Well Elizabeth had thought she'd been ready to take on the Bass gym but quickly realized a couple of her desired teammates were still a bit underpowered, at least when compared to their fellow teammates. Thus the ranger took to the Bass training grounds. These were the nicest of the grounds thus far, several indoor battlefields were provided for those who desired and in this weather it was a welcome relief. The girl was quite eager to get started as she entered the massive building that was a tad on the warm side. Her main focus today of course was Cecylia and Ayla, who had been working hard but the pair needed just a bit more.
The girl was accompanied by Tansy, Raya, Levin, Drago and of course Ayla and Cecylia. She found a suitable battlefield then turned to the group. "Alright! Now let's see, let's go over our strategies once more. Cee we'll be relying on your speed and electricity but water gyms like their water fields so we'll likely have little room to maneuver. Ayla you of course can fly so that won't be an issue for you. Your raw power is what we'll need but we'll have to make sure you can recover from ice attacks, lots of water types know those sorts of moves and they won't be good for you. Luckily ground type moves aren't too common with water types, and we'll try to avoid the mudkip line with you Cee."
The girl breathed a sigh and placed her hands on her hips. It felt good to be working hard toward a goal, it certainly helped distract her from the nerves. Why should she be nervous anyway? Honestly she felt less confident at the thought of facing a gym than facing down a poacher or other such opponent. Maybe it was the anticipation that was getting to her. Generally engaging against an opponent whilst traveling was spur of the moment. This she'd been expecting since leaving Cedar Town.
But either way, they were here now and Liz just wanted to do a quick run through of their plan then perhaps see if a trainer was available to challenge. It was always better to fight someone who had their own way of battling rather than relying simply on her own experience and knowledge. Pokemon battles were surprisingly social experiences. The ranger looked to the others then directed the selected teammates to the field. Raya and Levin would be sitting this battle out but could still provide for a decent cheer section.

"Okay! Now Tansy, here." The girl tossed the venusaur a large, ugly root. Tansy blinked and looked at it curiously. She raised the root with a vine then looked at Liz for an explanation. The ranger chuckled and gestured to the root then pointed to one of the high tech sim targets. "Try out your Giga Drain on that." She instructed. Tansy tilted her head to the side but did as asked. These fancy sim targets could respond as a pokemon would thus moves like Giga Drain could be utilized to their full effect.
The venusaur focused on the target and her flower opened and began draining energy from the target. She blinked as root in her vine glowed green and the replenishing grass energy seemed stronger than usual. The poisonous grass type looked to Liz with eagerness in her eyes. The ranger chuckled and nodded.
"Yep, that'll help keep your strength up even more than usual. The biggest challenge of the gym will be ensuring we make it all the way through. They can be arduous affairs so we have to be able to endure." The girl then motioned upward and looked to both Tansy and Ayla.
"And thus you both know Synthesis which is great at keeping your health up. It's too bad we don't have someone who knows Aqua Ring but I think we'll do alright with what we have. Speed is key, the faster we are than them the better though it would be nice to be able to slow them up." She glanced at Drago, Tansy and Cecylia then nodded. "But we've a couple things that should help with that. To win a gym battle you can't always fight fair." She explained. Now of course one followed the rules but in a gym battle you had to use every trick you could to win. The gym leader would most likely do the same.
She continued going over the plan with the group and then had them all line up with a target. "Go ahead and try out the moves that'll get the most use in the gym battle. Those are your moderate but super effective moves. Now Tansy you have at least three such moves, Petal Blizzard, Giga Drain and Sludge Bomb. Your strong move is Earthquake but that'll only be of use if you're up against one of the water types that has electric, poison, rock or steel as their dual type. Also I plan to challenge for a double battle so we can hopefully have you guys support one another. We won't be able to use Earthquake with Cecylia on the field. It won't bother Ayla or Drago though. It's a good thing they're both dual fliers."
Liz gazed at Drago a moment still not understanding how the sea serpent got his typing, gyarados didn't seem to actually fly. But hey in this instance it was rather beneficial. She continued. "And Sludge Bomb is mainly for use against any with a dual grass typing. Ayla knows Gust though if she uses Leaf Storm too early it'll render Gust powerless. Though..."
The ranger looked at Drago a moment now thoughtful. "You could probably use Hurricane by now, it's a strong attack that would give us another backup against a dual grass typing. I've at least one persim berry to help defend against confusion. Though of course the lotad line is the only one that's water and grass so it really shouldn't be a problem."

