aspiring folklorist/cryptid hunter

Ah man, how can one accurately describe Mercy’s personality. Mercedes isn’t a bad person, deep down but the nicest way someone might be able to say is that she can be...distant, under most cases. Mercedes isn’t the type of person that’s the easiest to hold an idle conversation with, if she’s not interested in a subject that she’ll give simple short sentence answers, sometimes even being a single word at a time, which doesn’t make her someone who others seek out for company most of the time.
Some might see it as malice, but only it’s more that Mercedes is very devout in many meanings of the word. The first being is yes, she is a pretty religious person (don’t get her started on talking about her bull shaped island god, she’ll spend an hour pointing out its cute points) but it’s also just that once she’s got something in her focus she’s almost single minded in her pursuit of that topic, like a ponyta with blinders on . If you really want to get the girl to light up and talk your ear off, strike up a conversation about cryptids, it’s like night and day the way her personality will switch. Where once someone might see a sullen, frosty girl you’ll now be greeted with a hyper, cheerful and almost too friendly Alolan who wants to know what your favorite cryptid is and why it should be shaymin..
In the beginning there were the Gods. And then the Gods created the universe, blessing each island with their own sense of divine protection, praise be unto them
.…Okay, so admittedly the truth in those old stories about how the Tapu’s created and protected the islands may not be a universal truth and not everyone remains exactly devout to the island religion, but in a young girl’s mind every myth, every legend that exists in the world is based in some part on reality. Of course, some of it is bullshit, maybe most of it. But the thought that some of it may be real is what makes folklore and legends so enticing. This is what Mercedes (or Mercie, depending on who you are) has believed for as long as she’s been able to read and her grandfather gifted her a pop up art book which told the story of Ho-Oh and Lugia. In hindsight it was nothing more than a children’s story book that really didn’t have much in the way of lore or research to its name, but as with everything that kicks off a hobby it was enough to captivate her interests.
Admittedly it would have been nice if she had as much of an interest in the family business as she did in chasing fantasies, as her loving family members often grumbled about whenever they thought she wasn’t paying attention close enough to hear their bitching, but you know what they say. If wishes were fishes, the world would be an ocean.
It wasn’t like she disliked what her family did for a living, she spent a decent amount of time studying under her older brother and her grandmother in the textiles shop their family had run for generations but while most of her family spent time performing on stage at various levels from professional work to high school plays, Mercedes had discovered an unfortunate and crippling case of stage fright at a young age, forcing her to take shelter in the backstage aspects of productions. It really sucked for a while, like most people who go into this kind of field she had always imagined herself as someone who was standing on center stage soaking in the cheers of an adoring public, but with time she had to admit to her honest surprise that it was kind of cool to see things she helped create put on display for a bunch of people to see and wear.
Plus she was pretty good at it, that also helped quash the disappointment. The girl was a decent enough artist that she could weave some good-looking designs together. Although Mercie would still rather spend most of her time trying to hunt down various legendries and exploring the myths and legends of various regions around the world, seeing as the tooth fairy never left her a fortune under her pillow than for the time being she’ll make things work a little closer to the home base.
That’s all well and good in theory, right? Nobody’s really getting hurt (unless you count giving yourself heat stroke in an attempt to summon a latias because the information posted on that site was very false as it turned out) but the problem with being an up and coming cryptid hunter is that a lot of the cryptids that are famous are the ones people have already discovered. (If you believe the forums anyway, but why wouldn’t you? There’s no lying on the internet) Mewtwo, Kyogre, Lugia, finding all of those are all nice and all and would be a welcome addition to her ‘need to hug’ list, but those aren’t the things that really make people known. People want to learn about new things, and luckily having friends who are well off who share your interest in cryptozoology to the point where he funds your explorations to hunt for these things certainly takes financial pressure off of what is a surprisingly expensive hobby.
Is that the only reason she’s come to Arciel? Perhaps not, but she won’t deny that it’s like eighty-five percent of the reason. Show her your secrets Arciel, let your cryptids be her best friend. Especially the fluffy ones.
The long term goal is easy: discover and hug as many cryptids as she can. Her white whale is Marshadow, as it combines her two favorite types but any will do really. In the meantime, just...chill, hang out and study ghost and punchers? Maybe capture a keldeo in the meantime, the options are limitless.
5'04" / 162 cm
A little on the short side, thin, tanned.
pale blonde, almost white
What you see in appearance is really what you get with Mercedes. She’s a tanned island girl, a little on the shorter side of things, and most of her wardrobe is made up of things that makes it very apparent that she makes her home in a warm island climate, dressed as if she’s ready to hit the beach more than the library or mingle with society. It’s okay, it’s what put the cryptids at ease, and isn’t that what matters?
The best word one might be able to think of when it comes to Mercedes’ aura is a simple one:calm. Mostly purple in color although it does have slight tinges of a different blue in hue, like someone didn’t fully mix away all of the blue when they were making the purple if this was a paint by numbers set. her aura just sort of shimmers and hangs around her almost like a very thin foggy mist, kind of like the effect you may see of someone if you were staring at them from behind a waterfall if that makes sense.
