How many years had it been since he'd been inside a Professor's lab? [break][break] Kaisei Nebula fidgeted with the sleeve of his coat, feeling dreadfully out of place, though he couldn't say why. New years were said to be auspicious times for new beginnings, though he supposed in many ways, this was not a beginning at all, but a resumption. The resumption of a dream of a ten-year-old kid, standing out in the snow on a day very much like this one. A chill in the air brushed his hair against the back of his neck, spurring his feet to carry him inside. [break][break] No, not a dream. For him, these days, having a trained Pokemon by his side was a matter of survival. [break][break] The lobby was largely empty, sans a few aides who barely noticed him amid their hustling and bustling until he took the initiative to swiftly move in front of one as they were walking past. "Excuse me for the interruption. I'm here for an appointment with Professor Holly, to receive my start-- to receive a Pokemon," he said. He briefly flashed his ten-years-old trainer's license, for emphasis. The aide squeaks on being stopped and seems to only then register Kaisei’s presence. “Oh! Uhm… come with me,” she answered before making a gesture to follow. Walking through a few doors, she paused at the professor’s and gently knocked on the door before stepping back and waiting.
Holly looked up from the paperwork she’d been reading. “Come in,” was the call-order. The aide was quick to step forward again and open the door, explaining why she was there and then stepping back to let Kaisei in. Holly adjusted her glasses, looked at the time, and then shifted from her chair to standing. “I see, welcome Kaisei Nebula. I have your Pokemon here.” She turned and walked to a shelf where a Pokeball case was pulled. Fishing out three Pokeballs, she then tossed them forward.
Really, if he didn't know any better, he'd swear he was back in Kanto. A Bulbasaur, a Charmander, and... what was that other creature there? Mudkip? Certainly it wasn't as fierce looking as the other two (he tried to push the memory of his first starter, also a Water-type, out of the back of his mind). The more he examined it, the more it seemed to shrink away from him. And it was small, to boot. He dismissed it out of hand. [break][break] That left the other two, Bulbasaur and Charmander. He was fairly familiar with both. The Bulbasaur was unusually large for its species, and it regarded him placidly as he stared it down. A fine choice, to be sure, malleable, though perhaps not the best for the current winter weather? Which left the Charmander. When he looked at it, the lizard Pokemon glared back, as if sizing him up for a fight. He knelt down and smiled at it. The other two starter choices mirrored him with smiles of their own, but the Charmander remained as stoic as before, impressive even in the face of someone much larger than it. And come to think of it, didn't Bulbasaur evolve into a lumbering ground creature, but to have a Charizard of his own... [break][break] "Thank you, Professor, it seems I've made my choice," Kaisei said, standing back up. "I'd like to start my journey with Charmander." [break][break] Notes: 197 WC[break] Surprise Absol incoming?
As Kaisei made his decision, Holly gave a brief nod and returned the other two. “I’m sure he’ll make a fine partner. Consider giving him a name to match,” she answered putting the two Pokeballs back in the case before pressing a button on the side to open up another slot. “I also have another Pokemon for you,” she stated taking out the Pokeball and handing it to Kaisei to toss this time.
Upon returning the Charmander to its Pokeball, the Professor's suggestion that Kaisei give his new Pokemon a fitting name caused his train of thought to momentarily stumble. "Of course," he said reflexively, although deep down inside he questioned if he even knew how to do such a thing. As a child he had given all of his Pokemon simple nicknames, and never really shook the habit. He supposed it was something he could worry about later. [break][break] Then the Professor upped the ante of strangeness by handing him another Pokeball. "For me?" Gods, he sounded like a Chatot. He wondered what the reason was - was it a simple mixup, or did he perhaps have some mysterious benefactor who had gone to the trouble of arranging to have this Pokeball placed in his hands? It occurred to him that he didn't even know what kind of Pokemon this was. "Well, come on out..." he said as he lightly bounced the Pokeball through the air and against the floor. [break][break] The room was filled with a blinding explosion of light. When Kaisei could see again, he found himself staring at a sheer white mass of fur. He peered closely at it but was unable to discern a face. [break][break] "Hello?" [break][break] A guttural grunt responded from above, and Kaisei's eyes widened as he tilted his head up. [break][break] What he had initially mistaken for an overgrown head of fur like a sheepdog was in fact the Pokemon's chest hair, and its face, bright red with piercing green eyes, loomed above Kaisei. Even higher, jutting out the top of its head, was a horn in that same red color, shaped like a scythe. The horn was at least a foot long and scraped the ceiling when the beast moved its head. The air itself seemed to glimmer around it. [break][break] An Absol. A shiny Absol. This has to be some mistake, thought Kaisei. There's no way-- even if I tried to sell it later it would be way too easy to trace back to me-- and suddenly the Pokemon had bent down one of its front knees, lowering its head to be face-to-face with Kaisei. It muttered something again in that strange language of Pokemon he had never quite figured out after eight years of training, and tilted its head to the side. [break][break] "What are you...?" The man turned back to the Professor. "What is it saying? Does it want--"Hiss."Does he--" A louder, more insistent hiss that caused him to jerk a step back. "Does she? She is a she. Okay. Does she want to come along with me and--" Shit, he hadn't remembered to give the Charmander a name. Think, Kaisei. Red? Too obvious. Orange? Sunny? Sunshine. Haru? Haru it was. [break][break] "Come on out, Haru," he said, releasing the Charmander, who looked up at Kaisei with confusion when he realized he was still back in the lab. "I'm your trainer. Kaisei. And she" --he gestured to the Absol-- "is also going to be our partner. If that's okay. That is okay, right?" He looked between Professor Holly and the Absol, seeking some form of confirmation.[break][break] The Absol only rolled her eyes. [break][break] Notes: 527 WC[break] "I ask of you. Are you my Trainer?"
Professor Holly said nothing as the Absol was released but did take a moment to adjust her glasses in the span of the short interaction. She had her reasons for this second choice of Pokemon, and it was up to Kaisei to determine why. Turning thereafter, she went to grab something else off the shelf, a small case with Pokeballs and potions. Walking around the massive Absol, she then held them out to Kaisei. “I have prepared some items for you to use on your journey,” she stated handing them over.
It looked like the Professor was happy to treat this as a routine transaction, so Kaisei supposed he'd follow her lead. He accepted the gift of the Pokeballs and Potions and slung them into his backpack. Given that he had no further business here, he turned to leave. "Let's go, Haru, Saber." The meaning of "a large curved cavalry sword," that was a fitting name for her. [break][break] Both Pokemon glowed a faint red before being sucked back into their Pokeballs. The Charmander he wouldn't mind, truthfully, especially in this cold weather, but he couldn't be seen just... walking around town with the Absol. Not that she would fit through the door anyway. "Thank you again, and have a good day," he said cheerfully to the Professor, as well as the aide who had walked him in when again he passed by her in the hall. [break][break] In the back of his mind, he wondered what he had just gotten himself into. [break][break] Notes: 160 WC[break] Thread is complete.
