Jace had quickly departed the pokemon center after having finally finished registering for the Arciel league and was more than ready to get the heck out of Plum. He'd managed to slip away from his parents house the evening prior and had arrived at the center bright and early to get his registration in but the preliminary interview had taken forever and it was already nearly noon.
Jace knew his folks would be out looking for him by now and with his father's place on the police force it wouldn't be long before every patrol car in the area would be on the lookout. It'd be nice if he still had a bike, though his old one was much too small for him now since he hadn't gotten a new once since he was twelve.
However, running around town on foot would be way too slow. Jace cast a wary gaze around the parking area in front of the center and low and behold, a few bikes were parked in the bike rack right outside the front doors. Now obviously these must belong to trainers or potential trainers who were inside the center, but it looked like someone had neglected to chain their bike up. Jace glanced around seeing nobody at the moment in the immediate vicinity.
While he'd promised himself he wouldn't steal anymore, Jace was desperate. He hurried over to the bike then paused to adjust the pack on his back making certain it was secure. Said pack contained pretty much everything he owned or cared about plus an odd egg he'd discovered on his way to the pokemon center that morning. He then quickly started wheeling the loose bike away from the others when suddenly a shadow loomed over him, oh no, busted!
"Hey you there young man. Are you by chance planning to travel down Route 4?" A worried voice was not what he expected and Jace turned to face whomever was speaking. The stranger gazed at Jace with concern and held up a simple looking letter. "Please, if you're heading to Cherry Town could you please take this with you? I see you have a bike there and was hoping you could find a certain trainer who was headed that way. I'd be most happy to reward you for your time and efforts. Please young man, it is most urgent that this trainer gets this letter as quickly as possible."
Jace blinked at the stranger a minute then cast a worried glance toward the center. He quickly grabbed the letter from the stranger and nodded vigorously. "Yea, yea sure. I can do that. I'll go right now." He stated then hopped on the bike and quickly sped off in the direction of Route 4 not wanting to spend any longer in Plum than he had to.

As you speed down the way towards Cherry Town, you come across a lot of downed trees. There seems to have been a rather nasty storm the other day, and they haven't been picked up yet. Better be careful when navigating!
Jace skidded to a halt, throwing up a spray of mud in front of him. The male lowered the hood of his blue hoodie and switched off the cordless headphones he wore. These fallen trees were not what he expected to find and the male frowned as he tried to pick out a way through them. "This is not helpful at all." Jace muttered as he reached for a pokeball clipped to his belt.
"Hey Zag, help me out here." The ball burst open and poured out the familiar red flash that soon revealed Jace's partner zigzagoon. The shiny orange raccoon bounced around in the mud and yipped excitedly at Jace. The teen's tense face relaxed and he couldn't help a smile. "Zag, come on now it's not time to play okay? Think you can navigate a safe path through those trees ahead?"
The blonde male inquired hopefully as he watched zag's bright aura pulse with pure happiness. The zigzagoon darted from side to side in front of Jace as he bobbed his head vigorously. Jace chuckled softly then motioned forward. "Well go on then, and don't worry, it shouldn't be too much trouble to keep track of you." With as brilliant as the zigzagoon's aura, Jace wouldn't be surprised it if could be seen from orbit.
The little racoon yipped once more then darted off through one of the large gaps in the tree lines. Jace narrowed his eyes focusing on the aura trail Zag left behind and cautiously moved the bike forward, he didn't want to come unsteated or jostle the egg in his pack. Zag continued darting on ahead but Jace's unique skills made it easy to follow the zigzagoon's zigzagging path.
It might've been prudent to get off the bike and walk it through but the boy was in a hurry, both to get further from town and to deliver this letter. So hopefully his luck would hold out and they'd clear the trees quickly and in one piece.
There is a small branch that the Zigzagoon easily hops over, but it isn't so clear that's what it did. As you ride over it, it immediately crunches and splays rocking and shaking the bike off its balance.
Zag was moving fast and Jace hadn't really factored in things like protruding branches. He noted the aura of the zigzagoon darting up and down briefly but as far as the boy could tell it was just Zag jumping around like he'd been doing before. The zigzagoon was very energetic.
Next thing Jace knew the tire smacked into the low branch and he felt himself falling forward. Jace had been leaning over the handlebars a bit so as to increase his speed and hadn't accounted for being thrown off balance. The boy's hands splayed out in front of him and he did his best to break his fall without rolling over. He had to be certain not to crush the egg in his pack thus instead was forced to pretty much faceplant into the mud.
Up ahead Zag stopped having heard Jace yelp and a squishy thud. The orange raccoon hurriedly doubled back looking quite concerned for his trainer. He discovered Jace in quite an awkward position, rear in the air and forehead in the dirt, but pack still secure on his back, just slid forward a bit. Zag gave a worried yip and approached the boy cautiously. He sniffed the back of Jace's neck and heard a groan as Jace slowly pushed himself up.
The boy's blonde hair was covered in mud as was most of his face. His headphones however had slipped off his head and landed a few feet further away. Fortunately they were designed to be waterproof thus shouldn't have suffered any lasting harm as the mud would likely have broken their fall. Zag whimpered and nuzzled Jace's hand before running over to retrieve the headphones. The boy winced and raised one arm up to rub the top of his forehead.
"Ugh... what happened?" He muttered and glanced awkwardly behind him. The bike luckily was still in one piece just toppled next to where he'd fallen. Jace could see the protruding branch they'd hit and it almost seemed as if it was laughing at their misfortune. The teen grumbled and gingerly got to his feet. He couldn't tell if anything was broken but his head and wrists hurt. Hopefully it was nothing too serious as he still had a mission to complete. Jace looked at Zag and patted his head, "Oh, don't worry buddy I'm okay... I think."
He righted the bike and gave it a quick once over not seeing any harm done. The tires looked intact, didn't seem like the branch had busted or bent them, just been enough to knock the bike off balance and unseat him. Jace sighed and quickly checked on the egg before climbing back on the bike. As soon as they found a stream or other such water source he'd try to rinse some of this muck off. Until then, Jace moved at a bit slower pace, once again letting Zag lead the way through the remainder of the trees.

