This was it. The first step in Marley's journey in the Arciel Gym Challenge! Ok, so it wasn't called that here, but it was pretty much the same in Marley's eyes. He had originally hoped he would be doing this in Galar, but here was pretty good as well. Just not as big compared to the homeland. For one thing, it wasn't televised, or in a big stadium. But hey, it was still a big deal to him dammit!
His mind went over what he would need to do as he stepped into the gym. He had heard that this gym focused on water types, so he picked out his team accordingly. One of the best ways to handle a gym is type advantage after all. His heart was racing as he looked around, taking note of the large pool before him. And yet, there was no sign of the gym leader. Only a bunch of pool toys, poles and the like. Did he come during an off time? Did gyms have business hours or something? He looked around, wondering what was going on.
And then he saw the sign. He looked at it curiously before realizing what he needed to do. So, to face the gym leader, he needed to cross this pool without touching the water. Immediately his mind went to the gym challenges back home. Something the trainer had to do before facing the gym leader. A wide smile spread across Marley's face. "Oh hell yes." he said with a grin. Now this was more like it!
Looking at the pool before him, he started to strip down, removing his shirt, his coat, his shoes, though he kept his pants on for decency's sake. He looked around for something he could use, before his eyes spotted a log laying nearby. Hmm, worth a try he said, before moving the log into the water and stepping onto it. He had to be very careful, trying to keep his balance on the log. Now, lumberjacks did this, right? It shouldn't be too hard. Lumberjacks were basically the miners of the woods.
Trying to keep steady, he started to walk backwards, causing the log to roll forward.
SPLASH! That was the sound of the log rolling right out from under Marley and him hitting the water right after. At least it didn't seem to be too deep but oof!
Marley let out a yelp as the log slipped out from under him, causing him to land into the cold water with a splash. Well, thank goodness he had stripped down before doing this, but still, his pants were wet, and that was uncomfortable! He pulled himself out of the water, trying to shake the excess off of him.
"Ok, time for another approach." He looked over, noticing that the log hadn't gone too far. Gripping one of the poles, he used it to bring the log back. Taking care, he stepped back onto it, though this time using the pole to gently push himself, and the log, along like a make-sift raft.
"F%$#!" Marley yelled out as he hit the water hard. That time it actually hurt. He almost had hit his head on the side of the pool. Quickly regaining his bearings, he swam back to the edge and climbed out. Ok, so perhaps the log was NOT the way to go. He looked around for anything else he could use.
His eyes fell on a pair of disks that one could wear on their feet, water shoes of sorts. Well, he may as well give them a try. He slipped the water shoes on, before carefully stepping out onto the water. Take it slow, take it carefully, and get across this dang pool.
Well, this was going so much better. Marley gave a small sigh of relief as he stood there, effectively walking on water. He looked around carefuly, trying not to move too much, as he continued to make his way across the pool, keeping his movements slow and careful.
Yes! Yes! This was working. Over half way done with this exercise, and then he could get to the real challenge of this gym battle. But he had to keep himself calm. No sense in getting overly excited and falling. Taking a deep breath to calm his excited nerves, he slowly continued to make his way across the pool. Almost there. So close!
The sound of clapping echoes through the area, and the wall that had previously been just beyond the end of the pool raises up. A pink haired man stands there smiling brightly. "Congrats, your persistence paid off!" the man grins and finally stops clapping. "My name is Hiro Kaimana. I'd say welcome to the pool, but you've already gotten your feet wet." He grinned. "Do you wanna dry off or come on back?" He thumbed backwards to a much larger pool that spread out behind him now.
"Hell yeah!" Marley yelled out, pumping his fist as he stepped onto the other side of the pool. He had done it! It looked simple, but damn that was surprisingly challenging. Not a bad challenge for a gym.
His attention was caught by the sound of clapping. Marley looked over, seeing a tall man with pink hair and glasses standing in front of an entrance that just opened up. So, this was the gym leader he was going to fight. I mean, who else would it be? He hadn't seen any gym trainers here. "Nice to meetchya. Marley Hyde here, lookin' to get me first badge." The guy seemed nice enough, and the excitement of going through his first gym battle was rushing through him.
At his offer to dry off, well, Marley figured he should take it, despite his excitement. "Sure. Give me a moment, I'll be right with ya." He jogged around to the other side of the pool to collect his clothing, before running back to grab a towel or something to dry himself off.
A couple of towels would be fished up from a stand on the other side of the wall and presented to Marley once he got his belongings and things together. After that, Hiro’s features became a little more serious. “Alright, single battle? Double battle? How many Pokemon are ya throwing at me?” he asked stretching a little as he waited for the answer.
