The cold autumn rain had started to come down in droves the moment the sun came up, much to Senara's dismay. She didn't mind the rain from the comfortable dryness of her apartment, nor from the mouth of a cave during digs, but when out on the routes with no buildings or caverns to duck into it was a nightmare. Worse still, route six wasn't exactly lined with trees--it was meadows and hills, so there was not a lot of cover from nature to be found out here. At the risk of getting utterly soaked she'd dug into her purse and snapped up a bright blue bejeweled (normal) pokeball and pointed it up, calling:
"Crepe, I need a wing to hide under!"
A flash of white light cracked the ball in two, and from it an absolutely enormous Mantine took shape. Levitating a foot or two above her whilst suspended in an "orb" of water, he was a great defense against the rain. Crepe blinked his eyes and looked down at his master, who had immediately ducked under one of his utterly enormous wing-like fins.
Senara smiled sheepishly up at him, holding her coat tightly shut, as she was already a little wet and the morning air was doing her no favors. "Sorry, sorry, Crepe! But I forgot my umbrella back in the apartment! Can you stay out with me til it passes, and we can set up camp?" The easily flustered Mantine let out a low, gentle coo, and the find over her head curved in slightly to better shield Senara from the wind. She sighed in relief. "Thank you, darling...ugh, this is what I get for not checking the forecast for the week."
Not accustomed to travelling in the day, Baby Girl was back in her ball asleep, and the little punk Polochon was still not healed from her encounter with him. The two little eggs she'd gotten back in Pine, too, were in her bag side-by-side, wrapped in an individual soft towel to keep them from clinking against each other and from the elements. At least all of them were dry. And Crepe was a Water type, he'd enjoy the rain just fine, right?
She continued to walk along with her very, very strange umbrella floating above her.
@a Mod! WC: 386 Getting these eggs hatched and some rainy fun for Crepe! This is a Haiku.

A few late-season flowers bloomed in the meadows around them as Senara and Crepe continued down the route, rain bouncing harmlessly off his fins or melding into the water sphere around him. The plants were drinking up the rain before it became too cold and turned to snow--similarly, a Sunkern was out doing the same. They didn't move very much so she was honestly surprised she'd even spotted it. Cute. But Sunkern evolved into Sunflora, and, while also cute, those weren't particularly strong. They also needed a lot of sun and rain, two things she tended to avoid with her nocturnal, indoor-or-underground lifestyle. She's feel guilty condemning it to a cold dark life in her party.
So she continued on, now and then sniffling from the chilly air and the slight dampness of her coat and hair. Ugh. A fire type would be nice right now. Stupid Litwick, refusing to join her and being a royal pain in the ass. She could find better than it, anyway. And had, if Polochon and Crepe were anything to go by! Ha! Take that, you haughty candle!
"Achoo!"
Senara pulled a pink-plaid patterned tissue packet from her purse to catch her nose, then used a few clean ones to better dry herself off.
@a Mod! WC: 215 Sunkerns are adorable. But not very fast or strong. Plus their face are derp.
Senara slowed down, raising a hand to touch Crepe's underside to get him to halt--the action made him squirm a little in surprise, which was cute, but right now she wasn't paying attention to him. Not too far down the route she'd heard the bushes by the sides of the meadow rustle, and saw red eyes glinting out from behind the leafs. Even in the very early morning a lot of nocturnal Pokemon might still be poking around. It could be something she wanted. Or it could be something too strong for her to handle...hm. Well, she'd never know by standing here staring at the shrubbery.
She lowered her hand and took a few cautious steps forward, and Crepe appeared to have noticed the disturbance himself. He let out a low, worried sound, like whale's song run through a filter of anxiety. "Shh. It's okay. If it's too much, I'll tag you out, okay?"
Before they got much closer, though, from two more patches of grassy null along the sides of the road hopped a pair of Nidoran, and Senara stopped dead in her tracks. One of them was average size--ever so slightly smaller than Baby Girl--but the other had a head or so's height above them. Both looked quite angry about something, both of them snapping their little rabbit-like teeth at her angrily. Crepe made another moan of panic.
