word count: 554 The ranger was back once more at the flight certification course and this time she had four members of her team needing flight training. First up of course was one of her home region pokemon Shou the flygon. Shou like many of her other home region fliers was already fairly familiar with having Elizabeth as a passenger. This course was largely just a refresher for him.
Though of Liz's other fliers, Shou could be a touch dense at times. The ranger saddled the large dragon up before swinging onto his back. She directed him toward the first obstacle, uneven bars. Now Shou might not always be paying attention to things, but he certainly enjoyed playing around in the air. He was surprisingly carefree for a dragon, though most of Liz's dragons didn't act as expected.
The flygon easily dipped up and down, up and down, over each bar. His taut almost snake like form weaved between the bars kind of like he was swimming in air. His wings buzzed at surprising speed their hum having a rather musical quality to it. Riding flygon was always a bit unusual compared to say Chisulo, her skarmory, who wasn't nearly as flexible as the ground dragon. Ever flier was different and Shou was of course no exception.
wc: 214 Apvm602Jp_
Shou dipped down under the final bar then he twisted his body in a tight corkscrew performing a controlled Dragon Dance. Liz leaned in close gripping tightly to the surprisingly smooth scales of his neck. She closed her eyes and let her thoughts mesh with Shou's. Her psychic bond with her pokemon had only continued to grow and strangely enough the recent ripple of psychic energy from the opening of the Ultra Wormhole had seemingly increased her own psychic skill.
Of course she was utilizing this new increase in psychic energy for only the most important things... such as seeing flight from the view point of Shou. The flygon's mind was all over the place, easily distracted and not thinking of much more beyond the next hurtle. These aerial gymnastics were interesting for awhile but then the ground dragon's mind tended to wander.
But Liz's focus on his thoughts helped to keep Shou on track. Their next obstacle was the flag tunnel in which one had to be ready for wherever the wind forced the flag to shift. It was more than large enough to handle the nearly ten foot flygon but keeping him paying attention was the tricky part. Luckily the ranger was pretty much handling all the paying attention for both of them.
Still Shou's focus could be rapidly snapped back whenever the flag would suddenly take a sharp turn or dip. So long as the exercise kept changing it was easier to keep him engaged. The flygon had no trouble maneuvering through the tunnel with Liz's aid and it wasn't long before they exited the other side, fortunately not setting the thing on fire this time.

The instructor signaled their final score and the ranger chuckled as she guided Shou back to the ground. They'd passed rather easily and the young woman was fortunate Shou had a little more on his game today. Though while the flygon had handled the course like a pro, now Liz had to focus on her less familiar and less experienced fliers.

word count: 1478 Kaida was next up, the former noibat having grown into a rather large noivern. Elizabeth hadn't worked too much with the young dragon and she was a tad concerned with her rather impish nature. Thus far Kaida hadn't put up too much of a fuss when working with Liz but things would be different when airborne. Sure the ranger had plenty of impish and naughty pokemon, her worse pair being Shyam and Loki.
Kaida it seemed though wasn't exactly enthralled with this flying idea. As Liz went to strap on the saddle the noivern hopped away from the ranger as she snickered at watching the young woman attempt to catch up with her. The ranger however quickly stopped once she realized what the dragon bat was up to and gave her a scolding look.
"Alright now Kaida. I know this isn't the most comfortable thing in the world but it's better than having my legs dangling into the folds of your wings. Plus the faster we get this done, the sooner we can get lunch? Sound like a plan?"
Kaida hissed a little but stopped and stood in place. Really of Liz's dragons she was probably the biggest handful. Though much of the pokedex data on noivern spouted things like aggressive, cruel, violent, and ruthless, the ranger never trusted much of this supposed data. Pokemon couldn't simply be summed up in a few lines of text. Sure many pokemon tended toward certain characteristics and in the wild they were much more likely to follow their more base natures, but pokemon were also intelligent, sentient creatures with feelings. They had their own language and could understand the world in a way humans just couldn't.
