As usual, a particular someone that Jules wasn't going to mention, even to himself, was too busy to go with his own boyfriend to the annual Masquerade Ball.
But no, he wasn't going to dwell on that. There were bigger fish in the sea to fry! Wait, that mixed metaphor didn't quite feel right.
At any rate, he'd turned up dressed to the nines, for no reason other than he felt like being fancy tonight. Obviously.
He wore a charcoal grey dress pants and shirt, with a black vest. The vest had been added to recently, with a thick furry ruff sewn along the collar and plunging down the front, ending just before the vest's singular button.
He also wore black gloves -- not really accurate, but aesthetically pleasing -- with just large enough holes at the tips for his red-painted nails to show poke through. His shoes matched the color, though Jules hadn't quite been brave enough to go to a mass-invited dance with peep toe shoes. No, his dress shoes looked more like a typical man's black dress shoes, aside from the tips and heels, both painted red.
While not quite accurate to the pokémon, Jules' natural red hair was close enough for his own comfort -- and his hair was half the reason he chose this outfit, to begin with. So Jules augmented his hair, already past the shoulder, with black extensions, and a few red (ginger, actually, to match) attached to those. Not very sturdy, to be sure, but he only needed it to last the one night.
Finally, he had his mask. It wasn't elaborate, but it was well made, in a traditional Sinnoh style. Perhaps a little incongruous with the rest of his outfit's modern western appearance, but... well, to be blunt, Jules didn't think he could pull off a traditional SInnoh outfit, not the least of which because he had little to no real idea of the cultural mores that might surround it. But this mask had been such a find, in one of Pine's thrift stores. Jules had no idea how much it was really worth to a True Collector, a lot or a little -- but he adored it. Real wood, and finely painted, clearly by hand. It was the other half of why he'd chosen to model himself after zoroark for this year's ball.
And now, he just had to find some fine folks to spend the night with. ...Not in the way that sounded, probably, but he wasn't opposed to the idea, at least.
word count • 425 notes I think this thread is gonna take place after the maze thread, so while I'm using the egg sprite in the party down below, I'm just going to. not mention it in narration bc I want it to hatch in the maze, so long as I actually get the 5 posts necessary there. so I'll ask any others to please not bring up my pokémon either until I've posted in this thread with the pokémon fully hatched and all lmao
Jazz hadn't been entirely sure if he was going to the ball or not. It wasn't really his speed but the more he thought about it, the more he decided it would be worth it to try dressing up with perfect anonymity. Thus, his outfit was probably now what one would consider worthy of going to a ball in but well, Jazz wasn't the traditional ball attendee either. His Luxray outfit was... interesting to say the least of things. He had opted to go for a more... sexy look rather than dressy and froo froo like it seemed a lot of these other people were. Not that he cared that he'd missed some sort of memo.
The Luxray outfit consisted of a tight fitting black leather skirt with a blue furry trim on the bottom on top of blue tights that had a faint leopard skin print on them. For his shirt, a blue tank top could be seen under a black furry tube top that showed his midsection... which in this case meant the tank top which was form-fitting enough to show off all his muscles. Over this ensemble was a leather jacket that had three golden bands on each arm, simulating the bands on a luxray. His hair had been dyed black (temporarily) for the occasion and teased enough it looked like a mane (with the help of a black boa around his neck of course). He had braided the rest of his long hair and attached a golden star to the 'tail', letting it swish and sway as he walked. The finishing touch of course, was a set of blue Luxray ears affixed to his head and an elaborate, glittery, black masquerade mask with red glitter around the eyes. Jazz had even put in golden contacts for the occasion and had on black furry 'paws' in the form of leather gloves with black fur covering the cuff. Last but certainly not least were the shoes he'd picked out for the event, a pair of blue glitter loafers that he had taken some creative license with. They were probably the only thing remotely 'fancy' about the costume but hey, if he was going to be going to this thing, he was going to wear some nice, comfortable shoes. Besides, he thought he looked pretty hot so who cared what others thought at this point.