"Anyway, Cecylia you've Agility which we'll need to use at least twice to get you up to speed. You don't have any strong attacks so will be able to use any of your abilities once we get you up to speed. Nuzzle'll be great for getting paralysis in plus you've Thunder Wave as well if necessary. Of course the mudkip line'll pose the greatest danger to you and again the lotad line isn't really bothered by electricity thanks to their grass typing. Drago and Ayla we're you'll be doing a lot of Dragon Dancing obviously. Drago'll be getting a lot of use out of Thunderbolt and Ayla Leaf Blade'll be your main go to. Leaf Storm we'll save for when you're fast enough and won't be worried about using Gust." She paused a moment going over her thoughts once more.
"I think that's all... though of course you each have your weaker attacks. Tansy with Vine Whip, Cecylia with Nuzzle and Quick Attack, Drago with Twister and then Ayla with Gust. While we're getting your speeds up this'll be your go to secondary move. Tansy'll be the only one unable to get faster than the sunshine allows. But Vine Whip at least is super effective so it'll at least do a bit of extra damage. Nuzzle too won't be too bad. Twister and Gust though are mostly filler for you two. Shame you can't learn a few more interesting though weaker moves." The ranger shook her head then nodded it was now time her team demonstrated the aforementioned moves.
Each of the four prepared themselves, drawing on their inner power and focusing on their target. Tansy readied her blizzard of petals, Drago and Cecylia their bolts of electricity and Ayla sharpened her leafy blade. In unison the foursome released their attacks. A flurry of beautiful yet deadly petals beat against the target then was hit with all the lightning followed by being slashed with the leafy blade. The foursome paused to admire their handy work as Liz motioned for them to continue on to the next attack.
Now Tansy gathered a poisonous ooze into her flower while Drago began summoning a twister. Then Cecylia ran up to the target and started to nuzzle it with her check and Ayla whipped up a powerful storm of leaves. Cecylia darted out of the way as the twister now slammed into the target followed by a foul glob of sludge then was dashed by the jagged leaf storm. Liz nodded with a grin then refocused their attention on her.
"Excellent job guys. Those attacks should all benefit us in the gym battle. Now let's see if we can't find a sparing partner." The girl looked around the training grounds for a suitable looking trainer with which to battle.

Suddenly a couple of children appeared gawking in awe at the various pokemon on the field. Liz never really considered the impression her pokemon gave, mostly just forgetting that some folks weren't quite accustomed to seeing so many fully evolved pokemon out and about. Sure plenty of trainers were certain to have highly experienced and powerful teams but many trainers still kept the majority of their pokemon within their pokeballs, especially the larger ones. With an oversized venusaur, a larger than average tropius, a very large gyarados, and two lean fighters not to mention a classically adorable pikachu, it was plausible they'd draw some attention.
And naturally children were much more likely to be paying attention to these sort of things than adults. Kids were generally rather new to seeing quite so many different kinds of pokemon all at once. Typically adults wanted to show kids the smaller, cute pokemon rather than the stronger and more powerful ones. It was a good way to get kids used to handling pokemon especially as they did in fact get bigger and stronger. Training pokemon wasn't something one should really just jump into and starting off small while gradually raising your pokemon and learning alongside them was usually a good method of training.
These two kids however were requesting a battle with Liz and her team. The ranger raised a brow wondering if that was a good idea or not. But the kids were persistent and even released their pokemon to prove they could handle it. Liz was a tad surprised at some of the pokemon these children were raising but she had been looking for sparring partners. The girl chuckled and shrugged.
"Sure why not but I won't go easy on you." She warned with a grin and the two kids cheered happily. "Alright then, who should I battle first?" The brunette inquired and was nearly bum rushed with the two kids shouting loudly. "Me! Me! Me! Me!" The ranger stepped back and Raya quickly intercepted the pair of rather rowdy children gently, but firmly, coraling them back to the edge of the field. Liz shot the lucario a grateful look then crossed her arms and cleared her throat, squared up and took on a firm stance.
"Okay now calm down or no battle understand?" She stated with a commanding tone and the two kids settled down. "Let's see since you both want to battle why don't we have a double battle?" The ranger suggested. It would probably make things go a bit quicker and perhaps make it a bit more exciting for the kids. She motioned to the two kids, who'd already shown her their toxapex and binacle, then pointed down the field. "Alright you guys head on down there okay?"
The children both squealed in excitement and ran to the opposing end of the battlefield. Romulus and Bonnie both rereleased their pokemon and were practically hopping up and down in excitement. Liz raised a brow and glanced at Tansy and Ayla. She nodded to the field and the two took up position across from the children and their water types. The kids didn't seem to care they were at a disadvantage, just excited to be battling. This might not provide for the greatest of battles but it should still be informative. Binacle was part rock type and Toxapex was part poison type, both could be found at the water gym.