Senara just clapped her hands in front of her, and squeaked.
Nidoran! NIDORAN! They're so adorable! And their evolutionary line needs a moon stone--and it's one of the few who do that aren't Fairy! They're even resistant to them!!
Oh my God, this is PERFECT!
She reached into her bag and pulled out a purple-rhinestone decorated pokeball, still with a wide, delighted grin on her face. "Two versus one isn't fair, ladies! Baby Girl, we need to even the field!" She tossed the ball forward and a beam of white light burst free, taking the shape of her darling Sableye. Baby Girl grinned wide, snapping her teeth in turn at the two Nidoran, whom didn't seem phased by her appearance. Fighting a pair of Poison type was right up her alley. Crepe didn't seem half as thrilled to be in combat.
"Crepe, Supersonic on the right. Petite fille, utilise l'ombre furtivement à gauche!"
Baby Girl sunk down into the shadows at her feet, and the smaller Nidoran looked much less excited about this turn of events as the shadow zoomed in on her. Without enough warning it reach behind her and a pair of long black claws struck it from behind, earning a shriek of panic and pain as it leaped away. The shadow receded back to its original spot and Baby Girl rose out from it once more. Crepe, similarly, blew a high note from his mouth aimed at the Nidoran on the right, and at once it started swaying, dizzied by the pitch of the noise to the point that it couldn't hit straight. Poor thing, being confused was never fun, but she needed it mostly in tact. It was larger, and therefore better.
(It was a lower level but Senara didn't know that. Alas!)
The Nidoran on the left charged forward all the same, trying to drive the little horn on its head into Baby Girl's stomach, only to be caught with its horn in her hand as the damage done wasn't what it had probably wanted. It balked and reared back, trying, instead, to kick the Sableye in the head. It landed both hits...but Baby Girl took no damage and only stepped backwards, smile still impossibly wide and intensely smug.
Senara called in turn: "Plus d'ombre! Prends ça, salope! Crepe, Bubble Beam it, too!"
The dual hits from both Crepe and Baby Girl finished off the smaller Nidoran, and it immediately slunk away, fleeing into the brushes behind it. Senara barked out a laugh, looking down at the remaining Nidoran, and fished out a lovely pokeball from her bag. This one wasn't a average pokeball, no sir. She'd been saving this one for something nice, and this seemed like the perfect chance to try it. Maybe if it worked, she'd make buying these babies her new preferred pokeball of choice...or she'd steal more of them.
She tossed the Luxury ball out, hitting the confused Nidoran square on the head, and in it went with a beam of red light. It was then, and only then, that Senara remembered:
Something else had been in the bushes behind them, wasn't there...?
From the bushes the other Nidoran had slunk into, where she'd glanced red eyes before her attention had been thoroughly distracted, she heard an unmistakably furious roar. Baby Girl flinched and backed up a few steps until she was under Crepe as well, who in turn looked like he was about ready to book it back to Pine by himself if he had to.
Senara swallowed a lump in her throat. Red eyes. A pair of little Nidoran. That roar...
"...oh, merde. J'ai juste énervé maman."
@a Mod! WC: 859 Luxury balls aren't cheap. But it's worth it just this once! Time to fight the boss.

The Nidorina that stepped out of the brushes was...not giant, naturally, because they were usually pretty small to begin with. But it was taller than Polochon and only slightly shorter than Senara was, and that made it pretty frightening despite it not towering over them. And it was furious. Be it the Nidoran's mother or sister or whatever, it was bent over and snorting steam at the trainer in front of it, dragging its hind foot through the dirt. As nice as it would be to try and catch this beast, no way was it going to go down that way. Could her team even take it? It looked super, super strong. She was panicking.
Okay. Baby Girl has a type advantage to poison, and normal and fighting won't hit her, but one attack that's not any of those and she's going to go down. Crepe can be hit by any of that. Polochon...no, Polochon is too weak. Absolutely too weak for this shit.
