Marley smirked as the last candle lit up. Excellent! Now that this was done, it was time for the real battle to begin. "Alright, let's get this started!" he laughed, pulling out two pokeballs. He had been planning and preparing for this, so let's see how this goes.
"Mino! Melony! Come out out!" he yelled, throwing the pokeballs. In a bright flash of light, there appeared a Lapras and a Mr. Mime, blinking in the dark before preparing themselves for a battle.
[attr="class","momoPBody"]Hmmmm, a Mr. Mime and a Lapras? That was an interesting pair to battle with! Sable’s eyes were more adjusted to darkness, though. Would Marley even be able to see what Pokemon she released? Well, a flash would light in the darkness for a moment! And yellow bands seemed to glow thereafter. An Umbreon had taken shape in the dark. What else was there… was hard to see. If Marley squinted in just the right angle against the fire, he could see the familiar crescent horn of an Absol. “Start us off, won’t you?” Sable called clapping her hands together excitedly.
It was still rather dark in the gym, making it a little difficult to make out just what he was fighting. Thankfully, features that stood out allowed Marley to figure out just what he was going up against. An Umbreon and an Absol. Interesting choices. He thought for a brief moment as to if there was anything about them he would need to worry about.
Well, time to get started.
"Alright, Melony, start out with a Safe Guard! Mino, slug that Umbreon with a Brick Break!" The Lapras let out a low song as a shimmering veil seemed to fall over the pair. Mino cracked his knuckles, before lunging to strike the Umbreon.
And just like that, they were off and running. A glowing light of Safeguard shined, and the Mr. Mime was coming forward with some Fighting type power. Pow! The Umbreon took the damage right to the top of her head, but as her eyes opened again with fierce determination, it was clear she was far from downed. In fact, had she taken perhaps even less damage than one would have expected?
“Iron Tail back, Umbre!” Sable’s voice reverberated from the darknesss. The yellow bands of the Umbreon shined bright before disappearing for a moment into the darkness— In another second, the Umbreon was whipping around in an elegant if hard to see display aiming to return damage for damage against the Mr. Mime.
pXYOFs22p_ Just barely missing, apparently!
“Swords Dance, Abbyl!” Sable went on right after. In the darkness, the wicked dance would not be seen exactly, but the familiar clanking of ‘swords’ echoed out into the area, and the Absol cried out right after ready to do some heavier damage.
{Math for later so I don't have to keep checking} Iron Tail: 75 - 10 = 65% Accuracy 2 HP * 2 (super effective ) = 4 - 1 (Filter) = 3 HP damage normally - 1 HP (+2 Def) = 2 Damage
Marley grinned as Mino's attack hit its mark, scoring a blow right into the Umbreon's head. To make things even better, the Umbreon's counter attack missed as well, with Mino nimbly stepping to the side of the attack. Meanwhile, Marley took note of the Absol preparing its own attack, boosting itself up. So far, a good opening. Marley just needed to keep up the pressure.
"Mino! Keep on it! Another Brick Break!" He looked over at Melony. "Melony, hit that Absol with a Thunder! Light up the place!"