Needless to say, Jazz was quite impressed with this particular outfit and wanted to see who else noticed. That was when he noticed what... appeared to be a Zoroark(?) nearby. The mask was what drew him to the stranger in the first place though. How interesting. Mmm, maybe he could have some fun with this one~. "Well hellooo Mr. Zoroark~, that's quite some mask you've got there~," Jazz mused, smirking a bit as he snagged some punch. Mmmm, that was pretty good. Too bad it wasn't spiked.
Jules grinned at the person before him, and gave them an appraising glance in return. It took a moment before he realized they were dressed as a luxray, and his smile broadened.
"Hello yourself," Jules said, then hesitated. He couldn't tell what honorific this person would use just from appearance, neither at first glance nor after a moment of consideration, so he just addressed them as, "Charming Luxray." Jules winked, then realized the mask in question meant that wasn't really visible. Oh, well. "And, thank you! It was a lucky find, but it's really something, isn't it?"
Jules fingered the edge of the mask, considering whether it was against the 'rules,' as it were, to take masks off while on the dance floor. On one hand, the obscuring mist might mean that it would make no difference... but after being ejected from the maze, Jules didn't want to anger the ghosts here any further.
Instead, he nodded at his companion. "To be fair, that's also quite an outfit you have there, my feline friend~"
Jazz grinned when he saw the way the Zoroark's smile grew once he got a good look at his outfit. Hell yeah, he knew he looked amazing. He might have posed a little just to show off, beaming all the more when he was called 'charming'. Oooh, he liked this one already~. Was that a wink he spotted even? With masks such as these it was pretty hard to tell. "I should certainly say~. It has a certain... je ne sais quoi that completes the outfit. Quite the treasure, I must say~," Jazz mused, watching as the Zoroark fingered the mask. Was he already thinking about breaking anonymity? Awww, that wasn't too much fun. Not when he'd put so much time and effort in making sure this outfit was purrrfect.
When the stranger didn't take it off and instead turned their attention back to Jazz, he brightened quite a bit. Twirling briefly, Jazz posed again and winked (something a little easier to see due to the nature of his mask). "Thank you~. I thought I'd try something a little more daring this event~. Glad to see it's appreciated," Jazz mused, twirling his 'tail' a little to mimic the swish of a natural tail, "Luxray happens to be my favorite pokemon. It was a no brainer~. I just made some creative adjustments is all~." Those adjustments being the skirt among other things. Kovu would've rolled his eyes if he'd seen this but hey, Jazz was having fun, felt great, and wouldn't let even imagined haters get him down.
Jules laughed at the compliment, and said, "You're terrible. Flattery will get you everywhere, though." He punctuated his words with a light tap to the nose of the luxray's mask.
Once they talked a bit about their own costume, Jules responded, "Well, it certainly does suit you." Luxray always reminded Jules of Gryphon, and the thought of his stuffy ass in this... punk, gay bar / clubbing outfit was... a funny thought, but for another time. Jules brought his attention back to the luxray in front of him, and said, "It's a very good costume. Zoroark isn't my favorite, by any means, but this mask was a lucky find, and I liked it enough to build the outfit around it." Jules took the opportunity to get himself a glass of punch too, having only just noticed they were next to the refreshments table. "I prefer fossils and dragons, myself. Which means it's probably wise that I don't intend to actually own many pokémon, heh."
Jazz laughed along with the Zoroark and grinned brightly, chuckling some when his 'nose' was tapped. "It's not so terrible if it's true now is it~?" he mused, chuckling once again before the compliment was returned and he talked about his costume this time, "Why thank you~," Jazz hummed, his tone a sing song voice as he twirled again. Maybe he was showing off a little too much but hey, he was damn proud of his costume and wasn't going to turn down a compliment.
"Hey now, don't be like that. Zoroark can be anything they want to be. And now~, so can you," Jazz mused, tapping the Zoroark's nose in turn, "Still, it's a fabulous costume, darling~. You did a good job putting it together. C'est magnifique~!" he continued, grinning brightly again before sipping some of his punch. The bit about fossils and dragons were interesting, though it would be difficult to find certainly.
"Mmm, you're right about that~. I was fortunate enough to find a few fossils in the last region I was in, but there aren't many around. Would definitely be a fun adventure though, searching for fossils." Jazz agreed, "Can't say I really have a type per say. Unless you would count 'cool' as a type? Mmm, it really just depends on the interaction I guess. If the pokemon crosses my path, I won't pass up a good battle. Sometimes they want to come, sometimes they don't." Jazz continued, shrugging a little before finishing the rest of his drink.
