Set in the original region of Arciel, Legends Rising is a route-inspired, but not strictly route-based, Pokemon roleplay. Pick a faction, pick a class, and strike out into the wild to take on the League, master Contest coordination, research the mysteries of Pokemon and Arciel, and much, much more. Will you be a classic trainer? A criminal? A farmer? Choose your destiny on Legends Rising.
The glow within the egg coalesced into a small steel-type Faolan was somewhat familiar with, having been a fan of most of that particular typing. An Aron blinked sleepily from the remains of its egg, and although she gave it a gentle pat on the head - which it butted tiredly, after glossing its body over with an instinctive Harden - it didn't do much else. Tired baby. She helped him get to his feet and, when she saw that he really wasn't making much progress on walking, returning him to a pokeball so he could get some rest.
Eventually the beach gave way to a long stretch of grassy plain along the coast, and having moderately enjoyed her trek beside the beach thus far Faolan was in a relatively good mood as she continued along the route. Fembra had her eyes peeled for any additional items that may turn up, grateful to be helpful to her trainer in some regard, and although they didn't much talk there was still a shared, companionable silence between trainer and pokemon.
At some point Faolan decided to give Torchic a little outdoor time, and she released the firebird out so it could run around and quite literally roll around on the grass for no apparent reason other than it felt the urge to. Fembra was content to just walk alongside her trainer, but kept an eye on the youngster in case it decided to put things in its mouth that didn't belong there.
At some point a Buizel appeared, following alongside the trio for a little while and moving faster and faster with each moment. Not wanting to get in the water, but wanting to get a close up view for himself, Torchic ran to the edge in dangerous proximity of the Splash Zone and squawked obnoxiously at it while hopping up and down and running in circles. The Buizel paid him no mind - apparently he was marathon training for something - and it wasn't long until he disappeared under the currents and emerge some feet away, and growing faster. Torchic made another cry that sounded more disappointed than anything, and eventually returned to his trainer as their path took a turn away from the coast.
It was when they were passing by a small collection of houses propped up on stilts over the beach that Torchic spotted something and ran ahead of the group. He disappeared momentarily out of sight and Fembra was quick to chase after them, with Faolan close behind. When she crested a grassy dune she spotted Torchic making small spins in front of a Mismagius, which repeated the motion in kind while levitating above the ground. It didn't seem like the creature would attack, having too much fun engaging in some odd spinning contest with the other pokemon, and after letting Torchic play for a little while Faolan gently nudged him to get him to start walking again. This was met with a rowdy squak from the firebird, but he eventually acquiesced and they left the Mismagius alone to its own devices while they continued along the path. Torchic kept looking back at the pokemon longingly, and after a sigh Faolan turned back to the creature, which had been floating idly behind them, and considered it carefully. She still had a few pokeballs, and a Mismagius would be a decent addition to her team...
Not wanting to waste her one Ultra Ball, she fished out one of the poke balls she had on her and met eyes with the Mismagius. It regarded her lazily, still bobbing gently up and down, and after a moment's thought she tossed the pokeball at the ghost-type.
Torchic cheered as soon as the pokeball stilled and went over to peck at it briefly before it was transported away to the PC. Faolan was mildly surprised to say the least; but perhaps the Mismagius and Torchic were close enough in age that it was ready and willing to play with a new friend. She checked its details on the pokedex app she had on her phone and hummed over the move list she saw there. Not bad. Especially since most normal-type attacks couldn't actually hit a ghost, it seemed like luck was on her side.
Fembra was hovering a bit away, watching the exchange, and when she saw the pokeball disappear she seemed to breathe a sigh of relief and crept a little closer. Faolan gave her a little pet on the head and, after wrangling Torchic back into some semblance of order - he'd taken it upon himself to spin in circles in his excitement, faster and faster until he was basically mimicking a Hitmontop - they continued down the path, Faolan watching as the next city crept closer and closer.
Fembra was doing a good enough job keeping Torchic under control, although occasionally the firebird would break free and run off to scoop up a rock, pebble or particularly attractive looking piece of litter left behind by careless trainers. He would always return to show off his find triumphantly and, once it had been plucked from his beak, immediately went off in search of more. Fembra would give chase a few times but ultimately didn't pursue him unless it was a rather nasty looking rock or something that most definitely would not be good for his tastebuds if he got it in his mouth. Torchic was, in most sense of the word, a child, and it was probably better for him to learn by doing provided he didn't hurt himself too badly in the process.
A little ways ahead Faolan spotted a man standing in the middle of the field with a pokemon swooping and diving all around him. It didn't take much for Torchic and Fembra to notice and, when they did, Torchic immediately ran off squawking excitedly as though to either scare the pokemon away or join them. By the time Fembra and Faolan caught up Torchic was hopping up and down excitedly at the man's feet, who had stooped to ruffle his feathers gently before turning to the approaching newcomers. He actually regarded Faolan with a look she recognized all too well, and she schooled her expression into something carefully neutral before gesturing the Torchic back.
