Molokai
lvl.5 Charmander Blaze Ability 10/10 health 5/5 energy
"Alright, Molokai! Let's see what you've got!" Fayne shouted, hoping the excitement in her own voice would help inspire and energize her stater the same way it would with dogs. The tiny Charmander leaped off her left shoulder, the flame on the tip of his tail blazing more ferociously as he let out a high-pitched growl. "Nice Growl!" Fayne hollered, encouraging his adorable aggression. "Now use Scratch on that boulder there!" she commanded while extending her right arm and pointing an index finger at a sizable rock that would've dwarfed even an average-sized Charmander. With a snarl, Molokai lowered himself onto all fours and raced forward, covering the distance between Fayne and the rock in the blink of an eye. He skidded to a stop, stood on his hind legs, and began scratching at the hardy surface. Minor abrasions appeared after a few seconds, but they were laughable at best.
"Good work, Molokai!" Fayne shouted, "Dodge it!" In one swift movement, the orange lizard got back onto all fours and jumped to the side, pretending to avoid an incoming attack. "Nice! Now, return!" Fayne called out, but nothing happened. Molokai hesitated and glanced back at his trainer for clearer instructions, obviously unsure what exactly she wanted him do. Without a word, Fayne motioned for him to come back to her. With a large smile spreading out across his face, Molokai rose onto his hind legs and waddled toward his trainer. "That's a good boy," Fayne cooed as she crouched down to pat her starter on the head.
A squeak of joy and approval from Molokai made Fayne laugh, which in turn made him squeak again. Once Fayne had composed herself, she stood up again and said, "Time to get back to work." She pointed a finger at the rock Molokai had used Scratch on and commanded him to use Growl again. He whirled around, facing his target and ready to train some more. The moment he was told what to do, he obeyed, snarling in a cute, disarming way. "Scratch, now!" Molokai raced forward and scratched the rock, adding more unimpressive scratches to the preexisting abrasions. "Watch out!" He leaped out of the way of an invisible counterattack. "Dodge!" He jumped backwards twice, adding distance between him and his rock enemy.
"Ember!" Fayne shouted. On cue, Molokai rose to his hind legs, inhaled a deep breath, and exhaled a gust of red-hot embers. As the tiny, dying flames touched the rock's face, it left behind even smaller black smudges. Some of the embers even caught a patch of dry grass on fire, but it quickly burned itself out. Something about the idea of a bearded-dragon-sized Charmander using an attack like Ember instead of something like Flamethrower really was a fitting image. The mental image of Molokai shooting out a massive fireball five times his own size was funny enough to make Fayne giggle. Molokai heard this, but didn't move; instead, he continued staring down the rock, waiting for his trainer's next command.
The moment Fayne realized her starter was still in the imaginary fight, she snapped back to her sense. "Watch out, Molokai! He's real angry!" Molokai jumped to the side twice. "Scratch!" He raced forward and dug his claws into the rock, actually doing a bit of damage this time. Perhaps the heat from the Ember attack had made the stone's surface softer..? There was only one way to find out. "Good job! Dodge and use Ember!" Molokai jumped to the side of the rock and sprayed out more tiny flames. "Quick, Scratch!" And he did just that, digging his claws into the rock's surface.
"Whoo! You did it, Molokai!" Fayne hollered. The Charmander perked up then, his entire aggressive demeanor melting away the moment he heard the battle was over. He jumped to his feet and waddled over to his trainer for some well-deserved pats. "You were amazing," Fayne praised, "You had that Rock-mon on the run. He didn't even stand a chance against the great and powerful Molokai." She lowered her voice as she spoke his name and flexed her muscles, as if to emphasize how much stronger they'd both gotten as a result of the brief training. Molokai squeaked in amusement and attempted to mirror his trainer's movements, lifts his arms up in the air and bending them awkwardly. Fayne giggled and patted him on the head, "I think you deserve a reward."

Fayne patted Molokai on the head, praising him for his success in beating the invisible opponent and slipping him a piece of jerky from her backpack as an additional reward. Perhaps it was all the noise that the duo were making, or perhaps it was the spicy smell from the jerky that got carried through the wind, or maybe it was a mix of both, but regardless of the exact reason, Fayne and Molokai now had a spectator watching them from upon a nearby rock. A chirpy, almost ape-like sound caught their attention and caused them both to turn and look.
A wild Scraggy has appeared!

There stood a Scraggy, holding its "pants" up and tilting its head in curiosity at the Charmander and girl. Fayne wasn't stupid, she knew Scraggys were fighting and dark Pokemon, two types that were known for being more aggressive than, say, a grass or fairy type. And yet, this one didn't look hostile or dangerous, merely interested in what she and Molokai were doing. "Hey, you want some too?" she asked, holding out a piece of jerky. Apparently he didn't want any, however, for he reacted by huffing and turning his head away in spite. Fayne shrugged and handed the piece over to Molokai, who had been waiting patiently for more. Just as he grabbed the snack, however, he spotted the Scraggy staring at him out of the corner of his eye. The tiny Charmander turned to find the wild Pokemon glaring intensely at him.
