Route 8, a long, rough and arid path that lead straight to Grumble Volcano. This would most definitely be the sort of route that would prove trying. Elizabeth mulled over her choice of teammates highly expecting to run into plenty of ground, rock and fire types. Thus naturally one ought to bring water, grass and ground types.
So along with her usual duo of Tansy and Raya the ranger had Misu, Haldor, Ayden and Trevain accompanying her on this leg of their journey. Liz also made sure to swing by the local pokemart for any needed supplies and plenty of drinking water for all of them. Once satisfied she ventured from Ash City onto the route flying high on Ayden, Raya riding alongside. Tansy, despite her protests, was resigned to her pokeball. As usual Liz had promised a pit stop to allow the venusaur time to roam. But with current events such as they are, the ranger was inclined to travel at a bit quicker pace.
Along with Tansy, Haldor, Misu and Trevain would remain in their pokeballs. Though Haldor could've likely kept pace with Ayden even on the ground, it was just more convenient to carry everyone in the more portable pokeballs. Plus though she did feel much better and hadn't had any head pain since the first initial day of the Ultra Wormhole opening, the ranger was being more cautious with her telepathic connections at the moment least she get overwhelmed again. Like Tansy she fully intended for everybody to get a chance to get out and explore. For now it was just her, Ayden and Raya winging it toward the mountains.

"Hey! You up there!"
A voice called up to the ranger from the path and Ayden turned a tight circle to see who was calling. Elizabeth leaned forward over the charizard's shoulder and gazed down at the hiker. He waved cheerily and tossed a pokeball casually in one hand.
Beside him was a machoke who had her arms crossed over her chest and was carefully watching the trio above them. Liz raised a brow and gave a hesitant wave down to the pair. The hiker beamed and waved his pokeball at her.
"Fancy a battle eh?"
Well he was certainly direct. The ranger looked ahead to the volcano the smirked and nodded as she gestured for Ayden to land. The charizard dropped to the ground and gave the machoke his cheesiest grin. Liz and Raya both rolled their eyes as the ranger slipped off Ayden's back.
"Alright, you're on."
She reached for a pokeball then hesitated and looked to Raya. She gestured toward the hiker and raised a brow. The lucario smirked a little and nodded as she took a step forward and gave a half bow. The hiker grinned then tossed his pokeball revealing a mienfoo.
"Right, let's get Worked Up."
"A'ight Mienfoo, Calm Mind."
Both pokemon began buffing themselves up as they prepared for battle. Raya's power increased across the board while Mienfoo increased his specialized defenses and power. The ranger gave a nod to Raya and as the naturally speedier of the opponents tucked in her head then charged.
"Zen Headbutt it is."
"Watch out Mienfoo, use Quick Guard!"
Before Raya could land her headbutt, the mienfoo threw out his paws and as Raya was about to make contact the mienfoo seamlessly redirected the lucario's trajectory and twisted away from the jackal. Raya stumbled then righted herself after her attack missed. She turned and scowled at the mienfoo who smirked back at her.
"Yea! That's the way to do it, now Force Palm!"
"Looks like it's our turn to deflect."
The ranger pursed her lips as she watched the mienfoo spring to attack. Raya stepped into a fighting stance and watched the mienfoo's movements closely. As he came in for the attack, palm extended, the lucario simply sidesteped the attack having detected where the blow was to land.
Now it was mienfoo's turn to stagger and have to rebalance himself. His and Raya exchanged looks at the mienfoo gritted his teeth as he narrowed his eyes at the lucario. Liz crossed her arms though the hiker just chuckled. Raya raised a brow as she eyed the mienfoo.
"Try another Zen Headbutt."
"Well now looks like they're well matched eh? Al'ight then, Bounce mienfoo!"
He grinned as he gave his next command while mienfoo crouched down to gather the necessary spring force. However Raya had already been moving and surged forward slamming into the mienfoo as her Zen Headbutt made serious contact this time. Mienfoo even flinched from the sudden attack and his Bounce was interrupted.
"Hmm, good hit. Mienfoo! Don't take that, go for another Force Palm."
"Swords Dance."
Raya summoned the power of spectral swords to increase her power further while mienfoo once again raced in and slammed her palm right into the lucario. Raya held her ground taking decent damage from the hit. She grunted as she was thrust backward however there were no effects of paralysis. Raya shook herself and narrowed her eyes as the mienfoo took on a cocky smirk.