As you ride on a bit slower and more cautiously, you come out of the downed tree portion a bit shaky but otherwise fine. Unfortunately, you would see that the winter storm had also brought along a questionable looking Froslass who was walking around freezing things solid. She looks at you coldly and immediately starts shooting ice your way.
Zag easily cleared the last of the trees, his aura trail guiding Jace through the rest. While the boy was still developing this unusual ability, he'd had it pretty much his entire life. As a child, whenever he tried to tell his parents about the bright funny colors he saw around people, they'd simply laugh and assume he was telling tales. Though it wasn't until his pre-teens he really began to figure out how to control it and after he stole Zag and began working more with his old gang was when he began to utilize it to his advantage and hone varying methods of control. However, Jace still often forgot one thing, ghosts had no aura.
The sudden jolt of ice that flew passed his head nearly gave Jace whiplash. The boy skidded to a stop once more, this time however a controlled skid. It was still difficult at times dropping the aura sight and switching back to his normal vision, especially if it was a sudden switch. Jace blinked and shook his head rapidly as Zag's trail faded and the icy visage of the froslass became clear. Jace's eyes widened and he gripped the bike's handlebars more tightly as he ducked to avoid another blast of ice.
"Ah shit. Zag! Um... see if you can distract it with Sand Attack?" Jace knew normal type attacks wouldn't have any affect on the ghost, and the earthy ground wasn't exactly sand, but perhaps a sudden splatter of mud and dirt might distract the froslass for at least a moment or two while Jace quickly tried to speed passed, hoping that one of those ice attacks didn't graze the pack on his back with the egg. Zag gave a yip then leaped in front of the froslass, kicking up a wild spray of earth before racing after Jace and the bike.

The sand attack didn't seem to do much at all! As you're racing forward you hear the soft cry of the Froslass behind you, moments before she freezes all the road around you- frozen and slippery, If you're not careful you'll be slipping around like you're on a slip and slide.
Yea, as expected that didn't go well. Jace watched the ground below him turn to solid ice. The boy quickly stopped pedaling and put both his feet on the ground and just let the bike slide, using his feet to try and keep it balanced. However he was picking up speed fast and the ice wasn't completely smooth.
Zag yipped at the froslass angrily then slipped on the ice beneath his feet and began sliding even faster than Jace. The orange raccoon flew past the boy giving him a happily grin with tongue lolling. Jace sighed and shook his head but focused on keeping the bike stable and trying not to hit a rough patch of ice or twist the bike suddenly. This was actually faster than simply pedaling so perhaps this would be a blessing in disguise as it were. Of course the froslass was still behind them and could very well chase them down if it was so inclined.
"Keep going Zag but be careful!" Jace called, watching the zigzagoon fly past him now scrambling for purchase on the ice. Though he still wasn't even sure where they were going, Jace wanted to keep moving as quickly as possible. Of course at some point he'd probably need to figure out why his pack was beginning to wriggle all about.

