“Hm….”
A teen’s dark pink eyes stared down at something with half lidded eyes, annoyance clear on her face. She glanced forward, keeping her rather tired expression as she did so. She then looked down and then back up and repeated once more before glancing down to a little yellow mouse that was on all fours, staring at the path in front of them with a tad bit of confusion on her face. Well, there wasn’t just one path, there was a fork in the road, so there was a decision that needed to be made, clearly.
But the Pichu couldn’t help but tilt her head and arch her eyebrows. Why weren’t they moving? Why were they just standing there? Didn’t they have somewhere to be? Weren’t they supposed to catch a Pokemon or something?
Charlotte let out a bit of a sigh as she looked down at her map, the piece of paper she was looking at earlier, again before flipping it around a few times before gritting her teeth and crumbling the ends of the map a bit. She then let out a groan in frustration. “How much ground do you think we’re going to have to make to get to the Weeping Forest?” the teen sighed, rubbing the back of her head. “I never thought catching a Ditto would be so hard…”
Sparkle glanced up at her Trainer before standing on her own two feet and mimicking her own motion of rubbing the back of her head. The teen glanced down at the Pichu and allowed a smile to form on her face in a bit of a laugh. She then folded up her map and placed it into her pocket. “Oh, I’m sure we’ll be able to find it one way or another. What matters is that we move quickly!” As the teen walked forward, with her Pichu walking alongside her, she unzipped her backpack to check on the orange egg that was resting inside. She ran her hand over it to see how warm it was. “We’ve wasted enough time as it is! Christmas is right down the sidewalk, and I’m not any closer to finding a Ditto!”
“Pichu! Pichu, pichu! Pi pichu! Chu chu! Pipichu!” Sparkle waved her arms around as she seemed to be trying to give her partner some encouragement. At least, that’s how Charlotte decided to take it since couldn’t understand what the little mouse was trying to say.
“You’re right, Sparkle,” she nodded. “There’s no sense in sweating it. The only way to get to Weeping Forest is by moving forward!” And with that, the teen and her Pichu did just that: moved forward.
Journey Commencing! Objective: Get to the end of Route 7 and reach the Weeping Forest with enough time to catch a Ditto before Christmas!

It didn’t take long for the teen and her Pichu to come across a Trainer playing with a Pokemon. The Trainer seemed to giggle as the little Pokemon darted around her, happily trying to run around as its Trainer chased it. However, the Pokemon in question was the thing that caught Sparkle’s attention. “Pichu~!” the little mouse squeaked, a pleasant expression on her face upon noticing the other Pichu running around.
Said Pichu stopped running around, ears twitching, and turned to face Sparkle before grinning in awe. The two Pichu were clearly pleased to see one of its own kind, though to the two women, the difference in color were pretty clear. “Oh wow!” the other Trainer said. “I’ve never seen a Pichu with a color like that before! Is that a shiny Pichu?”
“A shiny?” Charlotte asked a loud, clearly never hearing the term “Shiny Pokemon” before. Maybe the Professor had told her about it before, but the teen honestly couldn’t remember. “I don’t know about that, but I did hear that Sparkle looks a little different from a normal Pichu.”
“Oh, is Sparkle its name?” the Trainer asked with an enthusiastic smile on her face. “That’s a really cute name! Hello Sparkle!” The Trainer lowered her hand that had some Pokemon food in it toward Sparkle, and the Pichu sniffed at her hand before gladly taking one into her paws and nibbling on it. The Trainer then shook her head before saying, "Wait, did you just say you've never seen a normal Pichu before?" That question was completely ignored. Kind of rude of Charlotte, actually.
“Pichu~!” Sparkle Squeaked in happiness from the food she was given. The other Pichu looked over at Sparkle before looking up at her Trainer with sad eyes. Looks like someone was getting jealous.
“Oh, I’m sorry, Pichu,” the Trainer apologized. The Trainer took out another piece of Pokemon food, and the Pichu instantly snatched it and gobbled it down. The Trainer giggled and Charlotte and Sparkle stared at the Pichu in amazement. It only took a moment for the Trainer to notice. “Oh, yeah, Pichu can be rather… impatient. Don’t worry, she won’t steal the food from you now that she had a piece of her own. I’m Essie by the way, it’s nice to meet you!” Essie offered her hand to Charlotte to shake, and the teen eagerly obliged.
