Student (Aiming for Prostheticist) Part-Time Metalworker
Rustboro City, Hoenn
Derby was graced with a hell of a lot of her fathers stubbornness, as well as a large spoonful of perseverance. She's very set in her ideas on what she wants, and what she needs to accomplish, to the point she can be oblivious to the wants and needs of others in order to get what she thinks is good, done. This has resulted in a lot of loss of friendships over the years, however she refuses to falter, and holds her dreams incredibly high.
She's incredibly compassionate, if she hears something is wrong with others she'll be the first to offer a hand, even without thinking it through. She adores helping people, and being able to help people who need help. It's what she craves to do, what she aims to do with her research. If she's not helping people, or doing something she gets restless- she can't comprehend it when people who look like they need help refuse it.
Around strangers she's generally incredibly nice, but often can refuse to open up properly, about her hopes, dreams and aspirations, unless she's incredibly close with them.
The clanging of metal, the heat of a furnace- the embrace of a father, the wonder of the modern age. Derby was raised in Rustboro City, surrounded by stone yet always feeling warm and comfortable in her life. She was practically raised in her fathers workshop, where he created marvellous metal sculptures for tourists and people of the city alike, hard at work day by day. Her mother was a painter, and would spent day after day creating beautiful murals and canvas work for everybody to see! Her parents were slightly older than most other peoples parents, simply because they wanted to wait until they felt stable enough to had a child, but that never bothered Derby.
Growing up, she constantly found herself tinkering or meddling with the scraps in her fathers workshop, piecing together nuts and bolts to show her dad, creating silly little games to entertain dad while he worked, tiny dolls made out of wire to give to her classmates, she truly relished in being around metal- the smell, the feel- it got to the point if she wasn’t around metal, she was tinkering with it, or thinking about it. Her parents always encouraged her creativity and behaviour, sometimes coming up with little challenges and tasks for Derby to go about doing like create a holder for a paintbrush, or create a working spring contraption in under an hour.
In class she was an interesting case, constantly showing everybody her new creations, or talking about them, she’d always make the other kids cute little gifts or presents, especially for their birthday! She adored clowning around with others and seeing how happy her creations made them- that was until she noticed one of the little skitty dolls she made for a friend in the bin… but that didn’t bother her! She just had to try harder!
She was oblivious to kids that disliked her view on things, or her constant chatter about how much she loved creating things. She had a group who she could cherish who loved what she gave her and who welcomed her creativity with excited giggles and open hearts, and that’s all she needed. Topped with the constant love and support from her parents, she grew to be able to create complex metal pieces and be able to work on creating simple, functioning battery operated toys by twelve.
Highschool she spent a lot of her time helping out in her dads workshop, they’d been getting more commissions and work as of late and she’d become quite the handy worker. She began learning more complex skills from her father, who’s father had taught him proper metalworking as a child, however her thirst for being able to do more through utilising metal was never sated- there were so many possibilities! So many things could be created!
Through school she discovered engineering, and ways that metal could help the world in the long-run. How to put specific pieces together along with electronics to create pieces that could be beneficial to others- it intrigued her, to say the least. She spent a lot of time bothering teachers and staying back after school in order to gather information that’d quench her thirst- but one had gained her attention. A substitute teacher from her English class- who had a metal arm. She constantly saw them picking at it, pushing at it-
She kinda wanted to help. She’d all but ordered for them to show her their arm, and despite their hesitance they allowed her to take a look. She spent a solid fortnight analysing it, creating notes, sketching up it’s look, it’s inner workings- what it was missing. Through cross referencing things on the internet and what she’d already learnt she found out the elbow piece to their arm had been created too narrow, and as such the piece interfered with the inner bolts in the forearm. Needless to say, with her dads help they managed to help create new pieces for the arm. Every step of the process enthralled her, especially being able to help somebody in the long run- it made her feel useful!
The rest of highschool after her breakthrough with the arm kids often came to her with issues even loosely based on what they thought she was good at- she was asked to rewire cars, fix laptop screens, because they hadn’t understand that what she wanted- what she thrived from- was working with metal. Being skin to skin with it, able to heat it and mould it carefully- cut it- piece it together to create something great.
However. Just after highschool graduation everything changed. She’d been out with her group of friends in Slateport City scouting out possible universities to attend in the upcoming year when it hit- the ultra beast attack. It changed her, and her families lives forever. Their home, and further workshop had been all but ruined, crushed, burnt up. Her mother’s lifelong work had been ruined in the chaos but she’d managed to evacuate to safety before anything could happen to her- her father however was a stubborn man. He had refused to leave his workshop in times of crisis and paid the price- a piece of rubble had crushed him at the torso and he had been found days later barely alive.
Paralysed from the waist down, her father would never be the same. Though his chipper attitude about life never changed, Derby’s mum became incredibly guarded and cautious about everything, and never returned to painting. The trio had attempted to resume like in Hoenn, but being able to afford a house became difficult when mixed in with the cost of Derby’s fathers therapy and surgeries- and inevitably they began looking for somewhere cheaper in the long run for the family.
Amidst this, whilst scouting out wreckage near land they were debating on buying Darby had found an abandoned Fennekin pup, missing one of their front forelegs that had become all but incredibly infected- Fennekin weren’t native to the region, and Derby felt an overwhelming sense of needing to help the creature. As her parents scouted out areas to live, Derby began working on a temporary fix to help the Fennekin- creating a metal stump of sorts that could slip on and off Fennekin’s leg with ease.