"Zen Headbutt once more."
"Perfect do it again!"
Raya and Mienfoo charged one another once more. Raya was a bit quicker and she sped straight into Mienfoo. As luck would have it, the fighter again flinched from the headbutt and his force palm petered out. The hiker frowned then pulled out the mienfoo's pokeball and quickly recalled it. Liz and Raya both looked up as the hiker grinned.
"Mienfoo could use a breather. In the meantime, let's see you handle my Excadrill!"
Cormac tossed out yet another pokeball and revealed Excadrill. The hiker was clever, utilizing the value of Mienfoo's special ability. Now Liz could either keep Raya in the fight and have to face a fresh pokemon or change her out and lose her stat buffs. However, Raya had already refreshed herself with Life Dew regaining back much of her own strength. Looks like the lucario had made the decision for the ranger.
"Don't think that'll save ya. Now Excadrill, Earthquake!"
"Quick Raya, Detect!"
The lucario moved quickly to try and detect the earthquake's impact but she failed to predict the precise point and was sent sprawling backward as the earth beneath her roiled. Raya groaned from the force of the hit and winced as she gradually got to her feet. Liz bit her lip as she looked between the steel ground type back to Raya. The jackal however shook her head and raised her arms to her chest.
"Cross Chop then?"
"Aha! Very nice Excadrill, now power up with Swords Dance!"
The ranger narrowed her eyes they'd have to move quickly and hit hard and fast. While the excadrill summoned the spectral swords, the lucario lunged forward her arms crossed. She barreled down upon the excadrill and unleashed a powerful Cross Chop against the subterrene pokemon. Her powered up state from the earlier fight with Mienfoo, plus the excadrill's own weakness to fighting attacks along with Raya's natural prowess with fighting type moves, not to mention a lucky critical on the Cross Chop managed to completely one shot the excadrill leaving him unconscious on the ground.
The hiker stared with his mouth agap as Raya panted heavily over the fallen excadrill. Even Liz was a little stunned and stared in surprise. The lucario stepped back and dipped her head to the hiker while he recalled the fallen steel and ground type. Liz grinned a little and gave Raya a pat on the shoulder when the jackal returned to her side.
"That was quite impressive."
Raya smirked at her partner then looked back to the hiker. He seemed to be debating his next move then called Mienfoo out once more. The now rejuvenated fighter once again took up a battle pose and stared Raya down. The ranger also debated changing pokemon but she could sense Raya's reluctance to let someone else take down the mienfoo.
"Alright if you insist. Hopefully a couple more Zen Headbutts'll do it."
"Watch out now, Quick Guard!"
As Raya charged up the Zen Headbutt, Mienfoo quickly deflected with Quick Guard again. The lucario frowned as she doubled back with another Zen Headbutt. Mienfoo this time switched to Force Palm and the pair collided with both their attacks. Each was thrown back and both were looking quite weakened. That, unfortunately, was when the hiker pulled his little trick again and now Machoke took the field.
"Are you freakin' kidding me."
The ranger grumbled as the mienfoo once more vanished from sight. Raya was looking pretty worn out and even though the ranger could feel her protests she called her back to her side. Grumpily the lucario stepped off the field and stood by Liz's side. The young woman looked to Ayden and nodded though she was a little uncertain about the fire lizard fighting the female.
Ayden was over the moon as he stretched out his wings and lifted up just enough to fly over and land in front of the machoke. He gave her a wink and thumbs up as he attempted to turn on the charm. Cormac's machoke however did not look impressed. The ranger sighed and shook her head.
"Hey now pay attention, and here."
Liz tossed the charizard a pinap berry and the overgrown lizard caught it in his mouth and happily munched away. He gave Machoke another toothy grin though now bits of berry were stuck between his teeth. She just stared at him slightly horrified as Cormac laughed behind her.
"Hope your fire breather can fight better than he flirts!"
This caused Ayden to scowl but lower his head looking dejected. The ranger scoffed at te hiker but smiled at Ayden when he turned to look back at her uncertain. She winked at him and Raya gave the classic throat slash movement effectively telling him to take her down.
"Ignore him Ayden, you're a fine catch for any lady. Now let's show them what you've got."
"Let's get pumped Machoke!"
