Birch City was in full swing of Autumn, complete with the crispy leaves and the scent of ripe spiced apples in the air. Aster was on her way to the Botanical Gardens; since she was in town for the so-called Halloween party and maze event, she figured it would be good to visit this place as well. Her bag was particularly heavy today, containing three different Pokemon eggs that she wanted to hatch. Two of them belonged to her Mareep, Clover, but the other was given to her as a gift, shipped in the mail all the way from home in Johto. Her moms had apparently thought she'd want whatever was inside, which she appreciated to death.
She approached the ornate glass doors, appreciating the greenery from outside, and then stepped into the humid, almost steamy air. Instantly, the fragrances and flowers and green filled her senses with calm and joy. Uncurling from her head, Ivy took in the scents as well, stretching out her little arms and yawning as she stood up. A pleased noise told Aster that Ivy was just as happy to be here as she was, and she decided to also let her Bulbasaur out to enjoy the warmth and smells. The big bulb-dino came out with a cry of questioning, but quickly realized they were somewhere warm and green and gave Aster a bump on the leg with his head, pleased with the location.
"Alright, alright. We gotta stick together, Rafflesia, don't wander off. Ivy, you stay up there, I won't be able t' find ya if ya get into th' foliage." Her Pokemon agreed, and the three of them moved to begin walking one of the paths to admire the plants.
Gardens. Greer was used to tropics, so she loved seeing greenhouses and such. It was pretty interesting to her, the plants grown inside like that. Deciding to check out the Botanical Gardens here in Birch, she had Maura the Cubone on her shoulder and the rest of her team in their Pokeballs. She arrived soon after Aster did and made her way in not far behind the blond.
Greer actually followed suit and released her Cherubi, Rabbie. The grass-type seemed delighted by the humid air. "C'mere, Rab. Traveling on my shoulder will be easier." The fruit-like Pokemon agreed and went to jump onto the redhead's shoulder when she knelt down. Maura shifted slightly, watching and then looking up toward Aster. Once Greer had righted herself, she smiled and walked a step faster to catch up a little. "This is gorgeous, huh? They must put some work into this place." Start with small talk. Let's see where it gets her.

Aster was mildly surprised that someone had followed in right after her, but this was a public building, after all, and that was fine. "Oh, yeah, f'sure! I've never seen a lot o' these plants before, but I can tell you, plant care ain't as easy as people make it out t' be!" She gave Ivy a scratch under the chin, earning a closed-eye grin from the tiny Pokemon.
"Berries an' Apricorns are the easiest, in my opinion, but then there's all kinds o' other plants out there that take more care an' are way less hardy. Some o' the fruiting plants practically take care o' themselves! But then ya got stuff that's not native t' the area, like... these over here!" She gently tugged a big leaf out of the foliage to show it off, careful not to snap it off of its vine. "These are actually grown out in Johto, they used to be wild all 'round our property! But here, the climate's different, th' humidity, everything.. so t' get it t' grow here, ya gotta really pamper it."
Rafflesia the Bulbasaur approached, having not wandered too far, and nudged Aster's leg, pointing with a vine at a plant with gorgeous red flowers centered by long yellow stamens. "Those're hibiscus flowers, Raff. They're tropical, probably.. from Hoenn, I'd guess."
Greer looked very surprised by all the information given. She hadn't expected a lesson on the plants, but was certainly pleasantly caught off guard. "I never realized," Greer admitted, giving an impressed expression to Aster. "I'm Greer, by the way. You seem very knowledgeable about plants. Is it kind of a lifelong interest you've had or a new hobby that you've done a lot of research on?"
Aster had mentioned plants near her home as a child, but that didn't mean she'd taken an interest early on. Looking over to the Bulbasaur, which prompted even more information, Greer smiled and gave a careful look to the hibiscus. Those were the types of plants she was used to. Vibrant, tropical, in-your-face beauty.
"Is it possible--or more importantly, likely--that these plants could somehow get out of the greenhouse and outgrow some of the native plants? I mean, obviously... I'm not asking if the plant can up and leave. These don't appear to be Pokemon, after all. I mean, like... seeds or roots."

