Gabe wasn’t exactly running out of cash, but rather he was interested in some hands-on practice stealing. He’d worked on lockpicking for a long while and was fairly confident in his own charismatic nature (plus psychic abilities) to handle and manipulate others into giving him things. But stealing, straight up stealing, was different. He’d sleuthed the Pokemart many times (1, 2, 3, 4 ), but their works tended to be distracted employees who may not have had all that much investment in what they were carrying. It was different for individuals on the streets who didn’t have that layer of abstraction. They could react any which way. And that was why Gabe was out that day to practice.
Yellow eyes flicked around the main street of Plum City. There were dozens of people walking around now that New Year’s had ended and work had resumed. Plenty of targets… But he didn’t want to dive in headfirst and smash his skull. He had to be at least somewhat strategic. On seeing a man seemingly catcalling a woman across the street, Gabe snorted and slowly walked in that direction. Might as well pick the lowly targets first, he supposed. Walking by, he feigned bumping into him lightly and aimed to snatch whatever the man had in his back pocket.

Congratulations! Not only did you manage to pickpocket the man's wallet, but also manage to snag what appears to be a pocketful of precious heirlooms? Who on earth would carry that around in their pockets? Not only that, but their wallet carries several credit cards, at least 500 Pen, and hmm, that particular credit card looks like one of those infamous unlimited ones. What a score! Needless to say, Gabe earns +2 Crime points.
Gabe wouldn’t be sure exactly what he had taken until he had walked around an alleyway corner and roughly disappeared from the man’s potential view. He knew better than to check his loot in sight of anyone or anything. Once he was there, though, Gabe was quick to go through the wallet and other items that were now in his pockets. Cash was snatched, and the credit cards and ID cards were quickly dumped into the dumpster nearby. He wouldn’t take a look at exactly how much cash or what other items he had taken just yet and instead looped around the back alleyway and down several side streets to check.
One hundred, two hundred, three hundred, four hundred…. Five… hundred? Gabe could hardly believe someone was carrying this much cash, but….. hot damn if only all of his targets were exactly like that. Checking over the jewelry he had snatched as well, he found a small box with a diamond ring in it— An engagement ring, maybe? Heh, he could pawn that off pretty quickly. And some kind of emerald bracelet… It had that old timey feel of being from an era before automation or something. He…. kind of wanted to keep that one for whatever reason. Whatever, he had time to think about it now. Pocketing everything, he then tied his hair back into a ponytail at the back of his neck, flipped his jacket inside out and adjusted it, and started out onto the street again looking for another target.
Oh would you look at that rich man walking down the street in such fine clothing? Gabe was quick to walk up and start walking next to him. “Well hello handsome….” he mused playfully leaning up to the man. “What brings you around here?” His hand moved quickly aiming to snatch whatever was in the man’s pockets.
The rich man is clearly flustered with this sudden turn of events and is completely oblivious to Gabe's true intentions. He makes a few flustered excuses and decides to flee battle, leaving Gabe with what looks like a couple boxes of what could very well be some expensive jewelry and of course his wallet that has quite a wad of cash in it along with a few credit cards but nothing else of note.
“Uh, sorry, I’m not into men!” the man had said before darting off down the street, clearly flustered. Gabe had to wonder if perhaps it wasn’t that he wasn’t into men so much as he was closeted about the fact, but either way, he had quite a few things to scavenge through.
And Gabe did just that, in the same exact manner as he had the last. Credit cards could follow him, so he disposed of those. The cash was exponentially more than the previous, and Gabe pocketed that easily. Going to eat well for a while… The jewelry was sifted through a little, but it was… strange. He’d have to find some shady dealer to give him a price on that, exactly. Or I have a certain someone who may like it… Either way.
After checking everything over again and tossing what he didn’t need, Gabe emerged onto the street again. Ah two good heists so far— even if they were small in comparison to what he wanted to try eventually. For now, he’d take the chunk change. Hm, what was next… who could he steal from? His eyes flickered around the street slowly, now, carefully.
There don't seem to be a lot of obvious targets at the moment. Though there is a rather shifty looking guy by the alleyway that seems to be jumping at every sound. Hmmm... wonder what he's up to?
Hm, no other obvious ones… Well, Gabe supposed he could only hope for so much, but his luck had been so good up to that point, heh. Ah well. He’d been about to settle on a regular looking pedestrian when, out of the corner of his eye, he caught a shady person looking out of an alleyway seemingly very very fidgety.
Ah well would you look at that… There were several possibilities: one this was a new thief looking for a target as well and not good at it, two this was someone performing another shady action and hoping to go unnoticed, or three this was someone with anxiety and a potential target all the same.
A small smirk pulled at the corners of Gabe’s lips as he walked over slowly, easily. “Hi there….” he mused softly, playfully, as if nothing at all was wrong. “I was wondering if you had directions for this one hotel I’m looking for…”
Woops! Apparently approaching the jumpy stranger wasn't exactly a good idea. A glint in the corner of your eye shows what appears to be a knife. For now it's just a threat but maybe it would be best to move on...
“….” Gabe stared at the stranger. The stranger stared back at Gabe. There was clearly an unspoken threat here, and Gabe knew better than to call it in public. If they’d been under the cover of night or away from prying eyes around, it would have been different. He would have reacted whether it be acting himself or releasing a Pokeball to have one of his team act on his behalf. Either way, there would have been questions asked and answers given.
