One last Snore for this round of sleep ripped through the air, once again directed at the Mantine. Polochon was starting to stir as the toxic sludge stained his fur, and he did not look pleased by the time he opened his eyes...

Even if she goes down, it'll be okay. Even if she goes down, I have a back-up. It's not like she won't heal up and be fine when we're done. It's not like it's permanent. It's...
Senara's hands shook at her side. No no no no no, she couldn't watch Baby Girl get taken out. She couldn't watch her faint again. She'd seen it so many times--her poor, precious Pokemon beaten so badly by people she'd called her "friends", by bitches in sheep's clothing, by people she'd surrounded them with willingly. She hated it. Hated it. She couldn't watch it happen again and she wouldn't watch it happen again!!
Baby Girl, shaking off another blast of water, glanced over to her trainer who had yet to throw out another order. Poison continued to course through her body. She wasn't used to feeling so bad from Poison-type damage of all things. But why wasn't--
"R-Récupère, petite fille !! Attends juste jusqu'à la fin, d'accord?!"
Baby Girl growled softly, nodded, and white lights began to surround her, once more drying her off and closing her wounds. This wouldn't last, but she knew Senara was bad at letting her lose. Even if it sucked, she'd do as she was told and recover again.
Eventually, though, she'd probably run out of chances...

Somebody's got some deep-seeded trauma, whoop-whoop.
Mantine [Water Absorb] : 4 HP - 1 HP (snore) = 3 HP Mareanie [Merciless] 10 HP
Mantine wasn't looking great, but Hiro wasn't done now. "Mareanie use Surf on Mantine!" was the call. Whereas some Pokemon might have been alarmed to receive such an order, though, Mareanie already knew why and how. Turning towards the great pancake and releasing a blast of water towards him, Mareanie kicked in Mantine's latent ability: Water Absorb. It wasn't a strong enough attack to really kick the ability into overdrive, but it did reverse one move or so. "Alright! Now Mantine use Water Pulse on Snorlax!" he went on. Mantine, meanwhile, formed some reverberations of sound and sent them crashing at the Snorlax again.

Water Pokemon were officially the bane of Senara's existence, at least until this fight was up. The goddamn Mantine was healing itself off of the Mareanie's attacks and doing damage still--but lucky for her, she had a solution to one of those problems right now. Polochon woke with a start as a spray of water hit his face. Even if it dazed him for a second, he was now awake, and could do something about these pricks...

Baby Girl hadn't been hit this time, so she was good to go--or at least Senara would need to let her move instead of healing, because otherwise she was a sitting duck. With the Mantine healing she had to do something to keep its health from going too high. A few more good swipes should take care of it, but...would Baby Girl stay up long enough to see him go down? After all the hard work she's put in...my poor, poor baby...
"Grattez cette crêpe, petite fille!"
Claws outstretched and a grin plastered in place, Baby Girl rushed the Mantine.

Mareanie yawned softly back at the Snorlax's yawn and shook his head right after. Nope, he was fine for now. Hiro was concerned about Mantine right then, though. "Dodge it, Mantine!" was the order. In a quick dive under the water, the Mantine used up its one true shot away from the Sableye. "Use Water Pulse on Sableye!" was the return order. The Mantine broke from the surface again and released a spray of water. "Mareanie use Venoshock on Sableye!" A vicious smile flashed across the Mareanie's features right then before he shined with poison power and released it.