It took some doing but at long last Elizabeth managed to get the saddle in place and steady herself aboard the noivern. Kaida huffed as she suddenly shot into the air nearly unseating the unsteady ranger. Liz was lucky enough to have strong legs and good balance thus was able to cling to the saddle and right herself once airborne.
wc: 343 tP|U8KJ9p_
Now of course came the really hard part, working in sync with Kaida. The noivern certainly had her own mind about this whole flying thing. She didn't like the saddle, didn't like the weight on her back and didn't like being told where to go. Like Shou, Kaida was a free spirit, however while Shou didn't mind sharing his 'spirit' with others, Kaida was more selfish and wanted to fly by her own will.
There was also the odd sitting position one had whilst on the noivern. Elizabeth was a skilled rider but she really preferred riding bareback as it where. While she could connect mentally with her pokemon, that physical contact was important too and conveyed a different kind of communication that even a telepathic thought could have trouble conveying. But due to the way noivern's wings were connected almost to their back limbs there wasn't room for a rider's legs to rest beneath the wing joint like on many other fliers. Thus sitting with her knees against the noiver's back and her feet pressed against the saddle it made that physical connection more difficult.
And Kaida's mind was harsher than many of her other pokemon. Kaida wasn't a dark type thus couldn't block her mind completely from the ranger as she pleased but she could still make it difficult to allow Liz to connect with her. It took more effort for the ranger to pick up what the dragon was thinking and to impart her own desires to the dragon but Liz certainly wasn't one to give up.
Of course this mental battle was taking place as Kaida was racing around the course, ignoring the obstacles and simply flying as fast and erratically as she could. This was a battle of wills and Kaida wasn't going to let Liz off easy. The ranger kept a steady eye ahead watching for the noivern's movements. She was only getting a split second sense for what Kaida was going to do before she did it but it was enough to adjust accordingly.
The ride was easily one of the wildest the ranger had ever experienced as Kaida dropped, dipped, dove, twisted, twirled, flipped and did everything she could to try and dump the ranger. Liz gripped tight to the saddle glad to have it's support through this. Kaida however was so focused on getting Liz off she wasn't fully paying attention to her surroundings.
"Wait. Wait! STOP! Kaida look out!!"
The ranger shouted both aloud and mentally as the noviern careened right into one of the safety nets that hung about 50 feet up in the air. The noivern panicked as her wings got caught up in the net and she flailed about managing to get them both tangled in the net. Her thrashing managed to jerk free one of the hooks and the net dropped then whipped them toward one of the steel poles holding the net up. The ranger wrenched a hand free and held it outward toward the pole as they were swinging toward it and with all the psychic force she could muster she managed to slow their momentum so they weren't both smashed into the post.
wc: 530 p_
Liz panted as they dangled from the net and Kaida craned her head around to look herself over. The ranger groaned and wriggled about until she could get her other hand free. Kaida began twisting around trying to get herself free but the ranger pressed a firm but gentle hand on her back.
"Hey! Hey easy Kaida, are you okay?"
The ranger inquired as soon as they had settled and stroked the noivern's neck as she tried to determine if she'd been injured in anyway. Kaida huffed as she still tried to wriggle about. The ranger reached down for the combat knife she kept in her boot for such emergencies then addressed Kaida in a firm tone.
"Now. Hold. Still. I'm going to cut you free but you have to hold very still otherwise I could accidentally cut you, okay?"
Kaida stiffened but nodded slowly as she tried to crane her neck around to watch Liz. The dragon pretty much had to trust the ranger not to hurt her and to get her free. It took some doing but Liz was careful and methodical as she began cutting away the net. She started as low as she could not wanting to destabilize their position and focused on getting Kaida's wings free first. The dragon would have to be ready to hold them up once the net had gone slack.
"Almost got it, be ready now."
