The grass underfoot was a welcome sensation to the sand they'd just left, and both Torchic and Fembra danced around happily, the latter being careful not to light anything with her tail.
They hadn't been walking for very long before she noticed that Torchic had disappeared, and she looked around for it while Fembra continued on ahead. She didn't have to search the area for very long, though, because the firebird hopped up a few moments after making some very alarming gagging noises with something round and green protruding from his mouth. Faolan quickly bent to smack the pokemon on the back and, when that didn't work, she quickly hefted him up by his legs and shook him upside-down until he was able to spit out whatever he had in his beak.
The Lum berry flew out from his mouth and fell harmlessly into the brush below. Although she highly considered just leaving it there, eventually Faolan bent to pick it up after noting that it hadn't been punctured and was relatively intact. Torchic had already run after Fembra by the time she'd put it in her bag, and with a sigh the blonde followed along after, noting that she had to keep a better eye on him.
There were a few stragglers here and there, and it wasn't long before Faolan noticed a woman coming up the path smelling faintly of perfume. She held a basket in one hand and, at the blonde's approach, immediately scooted forward with pokeball in the other. Faolan groaned internally at the site and scooted both Fembra and Torchic off to the side behind her leg. Sure enough, when the woman got within hearing distance she brandished the pokeball and shouted, "I challenge you to a pokemon battle! ... or, buy my products!"
"Products...?" Faolan arched an inquisitive brow, which was all the invitation the woman needed to showcase the wares that she had to offer. Everything was branded with the name of one of those independently owned beauty marts that were so popular with young and old entrepeneurs. She remembered the "makeover" parties that her mom would host filled with a few well-intentioned newbies. Her mother would always buy everything they had to offer with the hope that it would make her young and therefore, attractive enough to keep her father from wandering. It didn't work too well.
Faolan glanced over her team. Carvanha probably deserved a rest, but that left the rest of the group. She really didn't want to buy anything this woman had to offer, but she couldn't really afford to battle, either, not with the discrepancy in levels her pokemon had.
She met eyes with Fembra, who shied away, but then met her gaze determinedly. Well, that settled it.
"All right." She agreed, and Torchic bounded forward immediately. Faolan quickly wrangled it back via its little feathers on top of his head and scooted it back behind her leg. Although it would have been nice to test the waters, it was still a baby. She made the gesture for Fembra to move forward and she did, cautiously, keeping an eye on the lady in front of her. The lady beamed and clapped her hands and tossed out a pokeball, and a Combee emerged in a flash of bright light.
Well, that was easy enough. She knew type advantages well enough to know that bugs really didn't like being burned, so that clearly meant she should just spam Ember. The fire-type spit a barrage of flames at the flying Combee, which weaved and dodged them effortlessly so it could come in close and Bug Bite at Fembra. Whether it was because the pokemon's mouths were so small, or because the move had a type disadvantage against her pokemon, Faolan didn't know; but Fembra took the opportunity of the Combee being closer to turn her head and blow a barrage of Ember right on the pokemon's body. The Combee screeched at the assault and immediately buzzed back - Fembra looked shyly back at her trainer, checking for praise, and therefore was not able to catch when the Combee flew back in and landed a barrage of attacks against her with Struggle Bug, but thankfully it was another type move that didn't do much in the way of damage. Again, Fembra blew another stream of Ember flames against the pokemon, and the lady quickly recalled it before the bug was set on fire.
Fembra looked rather proud of herself and ran to Faolan for her praise. Unfortunately, Torchic ran out to take her place automatically, leading into the next fight against the woman's Budew before Faolan had a chance to recall it.
... well, if it was fainted it would be easier to babysit, wouldn't it? And at least Torchic was willing to try, so she could at least let it do that much. She allowed Fembra to hover behind her and, after checking Torchic's moves quickly with the Pokedex, called out for it hit the opponent with a Tackle attack. As expected, the Budew wasn't even fazed. It hit Torchic with a well placed Stun Spore before he could get out another tackle, and while it stood there paralyzed Budew followed it up with an Absorb. The attack immediately weakened Torchic to the point of near fainting, and although Faolan commanded it to Tackle it was still too stunned to do anything. The next Absorb knocked Torchic over effortlessly, and Faolan recalled it before sending Fembra off in its place. Like before, the fire-type blew out a barrage of Ember attacks, and although the Budew tried to Absorb health off of Fembra, it was no match for the flames that began to lick painfully at its leaves and feet.
