The soft tendrils of sleep had claimed Shalin's Pokémon as well - Caprice and Prance took turns napping while the other kept watch for wild Pokémon who got too close. They swapped every couple of hours, the Ninetales' gold fur standing out in the near-complete darkness. Though her trainer's snoring wasn't terribly loud, it was just loud enough to be irritating. She normally didn't snore - all that travel and battle must have really wore her out.
Just past two in the morning, during Caprice's second shift, an Ursaring wandered toward Shalin's tent. This left the fire-type a bit on edge. She gently rubbed across the sleeping Prance's face with her soft tails, getting a sneeze out of the Normal-type as she woke. The wild's eyes were only half open as it walked on all fours toward the two watchful Pokémon that stood outside the entrance to the girl's tent. It approached the two and sniffed them before yawning and laying down outside the tent, on the side opposite the entrance.
The moment the sun broke the eastern horizon, Caprice rest both her front paws on Shalin and shook her awake. "Morning," she yawned, the Ninetales lowering her paws back to the ground so Shalin could wake up. "What is it?" The girl unzipped her sleeping bag, still in yesterday's clothes as she took a peek outside the tent. There was a sleeping Ursaring around the corner. Though they were violent in the wild, they made loyal companions. Shalin also had very little muscle on her team - all of them were show Pokémon. An Ursaring would fill that gap nicely. Most importantly, it was a Pokémon she'd never ridden before! Waiting to give it a try, she slipped hack into the tent to retrieve a Quick Ball to catch the sleeping bear with and gently clicked its button against the wild's arm.

After sending the Ursaring back to the Romping Grounds within Weeping Forest, Shalin started packing up her tent, sending Flit out to let him stretch his wings. His right wing looked much better already - the chitin had already been patched. It was still a bit thin where the wound was, but it would fill back in completely over time. Probably not a good idea to use full-power sonic attacks with it, but at least it would be safe enough for him to fly.
The Yanmega caught the attention of an elderly, but still active, trainer - the woman had to be at least in her sixties. Flit did not appreciate the traveler's flattery and started rumbling his wings softly...though softly was relative - it was still fairly loud without her earplugs on. "Flit, stop - she means no harm." Once the white-haired female saw how quick the Yanmega was to obey, she knew the camper was quite the talented trained, and wanted to have a quick battle. Shalin thought about it a while, but ultimately agreed. It was early enough in the day. Who knows? Maybe the commotion would attract the bug Pokémon she was looking for.
Shalin recalled her Stantler, presenting Caprice and Flit as her two Pokémon for the quick battle. Up first for the traveler was one of the cutest-looking Rufflet she had ever seen. The girl couldn't let her guard down - out of all the small bird Pokémon, Rufflet were some of the toughest due to how cruel Braviary in the wild raised them.
The two were still in a forest, though - Caprice still had to be careful with her fire attacks. Heat Wave was probably okay to use, but Flamethrower and Fire Blast were off limits except in case of dire emergency. Nothing in a trainer battle could possibly invoke that level of urgency. "Caprice, Heat Wave!" Shalin commanded, backing up as much as she could to avoid exposure to the one Fire attack that could be used without sparking a forest fire.
The quick Ninetales stood almost exactly in the center of the two trainers and rapidly fanned her ignited tails, raising the local temperature almost unbearably high. The small bird tried to fly away, but the exertion needed to fly above the attack caused the Rufflet to overheat, forcing it to land. The old woman smiled - Rufflet were Pokémon well-versed in fighting with their backs to the wall. Ordering an Aerial Ace attack, the Pokémon dash underneath Caprice at blink-or-you'll-miss-it speeds, thrusting its sharp beak into the Ninetales' soft, sensitive chest. The Rufflet was wearing an artificial beak that was even sharper than their natural ones, adding gash to smash. A critical hit!
"Don't let it get away - Quick Attack!" Shalin called, the reeling Ninetales lunging back toward the bird with a weak but fast strike - all she needed to bring the Rufflet down. The green-clothed trainer waved Caprice back, Flit taking the cue to come forward. She donned her earplugs, just in case it the battle came down to him using a weaker version of his sonic attacks.
The lady's Metang would be Flit's opponent. The giant insect wasn't exactly in tip-top shape, but close enough for Shalin's tastes. "Flit, land on it and use your Night Slash!" While the Metang was fast and could levitate in any direction, it was no match for the helicopter-like precision the apex predator of the ancient insect kingdom possessed. He got one solid blow in before the Metang hovered away, holding the Yanmega's wings still with potent psychic powers. By the time the purple glow around Flit ceased, he was delirious, buzzing one wing at a time, and the one wing sounded like a stuttering small engine that did not want to start.
Taking full advantage of the Yanmega's vulnerable position, the Metang clenched its right claws into a fist of sorts and thrust its heavy bofy toward Flit. Exactly what Shalin was waiting for. "Flit, use your Bug Buzz! But seventy percent!" Scowling as to tighten his focus, the woozy Yanmega latched onto the ground with his six legs before buzzing up a storm, the Metang shaking far more than was healthy for any steel-type. Unable to hold its levitation any longer, it was a sitting duck - enough for the wandering trainer to recall her Pokémon and pack up shop.
"You okay?" Shalin asked Flit, the Pokémon replying with a nod. The psychic attacks left the Yanmega in fair condition, but not so much that he couldn't fly while carrying her. Shalin climbed into her insect's harness, the two taking off with a bit less turbulence than her previous flight in the woods. Either she was getting more used to Flit's vibration, or Flit was hiding his real condition.

