her Pichu, Holly slowly shifted to look back at the work she still needed to get done. Walking over to a cabinet and pulling out a box, she turned and walked back “These are some supplies to assist you on your journey. Use them wisely.” With that, she handed them to Charlotte.

Charlotte thought a bit about what the Professor was saying about communication with Sparkle. The teen mulled this over to herself silently-
I’m totally joking! “Oooh…” she said, smiling before turning to her new Pokemon’s direction. She arched an eyebrow in utter confusion as the Pichu seemed transfixed on its position on not saying anything of any coherence back. That, of course, wasn’t Sparkle’s fault, but it made things… a little more difficult for Charlotte. “How do you communicate with something that doesn’t even speak the same language as you?” The Pichu was still messing with her own face a bit with her paws as she questioned this aloud.
Then something dawned on her and she smiled as an idea seemed to surface. Well, there was one idea…
The teen placed a hand on Sparkle’s forehead for a moment, causing the Pichu to look at the arm in confusion. “Pichu?” The little mouse wasn’t quite sure about this gesture, but due to the girl’s eyes shut tight, it seemed like she was trying hard to concentrate on something.
“If I can… just focus…” Charlotte grunted as she tried to focus, her blackened vision just barely catching a glimpse of a gold energy. “Al...most… ugh!” But just as she was making progress, her eyes instantly opened back up and she let out a bit of a growl. “So close! I know I’m starting to get the hang of this, I just know it!”
“Pichu?” The Pichu arched both eyebrows and seemed to look up at her new Trainer in slight concern.
Charlotte smiled sadly at Sparkle, showcasing the disappointment she had in herself. “Sorry, Sparkle,” she apologized. “I was hoping I could see your… energy or something, and if I could, it’d help me communicate with you more, but I don’t think I’m ready yet.” The teen hummed to herself in a bit of frustration. How else was she supposed to learn how to communicate with her Pokemon?
“Pichu…” Sparkle seemed to be a bit perplexed herself as she walked over by her new partner and sat down.
The teen looked down at Pichu and grinned a little before standing up. “Well, that’s what the journey’s for, I guess, right?”
“...Pichu.” Sparkle responded with a mere nod, though she kept glancing over her partner’s face, trying to decipher the girl’s intentions. Still, the teen picked the mouse up from its underarms and folded her arms over the Pichu as if she were carrying her like a puppy.
Charlotte then turned to the professor and smiled. “Thanks for your help, Professor Holly,” she said. “But I think that’s all the questions I have at the moment.” The girl was handed her supplies and the teen, in turn, grinned at the supplies she was given as well as the one who had given them to her, and nodded. It wasn’t a lot, but she was certain she could make due with what little she had! (Probably not, but how was she to really know until she tried, to be fair?)
“Ah, don’t worry, Professor!” the teen said, pretty much waving off Holly’s concern. “It’s just a bunch of Gym Battles, right? How hard could that be?” Considering the fact that she was just one teen girl who’d barely been away from her home her entire life and was about to go on a long and arduous journey with a Pichu, a baby Pokemon she didn’t really know anything about, things weren’t looking all that great from the get go. Perhaps, in hindsight, she should have started with a starter pack that filled her up with more supplies.
[attr="class","momoPBody"] Professor Holly frowned at the question. She didn’t say anything back, treating it as rhetorical and waiting to see if Charlotte would come to the conclusions on her own. What transpired was not expected, but once more Holly said nothing.
As Charlotte turned to her and assured her that was the last of her questions, Holly slowly smiled. “Alright,” she answered hoping to usher the girl out the door to begin her journey. Practice and life experience was a far better teacher than any person, especially for someone who believed Gym Battles were just anything. “You should be off now,” Holly encouraged. “Getting through Route 1 will require a lot of time.” Or whichever Route she decided to choose even though most chose Route 1.

The teen smiled at the Professor, and nodded at the woman’s suggestion that Charlotte should get going. Holly was probably right. Even if that wasn’t the case, if Charlotte wanted to catch all the Pokemon she could, she had to start somewhere. And like her mother always said, there was no time like the present! The teen made a gesture to try and shake the Professor’s hand, and may have shaken it a bit too hard due to how excited she was. “It was nice to meet you, Professor!” she stated with a grin before letting go of the woman’s poor hand. “Thanks again for all of your help! I’ll be sure to come back to Birch City, and maybe visit you at some point!”
Oh dear… that didn’t sound like a plan, that sounded like a promise! Good grief!
Whatever the case, Charlotte still had little Sparkle clasped in her arms as she headed for the exit of the lab. The Pichu herself still wasn’t quite sure how she felt about this new Trainer, but at the very least she had a feeling she was in hands that… didn’t have any bad intentions. That was… something. Still, it was hard to know if the girl really knew what she was doing… At least they seemed to have that in common, but Charlotte seemed to be even worse than Sparkle in that regard.
Sparkle squinted her eyes a bit before slowly forming a mischievous smile as the girl moved to open the door. Just when Charlotte was about to touch the handle, Sparkle’s cheeks sparked a bit and the two tingled a bit in electricity. It seemed as though Sparkle didn’t really remember that she was still not that good with her powers yet, but it didn’t seem like they were hurt at all. They did, however, cringe at the odd, tickling feeling that the static seemed to have. “Pichuuu…” Sparkle sighed.
It took about two seconds for Charlotte to snap out of it, causing the girl to glance down at the Pichu, who was already giving her a full on playful grin. The teen couldn’t help but laugh, and Sparkle snickered along with her as she pushed the door open, this time in the correct direction, and exited out of the building, Pichu in tow.