As the Mr. Mime charged at the Umbreon, electricity crackled around the Lapras. Suddenly, a bot of electricity came down from on high, right at the Absol.
“Umbre! Dodge it!” Sable commanded, and though the Brick Break came close to crashing into the Umbreon again, it just barely missed. “Wait for it!” The lightning came down, and the Absol took it in stride. Umbreon winced but waited for Sable's orders. They knew what was coming next, actually. “Absol! Night Slash! Umbre! Assurance!” And then they were working together. The Absol went bounding through the darkness swiping at the with a powered up slash upon the Mr. Mime. The Umbreon followed suit with the strength of confidence! Forming a dark assurance, she slashed it forward right after.
Umbreon: 7.5 [Dodged] Absol: 11 - 3 = 8 HP
Absol +2 ATK cancels +2 DEF: 5Gtgq3HNp_ (>10, HIT, -2 HP) p_ (>88, no crit) Umbreon: p_ (>10 HIT, follows Night Slash: (-4, +2 DEF) = -3 HP p_ (>96, no crit)
So, that was the plan huh? Gang up on the Mr. Mime. Mino braced himself, taking the combined hits of both Absol and Umbreon. Not a bad little tactic. Have the Absol go first, and then follow up with the Assurance. Well, two can play at that game, and Marley knew now who to gun for. "Mino! You alright?" Marley called. The Mr. Mime looked back to him and nodded. Mino was a fighter after all. Marley smirked and cracked his knuckles.
"Ok, Melony, patch up Mino with a Life Dew! Mino, return the favour by slapping that damn Umbreon with another Brick Break!"
Melony let out a small cheer as healing water came off of her, splashing both herself and Mino (though in this case, Melony really didn't need it). Mino charged at the Umbreon, swinging his fist at it.
A giggle escaped into the darkness as the Life Dew was ordered. Two could play at that game, though. In the meantime, though: “Swords Dance, Abs!” she called. The Absol once more shifted around and performed the maneuver that, in the darkness, echoed out like the clanking of metal. Meanwhile, the Umbreon took the second punching and cried out briefly as she crashed to the floor. Sable was ready, though. “Moonlight Umbre!” was the call. In the darkness, a crescent moon seemed to briefly appear, and the Umbreon’s bands shined brightly in response. For as much damage as she had taken, the Umbreon was up and ready to go again.
As the moonlight healed up Umbreon, Marley's eye twitched. Well, of COURSE she would have a heal somewhere. This complicated matters. And Absol was getting stronger as well. While Melony's Life Dew was handy, the dark duo could outdamage Mino's defenses. And that's if they didn't focus fire on the Mr. Mime, which seemed to be the case if the last round was any indication.
Marley glanced over at the Absol. "Ok, change of target! Mino, give that Absol a slug with Brick Break! Melony, restore the Safeguard!" Melony toned as the shimmering shield reappeared, while the Mr. Mime charged at Absol, swinging a mighty fist.
The force of that Mr. Mime’s punch would have been enough on its own had it not punched the Absol square in the face. The latter let out something between a grunt of pain and a deep reverberation of annoyance. She’d taken quite a bit of damage but wasn’t about to let that go unpunished. “Night Slash, Abs! Assurance, Umbre!” Sable called. They were after the Mr. Mime again, it seemed. The Absol slashed her forceful claw forward, and the Umbreon swiped a Dark fused powered up tail.