Ah--
Senara felt her body wobble in place as Baby Girl took two sharp hits from both sides, and managed to leap back to the platform...just for the last rush of Poison in her system to take her down into a kneel, and finally down completely. She was out. Her precious little baby was out. But--but no--it's okay, I have another--but Baby Girl is out, she isn't--it was okay, this was just a fight for fun, she'll be--but she got hurt and I--
She drew out Baby Girl's pokeball like she was on autopilot, pointed it forward, and clicked the little button to return her in a beam of red light. She tried to pretend her hand wasn't shaking. Fine. It's fine. Baby Girl would be healed up and able to go in a little bit. As soon as they were done she'd got to a Pokemon Center and heal her up. She'd be good as new in no time. She just had to get through his fight.
Get through...
"P-Polochon, dors cette Vorastérie...!" Her voice shook. She hated it. But at least she had drawn out Andréa's pokeball through her haze, and tossed it onto the field. Polochon gave her a sideways glance before leveling his gaze at the Mantine. Yawn...

A flash of white light filled the platform and once it cleared, a rather small, stout Psyduck was left in its place, head tilted and looking confused as most Psyduck did. She glanced back at Senara, forward at Hiroto, and then at the pair of Pokemon in front of her. Huh. A battle? She was in a battle? Oh, so many people were here, she was going to get anxious in a crowd like this...ooooh...she didn't like it, not at all, not at all...
"Andréa!" Senara called over the little duck's worry, "Rafale Psy sur l'anémone!!"
Andréa blinked, nodded, and held out her little flippers toward the Mareanie, and a beam of multicolored lights burst forth right in its direction. Senara drew in a slow breath.

The change in Senara would not be missed by Hiro. The way she seemed to lock up just a bit was evident and unlike the feint of her other Pokemon. Whether he’d address it later, though, was a matter of the rest of this battle. Mantine, meanwhile, was yawning a little back at the Snorlax and shook out his body to try and stay awake for now. “Use Water Pulse on Snorlax!” he called. The Mantine did just that.
As Senara released her newest Pokemon, however, Hiro immediately paused. He’d been about to say something but was immediately cut off when a Psybeam went exploding out of the Pokemon and crashing right into the Mareanie. A sharp cry escaped from the latter, and Hiro winced in response. Yikes. That was dangerous. “Ya ok, Mareanie?” The latter was ok— for now. “Use Sludgebomb!” Still awake for now, the Mareanie complied before immediately after falling asleep.

Polochon was getting seriously annoyed by this water. Every other second her was getting splashed and soaked through to the skin. After this, he was never going to fight another Water Pokemon without a towel available. Tch. But at least his "awake" work was done. Senara gave him a small nod and, as he had before, out he went to sleep.

Her head was hurting already, and now she felt nauseous....the things she did for her trainer. Yeesh. Senara gave another sharp order of "Rafale Psy!!" and once more the Psyduck short forth. Another two hits with this and that little Poison-type would be no trouble at all.

Another blast of psychic power had the now sleeping Mareanie grimacing in his sleep. Hiro, too, winced. There was only so much he could do right then and there with Mareanie. Luckily, though he still had: “Mantine use Bullet Seed on Psyduck!” Hiro called. Changing tactics, the Mantine swam quickly towards the Psyduck and broke from the water to launch some unexpected seeds at her.

Of course the fucking Flying/Water-type knew a Grass-type move. That made sense. Senara winced and gave a loud shout of "Déplacez-le, épaisse!!" In shock, the Psyduck squawked and fell backwards, clutching at it's head, and lucky for her the little seed bullets went soaring over her. Senara blinked, sighed, and held the bridge of her nose.
Well, whatever works...I guess...?
[Andréa has used her One (1) Dodge of the Fight]
Fast asleep as per the norm, Polochon let out a long, water-shaking snore towards the Mantine, continuing to snooze away.
Andréa wobbled back and forth, quacking in panic and confusion before she got back up to her flippers. Of all the Pokemon she now had to rely on it was this derpy duck...eh. She was strong enough to take out this one Pokemon effectively by herself, so it was something. "Finis-la, Andréa! Vous avez ça!"
Another beam of light burst from her flippers.

