It looked like he had not missed anything about the rug, after all. Was he really making mistakes like this? Either way, the heat was getting dangerous - too much for him. In the interest of his health, he lurched toward the door, his head pounding. The last time his head ached this much was after having to pull an all-nighter to fix his sleep schedule before junior year finals week. As he was about to reach for the emergency exit's handlebar, his legs buckled, and he crashed and collapsed into the opening door.
The moment the seal broke on the door, the sound of a male voice screaming filled the room, every light in the room flashing a bright red. The DMD behind him flashed "LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM: OFFLINE | GAME OVER", as the lights blinked off and on in sync with the noise a heart monitor made, the lights fading completely to black as a continuous beep drowned out all other noise, giving the immersion that his character had flatlined in whatever "game" the Gym was running.
A minute or so later, Josh came to in the Gym's lobby, the thermostat reading a comfortable, normal 72 degrees Fahrenheit, everything just as it was before the trial began. He was sitting in the same chair he had been the entire time, sweating profusely but otherwise feeling fine. Some paperwork he hadn't seen before was at feet. It was the result of his Gym battle:
"We thank you for your interest in the Ash Gym. Leader Caelean has evaluated your skills today. Unfortunately, the Leader has determined you are insufficiently skilled to be considered for a challenge. As indicated on your application, an appointment for a new challenge has been booked for June 9, 2020. We wish you the best of luck."
Underneath it was a second notice:
"We thank you for your interest in the Ash Gym. Due to Leader Caelean being on the front lines in the wake of the Ultra Beast crisis, capacity at the Gym has been greatly reduced. As a result, your appointment for a new Gym Challenge has been rescheduled to July 14, 2020. We apologize for the inconvenience, and wish you the best of luck."
"Wait, Ultra Beasts?! What are they doing here?!" Josh stormed out the Gym door and raced toward the nearest Pokémon Center, trying to get a handle as to what this new and alarming development was all about.