Her hand, the one now holding the luxury ball she'd just thrown down, tightened around its contents. There was something that might stall the beast long enough for her to get a good railing attack on it. Confuse it, get it to flinch, and then double-team it into the dirt.
But it was under-handed. Really, really under-handed. And it was three-versus-one.
...like I care?
"Reine, let's see what you can do." Senara's smile split across her face and she gently rolled the luxury ball from her fingers to the ground, where it cracked open and a beam of white like took the form of the captured Nidoran. At once the Nidorina went stock still, shocked and conflicted now that it's ally was in its charging path. Reine--the Nidoran--in turn shook its head, still somewhat dizzy, and glanced backwards at its new trainer with a look of contempt. Oof, that was going to smart, but it would go away with time, right?
While it was distracted, Senara spoke: "Ombres, petite fille. Confuse ray, Crepe."
From the shadows behind the Nidorina came a pair of long black claws, and it flinched in surprise as the unexpected attack struck it at once. Paired with the keening, high-pitch of Crepe's voice it was utterly thrown off its war-path, snarling through its confusion. Reine whined and tried to step closer to her friend but Senara put a hand on her head.
"It's okay, dear. I won't be cruel. She'll go back to the other one in one piece!" The Nidoran whined and shook off Senara's touch, but didn't try to go further. The Nidorina snarled and shook its head painfully. "Bubble Beam and Shadow Sneak again."
And so they chipped it down, piece by piece, until the confused, heartbroken Nidorina was too low to continue fighting. Senara withdrew Baby Girl from the field, Crepe still above her to block out the rain, and she stepped forward with Reine at her side, whimpering, to stand over the weakened Nidorina. Her smile had nothing friendly to it.
"Sorry. I would have captured you instead, if I knew you were hiding around. You're lovely. But...I don't need doubles in my party. Don't worry, Reine is in good hands."
@a Mod! WC: 546 Well that wasn't nice. But Senara isn't good. Sorry Nidoran.
Senara Spargo If you didn't add them already, Baby Girl and Crepe each earned 2 levels for the minion battle. They collectively earn an additional 3, divided as you choose (including Reine if you like) for defeating the boss.

"Reine, Baby Girl, return. I don't want you catching a cold out here~"
Senara held out both the newly-filled luxury ball and Baby Girl's decorated pokeball and clicked the button, letting out two beams of red light that absorbed her Pokemon. Before she disappeared, Reine spared one more hateful look at her new trainer. Yeesh. She'd probably be mad for a while about this whole "using you to fight your mom/sister" thing, but...well, nothing time and treats and spoiling her wouldn't solve, right? That was how Senara's parents did it and she turned out...actually, no, forget that. Bad example.
She went to place both the pokeballs back into her purse--
--then went stock still.
Ah?
Looking into her purse, where she had had two eggs wrapped up in blankets among her pokeballs and potions, there were, in fact, no longer eggs. Amid all the chaos of battle and admittedly cruel tactics, the eggs had hatched! In their place among the shells were a Yanma--still very small from just hatching, but it would grow quite well if the size of its antenna were any hint--and an Emolga, who was the tiniest thing she'd ever seen! It couldn't be much larger than a pokeball in itself! Senara placed a hand over her mouth, eyes wide and, honestly, a little wet. Babies! Her babies had hatched, and she hadn't even noticed?! Oh no, did this make her a bad trainer? Should she have been more attentive? God, how did Breeders do this with more than one egg??
The two were all curled up in their blankets, snuggled into one another. She knew she had to put them in the Pokeballs she'd picked out for them soon, but...for now, they were warm and just so, so cute all cuddled together like this, that she closed her purse most of the way, leaving enough for air to get in without it getting cold inside, and carefully tightened the strap so it wouldn't move very much as she walked.
They could sleep until she set up camp.
Well. That isn't what I expected at all for today. Nidorans and babies.
Huh...my luck is strange right now...
...I wonder.
