Akane shuffled the strap of her bag across her shoulder, adjusting the lay of the rough canvas. The thing was heavy - no thanks to the unwieldy egg she'd shoved in between the layers of cloth and travel supplies. The alternative was holding it in her arms, which was unacceptable. She needed her hands free to navigate. And open doors. And potentially punch people. She was prepared for all possibilities - but only if she wasn't busy holding a pokemon egg.

With a frown of determination, she opened the door to the lab and marched inside. Standing in the entryway, she paused, looking around at the - almost - familiar setting. The aides running around, the books stacked neatly on their shelves, the computers running quietly in the background.... Akane exhaled, rolling her bare shoulders. She still felt odd without her lab coat. The lack of sleeves, the lack of formality...it was nice, in a way, but a far cry from what she had borne over the last several years. On the plus side, she was much more comfortable, and she'd had time to get used to the difference over the course of the journey from Johto. The climate of Arciel was temperate enough that her civilian outfit would fit right in.

"I'm here to see Professor Holly," she said, catching the shoulder of the nearest aide. The woman spared her a smile, a nod, and rushed off, leaving Akane standing mutely in the entryway. Akane reached up a brushed a stray strand of hair out of her face, tucking it behind her ear as she waited. She'd heard of Professor Holly, of course, but had had no reason or opportunity to meet the other woman. No time like the present. In truth, she'd much prefer to be here inquiring about a new job as Professor Holly's research assistant. Unfortunately, she was here to become a Trainer, and a trainer got their first pokemon from a Lab. So, here she was. If she thought of it in the context of a strange personal experiment, perhaps it would become more palatable.

The subtle click of low heels echoed in the lab as Professor Holly made her way to the front, her aide following behind her. “Akane Aragaki, I presume?” she paused only for a moment before nodding her head. “I have your Pokemon options here.” She raised her hand, enlarged three Pokeballs from between her fingers, and allowed the Pokemon themselves to come forth.

The click of heels on the polished floor snapped Akane's attention up towards the approaching Professor. Sharp brown eyes lingered on the woman's pristine lab coat before drifting up to meet the researcher's eyes. "Yes," Akane confirmed, moving forward out of the bare entryway. She nodded a curt greeting, pleased that the woman seemed like the no-nonsense type. Akane hated wasting time, especially in the case of an unpleasant task. Better off just getting it over with as quick as possible - like ripping off a band-aid. It would hurt either way, so why draw it out?

Moments later, Professor Holly had enlarged the three pokeballs that had previously hung on her belt. White light spilled from the open hinges, fading after a moment to reveal an Oricolo, an Ekans, and a Torkoal. An odd array of starting pokemon, to be sure. Akane mechanically identified each of them, taking note of the snake pokemon's startlingly large size. Her critical eye roamed over each of the creatures, her frown pointed. The Oricolo just looked stupid, and already it seemed like it would be a pain in the ass; the sassy bird was striking dramatic poses in between folding its wings and glaring in what was obviously supposed to be a blatant mockery of Akane's expression. The Torkoal was quickly filling the room with smoke from its molten lava plume, and seemed almost paranoid, the way it scanned the lab for potential threats. The Ekans seemed the least annoying, though it might have been the weakest of the three; the purple snake curled languidly upon itself, meeting Akane's eyes with a quiet sort of determination. She, at least, seemed as though she would be easy to train. Maybe she could eat the annoying egg in her bag, and then Akane wouldn't have to worry about it any more.

That thought was enough to decide it. "I'll take the Ekans," she noted - and just barely managed to avoid adding a sarcastic comment or an ungrateful rejoinder. She stretched her hand out for the snake pokemon's ball, abjectly ignoring the other two. "And while I'm at it, if you could tell me anything about the area, I'd appreciate it. I'd rather not run headlong into the wilds with no clue about where I'm going." Her parents had wanted her to try to become a trainer - but they'd not told her that she had to be stupid about it. A map would only get her so far; paired with a snake and an egg, she'd have to keep on her toes.

“Very well,” Holly answered returning two of the Pokemon before closing the distance between herself and Anake to hand over the Ekans’ ball. The question had her brow raising for a moment before clarification was given. “I’d suggest downloading the Arciel Mapquest app. It works on most mobile devices including Pokedexes and offers a variety of information on the location, geography, and Pokemon in the area,” she answered. “The GPS feature will ensure you will not get lost.”

A pause, and Holly was walking sideways to a shelf. Picking up a box from it, she returned again and held it forward. “These items are to help you start your journey. Use them wisely.” Handing over the box with a few Pokeballs and a few Potions, she paused again. “Any other questions or are you ready to start your journey?”

She nodded curtly as the Professor outlined the extra information about the Arciel Mapquest app. She'd figured as much; she'd really been hoping for some more personal information about the weather habits or biomes of the surrounding routes, but the info about the GPS feature was handy, too. If all that information was available on the app, then she wouldn't have wasted her breath laying it all out for an endless litany of snot nosed kids either.

Absently, as Professor Holly was talking, the Ekans slithered closer. Akane glanced down, allowing the Ekans to scent the air around her hands with the glands on its sensitive tongue; she didn't facilitate the effort, but she didn't discourage it either. Mutely, Akane took the pokeball and extra box of supplies that the Professor offered, already lost in thought and warring with her default state of annoyance. She reached behind her and dumped the potions and pokeballs into the respective pockets on her bag, trying to keep things relatively organized as she did so.

She grimaced when the Professor asked if she was ready to begin her journey, but squared her shoulders in the very next instant. She'd agreed to try, at the very least; there was no sense in crying about it now. "No, I'm good. I'm sure you're busy." The Ekans began to coil around Akane's leg in an effort to climb up her body; Akane forestalled the effort by activating its pokeball. Red light encompassed the pokemon before it could get very high, and Akane tucked the minimized ball into the clip on her hip. She looked back towards the professor. "Thanks," she offered shortly. She gave the Lab one last, lingering look before turning around and shoving the Lab doors back open, striding out into the wider world - Ekans and egg in tow.