A battlefield groundskeeper appeared to referee for the trio and Liz turned her gaze to the kids. "Okay guys we'll let you go first." She offered with a grin. Both children cheered and then called out their attacks. "Binacle use Mud-Slap on the tropius!" The young Romulus shouted while Bonnie yelled "Toxapex use Recover!" Both kids were very enthusiastic but it was obvious they weren't exactly familiar with battling. Liz stifled a chuckle and watched things play out for the moment. Binacle released a wave of mud at Ayla but the tropius stood there unaffected. Toxapex looked confused as she was already at full health.
"That was a pretty good start guys but mind if I give you a few pointers?" The girl inquired. Both kids nodded eagerly and Liz grinned. "Okay, so Ayla is a tropius and she's both a grass and a flying type. Your Mud-Slap is a ground type attack and flying types are immune to ground type attacks. So that's why it didn't affect her. And for Toxapex, Recover is a great move! But it won't have any effect until your pokemon has taken damage. Understand?"
Both kids got that classic 'O' face when one is just realizing something that to them seems remarkable. Liz snickered a little, the kids were rather cute. "So let's see, what attacks does Binacle know?" She asked for Romulus. "Rock Polish, Ancient Power, Fury Cutter, and of course Mud-Slap!" He replied with enthusiasm. Liz nodded then motioned to Ayla. "Why don't you try Ancient Power on Ayla? Flying types are weak to rock type attacks like Ancient Power." She suggested.
Romulus nodded excitedly then called his attack. "Binacle, Ancient Power!" He stated trying to sound important. The binacle fired the ball of rock energy at Ayla who deflected most of the attack but allowed it to hit. Romulus cheered and did a fist pump. "We did it!" He called happily. Bonnie pouted and motioned to Toxapex. "What about Toxie? She knows Venoshock, Pin Missile, Recover, and Liquidation!" The ranger put her chin in her hand then looked apologetically at Ayla.
"Well, grass types like Ayla are weak to Poison attacks like Venoshock. Tansy is part poison type so she's immune to poison. And for other grass types Pin Missile, a bug type move is good to use. So why don't you try Venoshock on Ayla?" Liz shrugged at Ayla who shook her head a little. It wasn't exactly fun being the target practice this round.
"Okay! Toxapex, use Venoshock!" Bonnie called but this time Liz gave a nod to Ayla and the tropius readied herself. As the glob of poison shot forward, Ayla leapt into the sky and did a loop avoiding the poisonous blow. "Hey! That's not fair!" Bonnie shouted. Liz chuckled and shrugged. "Well that's another thing about battles, your opponent can and will try to avoid your attacks, especially those that are super effective." She explained with a wink. Bonnie pouted a little still but seemed interested in what Liz had said. The ranger cracked her knuckles then looked at her two. "Well guess it's our turn."
She glanced at Tansy and caught the poisonous grass type's eye. The venusaur nodded slowly and a small smirk spread over her features. Ayla watched her fellow grass type knowing what was coming and a little glad she wasn't have to play target practice anymore. Tansy crouched low to the ground and felt the earth begin to move beneath her. Slowly the movement grew more intense then spilled out away from the venusaur spreading rapidly across the battlefield. Everything was rocking and shaking and the other members of Liz's team where holding onto each other and the support railing around the field. The kids both looked a bit scared not knowing what was going on.
Their pokemon however were looking even worse as the wave of powerful ground energy slammed into them and flung them both to the ground. The binacle and toxapex were seeing stars and were most certainly unable to continue battling. Both kids looked crushed but also in awe as they tried to understand what had just happened. Liz smiled gently and approached them as they recalled their pokemon. "Sorry guys, but that was Earthquake, one of the most powerful ground type attacks. See both rock and poison types like your two are weak against ground attacks, especially one as powerful as Earthquake. I did warn you I wouldn't go easy on you." She stated softly unsure if the kids would understand.
She needn't worry however, the kids looked sad but then blurted out asking all sorts of questions. It seemed they'd enjoyed their battle even if they'd lost and were eager to learn more. The ranger laughed and led them back over to her team. The six pokemon greeted the kids happily and with Liz's permission the children were allowed to pet, climb, fistbump and otherwise interact with the six. The ranger told them all about each pokemon, their name, their types, their strengths and weaknesses and even went into some detail about their abilities.
Soon she even found herself telling them the story of how she met each of her pokemon, what had happened to Cecylia and explained why she was blind, and that Tansy was her starter and very first pokemon. She also told them about training martial arts with Raya and Levin too. This little impromptu school session took the better part of the afternoon. Liz didn't mind however, as she even let her pokemon show off some of their moves for the kids as well. They wished her luck in the gym battle before departing and Liz couldn't help wearing a smile as they made their way back to the pokemon center.