Hiro sweat dropped as the Psyduck avoided the attack… like that….? Huh, heh. Well, that was one way to do it. That was almost kind of funny, though. Too bad he was supposed to be focused on a battle right now!
The Snorlax's snoring reverberated under the water and had Mantine cringing a little again. He could tolerate it for now, but he was starting to feel all the more drowsy. That said, Mareanie took full damage from the Psybeam and went crashing backwards. He struggled briefly awakening and then immediately fainting after. "Oof..." Hiro smiled a little before returning him. "Looks like it's just you and me, Mantine!" he called. Mantine tried to perk up at that but wasn't that energetic now. He was... very sleepy, actually. "Use Bullet Seed on Psyduck!" Shaking his head and managing to dish out the attack, the great pancake fell asleep right after that.

Once more, Polochon snoozed. Once more, the water rumbled and shook with the force of it, the shockwaves from it rushing toward the only opponent on the field.
Andréa, meanwhile, was no so lucky (if one could call it that) as she had been before, and the little seed-like bullets hit her on the side of the head and left her reeling. With a loud cry of "duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck" she swayed, her health dropping rapidly. But all they had to do was keep this up. All they had to do was win! Senara cupped her hands over her mouth to be sure the wobbly creature didn't miss her orders.
"Continuez comme ça, il est presque sorti! Un autre Rafale Psy!"
Mantine: 4 HP - 1 (Snore) = 3 HP – 2 HP (Psybeam) = 1 HP
The rumblings of the Snorlax once more reverberated and injured the Mantine. They were not looking too good. Another blast from the Psybeam collided with the pancake. Hiro winced. "Wake up bud!" he called, but to no avail that turn. Mantine was holding on by a thread that may or may not have actually been there by that point.
With the Mantine nearly out and fast asleep, this should have been a piece of cake. An easy end to an otherwise horribly long and exhausting battle. Senara wasn't experiencing an adrenaline crash yet but she could feel one on the edge of her mind. All it would take is one more blast from Polochon's snoring...
Only...it didn't make contact. Either because the Mantine had dropped too low into the water, or because Polochon was slowly stirring awake himself, the wave of sound went wide and the Mantine was unharmed. Senara sighed. "Andréa, finir ça?"
The Psyduck let out quite a pathetic sounding quack, but all the same extended her wings toward the Mantine and...

Andréa uses Psybeam! [Moderate Attack (65), 90% Accuracy (<10 to Fail)] p_ [Psybeam MISSES! ARE YOU FUCKING--]
Missed. The beams of light went wide, too, as she wobbled from the poison and her low health. Neither attack hit. Senara's mouth hung open for a second. What? What. What sort of Arceus-forsaking twist of fate was going on here. She was so close!! Her victory and her badge were RIGHT THERE!! She just had to land ONE hit--a hit that either of her Pokemon could have pulled off!! But instead, both of them MISSED! And if Andréa got attacked in a round, she'd be out, and all she would have left was Polochon who couldn't even attack unless he was asleep! This was such a waste of fucking time!!!
"VOUS PLAISANTEZ J'ESPÈRE??" She groaned, aiming her voice at the ceiling, not at either of her Pokemon. No, they were fine. They were doing great. She just had to work on their aim. Or throw herself into the pool right now before the Mantine woke up.
Could the ceiling fall on her, actually? It would save her these agonizing seconds.
“…..” Hiro blinked slowly. Both attacks just… just missed??? He took a breath in… and then: “HEY MANTINE! WAKE UP BUDDY!” right out. The Mantine snapped awake rather suddenly, much to Hiro’s surprise. A breath escaped from the latter. “Bullet Seed on Psyduck!” was the order. The Mantine rose up from the water and sputtered out a stream of seeds.

