Tam Flynn
Age 55 Birthday Oct 27, 1964 Gender Male Pronouns He/Him Orientation Straight Faction League Class Trainer Rank New Trainer Occupation N/A Hometown Viridian City, Kanto Current Residence Traveling | Tell us a little about yourself. How would you describe yourself? "Tam Flynn", Flynn said while extending his hand to the interviewer. They shook hands, Flynn's callused hands felt like toughened leather. He removed his black suit jacket and placed it on the back of the metal foldout chair before sitting upon it himself. He placed his elbows onto the table and clasped his hands together resting his chin on them and stared directly into the interviewer's eyes. Flynn's stare was cold and unwavering before shifting to a warm genuine smile that even reached his narrow eyes. " How would I describe myself?" he asked with a low even voice only slightly graveled with age, but it carried clearly throughout the room. "I suppose that would depend on the context," he said and his expression became thoughtful for a moment. He sat up straight and as though reciting from a list he gestured with his hand as he spoke. "When it comes to Pokemon, I play to win. Battling is the only way to feel truly alive. It is the only way to be truly in sync with your partners, your Pokemon. I am confident and capable, and age has only reinforced all of this." He paused a moment to let the interviewer keep up with his notes before he continued, "I am quite reserved outside of Pokemon and battles, and I do not hedge on my values for anyone young or old. He paused one last time before he stated with a grin, "and I'm full of piss and vinegar!" Why are you interested in the class you've chosen? "I am the consummate battler, there is nothing in the world like it!" Flynn said, his arms spread wide as if to encapsulate reverence in the way he spoke. His face lit up and came truly alive for the first time during the interview. "The rush of adrenaline, the blood pounding in your ears, the clash of will against will!" He paused for emphasis, "It is a high unlike any other in the world." He seemed lost in his reverie for a moment before coming back to reality. "I have battled in many regions, stood at the top of others, and spun my wheels in others. I'm too old to change my ways now, let alone my chosen lifestyle." Why are you interested in training in Arciel? Why not another region? "I have been all over the world, as previously stated. I have stood on rock-solid foundations of the Indigo Plateau, nervous and unsure. I have breathed in the fragrance of the flowers covering Ever Grande City, full of pride and confidence." Once more he seemed lost in reverie before he continued. "Countless victories and losses, moments of righteous anger and total despair. Age will catch up with me soon despite all of this, and I would like one last hurrah before age forces my retirement." Flynn looked sad at the thought, but he masked his expression before continuing, "While in Unova I heard much about Arciel, and I figured what better way to find out more about the region than spending the final decade of my career here." What do you consider your best attributes? They can be physical, mental, social, or anything else. "Willpower" Flynn stated simply, but when the interviewer appeared to want more from him he expanded, "I do not bend or break, If I lose or fail I get better." He clasped his hands under his chin again, his elbows resting on the table. "Failures are the only way to improve, and even an old fart like me can learn new tricks." "I feed upon those failures. They stoke my fire and let me tell you, my bones are always cold." That look returned to Flynn's expression, but after getting to know him a little better the interviewer should have known it not for coldness, but hunger. Not a hunger for food, but hunger for challenge, for someone to test himself against. A gnawing never-ending hunger, ever-present within his mind. What do you consider your worst attributes? Be honest, now! "Age." Flynn laughed, crows feet wrinkling and becoming more pronounced around his eyes. "I'm getting old, I can't go like I used too anymore. I get winded easier. My bones ache all the time." He shifted parts of his body just so, and bones creaked and popped for the interviewer. "Nothing works as it used too." He sighed, "I may not bend or break, but my body certainly doesn't follow this philosophy" He looked down at himself, and for the first time the air of calm confidence slipped as Flynn surveyed his aging body. "My time grows short, and the thing I love most in the world will soon be taken from me. Not by any aggressor, but instead by the grinding wheel of time. Slowly grinding us all to dust." Flynn's facade cracked for the first time during the interview. He looked his age now, the flaws in his skin grew more pronounced, his posture slumped, and he just looked tired. He was a man who was slowly having everything he loved taken from