Once more both pokemon buffed up to increase their relative power and defenses. After working himself up, Ayden took to the skies and circled the field. The charizard was obviously quicker than the machoke so Cormac was simply waiting for him to make the first move.
"Go ahead and hit her with a Smokescreen."
"Bulk Up once more Machoke!"
Ayden released a plume of black smoke which engulfed the machoke who once more bulked up to increase her power. This went a couple more rounds, Machoke bulking up while Ayden poured on the smokescreen. After a couple rounds Liz felt the machoke was sufficiently blinded. Machoke of course would hit quite hard if she managed to hit and her defenses where quite high. Ayden of course wasn't going for the physical defense but rather the specialized defenses.
"Now, Air Slash until she's down."
"Here he comes, beat him into Submission!"
Ayden circled overhead once more and whipped a powerful slash of air down toward Machoke. As he got close she reached up and grabbed hold of his tail then twisted him around and threw him to the ground. Ayden grunted from the fall though took only a mild amount of damage from the attack. He leaped back into the air when the ranger raised a hand.
"Go ahead and Work Up again before using another Air Slash."
"Keep it up with Submission Machoke!"
The charizard quickly worked himself up again before being grabbed once more by the machoke. Ayden went flying once more now starting to feel the affects of the fighter's attack. He however quickly retaliated with an even more powerful Air Slash this one causing the machoke to flinch and be unable to retaliate. Submission it seemed was the hiker's only play what with it being strongest attack in the machoke's arsenal.
"Hey Machoke, Bulk it Up again!"
"Might as well get in another Work Up then."
Both pokemon paused in their assaults to increase their power once more. Immediately when their strength was consolidated the pair went back to blows. However the increase from work up gave Ayden the edge and his final Air Slash landed sharply rendering the machoke unconscious.
The hiker grumbled as he recalled the machoke. This left only a slightly weakened mienfoo on his end. The hiker begrudgingly released the slightly refreshed fighter as he squared off with Ayden. The ranger pursed her lips and looked from Raya to the mienfoo. She knew the lucario would want to finish this herself, however she was still quite weak from their previous bout plus her buffs had faded thus she'd be relying on her base power.
Raya grunted and waved a dismissive hand at Ayden. The charizard gazed at her hesitantly but remained on the field. Liz knew the lucario didn't like backing down, but she also knew she was wise enough to know when to call it quits. However, the ranger watched the hiker carefully for his next move before giving Ayden any commands.
"What your lucario unable to finish this bout?"
Cormac laughed and slapped his knee clearly pleased with himself. Raya narrowed her eyes and Ayden blew smoke through his snout. Though the charizard was a clumbsy flirt, he was also extremely defensive of all the females on his team, whether they wanted him to be or not. Still, he didn't take kindly to anyone daring to belittle Tansy, Raya or any of the others. And especially not Liz.
"Simmer down, he's trying to bait us. Let's wait and see what he's thinking."
Technically the ranger didn't have to wait for the hiker to speak if she wanted. However the telepath did choose not to simply barge into peoples thoughts if she could help it. Her gray eyes leveled on the larger male who grinned as he pointed to mienfoo.
"Alright then, Mienfoo Calm Mind."
It was as Liz expected, he was trying to bolster the mienfoo's defenses against Ayden's Air Slash. She smirked and flicked her gaze to Raya who raised a brow. Instead of calling an attack to Ayden, she reached into her pack and pulled out an iapapa berry. The ranger tossed it to the lucario who readily finished the sour treat with gusto. In moments she was looking refreshed and ready for battle. The ranger smirked as she looked back to Ayden. The hiker had pulled his tricks with mienfoo's ability, so she could as well.
"Whittle him down a little Ayden."
"What are you up to?"
Cormac frowned as he eye Liz and the others with suspicion. The ranger just smirked as Ayden swooped into the air and spiraled about lashing out at the mienfoo with the Air Slash. Though the mienfoo had managed to raise his defenses, Ayden's power was still quite high. The slash of air caught the mienfoo unawares and cut through him before he could react and also forced him to flinch.
"Hey no fair! Mienfoo get in there and hit 'em with Force Palm!"
Liz nodded and in a flurry of movement, Ayden and Raya swapped places. The lucario took the field and knew the attack was incoming. She tried to brace herself but the swapping delayed her response time and she took the blow. However the iapapa berry had given her the edge allowing her to handle the attack with health to spare. Mienfoo was still feeling the brunt of Ayden's attack.
