Another hour or so had passed without incident, all of the ice embedded in Shalin's left arm having melted in that time. Her arm still hurt--the skin itself would take weeks to heal, given how deep some of the Shellder's Icicle Spears had penetrated. It wasn't severe enough that she would need a wrap, but she would need to keep it covered even when the weather got warm enough to take her jacket off. Feeling warmed up now, she recalled her Ninetales and closed her eyes, trying to fall asleep.
As the sun started to fall below the horizon, the ship started decelerating. It was only when the intercom blared once more, waking Shalin up, that she realize the ship had stopped moving. "Good evening, this is your captain speaking. Our voyage's progress is impeded by a large school of Lapras directly in our path, and there are too many of them for the crew to handle themselves. We are requesting any able-bodied trainers to assist in capturing, incapacitating, or otherwise removing the impeding Lapras. Until then, we are forced to weigh anchor. Thank you for your cooperation."
Wait, what? Lapras were Pokémon that at one point were overhunted to near-extinction, their capture ban only recently lifted. She took a look out her window and rubbed her eyes. There were several dozen of the Pokémon crowding the ship! Trainers flocked to be able to get their hands on the rare and valuable Pokémon. If she really wanted to, she could even catch one and ride the rest of the way to Plum City on her own. The crew would probably have issues with that, though; there would be time to do that on the way back. The reached into her carry-on again, grabbing a pair of empty Dive Balls perfectly suited for the task.
Trainers and their Pokémon lined the deck, launching a variety of attacks--primarily Electric attacks--at the school of Ice Pokémon. "Come on, Flit!" Shalin cried, releasing her Yanma toward a distant Lapras she could barely see in the setting sun. "Supersonic!" Her arm started twitching again. Resisting the urge to pull her sleeve back and take a look at it mid-combat, she squinted toward the Lapras that Flit was doing battle with, the echo of his Supersonic attack creating waves that noticeably rocked their ship.
Flit landed on the Lapras' head, his thin legs shivering from the cold radiating from his quarry's skin. He sunk his tiny mandibles into the ice-type's forehead, adding another to the cacophony of Lapras cries filling the cold, night air out at sea. "Draw it over here!" Shalin shouted, trying to cup her hands around her mouth but only able to lift one all the way up. Her left arm was still a bit numb.
Flit got the message, luring the Lapras toward the ship. Shaking its head, the Lapras angrily chased down the bug-type, covering its head and fins in sharp shards of ice. The added speed allowed it to rocket underneath Flit, using the shards like tusks to gore his soft underside. The wounded insect laboriously hovered back to the ship, Shalin recalling her nearly-collapsed partner. She tossed a Dive Ball toward her target, the horde greatly diminished already...
By the time Shalin's target had broken out of the Ball, the Lapras' numbers had been greatly reduced, only a few trainers still trying to catch or battle one. Only a crescent of the sun was above the horizon, making it very difficult to see. What remained of the horde's population began to disperse. When only a few Lapras remained, Shalin felt the ship start to move again, bracing herself against the outer rail.
Another loud beep echoed all over the ship, followed by a familiar voice. "Good evening, this is your caprain speaking. The numbers of the school of Lapras have greatly diminished. We have raised anchor, and will be embarking toward Plum City once more. To all of the trainers who aided in the Lapras' dispersal, your call to action is greatly appreciated. We are expected to arrive at port in about an hour and a half. Please enjoy the rest of the voyage."
The ship was moving past the last few Lapras, but the one she had fought was still in arm's range. She switched hands to grab the railing with her left, tossing her other Dive Ball with her right. She would need to send Vannifar to retrieve her catch afterward, but that wouldn't be a big issue. She crossed her fingers, hoping for the best. A successful catch meant avoiding both a slow boat ride and having to purchase a ticket back...