Shlin peered to her left as the Yanmega gained altitude - she could see the tips of her mount's wings much more clearly than normal. They were still a complete blur, but she knew he could make them disappear from human sight completely at full speed. On the bright side, the buzzing in her ears wasn't nearly as loud as it was yesterday. "Flit, can you fly higher?" Shalin asked, immediately met with her hair standing on end for a few seconds, her mount's wings churning much harder briefly to quickly gain altitude. They had to be at least fifty feet off the ground, and the treetops were nowhere in sight!
Shalin couldn't help but let out a whoop from time to time as Flit sharply weaved through the giant limbs weaved amongst the many trees stretching to great heights. She caught a glimpse of a Tyrogue, previously occupied with trying to crack a Combee nest open for food, throwing a punch toward Flit in vain. Just barely in her vision was a truly colossal tree, the rider tilting her head up to get a better look. This tree's leaves were as golden as Caprice's fur! This had to be the tree spoken of in Arcielian myth. The giant Pokémon she wanted to see were close! "We're almost there!" Shalin encouraged, gently patting the Pokémon who looked focused on keeping his rider from going flying into a tree limb.

Flit flew up a little higher before landing near the base of one of the primary limbs of a positively enormous sequoia tree. It was big enough to support the weight of both Flit and Shalin while barely budging! The giri didn't dare climb out of the saddle and walk along the limb, though - it was a long way down. She eyeballed it to be about 75 feet. While she would handily survive if she did fall, the result wouldn't be pretty. Someone, whether it be herself or the Pokémon that caught her, would end up with a broken something.
The giant dragonfly crawled a little farther out from the trunk before facing away from the tree, finally able to rest his wings. Shalin's jaw dropped in awe - it seemed every tree back here was at least as tall as the one Flit was roosting in! The signs of human travel grew increasingly sparse - within her entire viewpoint, there were signs of one campfire. She could see for quite a distance, too, but the golden-leaf tree seemed to have disappeared beyond the rest of them. She had hoped to get a better view of it, but from where she was, it looked like it had vanished completely.
The smell of honey wafted toward her, Shalin tensing up and clutching Flit's reins tightly. "Hey, can you fly to that branch over there?" she asked her Pokémon. In a swift motion, the Pokémon leaped to another branch, this one facing directly north. Still no view of the tree. She did, however, catch the source of the smell - it wasn't honey at all. Just tree sap that smelled like honey, a colony of Ledyba feeding on it. She had found a lot of bug Pokémon deep in the sacred woods...just not the one she was after. The blonde scanned her surroundings for a nest of the menacing, yellow and black Pokémon she was after, the wind dying down almost completely.

