Marley took in a deep breath as he stood outside of the doors to the Bass City Gym. This would be the third time he would be stepping in here to challenge Hiro. The memories of his last two encounters, ending with him walking out in humiliation, were still raw in his mind. Not this time. This time, Marley was fighting it straight to the end. He glanced at the three pokemon he had chosen for this fight. With luck, these three would be able to get the job done.
Expecting mockery and a really hard challenge, Marley pushed open the doors and stepped inside, looking around to see if there was any sign of the gym leader, or his daughter.

"So, up for another round huh?" Came an all too familiar voice. Hiro, leader of the Bass City Gym. The scientist had a jovial smile on his face. "Well, they do say third time's the charm. Let's hope things go better for you this time. Come on."
Well, that was better than what Marley expected. The pair of them approached the large pool, where the battle would commence. "Same as before. You start first." Marley nodded, reaching for a pokeball. He already had his first pokemon in mind.
"Come on out Reefer!" Marley yelled, throwing the pokeball. In a bright flash of light, the ghostly Corsela appeared on the field. Hiro blinked. "Wait, is that..." "A Galarian Corsela, yes." Marley finished. A look of pity appeared on Hiro's face. "Can't help but feel bad for the poor thing. What do you guys do to them over there?" Marley knew he was just concerned about the pokemon, but hearing him slighting his homeland, even midly, caused his eye to twich. "Just send out ya pokemon will ya?" Hiro nodded, selecting a pokeball. "Come on out Alomomola!"
With a bright flash, the healing fish pokemon appeared, landing in the water while Reefer sat on one of the small islands. "Almomola!" Hiro announced, "Start yourself off with an Aqua Ring!" Marley knew just what sort of move that was. So, setting himself up to heal early on huh? "Not so fast! Reefer, Astonish!" Reefer nodded, suddenly letting out a ghostly wail. Whether it was the yell itself, or the sight of an aquatic ghost, the Alomomola let out a small yelp, flinching and stopping himself before his Aqua Ring could finish. Hiro gave a small huff. So, it was going to be like that huh? "Alomomola! Let's go on the offensive shall we? Water Pulse!"
Shaking off the small wave of fear, the fish pokemon nodded, suddenly firing a blast of water, hitting the corsela head on and sending him flying back into the water. "Reefer!" Marley called out, watching the ghost rising up from the water, eyes spiralling in confusion. Dammit, trust his luck for that to hit! Hiro smirked. "There we go, that's what I'm talking about! Alomomola! Water Pulse again! The Alomomola prepared another shot. "Reefer! Endure!" Marley yelled out, hoping the Corsela could hear him. The attack fire, hitting the Corsela with a splash.
Water sprayed everywhere as Marley waited to see just what would happen. Had he snapped out of it in time? Suddenly, there was a ghostly wail, and a shot of dark energy fired out of the water, hitting the surprised Alomomola. A hex. Marley grinned. Excellent, he had survived.
Hiro was a little surprised by that, but at the same time, glad the fight hadn't ended so soon. "Quick Alomomola, get an Aqua Ring ready!" "Reefer! Astonish!" As the water pokemon formed the ring of water around him, Reefer burst out of the water in front of him, letting loose another ghostly wail. The Alomomola reeled from the hit, but was able to get the aquatic ring out. Well, at least Marley got a hit on him.
"Alomomola, try to finish this! Water Pulse!" The Alomomola took in a sharp breath, before firing another blast of water right at the Corsella. Much to Hiro's surprise, the water pokemon rolled to the side quite nimbly, the attack going wide. Marley smirked. "Weak Armor mate. When Reefer here takes a hit, his defense drops, but his speed picks up. Reefer! Hex!"
With the newfound burst of speed, Reefer fired off a powerful blast of dark energy at the Alomomola. The water pokemon's Aqua ring tried to absorb some of the damage, but it was too little, too late. Alomomola let out a cry as he was knocked back into the water, before floating limply on the surface.
Marley let out a crow, pumping his first. "Great job Reefer!" he cheered. the Corsela gave a small cheer. He had been battered around, but he could still keep going, provided he didn't take anymore hits like that.

One down, two more to go. Marley and Reefer both braced themselves as, in a flash of light, Hiro's second pokemon appeared. A Lanturn. Alomomolas were a more defensive pokemon, this one would be different. "Get ready Reefer," Marley said, the Corsela nodding. Hiro gave a smirk. "Alright, let's do this! Lanturn, hit him with a Thunder Wave!" Electricity crackled around Lantern, before a burst of it fired towards Reefer. "Reefer! Dodge it!" Marley yelled out. The Corsela made to move, but one of his legs slipped , causing him to stumble. The electricity struck Reefer head on, sending a painful current through his ghostly body.
"Reefer!" Marley cried out, as Reefer's body locked up. Hiro gave a small snap of his fingers. "Nailed it! Lanturn, hit him with a Discharge!" Lanturn began to charge up, getting ready for a blast. "Reefer! Astonish!" Marley yelled out. Reefer got ready to let out a wail, but his body suddenly locked up, stopping him from moving. Lanturn, unopposed fired off a blast straight at Reefer. The attack hit dead on target. Reefer let out one last cry before sagging to the floor, beaten.
Marley gave a small sigh, recalling the Corsela. "You did good mate," Marley said, tucking the pokeball back into his jacket, "Take a rest." Now the score was one for one. He reached down to pluck out another pokeball. "Ok, we've got a fight ahead of us. Come on out Creamsickle!" Marley threw the ball, calling forth the Eiscue.