"My name's Aster, good t' meet ya!" She warmly offered to shake Greer's hand. This person was.. really pretty, if Aster thought about it. She pushed the thoughts away and listened, idly crouching down to give Rafflesia a good scratch behind the head. The Bulbasaur leaned into the attention, giving happy little burbles in return.
"Huh.. Never thought about that! Honestly, ahm not sure. My family's got a farm back home, jus' a regular one that only grows crops from spring to maybe mid-autumn, dependin' on the whim of the frosts, but we never had a greenhouse. I'd guess they'd have some measures in place t' prevent them gettin' out? Like, the structure might be built further into th' ground than just sittin' on it flat. But I s'pose seeds could get stuck on people or Pokemon visiting and get out that way.." Aster seemed deep in thought about this concept. "Plants are pretty determined t' spread, so I wouldn't put it past 'em. We used t' get weeds in every flowerbed, every vegetable patch, every year, no matter how of'n we plucked 'em or what methods we used t' discourage 'em. Wildflowers too."
The handshake was returned with a friendly smile. So she was definitely interested in plants and such from a young age. Or, well, maybe not interested, per se, but knowledgeable and invested. As she offered what answer she could, Greer listened and nodded along as the blond made good sense. A smile crossed the redhead's face and she reached up to idly rub the leaf of her Cherubi.
"Most of these are quite pretty so it wouldn't be that horrible if some of them got out. Let's just hope they don't take over Arciel, huh?" Chuckling at her own dumb joke, she took a deep breath of the humid air. Plants smelled so great. The freshness in the air... "Are you still as hardworking as you were when you were younger? Or was that the like... 'royal we' sort of deal just talking about your family in general, not specifically including or excluding you?"

"Oh yeah! O' course! I run a farm over in Fuji, right now we're waitin' on a decent-lookin' Apricorn harvest. We'll get some berries goin' before too much longer, since they're hardy enough t' handle winter unlike most other crops. The Apricorns're real tough too, but we don't need 'em as much as the berries." She laughed. "Mah Pokemon help out a lot, too, but I gotta do the plantin' and harvestin' and waterin' mostly by myself so it gets done right. Mah Mudkip overwaters a lot, ah gotta teach 'er to slow down an' watch what she's doin' more."
Aster smiled at Greer and asked, "So, what do you do fer a livin'?"
Rafflesia sneakily plucked a hibiscus flower from the plant while Aster was distracted, hiding it nestled beneath his bulb, to present to someone later. Ivy was fast asleep on her trainer's head, comfortable in the warm humidity of the greenhouse setting.
Apricorns! She'd actually heard of people in the past making Pokeballs out of them but wasn't sure if that was still common practice. Or... in practice at all, really. A laugh escaped her as Aster talked about her Mudkip overwatering the plants. It sounded like the Pokemon was just really eager to help and since she liked a lot of water, she probably figured the plants would, too!
'So, what do you do fer a livin'?'
Ah, what a question. "Just the odd job here and there, mostly. I've never really settled on something I truly love enough to... do all the time, you know? You're really lucky to have found the thing you're happy doing." Although Greer was telling the truth, she wasn't telling the whole truth. Some of those odd jobs were a little on the unsavory side at times.
Rabbie hopped from his trainer's shoulder and went over to Rafflesia, smiling and greeting the other grass-type. He looked at the flowers too, appreciating them and trying not to draw attention to the Bulbasaur's hidden present.