“Charlotte,” the teen introduced. “And your Pichu’s really cute.”
“Thanks,” Essie said with a smile. “So is yours! Say, my Pichu needs some practice with her electric attack, ThunderShock. Would you like to have a battle?”
Charlotte’s face scrunched a bit as she contemplated her options. Did she really want to battle right now even though she needed to get a Ditto for someone for Christmas? Well… Helping a Pichu work on its ThunderShock might be good for Sparkle learning ThunderShock, too, so… was it really a waste of time?
A decisive smile finally formed on her face before nodding. “Okay!” Charlotte vocally agreed. “I guess Sparkle could use some battle practice, too.” Considering this is her first battle. “So, uh… How do we start?” Guess Charlotte could use some practice, too.

“Alright, Charlotte!” Essie called out to the new Trainer and her oddly colored Pokemon. “This is just a practice battle, so there’s not too much to stress about. We won’t let the Pokemon get too hurt this time since I know this is your first battle, but at the same time I’m not going to go too easy on you when it comes to skill. Pichu is relatively new to battles, too after all, so she’s not even gonna know how to go easy on Sparkle.”
“Fair enough,” Charlotte agreed. “So how do we start?”
“Pokemon battles are straight forward,” Essie continued to explain. “The Trainers call out attacks, and the Pokemon use the attack they are directed to use. Now, Pokemon are pretty smart, but it may take a while for some to get used to the name of the attack. They might need practice with association with the name, but since Pokemon seem to understand our speech, it’s a lot easier to teach them than to teach a trick to a dog. However, Pokemon also have to differentiate which voice is their Trainer giving them a command, and sometimes that takes practice, especially if Pokemon have the same attacks.”
“Pichu!” Both Sparkle and Pichu vocalized their agreement with Essie’s statement, further demonstrating their understanding of the human language. It was very clear at that moment that though the two were the same species, they had distinct and different voices.
“Now, we can both call out our attacks at the same time, but obviously speed is what determines who strikes first,” Essie continued. “Pichu has been in one battle before, and she is pretty impatient by nature, but seeing as they’re both Pichu, it’s hard to say who’s going to be faster. You can use some non damaging moves to better your odds, but the best way to win is to actually cause damage, so make sure you don’t use too many of those.”
“Alright,” Charlotte acknowledged. “Call out attacks, damaging moves good, non-damaging moves bad! Okay, I’m ready!”
Essie was… clearly shocked. That was not at all what she said! “That’s… that’s not what I…” Essie let out a sigh. “Well, if you feel like you’re ready, then I guess we should start. Pichu, Play Nice!”
“Pichu!” the little mouse shouted with confidence as she ran on all fours towards Sparkle, who seemed rather confused by the name of the attack. Pichu then started clapping her paws together and dancing around happily to her own tune. The little Pokemon seemed to have so much fun giggling and prancing that Sparkle couldn’t help but play along. “Pichu chu! Pichu chu! Pichu! Pichu! Pichu chu!”
“Pichu pichu!” Sparkle found herself giggling after that bit of fun, but Charlotte seemed rather confused. What was the point of that attack? It didn’t do anything, it just made Sparkle giggle. Sparkle then stood up from her giggling, and was still kind of pleased with the fun she had. Meanwhile, Pichu was back at the other side of their little field, cheeks sparking.
“Wait, I don’t understand,” Charlotte voiced her confusion. “What did Pichu just do?”
Essie gave a confident smile. “Pichu used Play Nice. It put Sparkle in a state of security, so now her physical attack’s aren’t going to hit as well.” This revelation caused Charlotte to grit her teeth a bit, but she was still confused… weren’t non damaging moves bad? Then why would she use one? “Pichu! Use ThunderShock!”
“Pichu!” Pichu nodded at her Trainer, allowing electricity to form on her pale pink cheeks before discharging it at Sparkle. “Pi… chuuuu!”