Reefer has fainted. Bringing out Creamsickle the Eiscue
As Creamsickle appeared on the field, the Lanturn looked ready to keep up the fight. Creamsickle looked around, trying to take in where he was, and Hiro was more than ready to take advantage of the opening. "Lanturn! Hit it with a Confuse Ray!" The lanturn's glowing antenae started to sway, strange ripples of energy coming off of it and heading right for the Eiscue. The ice pokemon barely had time to react before the attack hit, causing the small penguin to stumble around, confused. "Oh you've got to be kidding me!" Marley yelled out. First paralysis, and then this? Hiro couldn't help but laugh. "Sorry about that. Talk about terrible luck there."
As the poor Eiscue stumbled around, the Lanturn slowly approached him. With everything going on, he really couldn't help but feel a little bad for the poor pokemon. Well, best to get this over quickly.
CRACK!
Hiro and Marley watched wide eyed as suddenly Creamsickle's head slammed right into the Lanturn, catching him by surprise. The block of ice shattered, revealing the small head of the penguin pokemon. As Lanturn reeled back, Creamsickle blinked a couple of times and looked around, unsure what just happened. Marley couldn't help but be stunned by that. Did...he intend to do that, or was that just an accident?[/i] Well, whatever it was, it had been a hit on the Lanturn, and now it was Marley's turn to push the advantage. "Creamsickle! Hit em with an Icy Wind!"
The Eiscue nodded, letting out a high pitched cry as suddenly a harsh wind blew over the battlefield. Hiro couldn't help but shiver from the cold. Thankfully, his Lanturn was able to shake it off a little better. Though the cold did seem to make the Lanturn a bit more sluggish. "Lanturn! Thunder Wave! Paralyze him!" Lanturn nodded, quickly recovering and launching another wave of electricity right at Creamsickle. "Creamsickle! Fall back into the water!" The Eiscue did just that, granted rather clumsily as he fell backwards into the water with a splash. The electricity shooting right over his head.
"So, we're taking this into the water huh?" Hiro said with a smirk, "Fine by me! My pokemon work best in the water anyway." "Don't forget Hiro, penguins are good at swimmin' too." Marley smirked. The two pokemon darted about in the water. With Creamsickle's ice face disabled, it made it easier for him to move quickly. Meanwhile, Lanturn had been slowed down by the Icy Wind. "Lanturn! Discharge!" Hiro ordered. "Creamsickle! Weather Ball!" Both attacks collided in the water. The blast sent water flying into the air. "Lanturn! Now! Thunder Wave!"
Unfortunately for Creamsickle, the water made it almost impossible for him to dodge the thunder wave. The penguin groaned, as his muscles began to lock up. "Good job Lanturn! Scald, now!" The blast of hot water sent Creamsickle flying out of the water. Dammit! Marley was NOT going to lose another pokemon like this. As water flew in all directions, an idea occured to him. "Creamsickle! Icy Wind!" Through the pain of paralysis and the burning of the water, Creamsickle let out a shrill cry. The icy wind rushed across the field again, just as Lanturn was coming up. Hiro shuddered. "Y-You d-do know Lanturn's r-resistant to ice, right?" Marley smirked. "Oh, I know. But watch."
Hiro blinked and looked at the Eiscue. His eyes widened when he saw the water around him starting to freeze, forming a block of ice over his head. Marley laughed. "Not bad for a make-shift hail, wouldn't you say?" Hiro had to admit, that was some quick thinking. "Lanturn! Dishcarge! Let's end this!" "Creamsickle! Time to dive!" Now weighed down by the ice, the Eiscue started to fall, straight towards Lanturn. The pokemon fired off a blast of electricity, hitting the Eiscue right in his icy helmet. Pushing through the attack, the Eiscue continued to fall.
Before colliding right with the Lanturn with a loud crack, the ice once again shattering from the force. Lanturn spun in the water before floating limp in the water. Eiscue floated on the surface, twitching and trying to move from the paralysis, but still conscious.
Marley laughed. "Wonderful job Creamsickle! That's two for two!" Though in his current state, he doubted he'd be ready to fight the last pokemon. "Ok, take a break mate, you earned it."
As the Eiscue returned to his pokeball, Marley smiled. "Well now, it's down to this. The final pokemon. LEt's pull this one through! Come on out Tinkerbill!