While Shalin did not see the type of nest she was looking for, the girl did notice the nest of a different toxic bug-type--Venomoth. After having learned how to control Flit somewhat, few aerial bug-types would be able to offer the same thrill. If the wild was larger, she woulc have given a thought to making a catch. Though Venomoth were flighty like Butterfree were, it just wasn't enough of a thrill to go through the trouble of paying a breeder for one she could climb onto.
Serena's Poké Ball started rattling - a sign she wanted to be let out. Shalin rolled her eyes - this far up in the trees, the Persian wanted to pick a fight? She stopped to think about it, and it made sense - she had both a hidden vantage point and the high ground. Sighing, she looked for a lower limb to let the Persian out on. There was one about 20 feet underneath her, still above the Venomoth nest. Shalin got a little nervous when the sturdy-looking limb started swaying under the big Normal-type's weight.
The limb Serena was hanging on cracked under the force of Serena's jump, leaving a jagged stump where the limb was. The noise alerted the Venomoth to its assailant, but it was far too late - Serena had already landed nearly on top of the bug-type, riding the falling branch all the way to the ground and letting gravity do the rest of the damage for her. Her foe was startled to the point that by the time she could squirm away, the clawed prowler pinned the wild down and raked over its sensitive abdomen with a flurry of slashing swipes. Managing two flaps of its wings in its very weakened condition, Serena's foe discharged a cloud containing a potent narcotic, putting both combatants out cold.
"Come on, Flit!" Shalin cried, pointing to the base of the tree where the one-sided battle took place. The dragonfly landed near Serena, gusts from his wingbeat blowing the Sleep Powder away. If not even Flit's buzzing would wake her, nothing would. She was out cold - that must have been one powerful Sleep Powder. Shrugging, the girl recalled her sleeping Persian.
Shalin had exhausted all her vials of bug spray - she had attracted quite a few squishy insects, but not the one she was searching for. She did come prepared, though - Beedrill had another type that it could be attracted by. Though it could potentially attract some highly aggressive Pokémon, it was the last good option she had. She procured a vial of vile liquid (no pun intended) from her pack, taking a deep breath before popping the cork. From inside wafted a putrid smell that got Flit buzzing, trying to blow the scent away. The girl felt woozy and nauseous for the first moments after popping the aroma concocted to attract Poison-types. Flit was forced to crawl westward along the ground, avoiding motion that would push his trainer over the brink.

Once Flit had crawled a good distance away, Shalin's nausea started to subside. The rider groaned as Flit warmed up his wings and started to get them up to speed, preparing to lift back into the air. The great bug-type took it as a cue to keep crawling. "Augh..." she groaned again, her stomach still a bit upset from the fumes, Flit's brief spurt of vibration only agitating it further.
As Flit turned to follow the natural trail among the sequoia trees, Shalin twisted to her left, noticing a floating face where she had previously opened the concoction. A poison-type Pokémon, right as the product promised. But did the product itself have to be nausea-inducing? At least she knew it was doing its job, unlike that bug spray. At least the Gastly seemed happy to revel in the disgusting air. As the two crawled farther away, Shalin's stomach calmed down. "Alright, let's try this again," she instructed her mount. Flit stood in place, his wings whirring slowly at first. It didn't take long for the constant tingling sensation to return, the bug jumping into the air and taking flight almost on cue.

