Gabe couldn’t say he was a fan of Plum City, exactly, but at the very least, the City Gym wasn’t devoted out outing his beloved Fire Typing in the way Bass City’s was. He’d been on Plum Island quite frequently since buying that property in Cherry Town, and Plum City just so happened to have more stuff to buy than Cherry did making it a place he on and off again frequented now. He’d passed the Gym several times now, each time with a reason to keep moving. Now, though, he finally came to a full stop to stare at the Gym doors before him.
A small smile quirked at the corners of Gabe’s mouth as he stepped up to the doors. He wasn’t a trainer by profession. He didn’t start his journey in the way so many young people did, but he did trust his Pokemon— more than anyone else. It would be a good exercise if nothing else, and with that in mind, he grasped the handle of the door and stepped in.
The darkness that immediately engulphed the area was enough to have every hair stand on Gabe’s skin, but he forced a smile as he looked around. Under a black light at the very front were the words ‘answer my riddles’ which earned a quirk of brow. “Hello? Anyone here?” he called after a moment.
A giggle could be heard as Sable watched the challenger that approached her. Oh, this was going to be so much fun! Shrouded in darkness as they both were, her giggles were bound to sound a little creepy, if not foreboding. "Well hello there! You ready to answer some riddles? It'll be a lot of fun!" she stated with a mischievous glint in her eye. Whether Gabe was ready or not, she was already spouting out the first riddle. "I may be simple, I may be complex; I may have a name, but no gender or sex; I am often a question, or statements as a setup; I tend to have an answer, 'til you find it I won't let up. What am I?"
As a giggle reverberated form within the darkness, Gabe’s eyes flashed about searching for the source. He found none immediately. Ready to answer some riddles? A small puff of air escaped from him. “I suppose I have no choice hm?” he ask-stated back. He wasn’t sure how fun it could be, but he didn’t have time to ponder that. He was already being given a riddle.
Wait a second- this was the easiest one in the book. What am I? “You said it yourself— you’re a riddle, or a riddler…” he answered with a small smirk.
Just like that, a lantern burst to life, illuminating one corner of the room. More giggles filled the room at the cleverness of this new challenger. "Good! That was an easy one~. The next will get harder so stay sharp!" Sable laughed, bringing a hand to her chin in thought. Hmmm, what to ask next... oh! Perfect! "Your next riddle is this: A doctor and a bus driver are both in love with the same woman, an attractive girl named Sarah. The bus driver had to go on a long bus trip that would last a week. Before he left, he gave Sarah seven apples. Why?" He'd gotten lucky with the last one, but Sable was really hoping she'd get to use the glitter canon this time!
The sudden flame of light had Gabe’s eyes growing, and a brief, wicked smile pulling across his features. There was fire in here? Hell yes. A small laugh of his own mixed with the giggles this time. Another riddle… How many were there, he had to wonder? What came after, though, had him pausing. Uh. Huh. A doctor and a bus driver… and— apples? Wait a minute— “An apple a day keeps the doctor away?” he asked the familiar Common phrase without thinking. Hah, he was pretty witty, wasn’t he?
Sable clapped as yet another lantern burst to life this time on the other side of the room. "Good job! Quite the clever one aren't you." Bummer, she was so hoping that the challenger would get that one wrong. Hmmm... what to ask next. Oh! This one was pretty fitting. Let's see how well the challenger did this time~. "Now for your third riddle... It can't be seen, can't be felt, can't be heard and can't be smelt. It lies behind stars and under hills, and empty holes it fills. It comes first and follows after, ends life and kills laughter. What is it?" This one was a little harder but maybe it would be enough to stump the challenger? Who knew, they seemed pretty witty already.
Ah I get it now… Would the whole room light up if he answered all these correctly? Or would the flames only ever illuminate the shadows on the surfaces? Either way… The question that came after pulled him from these thoughts. He… was sure he had heard that one before but couldn’t actually remember the punch li— death. No. That was…. that was probably way too morbid to be the answer. Besides death can be smelt from a mile away… Hah… hah…Gross. But… what could it be? He frowned drawing over any other possibilities that could be correct. Finally, he forced out a laugh. “I don’t know….” he admitted.
Poof! An explosion of pink glitter covered Gabe while a series of high pitched giggles escaped Sable. "Gotcha! The answer is 'The Dark'! I thought it was fitting since you're fighting the dark gym leader!" Sable giggled all over again at her cleverness. Although, two right one wrong wasn't too bad now that she thought of it. "That's three riddles! Six more to go, just how clever can you be? Don't worry, this one will be a little easier!" With that, Sable hummed a little in thought and spun around, not that Gabe would be able to see that. "Right, I got it! Why did Snap, Crackle and Pop get scared?" Oh but it was so much fun to get to cover the challenger in glitter. How much more fun would she get to have though? Only time would tell~.
In the dim light, Gabe could only really hear the sound of something going off. Immediately he straightened, his eyes flashing around for a fast explanation he wouldn’t find. Instead, what felt was…. something soft but lots of it. Gabe blinked a few times slowly reaching up and feeling through his hair. It was… sparkling a little now? The ‘gotcha’ earned a puff of air in response. “Oh?” Oh— Dark— That was… that was the answer to the riddle, hah. Ok. He really should have seen that but… whatever.