Yeah, that would do it. As soon as the Mantine awoke, a rain of bullets--far, far more than were necessary to handle one little near-fainted Psyduck--fired from the awoken fish and struck Andréa over and over, until the poor little thing wound up flat on the platform, well and truly fainted. Senara withdrew her without a word. Well. The only Pokemon she had left on the field was Polochon, who was awake now and looking at the state of things. And from the bemused look on his face couldn't grasp how the hell they had gotten to this point either. He gave Senara a glance, she shook her head, and with a shrug he rolled back over and fell asleep again. Because he couldn't attack unless he was, in fact, asleep...
...and because being asleep was better than being conscious for this bullshit of a fight.

@hiroto Kaimana WC: 214 Fun fact: the dice rolls in this post were a 1 and 3 before being cut. WTF.
This was… a strange turn of events. Mantine was clinging on for dear life but had somehow managed to down the Psyduck at least. Well, they were just going to keep going then! “Mantine! Use Water Pulse!” Hiro called. Exhausted, beat up, but still conscious, the Mantine jumped from the water and released a pulse of it at the Snorlax. It reverberated for a moment before the sea pancake landed in the water again.

The water smacked the sleeping Snorlax right in the face, but did not budge him. As he slept he snored, and when he snored the whole pool of water rumbled, the shockwaves heading right for the Mantine. Senara held her breath. If this missed she was going to lose her mind...if this hit...then it would be all over. She'd get a badge. And then go pound a fucking straight bottle of gin for how horrible this match had been to her brain.
Boom. That was it. One rolling Snore from the Snorlax, and Mantine collapsed onto the water. Hiro winced and returned him before he could sink down and disappear. A small breathe escaped from him before a wide grin broke onto his features. “CONGRATS!” he called only to back up and take a running leap off the end of the pool and into the water— splashing the Snorlax if he happened to still be there but by no means menacingly now.
He power swam up to the platform closest to Senara, climbed back up with quite a lot of speed and grace, and landed on the platform again only to hold out a tiny but beautiful badge for Senara to take. “You’ve put in a lot of effort! I can see it in the way you work with your Pokemon. I can’t wait to see how far you’ll go!”
They did it? They did it!! THEY DID IT--why was he jumping into the water.
Senara felt the crashing adrenaline pressing at the back of her skull, but straightened up and withdrew her still slightly soggy Snorlax from the field and cradled his pokeball to her chest with a long sigh of relief. "You did so good, you lazy beanbag," she mumbled just in time for Hiroto to pop out of the water and hold out something small and shiny to her. Her eye glittered as she extended a hand to take it. The Bass City gym badge. Wow. She never thought she'd actually get a gym badge of her own. It was kind of surreal.
"I--" she started, stopped, smiled wider, and clutched the little badge tight in her palm. "Thank you so much. Haah, though I think I need to put a little less effort in, if they're all going to be so draining! I won't live past my forties at this rate!" She half-joked as she slid Polochon's pokeball into the pocket of her still slightly soggy coat. That still needed to dry off more. Hmm. Should she wear the badge? Keep it in a case? It really was beautiful; maybe she could go for the full challenge...maybe even try her luck at the championship...hah, wouldn't that be something insane, especially at her age.
Senara exhaled slowly again and, for now, just held the badge in her palm. "I didn't think anything would be more stressful than failing that little pool game earlier, but dang. Guess there's a reason you're a gym leader as well as a marine biologist...phew!"
As soon as she got out of here, she was finding a laundromat and sitting in a dryer.
"But this was fun! Like, really crazy fun." Not completely the truth, but not a lie either. "Thank you so much for the battle, and the badge, sir!"
But first things first, she had to hit the Pokemon Center and get Baby Girl back up.

Hiro grinned. “Just a sec, I’ve got some other stuff for ya too,” he said making a ‘wait’ motion before walking over to one of the walls and somehow opening it again. Taking out a box, he walked back to Senara and held it out. “Inside here’s the TM for Scald, some pen, and some lesser stuff for completing the challenge. It won’t make any of the other gym challenges any less difficult— but it’ll definitely give you a curve ball to throw at ‘em.” He’d give her a wave thereafter and then head back across the gym way. That had been fun!
