How would you describe yourself? Silas shifted, already uncomfortable with the interview. He just wanted a fresh start, and didn't want to be asked why. But he supposed the Arciel officials deserved to know who was entering their region, especially since he wasn't a tourist and planned to stay. "I'm Silas Swift, a former Pokémon Trainer in the Galar League. I suppose I'm somewhat well-known there, if only for my distinctive appearance." He certainly wasn't famous, not like his family expected him to be. "I'm a bit reserved in nature, although I do my best to be friendly and not judge others." Reserved towards humans, at least. He got along better with Pokémon. He could feel the interviewer's curiosity at his answer, but thankfully they moved on to the next question. Why are you interested in the class you've chosen? "Being a Trainer was rewarding in many ways, but I found I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought." Not when he got a pounding headache every time he stepped into a Pokémon Stadium. The emotions from thousands of spectators was more of a hindrance in battle than anything else. "I visited lots of small farms on my journey through Galar, and I sometimes gave them a hand with chores and such. It was fun, and I'd like to explore it further." Straightening in his seat, he added, "I know it'll be a lot of hard work, but I love Pokémon and I'm willing to put in the time and effort to work with them to build a successful farm." Approval drifted through his mind, and he sighed in relief. Why are you interested in training in Arciel? Why not another region? Because it was far away from his family as he could get without going to someplace like Alola. "Arciel is similar geographically to Galar in some ways, so I can use some of the farming techniques I picked up on my travels to improve my farm." He shifted, disliking what he was about to say but wanting to be honest. "It's also easier to acquire a farm here than in other regions, so I decided to take advantage of that." The interviewer nodded, accepting his answer, and they continued. What do you consider your best attributes? They can be physical, mental, social, or anything else. Silas grimaced inwardly. Best attributes? According to his family, he didn't have any. "Well...I'm quite fit from my travels, and I know how to handle difficult Pokémon if I need to. And I'm pretty good at cooking," he finished with a faint smile, remembering all the delicious curry he had made for himself and his team while out in the wilds. What do you consider your worst attributes? Be honest, now! This time, he sighed outwardly, hating the question. "Er...it's noted on my application that I have some psychic abilities, right?" At the interviewer's nod, he continued. "Those are my worst attributes. My ability to feel other people's emotions is more hurtful than helpful, and my telekinesis is practically useless." He demonstrated by holding his hand over a pen on the desk between them, barely managing to lift it a few inches before it dropped back to the desk. "Aside from that, I'm just not very good with crowds in general. I prefer to be around Pokémon, which I another reason I'm interested in farming. It's pretty solitary, and that's mainly what I want." What was your childhood like? How was school? "My childhood was fine." His parents and relatives hadn't been too hard on him back then, content to simply wait and see how his powers manifested. "School was normal, although I didn't get along well with most of my classmates. Kids don't take well to learning that someone can tell what they're feeling all the time," he answered softly. "Once teachers explained to them that psychic Pokémon could do something similar, it was alright." He had still ended up with very few friends, but he had gotten used to that. "I played with my younger brother growing up, and helped him with his schoolwork. I left home when I was thirteen to become a Trainer, although I kept up some of my studies while on the road." How is your relationship with your family? "Not great. My brother and I get along alright, but that's it." He parents didn't care much about his empathy powers, since his father's family favored more useful psychic abilities like telekinesis and psychic suggestion over 'useless' ones like empathy. Once they saw how Silas struggled in the gym battles, something he should succeed at because he was a trainer and trainers were good at battling, their disappointment in him wasn't hidden. 'Your younger brother didn't complain about his powers,' they argued when he tried to claim his empathy hindered him in gym battles. It's only a headache, suck it up', 'Stop acting like a child' and 'You come from a long line of master trainers, what are you doing?' were all things routinely said to him. Silas rubbed his forehead at the memories, determined not to get distracted. "Sorry," he mumbled. "I don't like talking about them much." The interviewer assured him it was fine, sadness edging their words, and they moved on. What do you like to do for fun? "I love cooking, Galarian curry especially," he answered, glad to change to subject. "I, uh, may have completed the curry cookbook?" The interviewer smiled at him clearly pleased and amused, and he straightened slightly. "I also like meeting new Pokémon, going hiking and reading about ancient civilizations and Pokémon." It was a bit of an odd mix, but Silas had never really been normal in that sense. "I'm sure I'll discover some new interests here in Arciel once I get settled," he said, earning another smile. What are your feelings on romance? "I've never really thought about it," he said with a shrug. He knew full well that other people often found his empathic powers creepy or weird, and had never opened himself up enough to anyone to consider them in a romantic light. He had figured out that he didn't have a preference for any gender in particular, but that was as far as he had gotten. What are your goals for the future? Short-term and long-term. "Short-term goals would be to get some Pokémon that will help me on my farm and maybe see a bit more of the region. Long-term would be to establish my farm, get a variety of crops established and see what local recipes Arciel has to offer." Maybe make some friends, if he could find some open-minded people he got along with. Perhaps contact his brother, since he thought his sibling might come to Arciel to continue being a Trainer. If you could be a Pokemon, what species or typing would you choose and why? "I'd always thought it would be cool to be a Flying type," Silas said with a smile. "They can go wherever they want, whenever they want, with nothing to hold them back." He had flown on Pokémon in Galar and found the experience exhilarating. He definitely wanted to get a flying Pokémon if only so he could ride on their back from time to time. What do Pokemon mean to you? "Pokémon are friends," he said slowly, thinking it over. "More than that, in some cases. I considered some of my old team family." And oh, how it had hurt to leave them behind, but at least he had found willing Trainers to raise them instead of leaving them with his family. "I look forward to seeing what Pokémon reside in Arciel, and making friends with some of them. They would never replace his old team, but perhaps, in time, some could become a second family to him. Anything else you'd like to tell us about before you go? "I don't think so," Silas replied, leaning back and stretching lightly. He knew some of his answers were a bit short on detail, but he hoped his excitement to see Arciel had shone though. It was a new start for him, one he desperately needed. "Thank you so much for your time," he added, rising and shaking the interviewer's hand. It probably could have gone better, but it could have gone a lot worse as well. |