Six more. “Quite a few….” he commented. This thought would be put away, though, as the riddle was given, though. Snap, Crackle, and Pop? What??? Wait— Oh that was…. “Was there a cereal murder about?” he asked with a half-laugh.
Sable just giggled at the initial comment about there being quite a few riddles. "Well, nine lanterns means nine riddles! Simple as that!" Of course the riddle was just a little easier than the last and she was glad that Gabe enjoyed the riddle, judging from that laugh. Just like that, another lantern burst to life while Sable clapped for the challenger. This was getting good! "That's right! You're pretty clever, aren't you~," Sable laughed, cheering on Gabe before trying to think of another riddle. Hmmm... this next one should be a little harder. "For your next riddle, answer this! What is it that given one, you'll have either two or none?"
As another light flicked on, Gabe smiled a little. Ah, he always loved the light of a fire. He refocused, though, his attention on the riddle. What was it that given one, you’ll either have two or none? That… sounded mathematical. “Uhm….” Given one, you’ll either have two or none. Was it some kind of proof? But none of the previous riddles were like that… It had to be simpler than that… Was it another riddle? No that didn’t make sense. If you had one, you’ll either have two or none?? A Pokemon maybe? What Pokemon was two or none? A two or one? A Ditto? No that didn’t make sense Ditto was just one— but it could be two by being anything else? No that didn’t make sense. A small laugh escaped from Gabe. “I don’t know…”
Poof! Another explosion of blue glitter covered Gabe just as peals of laughter could be heard coming from Sable. "It's a choice!" She finally managed, more than happy to be able to cover the challenger with glitter once again. Oh, this was great fun! "For your 6th riddle... The more you take, the more you leave behind. What am I?" Would she stump the challenger with this next one? Whatever the case, Sable was already preparing the next round of glitter...just inc case.
The shower of blue glitter that rained down had Gabe reaching up and rubbing through his hair. It was going to take weeks or maybe even months to get all of this out. The answer had him shaking his head again right after. “That’s silly,” he answered. “How is a choice— you can have multiple choices!” Whatever. Whatever. The next one he had luckily heard of. “Footsteps in the sand,” he managed with a smile now. Two more… And then they could get to the actual battling part.
Sable just laughed as the challenger objected to the answer she'd given. "Ah, but a choice isn't a choice unless you have more than one~!" Another series of giggles could be heard as Gabe answered correctly. Four lanterns were now lit. Not bad~. How would the challenger fair with now three riddles left? "Alright! Three more to go! Are you ready?" Sable called out, grinning as she explained the 7th riddle, "What can be swallowed, but can also swallow you?"
What can be swallowed but also swallow you. Gabe blinked a couple of times as the disturbing image of a Swallot slammed its way into the front of his brain. Ok. Ok he doubted there was actual vore in this. That would… he…. wow. Yeah no. It had to be simpler than that, cleaner than that. There were ten-year olds that challenged these damn gyms. Wait. All of these so far had been word riddles on a technicality. So it should be— “Pride?”
Sable could almost make out the way the challenger was thinking about the riddle and clapped just as a fifth lantern flared to life. "Good job!" Two more riddles to go, hmmm, what would be a good follow up? "For the eight riddle, answer me this~! What has six faces, But does not wear makeup. It also has twenty-one eyes, But cannot see?" This challenger was pretty clever, but would he be able to answer the next riddles correctly?
Six faces, no make up. Twenty-one eyes, but cannot see. “Arietta Ostinato,” Gabe said aloud before he could even stop himself. He knew it was wrong. He had a feeling it was a die or a clock or something, but literally he could not stop himself from saying it. Six faces, one for almost every day of the week. And so many eyes on her but completely blind to how she was. It was her. Bitterness won that moment.
Sable was... at a loss for words. Was she supposed to know who that was? Oh... OH! It was that singer person from the idol group, wasn't it? Oh well, it was still wrong, no matter how creative the answer was. Another POOF would be heard as green glitter came shooting out at Gabe. "Creative answer, but no~, sorry! It's dice! Or I guess a single die in this case. Anyway! Last riddle!" Giggling a bit more, Sable hummed in thought. What to do, what to do... Oh! That would work! "This last one's a tricky one! I am something people love or hate. I change peoples appearances and thoughts. If people take good care of themselves I will go up even higher. To some people I will fool them. To others I am a mystery. Some people might want to try and hide me but I will show. No matter how hard people try I will Never go down. What am I?"
A rush of green glitter came down, and Gabe closed his eyes embracing it for a moment. Even if it came back to bite him in the ass later, he’d said what he’d said. Hah dice… Right. So that was what it had been. The last was a tricky one. Something people love or hate. Change people’s appearances and thoughts… Oh…. He knew this one, and a small smirk pulled onto his lips. “Age is just a number,” he answered. “Though my birthday is coming up soon…” He laughed a little at that.
Sable clapped and giggled as another lantern burst to life. This challenger was pretty clever after all! "Congratulations! You solved six out of nine riddles, that's quite the advantage for you!" She giggled, curtsying in her own way, "Happy early birthday by the way! Rules are rules, you won the challenge so now we get to fight! Challenger goes first as always. Let's make this an exciting battle, hmm~?" With as much light as was in the room, both would be able to see fairly well. Of course, there were still dark corners that she could use to her advantage. Hmmm, this would be a fun fight!