As Flit fluttered northwest, Shalin letting out the occasional whoop from a sudden motion, the ambient light from overhead seemed to be decreasing. It was barely mid-morning when she took off - there was no way the sun could be going down already. She peered upward and saw nothing but foliage above her, an endless canopy of green and brown, dense enough to block out the sun. She pulled back on the giant dragonfly, quick to ease up on his speed. "Relying on you to see, okay?" Shalin called to Flit, taking one hand off his reins to gently pat him on the head. In such dark conditions, the Yanmega's giant compound eyes would be far better than human vision.
Without Shalin's guidance, Flit turned toward two small white pupils and a pink nose outlining a cavity in the shape of an upside-down heart. Shalin gently tugged with her right hand, but her mount wouldn't obey her command to turn. "...What's gotten into you, buddy?" she asked, holding on tighter as her Pokémon reared back to kill its speed--right in front of a Swoobat hanging upside-down from a branch about 50 feet in the air.
The psychic bat sounded a noise from its large nose akin to a human whistling--the same kind of whistle heard in classic cartoons when a particularly attractive woman was trying to woo a man. Flit couldn't help but circle the Swoobat - that was one irresistible face! The wild followed up with a point-blank wingbeat, using its ESP to shift the air into a blade that cut cleanly into the delirious insect's face! Flit spiraled and roared downward, much like an airplane, crashing to the ground below.

As Shalin moved to try to at least sit back up and assess what could possibly have happened, she accidentally rolled onto the "release" button on Serena's Poké Ball. Her catnap finished, she wasted no time lunging at the Swoobat who was trying to figure out where to start gorging itself on its fallen prey. Mid-charge, the red gem on her forehead glowed brightly. The cat brilliantly psyched out the wild with a fake claw slash, nailing Swoobat with the opposite claw. Before Serena could finish her Power Gem attack, the Swoobat used the same tactic it did against Flit - the sudden telekinetically-crafted blades of air caught even the clever Persian by surprise. A follow-up Air Slash while she was reeling downed the Persian as well.
Shalin's situation was dire. "Caprice!" Shalin called on her speedy Ninetales, immediately recalling her other two Pokémon, flipping herself into the fire-type's saddle, and turning her away from the psychic-type. "RUN!" she shouted, ejecting her earplugs and slamming her heels into the Pokémon's sides. Though she was still hurt from a previous battle, she had no choice - this was the fastest Pokémon she had left. The Pokémon took off into a full-blown sprint, Shalin able to hear her fire-type partner's heavy breathing.

The Swoobat was quick to fly in front of Caprice, the Ninetales bucking and kicking in an effort to resist its Psychic assault. Normally she would have the time of her life being on a bucking Pokémon like this, but not in these circumstances. Caprice shook her head, snapping out of the mental hold. "Quick Attack, Caprice! Get us out of here!"
p_ Flee from battle. Chance of escape: 57%
The burst of speed from Quick Attack seemed to be enough to lose the Swoobat, but Shalin's team was in bad shape. She would need to find a place to set up camp and not only let her fallen Pokémon lick their wounds, but for her to lick her own, as well. She had injured something, but she was still unsure what it was.

Shalin groaned as she and Caprice continued west, a dull pain in her right leg becoming a little sharper as she pivoted. She must have slightly pulled a muscle when being on the bucking Ninetales. The pain wasn't too bad, but she had best not agitate it. She slowed her fox down to a canter now that the wild was nowhere in sight. The forest seemed to grow more dense as they continued north and west, so dense as to form a natural wall of wood. There had to be a secret to reaching the center of the forest, and she was going to find it.
After a slow hour of searching, at last Shalin found a spot where she could set up camp and evaluate her Pokémon. After setting up a tent, she released Flit and adminstered Revive and Hyper Potion to him. After coming to, Flit started buzzing with only his left wing. "Stay still!" Shalin cried as she carefully examined her Pokémon. After one pass around him, she discovered the area around Yanmega's right wing was swollen! It seemed like he could still fight if need be, but he would be without his best attacks.
She moved on to Serena, swapping the two Pokémon. The feline's mouth hung open, her body unmoving. She gently touched the top of Serena's right front paw, causing the Pokémon to barely open her eyes and sound a pained cry. The fur around her front paws was extremely tender! "I'm so sorry!" Shalin cried, immediately adminstering Revive and Hyper Potion to her as well. Though the medicine brought down the swelling some and relaxed some of the pain away, Serena didn't look very comfortable. She could still walk, but she would not be running any time soon.
Finally, she examined Caprice. She carefully checked out the fox's legs and sides, as they were put under the most strain. While there were two somewhat tender spots where Shalin had spurred the Ninetales out of desperation to get away, the fire-type seemed fine, more mentally tired than anything from resisting the Swoobat's attacks. She administered three vials of Potion, mostly as a pain reliever for what would be her primary mount's massive headache.
The blonde let Caprice curl up in the tent, instead releasing her Skuntank to keep guard as well as give herself a partner to bond with, keeping an eye out for Pokémon that wandered too close...such as an enormous Spinarak about the size of a well-bred Growlithe that was crawling around the outside of her tent without her noticing. It had spun a web around the entrance to her tent, also without her noticing, before crawling in front of Kiku. Though the wild had faked him out with a well-placed Sucker Punch, the sting had barely pierced the tough fur. Kiku snorted at the Spinarak, diving toward it and raking its back with his sharp, front claws. Not wanting this opportunity to go to waste, Shalin tossed a Net Ball toward the wild - an Ariados would be very valuable on her team.