The electric attack came in a stream and hit Sparkle right on the head causing the Pokemon to squeak a little. “Chu! Chuuu...” The little mouse shook her head before glaring at Pichu, now a little annoyed. “Pi! Pipi chu chu!” Sparkle didn’t seem to understand that they were having a battle.
“Sparkle, this is a battle, remember? You’re fighting each other!” Charlotte called out to Sparkle, causing the darker colored Pichu to tilt her head and then turn to face Pichu before giggling in a bit of embarrassment. “Alright, guess it’s our turn! ...Uh…”
“Sparkle’s pretty young, but she should know Tail Whip!” Essie shouted, trying to help the struggling Trainer. “Tail Whip will counteract Pichu’s Play Nice affect!”
“Oh, thanks!” Charlotte shouted back before turning to her partner. “Alright, Sparkle, use Tail Whip!”
“Pichu!” Sparkle nodded and then started to shake her tail back and forth, almost like she was trying to do a dance. Pichu tilted her head at Sparkle’s display, but her shoulders seemed lower a bit. Tail Whip had some affect on her, even if it wasn’t obvious.
“Sparkle! You use ThunderShock now!”
“Pi…” Sparkle’s red cheeks started allowing electricity to form and then she, too, unleashed a stream of lightning at Pichu. “Chuuu!” The stream of electricity made its mark, though it didn’t seem to annoy her as much as it did Sparkle.
“Hey, I thought you said Sparkle’s attack wouldn’t be lowered anymore.” Charlotte voiced her confusion.
“Well… it might as well not be, but ThunderShock isn’t a physical attack. It’s a Special attack, which means that Play Nice wouldn’t have affected it at all. I guess Pichu just has a bit more battle experience than Sparkle does.” Essie giggled as she said this. “I don’t think Sparkle’s going to win, but we can keep fighting if you want.”
“Hey!” Charlotte shouted, slightly annoyed. “Sparkle can still win! We’re not done yet, are we Sparkle?”
“Pichuuu!” Sparkle allowed a little (too much) electricity to dance around as she was equally as annoyed with Essie’s statement.
Essie gave a dainty little smile as her warning went unheard. “Suit yourself.” she shrugged. “Pichu! Tail Whip now! And then ThunderShock!”
Pichu nodded and started shaking her tail around like Sparkle had before, causing the Pichu to lower her shoulders a bit. Pichu then spread out on all fours and then let out another ThunderShock attack which hit Sparkle pretty hard this time. “Piii...chuuuuu!”
“Pichu!” Sparkle let out a bit of a yelp as the ThunderShock made a strong hit. “Pichu…” Sparkle glared at Pichu and was now getting rather annoyed with this.
“Guess Pichu just got lucky that time with a strong hit.” Essie explained. “That happens sometimes. We can stop whenever you like.”
“No way!” Charlotte persisted. “Sparkle can take it! Right Sparkle?”
The Pichu was hit a little harder than she thought she would’ve been, but ThunderShock was still an electric attack. Sparkle wasn’t too badly phased by it. “Chu!” The Pichu was still fit and ready.
“Good! Now use Tail Whip again!”
“Pichu!” Sparkle repeated the process of wagging her tail around cutely like she did before, causing more of Pichu’s guard to be lowered a bit. However, instead of waiting for another command from Charlotte, Sparkle started running at Pichu full speed. “Pi...chu!”
“Sparkle, wait! I haven’t said anything-” But before the eyes of Charlotte, Essie, and Pichu, Sparkle was enveloped by a large amount of electricity that remained around her as she ran. It was clear that Sparkle intended on ramming into Pichu at full force. “What in the..?” Charlotte had never seen an attack like that.
Essie seemed to mutter something under her breath, causing Charlotte to look up at her rather confused. Essie snapped out of it, however, and brought her attention back to the matter. “Dodge, Pichu! Then use ThunderShock, again!”
“Pichu!” Pichu jumped out of the way of Sparkle’s incoming attack, causing the darker colored Pichu to tackle nothing but a mound of dirt. Pichu had electricity start to form around her, and again it was launched at Sparkle. It made its mark once again, and this time the little Pichu was starting to feel the pressure.