She glanced up at a Dustox as it fluttered by, no doubt seeking shelter from the rain, but she didn't move to fight it or bother it on its way. No, she figured she wanted to do something special with the rest of the morning, since the rain was starting to lighten up and she could rest soon. Instead of her purse she went into the jacket of her coat and pulled out a trio of thin gray sticks and an palm-sized silver burner. She had been saving these for when she was in the caverns again, but it just felt fitting to try one now with how her luck had been. "Crepe, let's set up on the side of the road for a second..."
Senara placed the little burner among the rough terrain of the route, slid one of the sticks of incense inside it, and then withdrew a little pink lighter from her other pocket and clicked it twice to create a flame. She had to cup it to make sure the cold wind didn't blow it out before the stick lit up, and a trail of faintly shimmering smoke went upwards into the open air. The area suddenly smelled faintly of copper and nickle, like metal.
Steel.
"J'espère que quelque chose de bien nous trouve..."
@mods WC: 589 My luck has been good. Time to find a Beldum or something else that's Steel!
Post by Senara Spargo on Nov 14, 2019 23:22:47 GMT
The first Pokemon to come out from the brush to sniff at the incense was a Vaporeon.
...that...was not what I expected.
Senara blinked twice at the sleek, beautiful Vaporeon as it sniffed around the little silver burner and incense stick, looking at quite curiously. It wasn't a bad Pokemon. Vaporeon were pretty strong and had a good amount of health. If she ever needed another water Pokemon aside from Crepe--maybe for Gym battles, if she ever wanted to do Gyms?--then she would be a solid choice. And she didn't need to waste a metaphorical water stone on an Eevee to get it. But she'd been hoping for something a little more...Fairy-repelling. Like an actual Steel type Pokemon. Hence the "Steel" flavored incense.
Actually that figured. Her luck was never so good as to have three "wins" in a row. She should have known this by now. Sighing, Senara reached into her bag and drew out a plain Pokeball; no sense using one of her Luxury balls again for something that wasn't what she wanted. "Crepe, Confuse Ray, then Signal Beam."
The Vaporeon jumped at the sound of Senara's voice cutting through the silence, and turned to hiss defensively at her and her enormous "umbrella". Crepe was not quick enough to get his dizzying voice out first, though. First it fired off a beam of water right at his face. It, shockingly, did not very much to him. He still looked much sadder than he should be for the amount of damage he took. "Ooh, come on you big lug! You're fine! It was a freaking water gun! You're a Water type! Confuse her! Then...ugh, Roost." Senara groaned and reached up--she had to jump--to smack Crepe on the belly.
Crepe listened through his exaggerated whines, and one last whimper turned into a keen at such a pitch that the Vaporeon stepped backwards, whining as well as the world went sideways for her. She tried to get off another attack but only stumbled on her paws, hitting face-first into the rough terrain. Ouch. Senara snickered and tossed out a ball.
"If this works, I'm naming you Malchance."
Above her, Crepe glowed slightly as he used Roost to heal his "wounds".
@mods WC: 378 Used "Confuse" again, since it ups the catching rate. That was not a Steel. D:<

What a dumb creature, a Vaporeon who liked the smell of Steel incense. Hah. She picked up the ball, held it under her dex, and it disappeared in a flurry of white light to be transferred to her PC. "That was a bust. One more, then I'll put it out and we can try to sleep," Senara muttered, at least putting down her back and starting to clear some of the brush from around them. The tiny tent she used was small enough to fit in the side of her purse but, as a result, wasn't especially large for herself. Crepe would need to be back in his ball and she'd either be alone or, well, most likely she would let Baby Girl out to cuddle with her before going to sleep. She could already feel tiredness creeping into her skull and making it pulse. Bleh. She was a nocturnal creature, damn this rain...
@mods WC: 154 Trying one more catch if this one isn't a Steel gonna end the thread.