"Well fine, you want to play it that way, watch us take that pesky blue dog down."
Liz felt Ayden's hot breath on her neck as he growled and glared daggers at the hiker. The ranger put a steady hand on his shoulder and shook her head. Raya glanced over her shoulder and nodded to the charizard appreciative of his support but letting him know, she got this.
"Finish it, Swords Dance then straight into a Zen Headbutt."
The ranger knew this left an opening for the mienfoo but Raya could handle one more attack. The spectral swords flashed around her as the mienfoo charged with the expected Force Palm. The lucario did her best to absorb the damage and immediately tucked in her head then slammed it against the mienfoo throwing him backward and to the ground, unconscious.
Hiker Cormac looked stunned but he hung his head in defeat as he recalled the troublesome mienfoo. He approached Liz, cautiously as Ayden was still glaring daggers at him, and extended a hesitant hand to the ranger. Liz grinned and took it giving it a firm shake.
"Good battle. Honestly you just didn't look that strong. Guess it's a good thing we have rangers like you out here to keep order."
Liz blushed a little and bowed her head gratefully. Ayden huffed but Raya gave the charziard a sly smirk. The pair were pretty worn out thus the ranger decided a break was in order. She bid Cormac farewell as the hiker continued on his way. She turned to Ayden and Raya then released Tansy to give the venusaur a bit of a breather while they rested. She also tossed Raya and Ayden both an iapapa berry to help refresh their health and energy.
Battle Summary: Raya the Lucario defeated both Hiker Cormac's Excadrill & Mienfoo, gained 2 levels Ayden the Charizard defeated Hiker Cormac's Machoke, used 1 Pinap Berry, gained 2 levels Used 3 Iapapa Berries

On the ground the ranger noted a discarded net ball. She picked it up then glanced around uncertainly. Had the hiker forgotten it? He was long gone by now but he didn't seem the sort to be carrying around a ball for the purpose of catching water or bug types. She shrugged and stowed it with the rest of her gear. She'd asked him about if it they saw him again.
Tansy stretched and soaked up the sun. It seemed warmer on this route than many others though Elizabeth wondered if that was because of the volcano. Still the poisonous grass type certainly seemed to enjoy it, as did Ayden. Heat didn't quite agree with Raya however but she showed no signs of discomfort, remaining her usual stoic self.
The ranger noted their surroundings, things seemed pretty rough and rocky down here. On a whim she took out her mining gear and picked away at a large rock cropping on the off chance that maybe they'd find something of interest.

Well a shard was something at least. The ranger stowed the piece away and then gave Tansy and apologetic glance. The trio had had a decent rest and were eager to get back on the road, however the venusaur would have to continue on back in her pokeball.
"Sorry Tans, we'll be flying a bit more now."
The poisonous grass type grumbled but nodded as Liz recalled her to her ball. Ayden gave his wings a stretch and the ranger swung back into the fitted saddle as Raya nimbly leaped up behind her. The charizard gave a few powerful wing beats and pulled the three of them back into the air.
"Let's pick up the pace a bit."
She gave a small smirk as Ayden chuffed and shot forward increasing his speed. Raya shook her head at the charizard's childlike enthusiasm. Liz grinned as the wind whipped through her hair and nearly took off her military cap. Flying, in her opinion, was the best feeling ever and she could never get enough. The blasted over the rough terrain beneath them making for the volcano ahead.
You feel a sudden blast of hot air pass over you. Is it coming from the volcano? No, can't be. It was clearly going the other direction. What was it then?

Though the air around them was quite warm from the recent bout of heatwaves plus the natural heat that emanated from Ayden's skin, the strange surge of heat that burst by them was quite obvious. Ayden pulled up short and looked around in surprised while Raya narrowed her eyes and scanned their surroundings with suspicion. The ranger frowned also looking around, trying to sense if there was any unfamiliar presence nearby.
The only thing she picked up on at the moment was a young scout down below that seemed to be inspecting something along the side of the route. Elizabeth wondered if perhaps she'd noticed the strange blast of heat and directed Ayden to circle down to her location. The charizard dropped down, a bit over enthusiastically, and landed heavily a few feet from the young scout startling her.