"Hey there," he greeted, and locked eyes with her. "Shou's the name. Care for a battle?" Before she could agree or disagree he went on, mouth slanting into a sly grin. "If I win, you let me take you out to dinner. Sound good?" He lifted an arm and the Noibat that had been fluttering around his head landed on his gloved hand, and both trainer and pokemon watched the blonde for her reponse. Excited at the prospect of food in any capacity, Torchic looked up hopefully at his trainer and she felt annoyance tug at her features. While she didn't particularly mind a free meal, there was something about the situation that bugged her. She knew she could just as easily walk away, but now that the challenge was out there she couldn't help the competitive side of her rearing its ugly head.
"I'll do you one better. I don't do dinner, but I'll let you have my company for the night. Deal?" She didn't elaborate on that much, but given how Shou's eyes lit up with thoughts she'd rather not know, she didn't think she'd have to. Men were so predictable.
They took up spots a little ways away from each other to get enough room to fight, and the grey-haired male took out a pokeball from his belt and tossed it into the air. A Hawlucha emerged with a roaring trill, and after a moment's consideration Faolan let Torchic free so he could rush into battle. The two bird pokemon sized each other up carefully but Torchic, surprisingly, did not go ham straight away until Shou called out an attack. Hawlucha flew at Torchic to beat at him with a Wing Attack, and the bird pokemon was battered back towards his trainer with the impact. Already tired - probably due to his running around like an overexcited child - Torchic took longer than necessary to shake it off and by the time he was able to lash out with a Scratch attack the Hawlucha could easily hop away and out of reach. Torchic staggered with the force of its missed attack straight into another Wing Attack, and it let out a cry as it was continously battered with the move.
Shou gave Faolan a cocky grin as her pokemon was beat, but before he could call out another attack Torchic had regained his composure and moved to counter with another Scratch attack. Thinking fast, Shou commanded Hawlucha to use Detect, which the pokemon did and was able to avoid Torchic's attack. As it lunged towards Torchic in a follow-up Tackle, Faolan commanded it swiftly to use Ember and Torchic gladly blew out a barrage of flames against Hawlucha's charging body. The Pokemon attempted to push against it but the continuous exposure to the fire cause Hawlucha's body to become badly burned, and without any sort of Burn Heal or Rawst Berry this battle would go south quick. Every move the Hawlucha made caused it to cry out in pain until, unable to bear the sound of his pokemon's whimpers, Shou returned it to its pokeball. Although he looked apologetically at the pokeball, the expression he turned to Torchic and, simultaneously, Faolan was determined. He thrust his arm out and the Noibat on it took flight before it blasted Torchic with a Gust attack and simultaneously started the next round.
Torchic managed to get a few Embers in, but with how fast and how ranged the Noibat was it didn't do much damage. It only took a few more Gusts before Torchic was keeling over, exhausted, and Faolan returned him to his pokeball. The Noibat landed and let out a triumphant cry, and Fembra stepped out to the field.
The Charmander did better, and it was mostly due to Noibat's combined Flying/Dragon typing. Outrage worked well in their favor, and since the Noibat had grounded itself earlier each time it tried to escape in flight Fembra simply wouldn't let it. One Outrage bled into another when Fembra was lucky enough not to get confused, and in no time at all the Noibat was laying, battered and exhausted, on the ground while Fembra stood triumphantly over him.
After he recalled the Pokemon Shou begrudgingly congratulated her on her win. Admittedly her upping the ante had distracted him, and he vowed to do better next time. Faolan scoffed, but he still grinned at her regardless and they parted ways with no further conversation. If she ran into him later, she probably wouldn't mind another battle - provided he didn't tack on a stupid condition like last time.
After she had parted ways with the Bird Keeper Faolan and Fembra continued on down the path. The blonde could see Bass City not that much further up, and knowing how close she was filled her with a combined feeling of excitement and nervousness. In Bass she would be able to challenge the gym leader, but she recalled to mind how Marley had said how difficult he was to beat and found herself a little wary. With little to no electric types on her team that would make sweeping through a water-type gym a breeze, she would have to strategize to think about how best to take him down.
The coastline stretched out before them, with the sands of beaches far-reaching and bleeding out into the plains. She could see a few families out and about with their children, either playing in the sand or sunning themselves languidly, with a few even riding pokemon in the waves. Fembra looked at all this curiously, and it wasn't until they had reached a more private stretch of sand that they hard a small voice call out to them from afar, and a tiny child carrying an inner tube ran up with a finger pointed at Faolan's Charmander.
"Hey, hey!! I'm Rodrigue, your pokemon is really neat, do you wanna battle? Do you??"
