Set in the original region of Arciel, Legends Rising is a route-inspired, but not strictly route-based, Pokemon roleplay. Pick a faction, pick a class, and strike out into the wild to take on the League, master Contest coordination, research the mysteries of Pokemon and Arciel, and much, much more. Will you be a classic trainer? A criminal? A farmer? Choose your destiny on Legends Rising.
The last time Shalin had passed through Route 1's steep river valley, Mother Nature had taught her the dangers of riding full speed into unknown territory. A vast field would be the place for that, but this side of Arciel featured little such terrain. It was also way warmer, and she didn't like the idea of freezing her face off with the apparent wind Prance at full gallop would create. At least it wasn't actually very windy - just overcast. She wasn't planning on racing this time - she wanted to actually see the sights of the valley. Several biomes intersected here, and she wanted to see them all and uncover sights she would never forget.
The view was no less breathtaking in the shade - she could see for miles. Come to think of it, she had never really looked around the cliffside just north of Birch City - she just blew past it thanks to her Stantler's great jumping power. After a couple minutes of staring into the river valley below, she released both Prance and Flit, the Bug-type happily buzzing circles around the Stantler. Hooves clacking against the dirt-and-gravel road as Prance snorted in Flit's general direction, Shalin crossed her arms, crying "Enough, both of you!" With that, Flit flew ahead, Shalin taking the hint that the Yanma was anxious to leave town. She grabbed the Pokémon's fur and mounted up, trotting down the steep trail and keeping the insect in sight.
As she travelled down the steep trail, she would hear something nearby. The sound of...fighting? Nearby, in a small clearing, a group of pokemon had gathered. Well, five pokemon, an egg and a human. The human in question was standing in the center, having a sparring match with a Mankey. The Mankey was yelling out, throwing strike after strike. The human, meanwhile, was keeping his arms up, trying to block and withstand the blows. And yet, at the same time, there was a big smile on his face.
"Yeah, that's it! Keep it up Brawly!" The Mankey, as if in response to the encouragement, seemed to strike faster and harder, pushing the man backwards. The other pokemon sat around, watching the action. Most notably was a huge Steelix, ready to intervene if need be.
Shalin was at first taken aback upon seeing the Trainer in the distance, sparring with what appeared to be a Mankey, though it was difficult to tell from her current distance. As she and Prance edged closer, the sound of falling rock occasionally breaking the ambiance, she got to thinking. Back in Johto, there was a Gym all about sparring alongside Pokémon to make both oneself and one's team stronger. Every member of the Gym was a renowned martial artist as well as a skilled Trainer. They were often hired out as bodyguards. A bit gruff, but they'd get the job done.
As Prance approached within a couple hundred feet, what she thought was a cliff face surrounding the combatants was the most enormous Steelix Shalin had ever seen! Her mount's clacking of hooves quieted almost immediately as she merely walked closer to the Trainer now, knowing one false move from either could seriously injure them both. Flit had kept going, though, flying straight at the Mankey and Trainer, though a couple feet above them. "No, Flit!" the girl cried, reaching in vain for her insectile partner. Shaking her head, Shalin put both hands back on her mount's neck and gave chase. The battle appeared to be growing in intensity by the moment, one pushing the other back further with every successive blow.
As Marley withstood the onslaught of his partner, a voice shouting out suddenly caused them to pause. Both trainer and pokemon stopped, looking over to see a young woman charging towards them atop a Stantler, while at the same time a Yanma suddenly buzzed overhead. Well, this was certainly interesting. The massive Steelix rose up its head, looking at the flying insect while the Mismagius floated a little overhead as well. Almost as if they were ready in case these newcomers wanted to fight.
Marley, on the other hand, was a bit more relaxed. After all, he had some faith in his team. Watching the woman approached, he glanced at the Yanma, before back to her. "I'm guessing this one's yours?" he said, his voice thick with an accent.