"Wha?! Hey who are you!?"
The youth called out warily in her surprise while Liz sighed and shook her head as she slid from Ayden's back and gave the fire lizard a skeptical glance.
"Ayden, you could've been a little more careful."
The charizard chuffed but lowered his head apologetically. The ranger couldn't help a chuckle as she turned to face the girl and dipped her own head in greeting.
"Apologies for Ayden's poor landing, we didn't mean to startle you. I'm Ranger Liz and my partners Ayden and Raya."
She gestured from the charizard to the lucario who gave the scout a sharp nod though remained looking stoic with her arms crossed. Liz glanced sideways at her with a raised brow.
"You could relax a little, I doubt the girl could cause us any harm."
"You know she's not what I'm concerned with."
The steel jackal retorted as she gazed skyward once more, her eyes narrowed. Liz sighed as she turned her focus back to the scout who was now staring at them obviously still unsure about their presence. Liz cleared her throat and took a few steps toward the scout as she gestured upward.
"Right then. We just wanted to ask, did you happen to feel that strange wave of heat that went by a few minutes ago?"
Liz inquired of the girl who was still staring at her now rather wide eyed but shook her head in the negative.
"Um, no? But wait, are you a real ranger?!"
Suddenly the girl was alight with enthusiasm. She took in Liz's simplistic attire, making note of the Arciel Ranger patches Elizabeth had had added to her military cap. She wasn't wearing her jacket in this heat but did have her badge clipped to her belt alongside her pokeballs. Liz blinked then nodded with a small grin.
"Ah yes, yes I am. And thank you for the information. I guess we'll leave you to it then."
Elizabeth made to remount the fire lizard when the girl hurried forward waving her hand.
"No wait! Please, would you battle me? I'm Coreen and I really want to be a ranger someday! I'd love the chance to battle one!"
The girl pleaded as she held up a pokeball eagerly. Liz hesitated then looked between Raya and Ayden. She shrugged and nodded with a small smile.
"Well alright Coreen. I guess we have time for a battle."
Coreen let out a little squeal and fist pump as she beamed at Liz.
"Yes! Alright! I've only got the two pokemon but maybe we could have a double battle?"
Liz tilted her head to one side then nodded.
"Alright then. Show us what you've got."
The scout grinned broadly as she tossed out her two partners, a primape and ampharos. The ranger raised a brow, these weren't exactly the sort of pokemon she had expected of the young scout, but you never really could judge someone's taste in pokemon by their appearance.
"Well in that case..."
Liz nodded to Ayden while she retrieved another pokeball and tossed it out onto the field. From it burst forth a great steel snake that towered over the whole group. Really it was hard not to find a steelix impressive, even Liz sometimes found herself caught off guard by his size, and Haldor was only average as far as steelix go. Coreen gaped in surprise at the steel serpent likely not having expected something quite like him.
"Very impressive! But don't think that'll stop us!"
The scout challenged as she grinned and called out her commands.
"Prim! Use Screech on that Steelix! Ross! Use Cotton Guard!"
Elizabeth smirked, then tossed Haldor a belue berry before things really got started. She nodded to her two partners then flicked her gaze back to the young scout.
"Buff up guys, Ayden, Work Up. Haldor, Curse."
Everyone began to move, Ayden puffed out his chest and flex his arms as he worked himself up a boost in power. The primeape glared at Haldor and let out a horrible screech that caused even the ranger to briefly cover her ears. The ampharos bolsted himself with the cotton guard while Haldor laid a curse upon himself. Both trainers appeared confident as their pokemon readied themselves for a real fight.
"Good. Now Prim use Close Combat on that steelix! Ross! Power Gem on Charizard!"
"Keep close guys, you'll have to watch each other's backs. Ayden, strike Primeape with air slash fast then get behind Haldor for cover. Haldor, dig on Amphaross as soon as Ayden's clear."
Now the battle was truly one. Ayden took to the air and twirled sending a powered up air slash down at the primeape. Prim took the hit hard enough that she stalled, flinching from the impact and stopping her close combat in it's tracks. Ayden immediately darted behind Haldor as the amphaross fired off the power gem, hitting Haldor instead of the intended charizard. Haldor brushed off the rock type attack then plunged head first into the ground.