After Marley spoke, he’d give a resounding “Sounds good” and start over towards his end of the pool. Coming to stand here, he set his hand on his hip. “Go ahead and release your first Pokemon,” he encouraged. Challengers gotta go first, after all.
Once Marley was all good to go, the lanky Galarian gave an excited smirk. He had a good feeling about this. He had picked his team specifically to counter water types. "Singles battle. And I've got three of my mates comin' right at ya!"
And with that settled, it was time for the battle to begin. As Hiro took his position on the opposite side of the pool, Marley thought for a moment which pokemon to use. Better start off small. No sense throwing the big guys out right away. Get a good feeling as to how this guy operated.
"Alright, come on out Shep!" Marley called out, throwing the ball towards one of the islands. With a bright flash, the small, happy form of Marley's Yamper appeared.
Hiro immediately grinned on seeing the Yamper there on one of the islands. “Wow what a cutie,” he grinned shifting to his belt to enlarge a Pokeball. “Let’s see how you deal with this! Come on out— Marshtomp!” The ball was tossed into the air and broke open. A light sprung forth taking the form of a Marshtomp on one of the stands before breaking into a fully colored one. The Pokemon cried out happily and clapped her fins and twirling once before stomping down on the platform and looking ready and raring to go. “I always give the challenger the first move!” Hiro called. “Let’s have some fun!”
This was it, his first gym battle. His pokemon was all raring to go, and now to see who the first opponent would be. Marley's heart was pounding with excitement.
And then the Marshtomp appeared and Marley's expression fell flat.
"Well S^%#," the Galarian muttered, "Ya really don't waste any time, do ya?" Already he could see his strategy falling apart. Two out of three of his pokemon were electric types, and this guy just HAD to have the pokemon that was IMMUNE TO ELECTRICITY.
Marley let out a sigh. Well, there was one way he could salvage this, though there was only one thing he could do in this situation. "Ok Shep, change of plans. Bite the S%$# out of it!" Shep gave a loud, happy yap as he dove into the water, paddling over towards the Marshtomp with the intention of, as his trainer put it, 'biting the s#$% out of it'.
As the Yamper leapt into the water and paddled towards the Marshtomp, the latter hopped into the water as well and blazed passed the yellow hound it in blur of blue and orange. No teeth would sink into those scaly fins that time! Twisting around in the water, the Marshtomp stuck her tongue out and made a teasing expression towards the Yamper.
Hiro grinned a little. “Tackle!” he called out over the water. Below the surface Marshtomp rebounded off the side of the pool and went shooting at the Yamper this time in an attack.
It was only natural to expect a water type to have the mobility advantage against a land dwelling pokemon. Hell, Yampers tended to have speed issues on land! I mean, look at those little legs! As the Marshtomp practically swam circles around Shep before closing in, Marley felt nervousness grip him. "Shep! Bite that thing as it comes past!"
As Marshtomp closed in, Shep seemed to move his little body out of the way like a little sausage, attempting to chomp at Marshtomp as she went past.

As the tiny electric sausage managed to avoid the body collision of the mudfish, the latter went bursting up from the water’s surface. The Yamper’s attempt to snag some teeth into the Marshtomp’s foot-fins came close! But not close enough as the Marshtomp flipped and landed on one of the islands. A bright and playful call escaped from the Marshtomp. She was having quite a bit of fun! Hiro laughed too. “Not bad,” he complimented warmly.
“Let’s kick it up a notch! Marshtomp, Mud Shot!” Hiro directed. The Marshtomp yelled, opened her maw, and spewed forth a gunky mud towards the Yamper.
Aw hell, here it comes! The super effective moves. Marshtomp's ground typing rendered Shep's electric moves useless, but that didn't stop Marshtomp's ground moves from being super effective. "Shep! Look out!" Marley yelled out. Shep saw the glob of mud flying at him and dove under the water. The mud shot hit the water with a splash, but didn't go deep enough hit Shep, the mud simply floating on the surface.
Marley let out a relieved laugh. "Good job Shep, now keep at it! Bite, bite, BITE!"
Like a small, furry torpedo, Shep swam towards the island where Marshtomp was sitting, leaping out of the water, teeth ready to bite at the water pokemon
Now they were really making waves, weren’t they? As the Yamper dove under the water’s surface to avoid the mud, Hiro smiled a little. That was one way to use the water for sure! As the Yamper came at Marshtomp again, though, they both were ready. “Back in the water ya go,” he called to her. Just as the Yamper dove up from the water, the Marshtomp leaned back and dove into it disappearing under the surface again.
Hmmm. Neither one was managing any hits yet. Let’s see. “Growl under the water!” he called. A reverberation akin to a whale call echoed out now.