As you slide along the ice, the Froslass continues after you. She seems rather angry for some reason and keeps shooting ice attacks at you. One of them freezes your back wheel locking it in place and causing you to fall.
Jace had hoped to out run the froslass with help from the speed sliding on the ice provided, however the froslass had surprisingly good aim. As the back wheel became frozen in place Jace felt himself pitching forward once again. Jace resisted the urge once more to tuck and roll due to his concern for the fragile egg in his pack. However, it was only just now he became aware of something now crawling on his shoulder. With his focus split, in those few seconds he was in the air, Jace's brain could decide whether to do the typical human 'eww it's on me get it off!' reaction or try to break his fall with something other than his head this time.
Luckily it seemed this time help had arrived. Help in a form he was not expecting or recognized. A red and black blur darted out of the trees and slid across the icy mud. The large furry form arrived just in time to cushion Jace's fall though he nearly squished the creature underneath him. Quickly Jace rolled off his rescuer then frantically swiped at whatever was on his back. Zag had scrambled to a stop further ahead and was trying to make his way back the icy path to reach the boy.
Yet still the froslass was closing in, really Jace didn't have the time to be freaking out over whatever was on his back and figuring out what the red thing that had saved him was. However it seemed the red thing didn't like the froslass at all for whatever reason. It sprinted forward and lunged at the froslass with a slightly weakened Beat Up attack. It then darted away back toward Jace, though it seemed more focused on a saddle bag the boy had failed to notice when first 'acquiring' the bike.
Jace at last disturbed the thing on his back only for it to crawl further down his arm. He yelped until he realized it was just a joltik. The boy blinked then dug around in his pack for a second before realizing this was what the egg had hatched into. The joltik seemed nopulsed about the whole situation and simply desired to get away from Jace's frantic hands. "Huh, well hi Joltik. No time to get to know you now though, sorry buddy." Jace said hastily as he tapped the electric bug with a ball and waited for it to ping and grow still. He added it to his belt alongside Zag's ball.
Zag finally made it back to Jace and the bike and noticed the strange fox digging around in the saddlebag. It looked like the fox had just wanted to get at whatever was in that bag. Zag yipped at the fox who sneered back and went back to tugging on the saddlebag. Jace glanced up now too realizing what was happening. But he really didn't have time for this. "Hey! That's not yours!" Jace called as he grabbed another ball. Before he could throw it though the saddlebag ripped and two pokeballs tumbled out. The male blinked while the red fox sniffed the two balls then made a face and went back to the saddlebag.
"Would you quit!?" Jace said a little perturbed as he chucked a ball at the fox thing too. Due to being distracted the fox didn't manage to dodge the ball in time and was sucked inside. It wriggled a few times and suddenly burst back open. The fox growled but immediately went back to the saddlebag. It certainly wanted whatever was inside. Jace frowned then threw another ball, battling would take too much time. This time though the fox attempted to dodge while also yanking on the bag but failed. However the ball held on the second attempt.
"Zag! Let's get out of here, see if you can bust up that ice with a Tackle." Jace suggested as he gathered up the other balls. He'd figure out what to do with them later and what that fox thing was so desperate for in the saddlebag. Zag charged at the ice a few times hoping to break it before the froslass attacked again. Of course with Jace's luck so far that was doubtful.

The Froslass seems to have left for now, but the tackle of the bike seems to only chip the ice some. You might need a stronger attack or a different strategy.
Well that was a relief, looked like the fox thing had managed to at least run the froslass off, though the boy couldn't really understand why. Of course now the bike was stuck fast in the ice. Jace scratched his head as Zag did his best to attempt busting it free. Well, he did have a couple more pokemon to help out now. He'd didn't really trust the fox thing not to run off but maybe the bug could help.
"Okay come on out then Joltik." Jace asked as he released the bug back into their midst. Though the joltik had caught Jace off guard the boy could now get a good look at the electric tick. He crouched down a moment to look Joltik over. "Huh, you're awfully big for a joltik. But anyway, sorry about the freak out earlier, not having a great day so far. Hi Joltik, I'm your trainer Jace... and I think we're just going to call you Tic for now."
The boy introduced himself and Tic regarded him with a little confusion. However the bug was rather placid and was taking all of this surprisingly well for one who'd just hatched. Jace pulled out the pokedex and scanned the bug. "Okay, so Absorb and Fury Cutter. That might work. Tic can you try Fury Cutter on the ice there." The male pointed to the ice holding the back tire. Tic chittered and nodded as the large insect lunged forward and slashed at the ice. Fingers crossed this would work, Jace was eager to get moving again.

And success the bike was free! Jace grinned and looked down at Tic. "Hey not bad for a baby." The boy chuckled then looked up. Someone was approaching them. He raised a brow, great so now help shows up. The letter had fallen and slid a bit on the ice and the stranger bent down to pick it up looking confused.
"Hey, why does this have my name on it?" They asked Jace who shrugged. "Well someone back in Plum asked me to bring it to, well, you I guess." The male replied. The strange blinked in confusion then opened the letter. Their eyes went wide and they gave Jace an concerned look. "Oh dear. Well I've got to go. Um, thank you for bringing me this. I'm sure you were promised a reward of some kind. Are you heading back to Plum? I've got to get back fast but I'm guessing you're on your way to Cherry Town then?"
Jace nodded, there was no way he was going back to Plum right now. At some point he'd want to try and slip through the city and hop on the fairy to the mainland but for now he figured laying low in Cherry Town would be the best option. "Hey can you just send it to me there? Just to the Pokemon Center, um, for Jace... um... Smith." The boy added hastily only just remembering that was how he'd registered himself for the gym challenge. The stranger nodded and gave him a thumbs up. "Great! Well thanks again and good luck. Expect your reward'll be there waiting for you by the time you get to Cherry Town!"
The stranger waved then hurried off back in the direction Jace had just come from. The boy sighed and gazed on down the remainder of the route. "Well, guess we'll just keep going then. At least that's one job done." So Jace wheeled the slightly battered bike forward and let Tic climb up on his shoulder while Zag jogged on ahead. Maybe this was the start of Jace's luck turning around.