Post by Senara Spargo on Nov 17, 2019 19:18:39 GMT
Oh. My. God. It's so small!...relatively! Senara squealed into her hands at the sight of a "small" (still twenty feet tall but compared to normal that was still quite short) Steelix come crawling over from the hillside, its magnificent silver coating slick with the rain and shining in the low-lighting of the morning. This was her chance to have a Steelix of her very own! HER VERY OWN! She could hardly contain her excitement. As it grew close she took note of the teeth; two pairs, so it was male, yes? A part of her had hoped for a girl, in case she ever chose to breed an Onix, but no matter. He would be perfect either way. Thrusting out her arm in full swing, Senara shouted without an ounce of restraint:
"BUBBLE BEAM!"
The Steelix turned its monumental head to roar at the announced attack, and Crepe let out a shriek of fear, but through the sound a stream of bubbles blew past his lips and hit the Steelix dead in the face. It growled, the pain definitely doing it not favors, but then its teeth began to glow...Senara's face dropped. Oh no no no no! Thunder Fang?! It knew an Electric attack?! Dammit, she needed something else to fight it. She reached into her purse for a Pokeball frantically trying to figure out what to switch in Crepe's stead.
What is Steel weak to. Fire. Don't have any. Ghost. Is Feint Attack a Ghost type move or Dark type?! Dammit it's Dark! But Shadow Sneak isn't...I can use Baby Girl!
This is going to be close but...!
"Return--" she started, but the Steelix dove in, getting right into Crepe's literal personal bubble and snapping its jaw around one of his enormous wings. Bolts of electricity pulsed over Crepe's squishy flesh and he cried out in pain, smoking ever so slightly as he pulled back. Oh God he looked bad. His health was so low. Another like that and...
She snapped out the ocean-blue decorated Pokeball, and in a beam of red light, Crepe was sucked back into his Pokeball. In her opposite hand she already had Baby Girl's ball read and tossed it out in her Mantine's place. She shook the white light from her and stepped onto the road, looking up--quite a bit up--at her opponent with honest surprise. Compared to it she was an ant. But type-wise, she'd be fine...right??
"Tu as ceci, ma petite fille! Utilisez l'ombre faufiler!"
The Steelix reared itself back, its teeth starting to glow once more, this time with a far cooler light than before. However, Shadow Sneak gave Baby Girl boosted speed, and that was all she needed. She sunk into the shadows at her feet and rushed into Steelix's own shade, causing the wild Pokemon to roar in protest, before a trio of sharp black claws burst from the shadows and dragged up the stones of his spine, earning a cry of pain. Baby Girl reappeared in her starting location with a wide beam. Senara cheered.
"Let's hope this works...!" She spoke in an excited hush, and tossed out the Luxury ball she'd been saving for a real special occasion. Her first Steel type felt appropriate for it.
@mods WC: 548 Finally some Steel! Why are all my sizes weird. This is now a gag.
Post by Senara Spargo on Nov 17, 2019 20:19:04 GMT
One...two...
Oh, son of a bitch!
Senara hissed as the Pokeball snapped wide open and the Steelix materialized in front of them, looking no less pleased with the situation than it had been before. It opened its mouth wide and brought it down around Baby Girl who pulled back with a shriek, but its ice-cold tooth still brushed against her fur. She hissed and held the wound which caused her to flinch, and the Steelix stood back up to his full height, prepping its next attack. Senara frantically went for another Pokeball. If this one didn't work, she'd be...
What would she do if this didn't work? What could she do if she ran out of Pokeballs? Just frantically throw regular ones? Use one of the specialized ones? She wanted this Pokemon so goddamn much! She needed Steel type Pokemon on her party to crush those stupid Fairies where they stood, and she didn't know when she would get the chance at catching another. But if she ran out of Pokeballs...then she would have to go. Give up and run ahead until she was out of the fight, or hope it fled given the chance.
I hate this. I hate this! Come on, come on!!
Baby Girl looked back at her trained with utter confusion as she hadn't called out the next move, but the Steelix had no issues with diving in again, this time with electricity bouncing off its huge teeth once again. Baby Girl yipped in surprise as she jumped away, barely dodging it and giving it a hard Leer in retaliation. Senara looked up with her last Luxury ball in one hand...and a plain pokeball covered in teal stones in the other.
"Alright, if you won't be nice, I won't be fair. Polochon, use Yawn! Make him sleepy!"