The Aroma lady recalled the Budew before further damage could be done, and threw out her last pokemon. A Petilil emerged, primping itself and spinning coquettishly out at them. Like the one before it, it tried to Absorb from a distance, which was a smart strategy; but Fembra spat out flames even from where she was, and slowly began to whittle down the Petilil's health. It wasn't until the opposing pokemon cast Sleep Powder that Faolan began to get worried, but when it just started to hit with multiple Absorb attacks her worry began to dissipate. Sure, it was still whittling down Fembra's health, but it wasn't anything too concerning even for the pokemon's low levels. Just as the Petilil spat out a Leech Seed, then did Fembra open her eyes, and Faolan commanded her to work herself up with Outrage. Fembra rushed at the Petilil before her, swinging her arms and tail wildly and beating down on the poor Pokemon until the Aroma Lady recalled her with a huff and made some comment about having to break for tea.
Faolan was glad to see her go; she didn't think she could sit through any more of those parties.
The next town was starting to look a little closer and for that she was grateful. With Torchic out of commission she felt a little crippled, but it helped that Fembra seemed to get a little stronger and a bit more confident in her abilities as a whole. However, when she looked to the Charmander she shied away again, seemingly too nervous to meet her master's gaze. Well. Maybe someday she'd feel more comfortable.
Fembra looked up suddenly, curiosity in her eyes, and when Faolan looked she was greeted with the sight of a large, rotund belly and a pair of feet blocking the path ahead. She'd recognize that pokemon anywhere and stopped just within reach of the slumbering Snorlax. It wasn't exactly blocking their path, especially considering it was on the smaller end of the size spectrum, but it was still a pain. She could climb over it, or battle it, but if it fainted it wouldn't really help because it would still be in the way.
Eventually, although Fembra eyed it the whole time they moved, they managed to walk around the sleeping pokemon just as it started talking in its sleep, uttering bits of its own name as it slumbered on.
She could just make out the tops of the buildings of Cedar Town when Fembra tugged at her pants leg and pointed off to the side. When she looked she saw there was a Goldeen and a Tentacool swimming around each other in an odd kind of dance - or was it a mating ritual? It was hard to tell. It was almost hypnotic, in a sense, and the pair simply stood there watching Tentacool's limbs flop about and Goldeen's horn bobbing up and down in the waves. Maybe they were fighting? Possibly.
She debated having Fembra try her luck with these two, but thought against it when she saw how tired the Charmander was. Another battle, especially against water-types, would most certainly knock her out, and if Faolan happened across a pokemon that was a little less friendly than those she was running into now that wouldn't do her much good. She had Carvanha, of course, but it wouldn't do her much good to rely on him solely for all her battles.
After a moment the ocean current carried them both out to sea, and the pair continued on their way. Faolan continued to finger the single pokeball she had left and wondered if they might find something to catch before they reached the next town. She realized she could have caught any of the ones they battled, but they hadn't caught her interest well enough. Maybe next time.
Well now she had a bit of a dilemma. On the one hand, the city was right there, but on the other there were currently a school of Finneon swimming very frantically in the ocean beside her path as though they were following her. She didn't think they could beach themselves if they wanted to attack, but one of them in particular looked rather large, and she was tempted. Sorely tempted.
She still had Carvanha in her roster and he was honestly the best bet against a school like this in the water. She knew she couldn't count on Fembra to do much, which wasn't her fault, but it did leave her at a bit of a disadvantage. She had no need for water types, but if anything the experience from such a battle would be nice.
Well, if Carvanha couldn't do it, she'd understand. But he'd at least be able to try, and given his proclivity for biting his opponents, he'd probably really enjoy the fight.