"Enough about that, how about we dance~," Jazz grinned, holding out a hand to the Zoroark. He wasn't much of a dancer but hey, it could be fun.
"I actually just applied for my Explorer's license," Jules said as the luxray finished his drink. "So, yes, I hope so."
After he commented, the luxray asked to dance -- and, well, they were at a ball. "Of course, ma cherie," Jules said brightly and took the offered hand. "I'm-- not very good, though, so you'll likely have to lead," he added while rubbing his neck sheepishly.
Jazz's smile grew when he heard the bit about the explorer license. "Really? Sweet, I'm a ranger actually so maybe we could team up sometime~," he mused, grinning more at the prospect. At least before he got bored of boring conversation and asked the Zoroark to dance. It was really easy to get them to agree to dance but... that left one little problem. Jazz didn't exactly know the first thing about dancing but how hard could it be? It was just moving to some music, right?
Then the Zoroark stated that he didn't know how to dance but he certainly enjoyed being referred to as ma cherie~. While most might have been daunted at the prospect of making a fool of themselves on the dance floor, it just made Jazz laugh. Well, this night was supposed to be full of different experiences and this could either be a disaster or a wonderful time. Taking the Zoroark's hand, Jazz led him onto the dance floor, "Well that makes two of us but how hard can it be~," Jazz laughed, "The point is not to have fun, not worry about what the haters are gonna think. Cuz darling~, haters gonna hate, but we don't have to listen cuz we're fabulous~," he continued, winking again before spinning and bowing with a flourish.
Stepping onto the dance floor, Jazz put an arm around the Zoroark's waist, drawing them maaaybe a little closer than absolutely necessary, but what the hell. His other hand took the Zoroark's opposite hand. With that, he started to try and lead, emphasis on try. Stepping forward, Jazz shifted his weight forward to hopefully give some clues as to what he was going to do next. "See? Dancing isn't so bad~," Jazz mused, attempting to try and spin the Zoroark. Ehh, maybe ballroom dancing was a bad idea to attempt. If this failed he'd just... dance like he was clubbing and who the hell cared who looked at him strangely.

Jules chuckled, "True enough!" and followed Jazz onto the dance floor.

The luxray hugged Jules close, and he wasn't complaining. He looked up into the eyes behind the luxray mask, a pretty green, and while the pair might not have been in time with the music, Jules managed to at least be mostly in sync with his dancing partner.
"See? Dancing isn't so bad~," the luxray said, and Jules couldn't help but nod along.

"Oui, it's--" at which point Jules tripped over his own feet. Thankfully, he fell forward, into the luxray's arms. Less thankfully, as he fell forward his head collided with his dance partner's jaw.
Jazz grinned when the Zoroark laughed with him and then got up close and personal. He started out slow at least to attempt to get a feel for the dance he was watching others do. Maybe it was a bit clumsy, but Jazz was going to give it his best shot at any rate. Of course his big mouth had to go and jinx it. The instant he'd said it wasn't so bad, the Zoroark tripped forward into his arms.

There was only a split second before Zoroark's head was about to collide into him but Jazz just barely managed to avoid getting further damaged. Thankfully, he was able to quickly readjust and pull the Zoroark into a dip instead. "Oh, darling~," Jazz mused, chuckling softly, "Not falling for me already are you~?" A wink would be given thereafter before he righted the Zoroark again, releasing him and instead opting to dance next to him. Ballroom dancing was clearly not his style but clubbing was. He'd just... improvise, yeah.
Just then, a more upbeat song came on and Jazz chuckled, taking the Zoroark's hands to spin both of them around. "C'mon, hot stuff~, just move to the music. 's not that hard to have fun~," Jazz teased, letting go again and spinning, only to raise his hands in the air and move his hips to the beat rather close to the Zoroark. So what if his club dancing wasn't exactly suitable for this environment. Well, if he had to put a name to the style it was probably closest to hip hop but what the hell. Jazz was here to have fun and that didn't include caring about what anyone else thought. Besides, he got to show off and have fun and maybe the Zoroark could mimic him easily enough, who knew.