The Spinarak shattered even Shalin's Net Ball - this one had some fight in it! Not so much fight that Kiku could slash at it again if she wanted to bag the big spider. Taking advantage of the Skuntank's hesitation, the green bug shot a web onto the back of the poison-type's head, then immediately turned around and fire more all over the top of his tail, plugging it up! The strong Pokémon bucked and heaved with power Shalin would love to try to withstand, in a more controlled environment of course. All its effort was in vain, though - that Pokémon wasn't going anywhere.
That was it! Shalin grinned, coming up with a great idea! With a precise application of sticky spider web in the saddle, she could go on a much wilder ride than simply relying on her own strength. Sure, it would be a pain to clean off afterward, but would it ever be worth the trouble. She just had to catch this Spinarak now - she had to!
While Kiku caught his breath from flailing about so wildly, the Spinarak stung him with its forehead barb, infecting and infesting him with microscopic insects that ravaged his body from the inside out. Controlled by the Spinarak, they would become harmless shortly after as the wild was defeated or captured...but until then, the poor poison-type was subject to writhing pain. Unable to watch her Pokémon suffer any more, she pitched another Net Ball at high speed toward the grappling spider.

Second time was the charm, apparently - the Spinarak had used almost all its stamina up breaking out of the first Net Ball, settling into the second one with almost no resistance. She retrieved the Ball, her new catch disappearing out of her hand shortly after picking it up. Then there was the issue of the mess the poisonous insect had created - the web covering the tent. With her bag inside the tent, she couldn't access her paring knife. Caprice would be smart enough to get it for her, but she was fast asleep. She was going to need to improvise.
Shalin looked around for a small but sturdy branch to pull the web apart. Finding one of those wasn't an issue - there was debris everywhere in the woods. The problem arose when she swung at the web. She tore a couple of threads loose, but her stick got stuck, entangled in sticky web she couldn't get out. If the web was adhesive enough to absorb something like that, then it was adhesive enough to effectively glue her to the back of whatever unruly Pokémon she wanted. If Shalin had to, she could ask Kiku could slash them apart, but his claws would be covered in web and would probably be unusable afterward.
Shalin had to get out of the Sequoia first, though - no easy task. She was easily a day and a half out from Maple, and napping with her Pokémon here was going to mess up her sleep schedule and force her to try to travel by night. Caprice would be able to light the way, yes, but she wasn't doing any fighting any time soon. Coming to the realization that she only needed to make a hole in the webbing large enough to crawl inside and grab her paring knife, she gathered more branches, this time jagged-looking ones, and started piercing the web.
Getting in the tent didn't take long after that; the tedious part would be cleaning all the webbing off with more appropriate tools. It was a lot easier than thrusting holes in the webbing, but there was also a lot more of it. She needed to make sure to get every piece of web off, too, otherwise there would be a problem trying to collapse the tent and reopen it later. While she was cleaning up, Kiku noticed a wild Nidorino not too far away, walked up to it, and started chatting up a storm with the Pokémon that was just passing through.