Pulling out his pokeball, she gave it a kiss before flinging it over the ocean. Carvanha emerged and immediately locked eyes on the group of fish swimming nearby, snapping his jaws menacingly. The tiniest of the Finneon swam hastily back and forth, but the other two remained where they were, watching the Carvanha to see what he would do. A thought struck Faolan then, and she remembered the Chingling she had still waiting in the wings. It was vastly underleveled, but in this instance every little bit helped, right? She thumbed its pokeball idly, keeping hold of it before directing Carvanha to attack. Like before the pokemon lunged forward into the school of fish with snapping jaws to Bite frantically at whoever he could reach, which happened to be the tiniest one that had been swimming anxiously in wait. Having not expected the attack so soon the fish yelped and beat its fins in a hasty retreat out of the area, with Carvanha hot on his heels until Faolan called him back to the water back with a command.
The average Finneon moved to attack, and Faolan was ready with another Bite command. The Carvanha eagerly leapt into action, sinking its rows of sharp teeth into the fish and flapping its fins like he were ripping and tearing at it. Fortunately the Finneon managed to break free, and when it did it spat out a streaming Water Gun at Carvanha that splashed effortlessly to the sides. Carvanha rushed in to Bite at it again, and this time the impact was jarring the Finneon actually flinched with the motion.
The Huge Finneon was not to be forgotten, though, and immediately blasted a dazzling Psybeam at Carvanha which - actually didn't really do anything. It was like a glorified light show, really. Upon seeing its mistake, the huge fish huffed out impatiently and blasted a Signal Beam this time, and the resulting impact was enough to make Carvanha relinquish its hold on the Finneon in its mouth. The hit hurt, and it actually looked mad enough to turn away from the Finneon it had been attacking and focus on the huge one in front of it. Not the best idea, but it was three on one, and so Faolan sought to improve the odds.
Tossing Chingling's pokeball into the water, like before she checked its moves as it emerged and was a little concerned to see just one: Wrap. Better that than nothing, she supposed, and she swiftly commanded it to use the move to restrain the average Finneon from interfering in the fight between Carvanha and the huge boss. A well-executed Focus Energy had Carvanha shuddering with anticipation of battle, and as the huge Finneon tried again with another Psybeam, Carvanha flat-out bumrushed it again with its teeth snapping ferally in its direction. There wasn't much in the way of size difference between them - from this angle, they looked about the same - and so Carvanha was able to sink its teeth into the pokemon's fins and twist viciously back and forth in an attempt to inflict as much damage as possible. The Finneon let out a screech of pain and beat its fins back and forth while its smaller minion struggled to break out of Chingling's hold to help. Carvanha jettisoned back and away from the Huge fish and it took the opportunity to blast another Signal Beam at the orange colored pokemon, which was enough to knock it off course and buy the pair of pokemon some time. Chingling's hold on Finneon was starting to break as it struggled and squirmed to get free, and although the bites were doing well enough they were starting to run out of options.
Faolan spoke loud enough to be heard over the din and called out a Rage command, and Carvanha quickly worked himself up into a frenzy with violent splashing. The Finneon fired off multiple Signal Beams, some missing, others hitting Carvanha square on, but the orange fish was already rushing in at the Finneon to slam its body into it over and over and over again in a furious rage. Like before, the combination of Rough Skin and Rage whittled down the pokemon's health in increments, and by the time the Average sized Finneon had burst out of the Chingling's hold and blasted it to fainting with a Water Gun, the boss was limping and struggling to stay afloat. Seeing that the chances of victory were starting to look abysmal, it also fled off into the depths of the sea with the fish from before.
Carvanha himself was looking weary and run-down, but the bloodlust in its eyes was unmistakable. The huge Finneon saw it and as a last resort - turned to show off its back fins and sway alluringly from side to side. Was it trying to attract Carvanha? It had no effect, and after watching the display unblinkingly Carvanha rushed in, ready to attack with its teeth snapping out another Bite attack. The pokemon cried out in pain and tried to fire off another Signal Beam, but the proximity of Carvanha was too close for it to actually get a good hit in, and eventually it passed out.
Faolan returned the pokemon before it could go for the killing blow like before and turned to Fembra who was watching quietly. After patting the fire-type on the head, she guided it along and the pair headed into the town for some well-deserved rest.