Molokai's eyes widened and his tail drooped in fear, but the rest of his body remained stationary. Seeing this, Fayne glanced over at the Scraggy and tried to shoo him away with a swat of her hand, hoping the motion would be enough to startle him. Unfortunately, it didn't even seem like the wild Pokemon had seen her. The Scraggy jumped off the rock he had previously been perched on and walked right over to them, his head held high and proud as he closed the distance. Seeing the two Pokemon side-by-side really emphasized to Fayne how tiny Molokai was. His small stature was something she had commented on the very moment the two first met, but the fact that he was only about a quarter of Scraggy's size really put it in perspective.
Then, without warning, the Scraggy snatched the piece of jerky from Molokai's hands and walked away, feeling victorious. "Hey!" Fayne snapped, causing the wild Pokemon to stop and turn, a smug expression across its round face. "You can't just go around bullying others like that!" The Scraggy made another animalistic noise as it tossed the jerky in its mouth with a single flick of its wrist. Fayne scrunched her nose in annoyance and anger at the sassy Pokemon before she finally took the time to glance back at Molokai. He was holding his tail to his chest for comfort and looking at the Scraggy with fear. In that moment, she realized that the rival Pokemon had used Leer on Molokai, intimidating him and lowering his defenses.
"It's alright, bud," Fayne comforted, and that alone seemed to be enough to snap Molokai back to his senses. "Let's teach this Scraggy a lesson in manners," she muttered, and her starter agreed with a snarl and a nod. Fayne stood to her full height and Molokai got onto all fours, ready to move when he was given an order. Scraggy, noticing the duo's change in behavior, grinned and assumed a wrestler's stance. With one hand still holding up his baggy "pants," he motioned "come-and-get-some" with his other, which filled Molokai with determination and caused the flame on his tail to grow larger as a result.

Molokai
lvl.5 Charmander Blaze Ability 7/10 health 5/5 energy
Fayne and Molokai stared down the Scraggy, both sides waiting for the other to strike first. Slowly, as to not spook the wild Pokemon, Fayne pulled out her Pokedex and scanned their rival. She knew it was Scraggy, but she wanted to know what level it was and what moves it had. Level 7 with three moves. Leer was a status move, used to intimidate their opponent lowering their defenses. Both Fayne and Molokai had witnessed the effects of that firsthand. Payback was a dark move that would hurt badly if Molokai attacked first and wasn't able to get out of the way. Given the 100% accuracy rate, Fayne knew she'd have to be extra careful. The last move, Low Kick, was a fighting type that essentially made the opponent trip and injury themselves. As long as Molokai stayed far enough way, that should've been easy enough to avoid.
With a general understanding of what the Scraggy was capable of, Fayne turned off the Pokedex and slipped it back into her pocket. "We'll want to keep our distance," she said, just loud enough for her starter to hear. "Scratch is out--" Just then, the Scraggy began to move, running straight toward the Charmander opposite the battlefield from him. "Growl and dodge! Don't let it get a hit in!" Fayne commanded, and Molokai did as he was told. He snarled in a high-pitched, adorable way, and Scraggy responded by slowing a little, as if second-guessing whether or not he ought to hit such a tiny creature. Whatever hesitation he felt wasn't enough to prevent him from chasing after Molokai altogether, however. He continued rushing forward, and the tiny-sized Charmander darted in a large semi-circle around the Scraggy.
"Ember!" Fayne shouted, and it was done. Tiny ashen flames scattered across the battlefield between Molokai and Scraggy, some even landing on the jerky-stealing Pokemon and causing him to hoot out in frustration. Fueled by pain and anger, the Scraggy fired off a counterattack and before Fayne even had time to yell "dodge," multiple dark purple beams were shooting out of Scraggy's body and rocketing directly toward Molokai. "Watch out!" Fayne screamed, her voice cracking the instant the lasers landed on her starter. It felt like everything went in slow-motion, and yet everything happened so fast that she had no time to react. She felt like he head was spinning.
Payback. It was a move that did 3 damage instead of 1 simply because Molokai had hit Scraggy first first. The Growl that he'd managed to use before the counterattack had influenced the numbers a little (3 - 0.5 = 2.5 damage), but not enough to make it really count. In the blink of an eye, Molokai had been shot against the rock he had previously wailed on and been pinned against the hard surface by dark tendrils. Only when the attack came to an end did he fall to the ground with a dusty fwump. The Scraggy didn't stop his advances, though. He continued walking straight toward Molokai-- wait, walking. Either that move had taken a lot out of Scraggy or he was giving the tiny Charmander a chance to collect himself.
