There were a few more herds of pokemon on either side of their path as they continued, but none were near enough to prove a valid threat and for that Faolan was glad. Aron finally began to slow down and then, after a moment's thought, immediately curled up for a nap, and the blonde was quick to return him to his ball so he could get a proper rest. It was Fembra she was concerned about, though, especially since the lizard seemed content to keep on walking despite the occasional stumble and sleepy yawn that escaped her. It wasn't too far out from the next town, she thought; just had to get through the Weeping Forest and then they would be in Ash City.
"Are you all right?" She asked, once Fembra stumbled for maybe the third time. She looked over reassuringly, giving a soft "Chaaar" in response. It would have been more comforting if she didn't look so tired, but Faolan allowed her her pride instead of pressing the issue, and she looked ahead - just in time to see a Pancham blocking the path, squared up as though it were ready to fight them. Fembra immediately went on the defensive as they apprached, and the Pancham only looked more irate, his little paws going through the motions of practicing a few jabs and hooks. It was a stance she didn't much recognize, but the little guy looked determined not to move unless he was beaten, and Faolan supposed she had no choice but to give it to him.
But before either of them could make a move, there was a flash of light and Reddy appeared flapping his little wings and hopping about. He took one look at the situation unfolding around him and his eyes seemed to hone in on the Pancham waiting and ready to fight. Before his leash could be clipped onto him he was off, his little bird feet taking him as fast as possible towards the wild pokemon and the potential new friend. The Pancham, surprised at this turn of events, pulled his foot back into another defensive stance and, once Torchic was in reach, immediately brought its little paw down in a reckless Karate Chop right down in the middle of Reddy's forehead.
This actually caused him to stop, and for a moment he went utterly still. The Pancham's expression broke into a smug little smile, but then Reddy blinked, and quickly hopped up, perching on what it could of Pancham and Pecking all over its body with his beak. The Pancham scrambled to crawl away, but Reddy continued drilling it like a mad woodpecker, unleashing an energetic barrage of Pecks all over its little body.
Pancham hit Torchic with another Karate Chop, and Torchic just kept... Pecking on through. Now the pokemon was trying to get away, because those pecks actually hurt, moreso when Reddy suddenly reared back and blew a spitting stream of Embers at the wild pokemon. Now slightly singed, the creature hit the ground and pivoted quick, moving to grab Torchic to throw him high and far in a Circle Throw. The attack hit and Torchic when flying, and the pokemon took the opportunity to escape.
After the Pancham had fled in sheer terror of Reddy's boisterous energy - passing by a confused looking Drilbur in the process who was just trying to take a nap- the Torchic managed to run after it only until it disappeared over a grassy knoll, at which point Fembra, who'd been after him, managed to get his leash clipped back onto his torso and drag him back. Reddy kicked his little bird feet and rolled over until he was face first in the dirt, not seeming at all bothered by Fembra continuously dragging him along and actually, quite at peace with it and the world.
And then he began to glow. It was a bright, blinding thing, and as Faolan and Fembra watched he began to elongate and shift form, growing actually a lot bigger than before and even taking on a bit of a different shape as well. He grew and grew until he was close to Faolan in height than before, and when the light vanished there stood a huger-than-average Combusken, who was blinking blearily at them.
Any uncertainty as to whether or not this changed Torchic's personality in any way was immediately dissipated when he spotted a particularly appetizing clump of gravel and went right for it. The leash and harness that had been hooked around his body prior had torn with the sudden expansion of his torso, and Fembra looked for a moment at the end of the now-useless leash and then to her trainer, helpless.
Faolan felt the beginnings of a migraine begin to set in as the sounds of gagging filled the air. Not wanting him to hurt himself unnecessarily (especially so soon after evolving), she was quick to return Reddy to his ball, Fembra reeling in the leash and harness to tuck away, and the pair continued on.
The longer they walked, the more it seemed that the forest was going to be a bit more arduous of a walk before they got to the next town over. It seemed to tower and expand more the closer she got, and Faolan found herself checking over her supplies as she tried to surmise if she had enough to make the trip. It was as she was checking her pack that a Hitmonlee moved in front of their path, bouncing from leg to leg as it regarded them warily, and Fembra regarded him in turn.