The noivern was now listening closely to the ranger this whole situation rather terrifying and embarrassing. However from Liz's thoughts the noivern didn't sense hostility or even blame. Liz's was simply calm and focused on her task. Kaida was confused but she noted the slackening of the ropes and she carefully spread her wings ready to catch herself once the last rope was freed. Then for a brief moment they were both falling and Kaida pumped her wings furiously to remain airborne.
"Ah there we go. How does everything feel? Are your wings alright?"
The ranger inquired as Kaida pushed away from the net and managed to lift them up higher. The noivern nodded though both she and Liz were obviously sore. Kaida dropped her head in a sheepish gesture as Liz reached out and gave her a pat.
"Shall we try that again?"
Liz suggested and pointed forward. Kaida hesitated but stretched her wings out and pulled them forward. They took it slow, feeling out this new found respect. Perhaps listening to Liz wasn't so bad, if she hadn't been determined to ignore her she'd never had run into the net. Liz wasn't mentioning it but as Kaida allowed the young woman to connect with her she could sense the ranger was in pain from the exertion it had taken to telekinetically keep the noivern from slamming into that steel post. The ranger didn't do much, Kaida did a few laps around the course and weaved through a few poles but the noivern was listening now and wasn't so resistant to the ranger's guidance or weight.
wc: 502 p_
While she hadn't expected to pass after having destroyed their safety net, the ranger was still given the all clear, likely due simply to the astonishing difference in the before and after ride. Kaida was pretty tired as was Liz but the ranger still had two more to go and she didn't feel much like putting this off. As they touched back down Liz reached out and caressed Kaida's ears almost causing the noivern to coo. Kaida suddenly jerked back and huffed as though only just realizing she was enjoying the ranger's touch and wasn't about to get quite that sappy about things. word count: 791 Up next was the recently acquired Prisca. The archeops was a stubborn sort but she seemed determined. Raising these ancient pokemon could be tricky. Isihi, her aerodactyl, was certainly a hand full and enjoyed all the attention she got for being a revived, prehistoric pokemon. Prisca didn't seem too concerned by that however. Still she did have a mind of her own.
Elizabeth adjusted the saddle on her back, causing the rocky bird to eye her warily. They hadn't worked together too much either so this would be a new experience for both of them. Luckily Prisca wasn't being nearly as uncooperative as Kaida. Yet the ranger knew she'd have to be ready to have to work through the archeops's stubborn streak.
The ranger climbed aboard the prehistoric bird and leaned in close to her neck. Prisca narrowed her eyes but didn't move. Liz raised a brow as she gave the bird a nudge but Prisca still remained still. The young woman pursed her lips, this could likely take a bit of persuasion. She reached out with her thoughts to touch the ancient mind of the archeops which felt hard as stone.
"Prisca?"
She inquired gently but firmly and the prehistoric bird slowly twisted her neck to look back at Liz. They held each other's gaze a moment then Liz smirked as Prisca gave a low trill in response.
"Shall we fly?"
Now the archeops opened her wings and began racing forward until she reached her full running speed before pushing off the ground pulling them both into the air with a bit of effort. The ranger chuckled, it seemed Prisca wasn't going to respond unless directly asked. She could work with that.
wc: 283 OcqP7oUDp_
Up they went, Prisca's movements feeling rather strange and quite unfamiliar. The ranger leaned forward and gripped with her calves as they climbed into the sky. She'd ridden Ishi who like Prisca was a prehistoric pokemon but she'd moved with more power. Prisca's flying almost felt frantic yet she didn't sense any such emotion within the ancient bird.
Still it was rather jarring and she had to constantly adjust her seat to remain in place. Liz figured that perhaps it was just Prisca getting comfortable with flying with a passenger. She gave the archeops a bit of leeway allowing her to gain her bearings.
Once they reached a comfortable altitude the ranger requested the archeops work on some simple turns. Getting a feel for one another was going to take some time and she figured working on circles would help her and Prisca to anticipate the upcoming movement. Circles were great for bending together and gaining balance.
