Gabe had been putting off flight training for Toothless and Wishes long enough. Sure, he had other Pokemon to fly him about, but one never knew when they would be needed out in the wilds. That day, he had picked Toothless the Pidgeot to work with. The bird was just big enough to ride by regulation standards, and that meant flight training was a go. Now whether Toothless in fact wanted this to happen or not was debatable, but that was something they’d have to work out together.
Out just below the start of the flight course, Gabe stood stretching slowly. He was used to getting flung around by various ride Pokemon by that point, but not knowing what to expect made a perfect excuse to prepare for anything. After a moment of that, he fished out Toothless’s ball and released the large melanistic Pidgeot. The bird immediately flapped his wing and then looked at Gabe. “We’re going to practice flying today,” Gabe stated with a grin.
What what what what??? Toothless immediately fluttered his wings and started fumbling with his plumage. Gabe why? Didn’t you have Rep for this? He wasn’t even a great ride and what if he messed up or—
A hand touched the bird, and he froze again. “C’mon then,” Gabe smirked. Toothless slowly looked forward again.

Gabe wouldn’t let Toothless worry for too long. It didn’t do the Pidgeot any good, and Gabe himself was always on a time crunch of some sort. Walking around the bird, he assessed his wings and back. “Wings up,” he ordered. Blushing aggressively, Toothless raised his wings. Ah there we go… Gabe slipped in, throwing one leg over one side and sitting down across his back leaning just over his shoulders.
“Can you fly like this?” was the question. Toothless let out a strange noise. He wasn’t sure he could even move like this but… but… “Try,” Gabe ordered. Flapping his wings, Toothless found that he could move at least. “Good… ok… flap a little harder and see if we can get off the ground.” A call escaped from Toothless as gained just a little more confidence. “Alright, let’s go…” Ok. Ok. Ok they were doing this. Just like regular flying. Just like—
Suddenly they were in the air and Toothless couldn’t believe it had been so smooth. Gabe had instinctively leaned forward across his back and made the entire ascent up very easy all things considered. “Nice work!” Gabe’s voice echoed over the breeze as they trailed forward. “Get comfortable first!” They both… needed to.

Gabe would be lying if he said this was easy. For as strong as Toothless was, his ascent had been anything but smooth for Gabe himself. He was lucky to have been used to Reptar’s take off at least prior to this. Otherwise the entire thing would have been entirely that much more jarring and nauseating. There is something to be said about having wings and arms though, I guess… And just a bigger body in general.
The longer they flew, though, the easier it got. They practiced a few circles here and there and even went through the ring course once they had gotten comfortable enough. Definitely a different type of flight… But he’d get used to it. He had to get used to it.
Flight Training Toothless the Pidgeot. 106 Points.