The Hitmonlee extended a hand and made a "come closer" gesture, and Fembra tensed, her gaze darting up to Faolan as though asking for her input. Knowing that Fembra probably wouldn't do well in a hand-to-hand fight - and also that Reddy still had the type advantage - she took his pokeball and released him, the bird looking at first cranky and then curious when he saw the Hitmonlee blocking their path. The wild pokemon stared at him and switched from foot to foot, and after examining him for a little while Reddy did the same. They mimicked each other for a little while, waiting for some invisible signal - and then Reddy began to run ahead, pivoting off one foot and unleashing a barrage of Double Kicks at Hitmonlee at Faolan's command. The pokemon was fast, but not quite as fast as Reddy, who managed to get in the first of two hits before Hitmonlee swept out a leg in a Low Sweep and knocked the Combusken to the ground. Reddy hit the dirt with an aggravated chirping noise and kicked himself off, head slamming forward to Peck at Hitmonlee which connected in a smashing blow.
Skidding back in the gravel a bit, Hitmonlee shook it off and huffed, now stretching out his shoulders and bouncing from foot to foot before he spin-kicked into a Brick Break that landed squarely on Reddy's head. Reddy reeled back from the impact, stars spinning in his vision, and Fembra actually looked concerned and cried out a warning as Hitmonlee disappeared from sight, only to reappear behind Reddy and slam his leg into the back of his head in a Feint attack. The blow knocked Reddy to the ground, the already tired pokemon pushed to his limits even more, and Hitmonlee bounced expertly out of the way and went back to hopping from foot to foot, keeping his adrenaline going.
Reddy pushed himself up with a huff and shook gravel out of his beak, looking at Faolan and then back to Hitmonlee with a look that seemed... sulky at best. Despite the situation Faolan couldn't help the small smile that curved her lips. At least it was a reassurance he was still the same bratty Torchic from a few hours earlier.
"Another Peck attack, Reddy," She commanded swiftly, and as the Hitmonlee disappeared from side, reappearing at Combusken's side to hit him with another Feint, Reddy took the opportunity to slam his head forward and smash his beak square into the middle of Hitmonlee's forehead. The attack send the creature reeling back, momentarily stunned both from the blow and from the fact he hadn't seen it coming, and Combusken was able to get on the offensive.
"Ember, then Peck it, Reddy!" Faolan called, and while the Hitmonlee was still reeling Reddy spat a series of burning flames at the wild pokemon, some of the Ember fanning over his body with excruciating heat while the remainder got into his eyes and made him kick a little in alarm. Running up, Combusken slammed his head forward in another wild Peck that knocked the Hitmonlee into the dirt. He Endured the hit well enough, but with one final Scratch from Reddy, he slumped to the ground, defeated.
The bird gave a triumphant chirp and immediately started pecking at the springs in Hitmonlee's legs, which the wild pokemon kicked weakly at him for before he moved to take a rest. Combusken chirped something else, even going so far as to wave a little, and followed hurriedly along behind Faolan with the high of battle seeping into his blood.
Despite winning the fight against the Hitmonlee, Reddy was actually fairly calm. While Faolan liked to think it was because maybe his evolution had done something with the endless spring of energy he had at all times, perhaps he had taken more of a beating than initially thought. Concerned, she directed both him and Fembra to follow her to a lone tree sprouting along the path, and after checking to make sure there weren't any pokemon that would spring down on them from above, she directed Reddy to sit so she could look over any wounds he might have.
There were the beginnings of what looked like bruises from all the heavy blows of Hitmonlee's legs, but he was okay aside from that. As she checked over his feathers on top of his head, Reddy gave a weary yawn and kicked his feet a little from side to side, waiting for her to finish - until he suddenly ducked forward, claws picking up some plastic bottles out of the dirt. Chirping at his find, he held it up to Faolan as though it were payment for her to get off of him so he could run around again, and as she took the Ice Heals he'd given her sure enough he hopped off and began to scamper back onto the path, looking back to Fembra and Faolan as though to tell them to hurry up.
It actually was a forest, wasn't it? With no settlements or outposts in sight - that she could see, anyway - Faolan was a little wary as they came right up to the edge of the forest and peered into it. She could still see the path winding through until it disappeared behind a particularly dense thicket, and as Faolan stood contemplating her next decision a Minccino peeked out from behind a tree, eying her and her pokemon before disappearing back where it came from. Perhaps no more battles today.
Looking to her two pokemon, who were probably quite drained and a little tired - though neither would express it outwardly - she deliberated over what to do for some time and, checking her pack for supplies, decided to go ahead and continue the journey through the forest. It was a little dark, but hopefully with two fire-types at her side it would be bearable. With Reddy scampering ahead, and Fembra bringing up the rear, she entered the thick grouping of trees and continued on her path through to the Weeping Forest.