You didn't want to shift your weight too much to either side when on a circle otherwise you could throw off your mount's balance. Circles forced one into a continuous and every changing pattern when you added a figure eight. Your body had to shift from side to side but only just enough so as to remain centered with your mount. It wasn't too long before the frantic movements no longer felt so frantic and they were moving more in sync.
wc: 238 p_
They dropped down to a multi tiered ring course where now they could work on altitude adjustments and their sync when climbing and falling. Flying was a full three hundred and sixty degree movement that required both being able to move side to side and up and down. The ranger pressed in close to Prisca and the two aimed for the first ring.
Prisca stretched out her wings and dropped down then pulled her wings in close as they cut through the first ring. She gave a strong pull as they passed through then raised upward to make the second ring that was ten feet above them. Liz braced her knees against the archeops' ribs as the bird changed her trajectory.
The prehistoric avian tucked in through the next two rings then spiraled downward for the fourth ring. Liz carefully adjusted her hold with each change in movement. It was precisely calculated changes on both their parts and the two were soon flying smoothly as one. Prisca didn't have quite the speed and power of some of her other fliers but she was at least able to maneuver. The archeops might not be a good candidate for long term flying but at least now she could handle working with a rider and could do short distances when necessary.
wc: 218 p_
Liz requested her to land and Prisca stumbled a little as she regained her footing. They ran along the ground a bit before reaching the end of the course. Here Liz hopped off and recalled the ancient bird. She'd managed to complete the training and now it was onto her final partner. word count: 518 Damara was her last flier to train for the day. The turquoise decidueye had really grown from the young rowlet Elizabeth had first met at the pokemon lab. She was quite impressed with her growth and pleased she'd gotten big enough to be able to fly with. Though she still was on the shy side having evolved had certainly helped her confidence. She'd likely always have a bit more timid nature but now she wasn't shying away from battle or strangers. She still deferred to Liz's direction though and trusted the trainer to make the best decisions.
Once Liz had her equipped the ranger carefully slide onto her back. The decidueye stood a good two feet taller than Liz so she didn't have much trouble accommodating the ranger. Once settled Damara stretched out her powerful wings and took to the air. Liz was fairly comfortable with the decidueye having known her since she was a rowlet and let her take her time getting accustomed to the extra weight.
The pair did a lazy lap around the course then weaved through the bending poles a few times to get themselves adjusted and get in a good warm up. Damara moved with quick decisiveness her timidity not showing at all in her flying. They were mostly alone here save for other trainers undergoing the flight training thus she was able to relax some and just enjoy their time together.
wc: 237 NNMGu25pp_
Now that they were comfortable with one another the pair started trying some more complicated maneuvers. Damara did a twirl then twisted her body upward and began climbing. Every few feet she'd level out and do another twirl then bank up again. Once at a good few hundred feet from the ground she dropped and repeated the same twirl movement.
Liz pressed in close to Damara's body, her hands gripping the decidueye's shoulders as they flew. Damara opened her wings to slow their decent as she leveled off after a final spin. The grass archer then darted in a straight line down the course continually picking up speed. At the corner she twisted sideways and splayed her wings out making the sharp turn without slowing down.
The ranger smirked as she gripped tighter with her legs to maintain her balance though the maneuver did catch her a little off guard. Damara didn't quite have the brute strength of say Ayden or Ryu, but she could definitely move. She cut through the next corner in the same manner as she rotated then put on another burst of speed racing straight down to the far end of the course. Liz leaned in as the wind whipped through her hair and Damara threw open her wings to bring them to a halt least they speed right out of the course.
wc: 227 p_
The run had gone surprisingly smooth and Damara had done quite well. The ranger dismounted and gave Damara a warm pat before recalling her to her pokeball. That seemed to be all she had to train for the moment thus the ranger bid farewell to the instructor and headed back to the pokemon center.