Here, though, in the light of day, Gabe just raised both hands up and stepped back slowly. “Don’t worry about it; I’ll ask someone else.” He smiled a little more as he started to walk, never once taking his eyes off the person until he was a safe distance away. And even then, Gabe fished a Pokeball from his person ensuring he could react quickly if need be. Well, he wasn't going to give up just yet. Slowly but surely, Gabe shook off the nerves and started to scope out another potential target.
The stranger relaxes and it looks like there seems to be a wealthier looking man coming out of a jewelry store. Was this person what the stranger was waiting for?
A chingle of sound had Gabe’s eyes flicking sideways, and as a wealthy man with a brown sack in his hand came out of the jewelry store, Gabe felt eyes on himself again— or rather eyes on the man passed him. He didn’t need to look, didn’t need to see, didn’t need to know the exact details. He could feel the predatory sensation. And the last thing he needed was to go after another person’s target.
Gabe walked down the street a little further away from the assured robbery to come. Maybe if he got lucky, his knife-friend would get caught and be blamed for all the other thefts in the area. If not, he was comfortable still. Or so Gabe told himself.
He walked out onto the town square now with a small hum in his throat and a spring in his step. Yellow eyes swept the area still searching for easy targets.
No such luck... it seemed the 'knife friend' decided to lunge for the paper sack before throwing the knife along the ground which comes skidding towards you. The police have been called and you better think fast!
Arceus fucking damn it. Of course, the fool would decide to cause a scene while Gabe was still in the immediate area. Numerous pedestrians were also reacting, some with screams, some with calls, some with instant-messengers. A fight was ensuing, and someone was already dialing the police— actually several persons now as it seemed. The man that had been attacked was holding his own surprisingly well against his attacker now that the other one had been disarmed of the knife he had been carrying.
Gabe chewed the inside of his mouth. He didn’t want to be questioned by the police or recognized at this scene. But there were too many here who would question why he was fleeing in the first place if he moved. The best course of action would be to settle everything before the police arrived and be the hero of the situation, but it could just as well go to hell. It was in that moment that Gabe learned a particular factoid about himself: he locked up under certain types of pressure.
Despite the knife landing almost near your feet, the police read your freeze response as fear rather than guilt. They calmly tell you to back away from the knife and have a nice day with no questions asked! How lucky!
The sounds of alarms rang in Gabe’s ears, and his eyes flashed sideways just in time to see a policeman step out of the car. Shit shit shit sh— His eyes flashed down to the ground and then up to the still struggling men. He hadn’t reacted in time. He just…. Oh… No, the police were separating the two men and handcuffing one of them. They weren’t… even really concerned with him (or anyone in the crowd around) aside from having ushered him to step back and wait around.
Gabe did as he was told and waited, but as many more witnesses were much quicker to come forward and explain what they had seen, he was given a pass to go on with his day. Gabe exhaled slowly, smiled, and waved off as he started down the street again. I need to get out of this area… Too many cops, too many on high alert. This wasn’t a good scene to be stealing in any longer. I could strangle that fool… Oh well. Oh well. It was fine. He just needed to breathe.
Stepping into a store mostly to get out of the cold, Gabe looked around slowly.
The shop seems to be something of an antique shop. There are quite a few baubles and other shiny things that could be stolen and in the fuss it seemed the owner has stepped out! Hmm, might be nice to take a few things before they notice.
Oh, this was a pretty place. Gabe’s eyes darted around from one item to the next. He wouldn’t focus for too long, though, as his eyes were also searching for something else: any sign of observers. There didn’t seem to be a shop keeper, but that didn’t mean there weren’t any security cameras located in strategic places. He didn’t have much to conceal his long hair, and his clothes, while generic, didn’t exactly hide how thin his frame was. The last thing he needed was to be recorded stealing something he didn’t particularly need.
Still, as he came to find, there didn’t seem to be any of that either. My, the shop keeper must have been pretty self-assured to leave all this behind. A small smirk quirked at the corners of Gabe’s lips as he looked back briefly to assure no one was coming before starting to sift through the items with more zeal. He pocketed a few things: a key charm with a particular pendant on it, a shiny rock that he was pretty sure wasn’t worth what the price tag was on it— and then he saw it: a particular little figurine that…. had an Arroian design imprinted on it.
How long had it been since he had seen anything like that? Where had this shop keeper even found it? Had it been imported in? Had it been traded over and over again? Is it a fake… It had to be, hadn’t it? Gabe drew a little closer and stared for a moment in silence. Even if it is… He took in a breath and snatched it immediately turning and heading towards the door. That was enough. That was more than enough.
Wow! What a score! Nobody even tries to stop you as you walk out, seems that distraction outside really helped! Good thing the security cameras malfunction a week ago and the owner has yet to figure that out.
Gabe smirked a little softly to himself as he walked out of the store and down the street. Several different people and now a store heh… Was this practice now or just showing off to an invisible audience? Heh. There better not be an invisible audience… Still, he felt… stronger now than he had been before, a bit more self-assured if nothing else. He could steal from anyone— and more importantly he knew how to handle more types of situations. Rank up? Gabe wondered in his head briefly as if he were trapped in some otherworldly videogame where levels and skill were evaluated and mattered numerically. Hah, that’s dumb…
A soft breath escaped from Gabe as he walked up the street deciding to head back down the way towards Cherry Town. That was enough for now, and he really did want to see just how much he had earned in all of that. More than enough for a good meal and then some… He wanted to eat his weight in waffles somewhere or something, heh. Maybe next time I’ll just steal the waffles…