The scout frowned and eyed the ranger warily. She'd noticed the brunette hadn't given any spoken instruction to the pair and it seemed almost as if they were acting of their own accord. Coreen gestured to the charizard as she called out her next attacks.
"Alright then, Prim! Screech on Charizard then Ross use Thunder Punch!"
Liz narrowed her eyes, kid was smart. Haldor wouldn't emerge for some time so Ayden would be unable to use the steelix for cover this time. The ranger considered her options then pursed her lips.
"You've got this Ayden. Go hard and fast at that primeape with another air slash."
The charizard huffed as he circled around and released another air slash of equal power to his first attack, however the primeape unfortunately stood her ground and was unfazed as she released an ear splitting screech. She did look pretty battered now though, hopefully one more hit would finish her. Amphaross was up next and leapt up with a crackling fist of thunder which slammed hard into Ayden. Luckily no paralysis was triggered by the electric attack but the flying fire lizard wasn't feeling too hot after that attack. Then Haldor appeared, surging up through the earth. Ross however was ready for the steel snake and managed to avoid the serpent as he burst through the earth.
Coreen gave a small cheer of glee as the steelix's attack missed completely. Liz frowned, the light pokemon was certainly proving a challenge. She cast an eye over Ayden and Haldor, both were still fit to fight and it looked like the scout's primeape was almost down for the count. She nodded to her pair and gave a small smile.
"Get in there and finish off that primeape Ayden with a final air slash. Haldor, Autotomize."
So long as they could get the primeape out of the equation, the amphaross wouldn't stand much of a chance on his own.
"Alright! Now get in there and get that steelix Prim! Close Combat! Amphaross another Power Gem to finish that Charizard and don't let it hide behind the steelix again!"
Once again Ayden shot forward and a powerful air slash burst forth. Prim tried to avoid the attack but she was just too slow and collapsed as the attack struck her down. Liz gave a small grin and shared a look with Raya. That was one down. Amphaross however wasn't going to take this lying down. He released the power gem again determined to hit his target. But Ayden was still quicker and darted around Haldor, causing the amphaross to actually miss completely. Haldor shifted his weight, the steel plated boulders that made of his body shed their excess weight and the steel snake now felt lighter and quicker.
"Oh no! Prim! Ugh! Don't let them get away with that Ross! Bombard that charizard with Power Gem!"
Coreen ordered with a slightly frustrated tone. The ranger could tell the girl was aiming to at least take Ayden down even if she was out numbered now.
"Alright, hit him with everything you've got, Ayden Flamethrower. Haldor, dig once more!"
The charizard doubled back and poured burning flames over the electric type who retaliated with a vengeful power gem. This round Ayden was unable to avoid the incoming beam of light and was struck full on. The charizard groaned as the intense attack hit hard. He faltered then tumbled down to the ground landing unconscious alongside Haldor. Liz grit her teeth hating to see the fire type take such a fall. However he'd gotten the first bit of damage in on the ampharos, now it was up to Haldor to wrap this up. The steelix once more dug down into the earth.
"Whoo! Nicely done Ross! Now get ready and get your cotton guard up!"
"Good effort Ayden, rest easy for now buddy."
The ranger stated softly as she recalled the charizard to his ball. She groaned a little as the scout bolstered the ampharos further. She watched the hole Haldor had disappeared into and chewed her lip. By her guess, all amphaross could do now was keep using Power Gem which was practically useless against the steel snake. But with his beefed up defenses all of Haldor's attacks would be greatly diminished against the light pokemon. The ranger shook her head and pursed her lips, things would likely drag on a bit now.
Ampharos beefed his defense up once more, negating large amounts of damage. Haldor burst up from the ground but once again his aim was off and the ampharos was able to avoid the attack. Liz gave a stifled though exasperated sigh as Haldor roared in frustration. Coreen seemed surprised but pleased at the steel snake's miss. Liz raised the steelix's pokeball and gave Coreen an inquisitive glance.
"So Coreen, I believe we've both done rather well this fight but I think we're rather evenly matched. If you wish we can continue the battle but I'd call this a draw."
The ranger offered not wanting to drag this out too long. Coreen frowned a little, she didn't like the idea of quitting but looking from Ross to the steelix she too expected this battle to take far longer than she'd planned. She nodded and raised Ross's ball as well.
"Okay, you did manage to take down Prim rather easily."
The scout smirked as Liz gave a small chuckled and nodded.