Eventually, after realizing everything in Hoenn was too expensive, and compensation for the attacks was space, they found Arciel. A region beginning to rebuild, and with a renowned science university. The family found themselves moving over there with nothing but carry on luggage, credentials and hopes. Due to the rebuilding, and Arciel’s governments compensation plan for those affected by Ultra Beasts attacks the family were able to build a large house in the midst of Ivy Town with wheelchair accessibility and a large garage space for the family to continue all things metalworking.
Her father, despite how he found himself, was more than willing to offer his services to everybody in Arciel, helping to create parts for buildings, repair literally anything metal that was broken such as pipes, satellites, whatever he could access to feel like he was helping. Derby couldn’t understand why her father could be so upbeat, especially with everything that’d happened to him. He wasn’t stressing over minor details, about what he couldn’t do- he was just… living.
She began studying engineering, however found out quickly that the subject wasn’t exactly what she was hoping for. She wanted to be able to help pokemon, help people- create things they could use like limbs, like monitors, like wheelchairs- she wanted to be able to discover things that would make pokemon and people with physical disabilities able to function to a higher standard- she just wanted to help people like her dad.
One of her sub-classes she began studying was the Physiology of pokemon, she wanted to learn more about them however she could, how they worked, how they were build- so if they were missing something she’d be able to supply or aid it with what she created- so that anything she created wouldn’t harm them. She moved to further study anatomy and biomechanics, changing her major from engineering altogether after realizing that studying anatomy would give her job opportunities in the prosthetics industry, and biomechanics would further what she learnt in Hoenn to be able to make it more useful.
Within University, a lot of her time was spent hiding her frustrations to what life had become in studying, constantly working and never letting herself have a break she was always busy. She wasn’t able to help people if she didn’t have her major, if she didn’t have her credentials. Her mother, worried for her had forced her to take a break from university- to take a gap year. Her health was more important than anything else, afterall, and she couldn’t see her daughter being able to take much more of the course if she kept it up.
For a year Derby spent her time with her father, working odd jobs around Arciel and constantly questioning him about his choices, about new surgeries and trials that had opened up that’d help him- but he constantly claimed that he was fine, that he was enjoying life and healthy, and that there he didn’t want to deal with the risk. Derby still refused to understand, too stubborn in her own views on what should be.
One of the places Derby and her father went to work on was an orphanage, full of children abandoned after the attacks. One of them reminded her very much of her when she was little, asking Derby and her dad a bunch of questions about what they were working on, what they were fixing- the child themselves had been missing an eye but that didn’t seem to stop them at all. Derby felt her heart drop as she worked for a week in the orphanage, the kid following her, helping her with tasks eagerly-
She practically begged her dad to adopt them, but he refused. He was too old and with the way they were living knew they wouldn’t be able to support him- but Derby was set in her ways. At the ripe age of 21 she adopted Skye as her own, however more so as a sibling than as a parent. She wanted to be able to help Skye, she wanted to give him a life around metal to, to be able to enjoy things like she had.
And her mother, when learning of the news and helping Derby with paperwork was thrilled. Through Skye, Derby was able to view life differently, Skye adored her Fennekin, but also was pretty nosy about literally everything in Derby’s life. When Derby began going back to university and Skye began school the two (mainly Derby) would often help each other with homework, Derby would demonstrate or go on about what she learned and would take Skye out for midnight burger runs.
So life continued like this, studying and giving Skye the best life she can. She often visited pokemon shelters, or orphanages and attempted to help the kids or the pokemon in it with what knowledge she had learned. She began one of the go-to’s for creating a quick and functioning limb in Arciel.
Derby’s set to graduate soon, however her final thesis needs her to go out in the real world and collect real life examples of what she wishes to work on, build parts and compare usages- see how battle can work even with prosthetics, see what materials work best- and for once, she was going to enjoy herself along the way. Once she's got her majors in anatomy and physiology, she can go further into a postgraduate course to become a prostheticist- but first, graduating.
Derby is gonna change the world- or at least she aspires to. Her main goal is to help disadvantaged pokemon and people, primarily through the useage of metalworking or inventions she's able to help make. But she knows that can take some time. She wants to be able to help her "sibling" grow up and understand the harsh reality of the world, and maybe have them help her one day, She also want's to do what she can now to help pokemon and humans in shelters who are recovering from the ultra beasts attacks.
5'8" / 172cm
Derby has spent years working with her father, with heavy equipment and hauling heavy metals here and there- which has given her some fairly built muscles. She's proud of them, and how she looks, and often goes to the gym in an effort to keep up how she looks.
She isn't much for fashion, and literally wears whatever is most comfortable to her- whether that be tank tops in the winter, slacks and trackies in summer, you can count on her to wear things typically when they shouldn't be worn.
Derby has a large tattoo on her right arm, of a klang. It used to be her fathers mascot for his old metalworking shop, and she often shows it off with pride.
Her Aura takes the form of a variation of cogs turning and combining with each other, warm in colour and tone every time they move bright white and yellow sparks erupt, however every so often they get stuck. They move faster when she's thinking or has an idea, and slower when she's low on energy or bored.

She created Bender's (her Fennekins) metal leg from scratch, and probably has managed to help a handful of other pokemon with the same thing. A lot of her pokemon will be adopted, rather than caught, from the adoption center, or taken from discovery if she stumbles across a poke who needs help.