Fayne's body relaxed when Molokai began to stir, his green eyes narrowed in a hostile glare cast in Scraggy's direction. "You okay, bud?" she hollered, receiving a weak and frail squeak in reply. "Change of strategy. Dodge and Growl, dodge and Growl. Let's get his attack stat as low as we can!" Molokai pushed himself onto all fours and did as he was told. He ran some distance away, turned around, locked eyes with Scraggy, and growled in his not-so-intimidating way. Then he ran farther away and repeated the process over and over again. It took a while, and it was pretty touch-and-go when Scraggy tried to get off a counterattack, but Molokai was alert and on top of it, never staying in one place long enough for the wild Pokemon to get a fix on where he'd be next.
Molokai wouldn't have the stamina to do this much longer, but fortunately for him, the Scraggy appeared to be getting disinterested. Perhaps it was due to their game of cat-and-mouse, or perhaps it was because Molokai's adorable growls were making him lose interest in attacking such adorable prey (Scraggy's attacks have been lowered to 0.5 damage, the minimum possible). Now was the time to strike, Fayne thought. "Molokai, Ember!" The tiny Charmander stopped running, stood his ground, and exhaled a breath of pea-sized flames. Scraggy swatted at the air in an attempt to avoid getting his "pants" caught on fire, but to no avail. Some embers lands on his body, searing his skin even as he continued trying to pat down his body.
"It's distracted! Get in close and use Scratch!" Fayne called out. Unlike every order that had come before, this one made Molokai hesitate. He was undoubtedly questioning his trainer's decision to have him get up-close and personal with the wild Pokemon, especially after she started the confrontation by telling him to keep his distance. Heck, she'd been in the middle of saying they shouldn't use Scratch when Scraggy first attacked! And yet, he wanted to make Fayne proud of him, so he ultimately did as he was told. He raced up to his burnt rival and dug his claws into Scraggy's chest. It was softer and easier to damage than the rock had been. It made sense, but it still came as a bit of a surprise to Molokai all the same.
The Scraggy responded by using Low Kick, knocking the small Charmander's legs out from underneath him and causing him to fall onto all fours. Strangely, however, it barely even hurt! Feeling empowered by how half-hearted Scraggy was attacking and how successful his growls at been, Molokai growled one more time in an attempt to steel himself and simultaneously used Scratch and Ember against Scraggy. It was too much for the dark/fighting type to handle, and he stumbled backwards, snarling and using Payback once more. Molokai shook off the blast and emerged from the dark purple rays with a vengeance. "We've got it on the run!" Fayne shouted, and Molokai knew it. With another series of scratches and embers, the Scraggy fell...
He had been defeated.
"Great job, Molokai!" Fayne called out as she raced forward to praise her starter and to check on the wild Pokemon. Much to her relief, the Scraggy was fine. Battered and bruised, but still conscious. He even appeared to be... smiling? Fayne dismissed this idea and crouched down, bag of jerky in hand. "One for you," she said as she handed a piece to Molokai, "for a job well done." She pulled another piece from the bag. "And one for you," she said while giving it to the Scraggy, "for putting up a good fight." The wild Pokemon laughed and hooted with appreciation as he reached out and eagerly accepted the treat. Whatever he'd said must have been funny because Molokai squeaked and laughed too. As they did, Fayne replayed the battle in her head, critiquing her own training and Molokai's battling. She knew that if the wild Pokemon had used Leer more than he had, Molokai would've had a tougher time winning the fight.
But that must have been the plus side of having a trainer. Normally, a Pokemon was so focused on what was right in front of them that they didn't take the time to strategize. Having a trainer meant having someone who could observe a fight from the outside and make snap judgement calls as a result. Fayne almost felt bad that Scraggy didn't have a trainer to help him hone his skills, but she supposed that was part of the reason why he had been hanging out in the Training Grounds to start with. He must have been looking for someone to spar with so he could've gotten some practice. Stealing Molokai's food was a rude way of getting what he wanted, though, and Fayne was sure to voice her opinion on the matter. "Next time you want to battle or want someone to share their food, don't steal."
The Scraggy closed his eyes and rubbed the back of his head nervously, grumbling something in the animalistic language that only Pokemon could understand. Molokai grumbled something in reply, and Scraggy shot him a play "are you looking for a rematch?" look. "Okay, you two," Fayne interrupted while stuffing the jerky back into her bag. She held out an arm for her starter to jump on to, and he did so eagerly. With a stick of jerky dangling from his mouth, Molokai slithered up the length of her arm and perched himself on her left shoulder. "It was nice to meet you, Scraggy," Fayne said as she rose to her full height, "It was an intense battle. I think we can both learn something from it." The wild Pokemon nodded and made a noise of agreement. "As for you," Fayne went on, turning her attention toward Molokai, "How about we get you to a Pokecenter." With a chirp of confirmation from the tiny Charmander, the two waved goodbye to Scraggy and made left the Training Grounds.
