After passing east of Mount Grumble, the only thing keeping Josh awake was the embryo inside his Egg banging against it from the inside, With how much maintenance he would need to do on his team and his equipment, he wouldn't be having mucn of a day tomorrow...or was it today? The moon was pretty high in the sky - it was difficult to tell whether it was past midnight.
Generally, the only times Josh would be awake for more than 18 consecutive hours was at conventions, where sleep schedules didn't matter much. With Aslan being such an early riser, plus the Dratini with Arceus-only knows what kind of personality, his sleep schedule for the foreseeable future would likely be "whenever he could".
As Josh rode eastward toward Fuji, the increasing number of small lakes and ponds helped his bloodshot eyes remain open, the light of the nearly full moon reflecting off the surface. Twilight stopped for a short moment, noticing two Mudkip and a Marshtomp sleeping fairly close to the road. She slowed to a brisk walk, giving the water-types a wide berth as to avoid waking them up in the middle of the night.

Fuji Town was finally visible on the horizon, after the moon had crested. It was after midnight - even if he made it to Fuji Town, every inn's check-in desk was probably closed. The only way he would get any kind of sleep would be to turn his Pokémon in at the Pokémon Center and sleep in the lobby at trough hours. The last time he did that was six years ago. That was in Azalea back home, and he remembered waking up surrounded by nurses.
As Twilight continued on, Josh could not stop yawning, the standout Pokémon finding it contagious. With the Dratini embryo throwing itself against the inside of the egg, the Absol interpreted the motion as directional commands from her rider. The result was her staggering from one side of the road to the other. Her legs started to buckle; though she was the toughest Pokémon Josh had, even she had her limits.

After another round of yawning back and forth, Josh's eyelids became very heavy, Twilight's likewise a couple of minutes later. He slipped off the white Pokémon, sprawled over the middle of the road. In the middle of his fall, he bumped the activation button on Aslan's Poké Ball by mistake, calling on a Litleo who looked very confused by a collapsed Josh and Absol. He gently pat Josh's arms, then shoulders, then face with his paws to try to wake him, but all he got was snoring about as loud as a whisper. He was out cold. In the direction of town was a roaming Duskull that floated the sleeping trainer's way. Aslan caught sight of it and watched it closely. When it drifted a little too close for comfort, the fire-type growled at the ethereal Pokémon, the embers dripping from his mouth enough to cause the Duskull to turn tail.

When dawn's first light came over the horizon, a piece of eggshell went flying toward the back of the sleeping Absol's head. Another whizzed straight at Josh's arm, and neither were aroused. A third got caught in Aslan's tuft of red fur, the fire-type instinctively burning it to a crisp and turning around to see where it came from. There was a giant crack all the way down the egg! One more push, and it was going to hatch!
A Dratini was born! And a big one, at that!
The frustrated-looking Dragon-type, in the process of hatching, had flung one half of the eggshell toward a Magikarp that had poked its head out of a nearby lake. It was going so fast that the half of the shell lodged itself between two of its scales, triggering an evolution. It was about to roar when it noticed a young, sweating Litleo keeping watch over a sleeping Absol and human. Mmmm...fresh meat! Seeing Josh's grim situation, Aslan stood close to Josh, faced the hulking, flying water-type, and roared. It wasn't particularly loud - that would come upon evolution, but the cub was hoping it would be loud enough to wake him.

Both Josh and his Pokémon didn't so much as move - they were completely out cold. The brave, even foolish Litleo ran toward the Gyarados with reckless abandon, leaping toward the giant serpent's now-lowered chin. Clearly that was not going to work against something ten times his size - the charging water-type slammed him into the ground with the force of a waterfall just by shifting its trajectory to bounce him out of the way. Aslan had sprained both of his front paws and wasn't going to be running any time soon.
Seeing how desperate things had become, the newly-hatched Dratini wrapped herself around Josh's arm and started pulling on it.

"Wha...?" Josh stirred, his eyes opening to a Dratini staring him in the face and Gyarados drool dripping from the back of his head. Turning to see the hulking serpent, his first instinct was to throw his last Quick Ball at it.

The enormous sea serpent disappeared into Josh's emergency Quick Ball and came to rest. Though it was the last one in his supply, it likely ended up saving his life. Gyarados were a bit too wild and tempermental for him - his first thought was this would be a catch-and-release. He would come to that decision in the morning.
Now that Josh was wide awake, the newly-hatched Dratini wrapped herself around Twilight's back and tried, in vain, to pull the sleeping Absol toward him. This aroused the dark-type, who was quick to start bucking and kicking to force the Dratini off, and very easily at that. The young one was very quick to float back toward Josh, gently coiling around his left arm, stretching behind Josh, and lowering her upside-down head in the center of her trainer's vision. "Thank you...Resheph." The Dratini smiled at her name - it was after a mythical serpent who wielded lightning.
By now, the sun had begun to crest...and he was still tired. Tomorrow was going to be a completely wasted day. He checked to make sure his Absol was still okay - she was, just a bit winded as well. Understandably so - they had only slept about four hours. "...Let's back to Fuji before this happens again," Josh mumbled. Twilight sat down to let Josh aboard, the two resuming their trip eastward in search of lodging for the day.