Recalling Creamsickle and sending out Tinkerbill for the final battle.
Somehow, Marley had seen this one coming. Tinkerbill was a bug type after all, so why not send out a flying type? And yet, it was rather fitting for the final clash between the pair of them. A real uphill battle. "Ok Tinkerbill, let's get this party started! Hit 'em with an Infestation!" The Ribombee nodded and let out a harmonic call. A loud buzzing filled the air as it seemed like a swarm of insects came out of nowhere, instantly swarming towards the bird. "Cramorant! Dive!" Hiro yelled out. The bird snapped out of her surprise and moved to dive, unfortuantely too slow to avoid the stinging insects before hitting the water. Marley and Tinkerbill watched as the water went still, the Cramorant hidden beneath the surface. "Keep an eye out for 'em Tinkerbill," Marley said, keeping his voice low, "That bird show her face, give her a blast, got it?" The Rimbombee nodded, looking around, trying to find any trace of the bird as he hovered over the surface of the water.
Unfortunately, even with insects now wriggling inside of the bird, causing her pain, Cramorant was able to get up underneath Tinkerbill, shooting out of the water in a blast and catching the bug by surprise. Tinkerbill let out a loud yelp as he was sent spinning through the air. The Ribombee spun around to correct himself, still raring to go as Cramorant landed on one of the nearby islands.
And then Marley noticed it. "Erm...Hiro. What is that?"
There appeared to be something in the Cramorant's beak, struggling around. A fish pokemon of some kind. "It's an Arrokuda," Hiro explained, "Whenever Cramorant dives, she gathers up prey in her mouth which she can use as missiles. Figured you'd know that since it's from Galar." "I know what it is," Marley replied, "The question is, why was there an Arrokuda in the pool to begin with?" Hiro paused. That...was actually a good question. "Hiro, you ain't cheatin', are you?" Marley said in a low voice. Hiro's eyes almost bugged out of his skull. "What? No! I'd never cheat!" "Then explain why your Arrokuda was in the pool, during a one on one battle?" Hiro's mind raced a mile a minute. Not that he was actually cheating, just he never expected anyone to bring this up. "Well, normally outside of battles the pokemon tend to swim around here. Guess he was just there from before." Hiro made a mental note to make sure all pokemon were out of the pool before battles in the future. Prevent misunderstandings like this.
Marley's eyebrow rose higher. "You know what I have to say about that?" His face twisted into a smirk, "Draining Kiss!" It was then that Hiro realized Tinkerbill had taken the time to get close to Cramorant and planted a kiss on her head, the bird letting out a surprised squark as her energy was being drained. The reaction caused the Arrokuda to shoot out of her beak, smacking into Tinkerbill in a burst of dust from the bug pokemon.
"Wait, were you just trying to distract me?" Hiro yelled out. Marley chuckled. "A little of Column A, a little of Column B." Hiro let out a small grunt of annoyance, allowing himself to be caught out like that. Cramorant was still flinching from the Infestation. "Cramorant! Pluck!" The Cramorant let out a squark and launched herself towards the Rimbombee. "Tinkerbill! Draining Kiss!" Tinkerbill grunted painfully as the bird crashed into his smaller frame. The Ribombee took the opportunity to plant another kiss on the Cramorant, draining some more of her health and lessening the damage.
Things weren't going so well for Cramorant. That Ribombee had the ability to heal up any damage he took. Meanwhile, thanks to Infestation, Cramorant was taking constant damage. "Cramorant! Stockpile!" The bird nodded, seemingly gulping in the air as energy started to build up inside of her. "Ribombee! Hit her with a Struggle Bug!" Tinkerbill slammed his small frame against the Cramorant, causing her to stagger as she tried to hold in whatever she was holding in her mouth. She seemed to take the attack better than she had before. "Cramorant! Swallow!" He would have had her stockpile one more time, but the damage was starting to rack up, and he couldn't waste time. The bird swallowed her payloud, her body glowing as she healed up somewhat. "Tinkerbill! Draining Kiss, one more time!" Cramorant prepared to jump back, only to pause when pain shot through her body thanks to the Infestation, leaving her fully vulnerable to the Draining Kiss.
It was now or never. Hiro couldn't stall any longer. "Cramorant! Scald!" The Cramorant shook her head before letting out a squark of defiance, before launching a blast of boiling hot water right at Tinkerbill. The attack crashed into the Ribombee, pushing him back, but apart from the pain of the attack, there wasn't much else. Marley smirked."Sorry mate, no burning this one. Tinkerbill! Pollen Puff!"Tinkerbill let out a loud cry of triumph, before launching what appeared to be...a ball of pollen, right at the Cramorant. Right before hitting her in the face, the ball exploded in a burst of pollen. Cramorant, her body ravaged, and spent, let out a cry as she finally gave in and collapsed to the floor.
And then, everything was silent for a moment. It took Marley a brief moment to realize what just happened.
"I...won..."

"Third time's the charm, eh?" Hiro says, congratulating you on your victory. He rounds the pool to shake your hand. When you break contact, you see a small shiny blue badge in your hand.
Marley reached out, shaking the guy's hand. Man, that was one hell of a fight. Feeling something slipped into his palm, he looked down, seeing none other than the gym badge. He had one. He finally had one! A big grin spread across his face. "HELL YEAH!" Marley crowed, pumping his fist into the air. Tinkerbill gave a cheer as well, flying over to hug his trainer. He finally had beaten a gym! His path to becoming a great trainer had truly begun!