When the titanic Steelix coiled toward Shalin, she and Prance made no effort to hide their uneasiness, hooves nervously clacking against a nearby mostly-buried stone. Who wouldn't be intimidated by a Pokémon that massive? After a few seconds of seeing each other face-to-face, she concluded the metal serpent was, at the least, not hostile. "He is," the green-dressed girl confirmed, Flit returning to her side. "Shalin Nariya, the wildest rider this side of Arciel," she introduced herself. Unable to hold it in any longer, she immediately turned back toward the enormous Steel-type. "If this is how big Pokémon here can grow, then this makes me all the more excited to journey here!"
Shalin couldn't help but see how red the male's palms were. "You okay? I saw your Pokémon in a scuffle when Flit here chased after you on his own. There are some really aggressive wild Pokémon here." She looked toward the coastline, then back to the obviously strong Trainer. "What are you up to? I'm looking for a travel partner." Her eyes shifted all over the place as soon as she posed that last question.
Marley couldn't help but chuckle. "Nice to meetchya. The name's Marley Hyde. Wildest Battler this side of Arciel." Ok, so it was a self given title, but with Marley's personality, he wasn't entirely wrong. At her statement about Ironton, the Galarian chuckled. "Yeah, he's a beauty isn't he? But don't worry, he's a friendly sort, just so long as ya don't piss him off." And really, the best way to do that was attack his friends.
At her mentioning the little fight, Marley chuckled, shaking his hands which he was reminded were hurting. "Just a little bit of sparrin'. No need to worry. Brawly's a wild one, but he knows when to hold back." The Mankey grunted, shadowboxing the air as if to prove a point. When she asked what they were doing, Marley gave a small shrug. "Honestly, just out here, doin' some trainin' and explorin'." He looked over Shalin. "You heading off to the next town? If you need some protection, we can provide."
As the two of you walk along, you begin to see signs of someone else. Not good signs, either. Whoever traveled this way before you is not environmentally conscious and there is garbage scattered about.
Shalin's eyes shifted toward a trail of trash and half-eaten snacks off the beaten path. The half-eaten snacks she didn't mind so much--wild Pokémon would gobble those up over time. It was the plastic wrappers and empty aluminum soda cans. "How have people not heard of the word 'biodegradable'?" she mumbled before sliding off Prance's back. "Flit, can you give me a hand with this?" The small baggies she brought with her were supposed to be storing things she dug up on her trip, not for picking up after lazy people...but she couldn't bear to see the land polluted as such. There was a reason Kanto's main power plant was relocated farther northwest several years ago.
At least none of the trash reeked so far - an empty water bottle here, a candy bar wrapper there, but nothing truly unpleasant yet. As Flit brought another empty soda can to Shalin, the Trainer turned back to Marley. "You seeing this?" she asked, frowning. "I just don't understand. One of the first things they teach you in Pokémon school is to leave Nature the way you found it." She rambled on at a raucous pace that those listening could have sworn she didn't take a breath.

Marley hadn't really noticed the trash up until this point. He gave a small shrug. "I never attended. Had more pressing matters to attend to, growin' up." Marley replied, remembering how he had to stay back to look after his mother. But, that wasn't important. You didn't need a formal education to know that simply leaving trash scattered about wasn't the best thing to do. As he watched her pick up the garbage, his eyes noticed that it almost seemed to form a trail.
"Geez that's a lot of crap," Marley walked over, looking to inspect it. It seems whoever scattered it all was going in one particular direction. Just the sheer number of wrappers though, was this person just constantly eating as they were walking? "Well, if ya want to chew them out o'er it, looks like they went this way," Marley spoke up, gesturing to the trail of trash.
As Shalin moves along, picking up the trash with the help of her Pokemon, you realize you're moving more toward the coast. In fact, it does lead quite quickly to a camp of sorts. Tent, table with more trash mixed with a variety of Pokeballs. It seems someone came out here with a purpose... but where are they?