"As you did Ayden. Have a means of reviving her?"
The ranger inquired but Coreen nodded and waved to Liz.
"Oh yea we'll be fine. Thanks for the battle, it was quite informative. We'd better get going now though."
Elizabeth nodded and returned the wave as she watched the scout continue on down the route in the opposite direction. The ranger looked up to Haldor and smirked.
"Good job buddy, think we'll finish the rest of this trip with you."
The steel snake nodded and lowered his head to the ground allowing Liz and Raya to climb aboard. Ayden would be disappointed not to continue the trip but he needed his rest. The ranger directed Haldor onward toward the volcano and Fuji Town.
Ayden the Charizard defeated Primeape, gained 1 level Haldor the Steelix, gained 1 level for battle participation, 3 levels for Belue Berry -1 Belue Berry

The group continued on their way as they and the scout parted ways. Not too far down the way Haldor felt something crunch beneath his steel. The steelix slowed and turned to lower his head so Liz could better see what they'd run over. Funnily enough it was yet more pokeballs, Great Balls specifically this time.
Elizabeth reached out with her mind and called the balls up toward her. She plucked them from the air when they were within arms reach then tucked them away in her pack. The ranger wondered who would be careless enough to leave such items behind but she supposed at least they wouldn't go to waste.
Liz took a moment to drink from her canteen, the weather was quite hot and they were quickly approaching the base of the volcano. Though the ranger's primary destination was Fuji town they pretty much would have to travel under the shadow of Grumble Volcano. She absently patted Ayden's pokeball, the charizard would be disappointed to be missing out on passing the volcano but he'd likely get plenty of time to fly around it while they were in Fuji.
"Shouldn't be too much farther now. Best keep our guard up."
The stoic lucario directed the thought at Liz who smirked a little and nodded. She wasn't surprised to sense a bit of trepidation from both the steel types. Fire and steel didn't exactly mix after all and the pair weren't entirely thrilled to be out here. Liz debated releasing Tansy to travel alongside them. While the grass type wouldn't fare any better in this climate she knew the venusaur's claustrophobia trumped any sort of discomfort she'd have in the volcano's wake.
Thus the ranger tossed the venusaur's pokeball into the air allowing her to materialize on the ground alongside Haldor. The steelix grunted in greeting to Tansy who bobbed her head and gave a soft 'saur'. She shook out her bloom and took in a deep breath, the ranger immediately picking up on her relief at being outside once more.
"Sorry about the wait Tans. Stay close though we're going into volcano territory."
Tansy glanced up at Liz and dipped her head in understanding. She knew the drill, it wasn't like she was a stranger to this sort of climate and terrain. Liz patted Haldor on the head and the steelix surged forward moving at a steady and comfortable pace with Tansy trotting alongside and Raya keeping a watchful eye on the horizon.

Haldor sped along at a good clip with Tansy sort of loping beside yet behind him. The venusaur paused when she noticed a sparse tree along the path. The poisonous grass type reached out a vine and plucked a bright pink apricorn from the tree's branches. Happily she hurried to catch up with the great steel snake with her find.
Liz looked back to see what had become of the living flower and had Haldor ease his speed to allow her to catch up. Tansy raised her vine up to the ranger and dropped the apricorn in the young woman's lap. Liz blinked and chuckled as she tucked the apricorn away.
"Well, not a bad find Tans. Keep your eyes out for anything else interesting alright?"
The ranger winked at the venusaur as she gave Haldor a pat and the steelix resumed his pace. Raya leaned around the side of the steel serpent to better keep an eye on the path ahead and especially on the volcano they were rapidly approaching. Ahead she noticed a fork in the road and pointed it out to Liz.
"Ah right, I'm pretty sure Fuji Town is that way so, keep to the right now Haldor."
Liz pointed in the direction of Fuji Town and held tight as Haldor veered in that direction. They could make out the town ahead, surrounded by sprawling farmland, not unlike Cherry Town where her own farm was located. Soon they ought to be within reach of the town itself.

On the outskirts of town the ranger spotted a rockruff casually lying beneath the shade of a nearby shade. The canine looked content with his tongue lolling and seemed to enjoy watching travelers pass by on the road. Liz grinned a little to herself, she'd come across the rock canine's evolved form once before but had been unsuccessful in managing to capture them. This time however, maybe things would be different.