A burst of white light appeared besides the Steelix on the side opposite Baby Girl, and a very small Snorlax shook it off, rubbing his eyes. He didn't need to be told twice. He took in a long deep breath and exhaled a long, sloooooow yawn that echoed over the empty road, and the Steelix turned to stare at Polochon...then slowly yawned in return.
Polochon huffed at Senara. Why she had called him out when there was no food to eat he just couldn't understand. So rude. Senara ignored the grumpy little Snorlax.
"Encore un coup, bébé! Ensuite, il va s'endormir!"
Baby Girl nodded and dove into the shadows again. Once more she leaped from behind the Steelix and dragged her claws down his rocky surface, earning another roar and shake that knocked her momentarily to the side. But as the Steelix moved down to bring its teeth to her fur once more...it slowed, eyes drooping, movements getting heavier...
...and fell fast asleep, slamming into the ground hard enough that dust scattered around it. Senara breathed a sigh of relief and Baby Girl scrambled away from the Steelix to her side. Polochon still looked grumpy. "Oh, stop that. I'll give you a snack for this in a bit, just," Senara bounced the Luxury ball once in her hand, "Let me catch us a new friend!"
And she threw it towards the sleeping Steelix.
@mods WC: 540 Why the hell did I forget Polochon has Yawn? Would have saved the roll.
Post by Senara Spargo on Nov 18, 2019 23:59:19 GMT
The Pokeball shook once, twice, three times...four...then clicked, the little yellow light on the button flashing green. Senara's tense, fretful expression split into an enormous grin and she ran up to scoop the ball back into her hands and hold it tightly to her chest. Her first Steel type Pokemon, the first one she'd ever caught! "Je l'ai eu!!" She squealed and spun twice on her heels, ignoring the misty air as it clung to her clothing and skin. Baby Girl snickered behind a paw and Polochon continued to look bored as could be, but damn that Snorlax, she was having a moment here! Senara practically waltzed the ball back to where she'd set to set up camp, ready to slide it into her purse...and paused.
Ah, I have too many...who should I send to the PC?
The thought of sending off the Steelix she'd just captured was ridiculous. She wasn't going to let this pretty thing from her party, not if she could help it. But among her team, she had two infants she wanted to bring to a breeder as soon as possible, Polochon with his catch-aiding Yawn attack, Crepe who badly needed a Pokemon center, and, of course, Baby Girl, whom she would never put into the PC for any other Pokemon ever. There really was only one option. She took out the other luxury ball she'd used today to catch the Nidoran, smirking at it ever so slightly. "Don't worry, Reine, I promise I'll get you high enough level to evolve, just so I can use my moon stone on you. In the mean-time...I think absence will make the heart grow fonder." She held the pokeball under her 'dex and it glowed a brilliant white light, then disappeared from her hand, taking her new Nidoran with it to the PC box. She then tucked Steelix's ball into her purse in its place.
When she raised her head Polochon was standing over her, stumpy arms crossed over his belly, looking cross. Senara sighed and, once again reaching into her back, pulled out a small blue candy wrapped in sparkly paper. Polochon's grumpy face became a smile almost as bright as hers had been a second ago and he swiped the candy up, popped it into him mouth, and hummed with satisfaction. Baby Girl rolled her eyes...or at least she moved her head like she were, it was hard to roll a pair of gemstones.
"Alright, alright, you got your snack. Now help me set up the tent and let's get some sleep, you brat." Senara stood up, unzipping the tiny tent from its carrying pouch and tossing it onto the grass. It needed a little "fluffing" and to click some rods into place but it wouldn't take too long. Polochon shrugged and started to help her whilst Baby Girl meandered back to the bag, staring at the Steelix's pokeball and the two babies inside it.
This started out so awful, but if it hadn't been for this rain, I would have missed a few wonderful catches! Fate works in such a silly way sometimes...I think I'll name him...
"Chanceux," she hummed to herself, "That's a good name for such a lucky find."

Finished up this thread. Got a Steel type finally! Not a bad turn out~