Aha! There was someone making camp out here. But why? Shalin stopped toward the back of the tent, a quizzical look on her face. It made little sense to set up a tent on the coastline this close to the beach. What if the wind picked up? This was also a prime practice location for new Trainers with large Water-types to learn riding. Something like a Wailord could cause a wake large enough to flood a tent this close to the beach.
Shalin turned to Marley, whispering, "I'm going to investigate further." She turned toward a curious Flit, hovering around and playing with an empty soda can. "Sorry, but I need quiet." She recalled the insect, then faced an uneasy Prance. "You stay here and keep watch. If anything happens to me, do what you have to. Otherwise, stay." She circled the tent, trying to discern what the individual was doing out here. Her first two thoughts were Surf training and fishing. Those two tended to go hand-in-hand anyway. In particular, she studied the table, its contents, and the contents of its Poké Balls for signs of which marine activity, if any, was being performed.

So, somebody was out here, camping huh? Still, that didn't explain the huge amount of trash that they were leaving behind. Seriously, unless they were feeding one hungry pokemon, but what could eat that much?
As Shalin snuck off to investigate the camp, Marley decided to keep a look out for whoever was camping here. Since they were on the coat, logic dictated that they were probably out on the water with their pokemon. Normally, he could stand up atop of Ironton and look around, but the oversized Steelix might attract some unwanted attention. Instead, he kept back, watching out the sea. A small idea occured to him. "Maggie," he whispered to his Mismagius, which was floating nearby, "Head up above and keep an eye out for anyone. You see anythin' give me a sign alright?" The ghost nodded in understanding, floating upwards. Hopefully nobody would notice a Mismagus floating in the air.
This little patch is kind of out of the way. Enough, at least, to not draw immediate attention if they had just cleaned up after themselves. All of the Pokeballs are actually empty at the moment. Soon enough, someone would emerge from the water. Someone in full scuba gear, in fact. And... dragging a less-than-pleased Tentacool along with a pouch made from much the same material as the suit adorning the person.
As they make their way, fighting with the Pokemon, it becomes clearer that this is a rather overweight woman. She starts complaining to the Tentacool that it just needs to calm down as she pulls up her mask. The Pokemon itself is actually nearing the same size as her! Lengthwise, anyhow.
(You may make Stealth rolls to avoid detection. Roll 40 or higher to go unnoticed. Or choose to confront her immediately, no need for a roll.)

Bingo! There was someone here. Scuba-diving at this time of year, though? Then again, she had the desire to practice with Levy once she was ready for evolution. Cool waters wouldn't keep her from doing that. What made this rotund individual any different? She raised a palmed hand toward a distant Prance, the Pokémon nodding and holding her ground. She gestured a thumbs-up toward Marley, as well.
Shalin slowly and deftly lifted her feet as she walked around to the other side of the tent, trying to make as little noise as possible while observing the trainer and Tentacool. Being a coastline, there was no other cover close enough to hide behind. Everything else was so distant that she'd be spotted by the time she could get there, or she would be too far away to effectively react to what happened. She somehow suspected she wasn't getting out of this without a confrontation, maybe even a violent one.
Seeing the woman coming out of the water, Marley had to clasp a hand over his mouth to avoid making any sounds. She was HUGE. And not in the amazon kind of way. Women that big should NOT be wearing anything skin tight. It was like a train wreck. You didn't want to watch it, but you couldn't look away.
Marley finally pulled her eye away from the sight to see Shalin give him the thumbs up. Ok, so they were just observing. He quickly recalled Ironton, who was trying to keep himself as low as possible. The thing was huge after all. Pretty easy to spot. Keeping himself low, he tried to watch what was happening. The Tentacool didn't seem very pleased, and what was with all the empty pokeballs?
The woman pauses when there's a bit of a flash from Marley returning his Steelix, but brushes it off and leaving the interaction as enough of a distraction for Shalin to get behind the tent undetected. Lucky you! The diver moves onto the beach and proceeds to drag the Pokemon along the sand with a few grunts and displeased noises from both of them. Making it to the table, she brushes away some of the trash and reveals some syringes. It's clear she's not going to attempt catching the Tentacool the expected way...