“Sparkle, you okay?” Charlotte called out, receiving a relentless nod from her partner. “You think you’re still up for fighting?” The teen was losing her confidence in this cause a bit, but even though Sparkle was feeling the tiniest bit tired, the little Pokemon wasn’t about to give up yet. “Alright… we’ll keep going! Use Tail Whip one more time! And then… whatever attack that was that you used last time...”
Sparkle glanced over at her Trainer and tilted her head at the last part. “Volt Tackle!” Essie, still the helpful little teacher as she ever was, called out to assist.
“What?” Charlotte called back in confusion.
“That attack was Volt Tackle! Tell Sparkle to use Volt Tackle!”
“Oh, thanks!” Charlotte brought her attention back to Sparkle. “Okay, Sparkle, Tail Whip and then Volt Tackle!”
“Pichu!” Pichu repeated her Tail Whip attack, causing Pichu to lower her shoulders down more than ever, and then Sparkle started running forward at full speed once again. “Pichu... Pichu... Pichu pichu pichu pichu pichu!” The electricity built up again and Sparkle’s Volt Tackle was aimed right for Pichu once again. Pichu let out a bit of a squeak as she instinctively tried to move out of the way.
“Pichu! Try to block it!” Essie called out, desperately trying to save the little mouse from fainting.
“Pichu!” Pichu tried to turn around to block her face with her paws, but it was too late. Sparkle his Pichu square in the stomach with the Volt Tackle attack sending the little mouse skidding to a halt instantly right in front of Essie. The little mouse was ready to fall over backward, but Essie was able to kneel down just fast enough to allow the little mouse a hand to lean back on. “Chuuu….”
“Pichu!” Essie called out frantically to the clearly exhausted little mouse. “Are you okay?” Pichu opened her eyes and squeaked out a little with a nod. Essie smiled at her little Pokemon before turning her attention to the teen.
“Sparkle!” Charlotte called out as a wave of electricity waved over her and made her cringe a little in pain. She was pretty exhausted, but she seemed to barely come out of this fight without fainting by a small margin. “That was amazing, Sparkle! I didn’t know you had such a strong move!” Charlotte let out a pleased sigh before cradling the tired Pokemon in her arms. “I didn’t think you could be any better, but you surpassed my expectations! Guess that’s gonna be a common thing with you, huh?”
“Pichu…” Sparkle nodded, letting out her weak response, and just leaned her head on Charlotte’s shoulder.
“Don’t worry, Sparkle, we can rest up as much as you want. Oh man!” Charlotte balled up her fist, a gleeful smile on her face. “I just can’t believe we won our first Pokemon battle! How incredible is that?”
"Chu~..." Sparkle grinned.
“You did pretty well for your first fight,” Essie spoke standing next to the teen. “You got pretty lucky with all of those Tail Whips. If you hadn’t used them, I’m not sure if Volt Tackle would’ve claimed you the victory.I'd be careful about using Volt Tackle too much, though. That could really hurt Sparkle, cause it causes damage on the Pokemon that uses it too. Not as much, but some. And that could mean everything to a Pichu.”
Charlotte smiled at Essie. “Thanks for the compliment!” she thanked with a grin. “And thanks for that battle. It was hard, but a lot of fun too! After Sparkle rests up a bit, I can’t wait to have more battles. But I'll try to keep what you said in mind about Volt Tackle. It seemed to have really worn Sparkle out.”
“Yeah, that’s the joy of being a Trainer,” Essie chuckled. “Catching Pokemon and Training them.”
Catching Pokemon… Oh sweet Arceus! They had to go! “Hey, Essie? Thanks for this fight, but um… could you do us one more favor?” Essie hummed but nodded in response. “Which direction to the Weeping Forest?”
“Oh! On your way to catch some Forest Pokemon, I see?” Essie asked the rhetorical question, and then continued before Charlotte inevitably tried to answer it. “You’ll want to keep down this path, and you’ll reach it eventually. There’ll be a lot of trees, obviously. You can’t miss it, by the time you get close you’ll have already seen it a mile ago.”
“Great! Thank you so much for your help!” Charlotte continued before running in that direction and waving back at the Breeder and her Pichu. “I won’t forget this!” And once that was said, she and Sparkle were off again, and their first ever Pokemon battle was behind them.