Marley saw this coming. After all, that seemed to be the strategy between the two of them. Focus fire on one, using the former's attack to power up the latter. "Mino! Dodge it!" The Mr. Mime knew, shifting to the side with surprising fluidity as Absol's Night Slash. However, it didn't protect him from being hit by the Umbreon's Assurance. Though the attack wouldn't be as potent as before. Mino almost smirked at the Umbreon.
"Attaboy Mino! Now, finish that Absol with a Brick Break! Melony, top 'im up with a Life Dew!"
as Melony brought on another dose of healing rain to Mino, the Mr. Mime closed in on the Absol, ready to deliver the finishing blow to the Absol.
Though she received no call from her trainer, the Absol was quick to bow down low avoiding the attack from the punchy Mr. Mime. "Great work, Abb!" Sable cheered as no grunt of pain was given. "Refocus on the Laprs! Use Night Slash again!" The Absol let out a low cry and turned away from the Mime running straight at the healing factor here and swiping down with a Dark energy off of her blade. "Umbre! Refocus on the Lapras too! We can't have it keep healing!" The Umbreon let out a cry and shined with bands of power before following after the Absol with an Assurance.

Melony let out a cry as the Absol's blow hit dead on. Fortunately, the force of the blow caused the Umbreon's attack to miss. A good thing too, though Marley still wasn't happy to see his Lapras injured. "Oi!" he yelled out, clearly irritated. "Mino! Smack that damn Absol! Melony, patch yerself up with a Life Dew!"
Melony nodded, letting loose another sprits of healing rain, while Mino closed in to deal a firm punch to the Absol.
“Dodge it, Abs!” Sable’s voice rang out. Just as the Mr. Mime came at her again, the Absol bowed down out of the way with grace and speed before immediately springing up again. “Umbre! Use Screech! Abs! Use Night Slash!” Sable went on. The Umbreon dropped her maw and released an ear-splitting noise out through the darkness. The Absol’s blade shined bright again as she went in to swipe at the Lapras again.

It was a rather interesting sight, seeing a Lapras rolling along the ground to avoid the Absol's attack. Seemed the little pokemon was more agile than people gave her credit for. The Umbreon's screech caused all present to cover their ears. Even Marley. Who'd have thought an Umbreon could scream so loud?
"Alright, let's end this! Mino, Brick Break on that damn Absol! Melony, hit that Umbreon with a Thunder!"
Mino shook his head to stop his ears from ringing, before cracking his knuckles and diving at Absol to deliver what was hopefully the finishing blow. Meanwhile, Melony let out a cry, bringing forth an arc of lightning down from above, with the intent to slam it down onto Umbreon.
“Brace it, Abs!” Sable’s voice came quickly. As the Mr. Mime’s arm came down, the Absol tensed and took the damage. The sword Pokemon would not fall yet, however. “Great job!” Meanwhile Umbre was expertly dodging the electricity directed towards her, no promoting needed. It helped that Thunder was such a big attack that it made getting out of the way easier. Meanwhile the safeguard had dropped, and Sable had an idea. Abs wasn’t looking to good so instead: “Toxic on Mr. Mime, Abs!” she called. The Absol leapt through the darkness and spat toxins at the Mr. Mime. “Screech again, Umbre!” Once more the Umbreon released a scream in the darkness.

Marley scowled as, even taking the hit, the Absol was still standing. To make things even worse, Mino was now hit by a toxic. These two were REALLY starting to get on his nerves. "Alright, now THIS TIME let's end it! Mino, give that damn Absol another Brick Break!" he glanced at the Umbreon. "Melony, put that Umbreon to sleep with a Sing!"
Melony nodded as the lapras began to sing. Meanwhile, Mino, starting to feel the effects of the poison, charged at Absol, ready to deliver a hard punch.
This time the crushing power of the Fighting move could not be withstood by the Absol. Hitting the ground, he struggled to get up only to collapse right after. A beam of red light reached through the darkness and reclaimed the Pokemon. “Good work, Abs,” Sable’s voice was quiet as she spoke to the Pokemon.
Meanwhile, the Umbreon was just far enough away to be unaffected by the songs of the siren. “Confuse ray, Umbre!” Sable called before throwing out another Pokeball. The Umbreon stepped forward releasing a ray of confusion upon the unprotected Mr. Mime. “Krok! Let’s go!” In a flash of light, a Krokorok came forward. “Use Torment on Mr. Mime!” The Krokorok made a strange gesture with his hands and would cause the Mr. Mime to be unable to use the same move twice.

Well, that was one down! Three more to go. And things weren't going to get any easier as a Krokorok appeared on the field. A dark, Earth type. And here was Melony without a water type move. And then came all the hatred on Mino, with Umbreon blasting Mino with a Confuse Ray, and Krokorok hitting him with a Torment. The poor, poisoned clown as staggering, groaning. "Man, so much hate," Marley muttered. Well, time to make the best of it. "Melony, throw up a Safeguard! Mino, if you can hear me, hit that Umbreon with an Encore!" Melony obliged, calling up the effect stopping shield, while Mino attempted to get another round from Umbreon.

As the Mr. Mime tried and failed to return the attack, Sable winced. No time to feel sympathy, though. As Gym Leader, she had to pose a challenge. “Umbre, Screech again! Krok, use Sand Tomb!” The Umbreon once more released an ear splitting screech out at the other Pokemon. The Krokorok, meanwhile, summoned up some of that Ground type energy and sent it rushing at the Lapras. Maybe because of the previously used Safeguard or some other miscalculation, though, it went just flying passed her.