him, taken from him by an enemy that he, nor anyone, could not beat. What was your childhood like? How was school? "It's not important," he said, his head coming up and now he looked annoyed. It was clear that he was not comfortable facing his own mortality in front of an audience. After a small awkward silence, however, he sighed. "I suppose that is not enough." "I do not want to talk about my childhood with you or anyone. I have long since come to terms with some of the things that happened during that time, and I have no desire to reopen those wounds to people I do not know," he said, as his air of confidence returned. "School was uneventful. I did my work, I graduated, and I moved on" (OOC: Flynn's parents ran a poke'mart in Viridian, They cared for him well and for the most part his childhood was uneventful. He doesn't really remember most of it. The memories of many mundane days blur together, and honestly aside from nostalgia for childish things he doesn't dwell on it. The reason he declines to discuss it with the interviewer besides his memory is that he witnessed his best friend being murdered, and he could have stopped it. In his grief and out of desperation he battled the killer and won with a pokemon that was pretty much the family pet. He realized in retrospect that if he had done that at first, he wouldn't have witnessed his friend's execution, and it's a big driving force in why he pushes himself through leagues, and battles. He doesn't want to feel powerless again. This is also why his age is catching up to him so hard, he can't stop it and it is making him feel weak. He has long since come to terms with all of this, and he does not dwell on the event much as it doesn't define him like it used too in his youth.) How is your relationship with your family? "My relationship with my family is fine," he tilted his head. "I mean I don't have much left, my wife has returned to dust, my parents long since as well. My children are all grown and are busy living their own lives." Flynn thought it was an odd question to ask someone his age "I have good relationships with all my remaining family members, If a bit distant due to my chosen career path." he shrugged not sure what else to say. What do you like to do for fun? "You mean aside from battles?" Flynn asked, he cupped his chin and rubbed gently. "I like to read. You know books, articles, magazines, lectures, and anything that is printed text." He reached into his pocket and produced a small novel with a faded and worn bookmark, extending out from the pages. He replaced it in his pocket and straightened up, "You can learn many things from the written word, and I honestly believe that reading as much as I do has made me better." Flynn flashed a genuine smile at the interviewer. What are your feelings on romance? "Are you serious?" Flynn's smile faded and he looked at the interviewer, amused. "I'm nearly 60 years old and a widower. I don't have a lot of prospects for future romance." He gestured at himself in a mocking manner. "Hell I would just be happy if all the plumbing still works", he continued with a laugh. What are your goals for the future? Short-term and long-term. "That answer should be obvious at this point," Flynn said, growing serious once more. He stood from the chair and leaned over the interviewer. "I intend on taking on every gym one by one in the short term, and this regions league in the long term. The Grand Tournament seems like a good place to test myself against the best this region has to offer" He reached to his belt and lifted a Pokeball, "Just me and my new partner to start with, but I plan on catching any and every Pokemon that will join me in my pursuits." Flynn replaced the Pokeball on his belt and sat back down. The serious demeanor fading into the more pleasant one he had used for most of the interview. If you could be a Pokemon, what species or typing would you choose and why? "I am perfectly happy not being a Pokemon, thank you." Flynn grinned as he paused for a moment before continuing. "I would prefer to be a Ground Type. Much like the unshakable, immovable, unyielding bedrock under our feet." He splayed his hands to his sides, gesturing at the floor below them as he spoke. What do Pokemon mean to you? Once again Flynn removed the Pokeball from his belt, but this time he placed it on the table between himself and the interviewer. "Pokemon are wonderful and powerful creatures."His eyes locked to the Pokeball as he spoke. "Without them, many of the things we take for granted could not exist! Pokemon are our partners, and we must treat them with the utmost respect. Because just as they rely on us, we rely upon them equally." Anything else you'd like to tell us about before you go? "Not really, sorry if you were expecting more." Flynn smiled once more and stood. He tipped his cap at the interviewer, retrieved his Pokeball, and extended his hand to shake with the interviewer before leaving. |