At the same time, a wail can be heard from nearby along with splashing. The woman ignores it for the moment.
Once Shalin caught sight of the water-breathing Pokémon bring dragged across the sand, that was it. In her travels through Hoenn, she had seen plenty of Pokémon beached by large storms. During her trip to Lilycove Island, she had made a bundle patrolling the island by making sure beached Staryu, Horsea, and many other Water-types would survive after a huge storm crashed there during her visit. Seeing someone intentionally drag pure water-breathing Pokémon out of their domain drove her just mad.
She waved Prance down toward the sands, an order with which the Stantler was quick to comply. Once she could plainly hear the sound of her partner's hooves growing to a crescendo, she blew her cover, addressing the diver. "Excuse me," Shalin interjected, scowling at the individual and the wild Tentacool she was struggling with, "but I would like to know exactly what is going on here!" She pointed to the wild, her eyes shifting toward the syringes. She had The Look on her face. That look when your best friend finds out you've been cheating on them.
There would be no backup from the Rangers this time, unlike on her delivery job in Birch. Even Arcanine-saddle, Rangers would be at least a half hour out. By the time law enforcement arrived, this confrontation would already be over, one way or another. There would only be one person saving the day today, and that would be Shalin. Well, maybe Marley as well. But mostly her.

Well, guess that was the direction this was going. As Marley watched Shalin step out from cover, addressing the fat 'woman', Marley figured it was time for him to step out as well. Fortunately for her, she would indeed have back up. And certainly back up that this fat thing wouldn't expect. "Ok, time to come back out," Marley muttered. There was a bright flash of light, and the woman would see a massive Steelix rise up, his trainer riding atop his head. "And be careful with yer answer," Marley replied, eyeing her. He had the feeling she was the sort of person who would either try to run, or try to fight.
Meanwhile, Ironton glanced out to see. Was there something out there?
The woman stops, still holding the syringe, and looks over at Shalin with a glare. "Why's that your business, kid?" With the flash and the voice from the treeline, she turned to see the giant of a Steelix with his trainer astride and sighed grumpily. Damn kids and their meddling. Couldn't she just smuggle Pokemon in peace?
Ironton would see a Lapras, struggling with a stray net. Probably another problem caused by this woman.
Suddenly, a tree moves and reveals itself as a Trevenant. A Stunfisk wriggles out of the sand. They look ready to fight and this gives the woman the opportunity she needs to grab a third Pokeball from her diving bag, ready to fight.
Shalin kept her distance the moment their target brought forth two Pokémon, and strong-looking ones at that. She couldn't discern whether or not the girl possessed weaponry of her own. Some of her survival tools were sharp enough to defend herself in a pinch, but they would be improvised weapons at best. Hopefully her and Marley could settle this in an old-fashioned Pokémon brawl.
Shalin's Stantler charged directly toward the anchored Trevenant with Astonishing speed, certainly getting the jump on the Ghost-type. Her foe reeling back, Shalin called for a follow-up attack to the other side, their sights set on piercing the foe's wavering branches to reach its ethereal core, where Ghost-types were at their most vulnerable. The moment Shalin called for the follow-up, Senna grinned.
"Trevenant, Horn Leech that Stantler!"
The words seemed to echo all around Shalin, Trevenant's reaction almost immediate. It lowered its head, using its small size to creak directly underneath its adversary. While Prance was looking for it, it thrust its head right into the Normal-type's underside. The rasping cry from Prance's voice was downright mortifying. Not only was the large Pokémon sent flying clean over the tent and in front of Shalin, the Trevenant managed to drain nearly all of Prance's life force in the process, felling her in a single blow and undoing all the work she had done.
Shaking, she was barely able to recall her Pokémon, replacing it with a very fierce-looking Vulpix. "You stay r-r-right by my s-s-side, okay?" Clearly in over her head, she only hoped Marley could provide enough backup to bring Senna down...or cover for both their retreat and let law enforcement deal with it.