Faolan didn't have much experience with children, having grown up an only child - she was sure even her father wouldn't dare to take any of his love-children home to her mother, no matter their circumstances - and looked from the child to Fembra with some curiosity. After a moment she agreed, and, surprisingly, the child led them both to the coastline and a good stretch of beach. His first Pokemon was tossed immediately into the water and she knew she wouldn't be able to use Fembra for this; but fortunately, Carvanha hadn't had a bout the whole time during their excursion and she was fairly sure he was itching for a battle.
She tossed his pokeball into the water, much to the child's surprise, and when he emerged with a snapping of teeth, darting back and forth angrily between the waters, she saw Rodrigue swallow lightly. His pokemon of choice was a Mantyke, and she knew just off the top of her head that it was, effectively, a baby. Perhaps she should have used Charmander for this, if only to lessen the blow.
Carvanha's eyes focused in on the Mantyke with an almost hungry battle-lust, and after hesitating only slightly Rodrigue called out his attack to begin the battle. Faolan didn't know what he expected a Water Gun to do, on a water-type, in the water - but that didn't stop Rodrigue from attempting it anyway. Carvanha blew through it as it lunged straight at the Mantyke, jaws wide so it could Bite into its stubby wing and start shaking it around. The Mantyke could only hold on for dear life and attempt to blast at Carvanha with a Supersonic but given how hard Faolan's Pokemon was dragging it around the move barely hit. Desperate, Rodrigue tried to Tackle when Carvanha finally let go, and the attack hit - though Mantyke reeled back in pain at the sharp drag of Carvanha's Rough Skin - and the small moment of victory at landing the attack was enough to distract Rodrigue momentarily from the Rage Faolan called out. Carvanha went wild, battering Mantyke over and over with body and teeth and fins and Rough Skin, and before they knew it the battle was over. Rodrigue withdrew his pokemon, sulking, and stared for a long moment at his second pokeball before tossing it, too, into the water.
Corsola emerged wih a bounce and a happy squeal, and although Carvanha was confused almost immediately after, the pink pokemon slamming into it with a Tackle attack actually worked to snap Carvanha out of it almost immediately. Faolan followed it up with a Focus Energy, and Rodrigue mirrored it with Corsola's Harden, but by the time Carvanha began to Bite into the pokemon it still wasn't enough. Panicking, Rodrigue commanded Corsola to Harden again and again, hoping that would save the pokemon. And it did, for a little while, but eventually it didn't have any harder to go, and when Rodrigue started attacking Carvanha Corsola still hurt itself on his Rough Skin. Another bout of Rage and the battle was over, and Rodrigue had no choice but to retrieve his pokemon.
Faolan would have told him on how well he did, despite his age - but the boy ran off crying and disappeared over the sands. Fembra watched him go with some concern, but after a gentle nudge both pokemon and trainer continued on their way.
The closer she got to the city the more families she spotted here and there along the beach, the sands of which were far-reaching and extended close to her path. Somehow the sight of seeing all those happy, unassuming families made her focus just that much harder on getting to Bass City. If Fembra noticed her quickened pace she didn't comment on it, and they had just gotten within sight of the city limits before Faolan noticed a small child blocking the path. The determined light in the girl's eyes made her inwardly sigh. They were so close.
Faolan stopped a few feet away and set her hand on her hip. The girl was peering up at her, pokeball in hand, inner tube clutched around her middle with the other. Not really knowing how to deal with kids - her only experience was that she had been one - Faolan stared her down and made a motion with her head for the child to move.
"I'm not going to battle you. So you might as well get out of my way."
The girl, her hair done up in little round buns at either side of her head, shook her head vehemently and brandished a pokeball. When she spoke she had the same kind of tone that particularly small children had where they couldn't quite pronounce their words, and Faolan felt a little bit of her heart thaw a little in the face of it. "Battle pwease."
The blonde looked this way and that. Fembra also did the same, though she was regarding the child somewhat warily, her eyes looking from the girl to her trainer whilst waiting to see what she would do. In the end Faolan sighed and strode over to the girl, who clutched her inner tube tighter the closer the blonde got. She crouched down so that she was eye level with the child and began to speak.
"You like pokemon, don't you?" The girl nodded. "Especially your pokemon. Aren't they your partners?" Again, another nod. Faolan's tone was soft, but kind, the sort any adult would take when they were explaining something very difficult to a small child. Beside her, Fembra listened with rapt attention. "So then would you be able to handle if they got hurt? Would you be able to wtihstand seeing them in pain? Because if you continue down this route, I'm pretty sure that's what's going to happen. That's not very nice of you, especially if they're your friends."
The girl considered her words carefully. The way in which they delivered was so serious it was hard to tell whether or not Faolan would back it up. The child looked from Faolan to the Charmander at her side, and then back again, almost as though she were waiting to see if either of them would break out into laughter. When it didn't come and Faolan's face remained completely stoic, the girl puffed out her lower lip in a sulk and turned to run back to her family.
Faolan straightened with a huff of breath and pushed her hair over her shoulder. She didn't do have much experience with children, but she seemed to do okay. The way to Bass City now clear, she continued on up to the entrance and to her destination.