"Ease up her Haldor."
The steel serpent slowed to a halt and lowered his head to the ground so the ranger could easily hop off. Raya followed suit and Tansy drew up alongside Liz. She gave Haldor a pat then recalled the great snake to his pokeball, not wanting his presence to intimidate the rockruff any.
"Wait for me by the entrance you two, I don't believe a battle will be necessary with this one."
She instructed the lucario and venusaur. Raya narrowed her eyes and set her jaw, of course she didn't like putting any such distance between them though she did as asked and went to wait by the town's main road. Tansy grunted and gave a disappointed sight. The venusaur simply wanted to met the rockruff and make a new friend, though she too joined the lucario and watched eagerly to see if Liz would succeed in securing them a new friend.
Slowly the ranger approached the rockruff and closed her eyes reaching out with her other senses to pick up on the canine's emotional state of mind. He seemed quite calm and unconcerned which was likely a good thing. At least he shouldn't be overly aggressive.
"Hello there Rockruff."
The ranger let her thoughts brush against the canine gently so as to not startle him. She'd approached him from the side but still within his line of sight and didn't make eye contact not wanting to appear as a threat. The rockruff eyed her uncertainly but didn't move from his spot just yet.
"I'm Liz. Are you out here all alone?"
She inquired as she stopped a few feet from him then crouched down and tilted her head to one side as she watched him. The rockruff imitated her with his own head tilt then blinked and nodded slowly in response to her query. Liz gave him a soft smile then looked toward the road.
"Looks like you're enjoying people watching. Are there really that many travelers that come this way?"
She wondered and watched for the canine's response. He shook his head then yawned, nope it was really pretty dull here, mostly just farmers, were the main thought she picked up from his mind. She chuckled and looked him over.
"That does seem dull, though I do enjoy farming myself. You seem quite strong for your kind but you've not evolved yet. Any particular reason why?"
The rocky canine turned and met her gaze then slowly blinked his deep blue eyes. The rockruff considered her question a moment then nosed the ground and shrugged, seeming unsure himself. It didn't seem to be a conscious choice to not evolve on his part it just hadn't happened yet.
"Well if you wanted, I could maybe help with that? See my partners there? That's Raya and Tansy. I helped both of them evolve from their previous stages. Would that be of any interest to you?
She asked curiously wondering if that was perhaps a way in with the rockruff. He considered her a moment, his bright eyes steady. Slowly he nodded again, yea evolving could be of use to him. Rockruff got to his feet then stretched and took a few steps toward Liz looking more interested in her now.
The ranger grinned in response and reached into her pocket to retrieve a pamtre and durin berry. She extended a hand and offered them to the rockruff, who moved a bit closer to give the two berries a wary sniff.
"In that case, if you'd like you could come with us and I'll help you evolve. Plus, if you like berries like these, we've plenty of those. That's what I grow mostly on my own farm."
She informed him as she laid the berries on the ground and let him nibble on them testing their flavor. Rockruff's tail began to wag as he greedily consumed the berries then looked up at her with his muzzle covered in berry juice. Liz covered her mouth to stifle a giggle then offered her hand for him to sniff. Rockruff leaned in cautiously then gave her a small lick with his berry covered tongue leaving a bit of drool on her hand.
"Oh erm, thanks. So, if you're agreed just nose this ball here alright?"
Liz pulled out a blue great ball and held it out toward Rockruff to see if he would respond favorably and take her up on the offer.

The rockruff wagged his tail faster and tapped the great ball with his nose. His tongue lolled as he was sucked inside and the ball briefly wiggled a few moments before emitting a soft ping of confirmation. The catch had been successful and a new friend had joined their team. The ranger stood and grinned as she turned and held the ball toward Raya and Tansy.
"Alright, we got ourselves a rockruff."
She informed them just before the ball vanished into the digital ether. Liz stretched and rejoined the lucario and venusaur. Tansy bobbed her head happily, always glad to have a new addition to the team and Raya smirked a little as she gave Liz an approving nod. Liz rubbed her hands together then motioned toward Fuji.
"Well let's head on to the pokemon center and get Ayden fixed up then get us some supper."
The ranger suggested then lead the group onward into the town limits. From here they'd be able to hit route 9 later and head for Cork Town and eventually they might even explore the volcano.