The capture was successful after all, but it wasn't over yet. Vannifar was wounded, but was her best bet for retrieving the catch. Dive Balls were more buoyant than most Poké Balls, but it too would sink to the bottom of the sea if Shalin took too long. "Vannifar," she addressed the Tentacool as she was releasing her, "I need you to retrieve Classie's Poké Ball for me."
The Lapras was Shalin's fourth Water-type. With this many aquatic Pokémon, she thought about investing in some scuba gear and explore the world beneath the waves. She did that once during her Hoenn trip and was blown away at how beautiful it was underwater. That would be a project for the summer, though.
Vannifar's faintly-glowing red patches of skin were just enough light for her trainer to track her, wrapping one of her tentacles around the Dive Ball and floating back toward the ship. "Turn a little bit to your right!" she shouted toward the Tentacool, moving at roughly half her usual speed. It looked like she was merely floating and drifting from how much holding the Dive Ball slowed her down.
"That's close enough!" Shalin cried again, Vannifar in range to be recalled. Once she was a safe distance from the ship's edge, she called out her Tentacool once more, just long enough to retrieve the captured Lapras. "Welcome to the team, Classie. You'll be needed when we go back to the mainland." The gentle, aquatic giant smiled at her as she pointed her Pokédex at the blue Ball, sending it back with the rest of her inactive allies.
This entire voyage had been far more of a journey than she expected, but she was almost there. There were some murmurs among passengers in the cabin, but not so much that she couldn't try to pass back out until arrival. In theory, it would be easy, with sunlight no longer lighting the cabin; there were only the aisle lights and a couple of reading lights on two rows in front of her. The rest of the passengers' cabin was dark. She closed her eyes, thinking about how much fun training Classie would be...

The sound of a loud, now-familiar beep abruptly woke Shalin up. "Good evening, this is your captain speaking. We are minutes from arrival in the port of Plum City. We ask that all passengers stow large electronic devices and return tray tables to their upright positions at this time. Smaller electronic devices can continue to be used. Please check under your seat and in the overhead bins for personal items. If you are in our battle facility, we ask that you cease your battles immediately. If you are in our gaming hall, please return any items that were checked out. All passengers are to return to the main cabin in preparation to disembark. We thank you for your patronage, and hope you sail with us again."
That was quick. Peeking out the window, Shalin could see a lighthouse's beam circling, as well as several other bright lights coming from the west. For such a small town, Plum City had quite the large port. "Finally!" she sighed, stretching. She made sure to gather all her supplies. To her surprise, there were two vials of Paralyze Heal next to her backpack in the bin above her seat, and there were no other bags in it. Someone didn't double-check their bag before leaving! She checked the vials for identifying labels, but couldn't find any. It would be impossible to track down their true owner in just a few minutes. She felt a little guilty stowing them with the rest of her supplies, but they would go completely to waste otherwise.

Around ten minutes after the announcement, all of the internal cabin lights came on and the external ramp extended to the dock. She had arrived in Plum City, at last. The first few passengers to exit ran down the ramp. all the rest forced to keep pace with the slowest in front of them on the narrow pier. Shalin hoisted her backpack behind her when it was her turn to disembark. As she was walking across the pier, a young boy in front of her let out a sudden scream, causing her to flinch. She looked down, barely catching a glimpse of an Inkay floating away.
The first order of business would be getting to a Pokémon Center, as there was not one on the ship. Her team was hurt from both the Trainer battle and the battle with the wild Lapras. So were a lot of others, though. The Pokémon Center at port was going to be busy. She didn't feel like searching for another one in this iron maze, her slang term for major metropolitan areas.
Shalin smiled when she saw the line at the Pokémon Center was short - only a couple of minutes. When it came to be her turn, the nurse on duty explained why it was ao short: "Due to extremely high volume, we ask that you take a number and be seated." Be seated where? Every bench and chair in the Center was full - it was standing room only.
A doorbell-like sound rang in the Pokémon Center's lobby, followed by a feminine, electronic voice: "Now serving number 850 at kiosk 11." She looked down at her ticket and realized around a hundred people were in line ahead of her. Not wanting to stand around that long, she left the facility, figuring she would have time to book lodging for the evening.