"Ah see.. Yeah, I've loved growin' plants an' takin' care of Pokemon my whole life! I am pretty lucky." Aster chuckled, leading the way further in to the gardens and admiring the plants as she walked. "Ah can't imagine life any other way. Can't see nothin' else I'd want t' do. An' anyway, someone's gotta grow the food an' the Berries an' raise the Pokemon an' animals fer wool an' milk an' other products, may as well be someone who likes the work, eh?"
She watched the Cherubi talk to her Bulbasaur. She'd never seen the Pokemon before, and it resembled a pair of cherries and.. yes, that delightful floral scent was coming from it. She did want to collect Pokemon that could produce good perfume when she had time, and this Pokemon seemed like a decent place to start, maybe. "Who's this little guy? They smell great!" she exclaimed. "Where'd ya get 'em?"
Rafflesia greeted the Cherubi and offered a vine like he was offering to shake hands, tucking the flower further under his bulb and following along with the people.
"You're very fortunate," Greer reiterated with a nod and a smile. Of course, the blond was right. Without people that loved doing that, where would everyone else be? Maybe she'd even try farming later. It sounded like it could certainly be interesting. Turning her attention to the Pokemon, she chuckled. "Oh, him? He's a Cherubi. From what I hear, that tinier second body--head?--is edible, but... I don't think I'd ever want to try it. His name is Rabbie."
There was a pause as Greer simply watched her Pokemon extended a leaf to shake the Bulbasaur's vine and beamed at Raff. He moved along with the other grass-type happily and Greer took a deep breath. "I got him from my home region. I'm sure there are more like him in Arciel." She still wasn't quite ready to talk fully about where Rabbie had come from, she'd decided. "Is there anything you can tell me about grass-type Pokemon? I mean, any tips?"

"Oh, well! I only have a few s'far, but it seems like they work a lot like plants; while you can feed 'em regular food, it helps t' make sure they get plenty o' water an' good strong sunlight. My Rafflesia here likes partial sun best; I think th' species originated in jungles, so they'd only get partial sun unless they grew real tall or near the edges o' the trees an' vines an' stuff. My Snivy loves full sun an' takes tons of naps, an' my Oddish seems to be real energetic towards evenin'time an' doesn't like too much sun either."
She patted Rafflesia on the head, not noticing the stolen flower on the other side of his bulb. "He's been gettin' bigger, I think he might be near ready to evolve now, but ahm not sure. I've only been raisin' Pokemon myself since I came t' Arciel, my parents raised all our farm Mareep themselves an' I mostly helped out with the weedin'."
Aster stepped into a patch of bright sunlight, squinting up at the ceiling, and stretched her arms up above her head leisurely. "I like a good patch of sun, too, o'course, but ahm not a plant. The warmth makes me sleepy, not energetic n' rarin' t' go."
Greer listened, nodding along with the information and then grinned. "So far, Rabbie is my only grass type. He's a good little one. If my observations are anything to go off of, he likes a lot of sun." She looked at the Pokemon she was talking about and smiled a little forlornly before refocusing on Aster. Looking up to the sunlight shining into the greenhouse and warming it, she closed her eyes and breathed in.
"I'm used to pretty warm temperatures, but frequent rain. It's kind of nice here, though it's getting pretty cold with winter coming." She shivered at the thought, just glad it hadn't gone to freezing temperatures and snow already. Greer wasn't sure she was ready for that kind of weather yet. "What other kinds of Pokemon do you have? I also have an Aron and a Glaceon." Maura made a small noise from her perch on the redhead's shoulder still, not wanting to be forgotten in this talk of what kind of Pokemon companions Greer had.

Aster smiled sunnily at Greer. "Yeah, Johto mostly had pretty mild weather, great for farmin'! Here, I won't be able t' grow so many regular plants an' flowers as it gets too cold, but Berries an' Apricorns are so hardy they won't mind a bit." She realized she was rambling and stopped before giving even more lecture, about how the biggest threat to Berry crops were hungry wild Pokemon and how she guarded the farm against them with her Pokemon..
"I've got quite a few Pokemon now, I've got a Mudkip an' a Mareep, an Oddish, another Bulbasaur like Raff, it's actually his daughter, heh. I got this big ol' Scizor outta nowhere one day, he's pretty strong! An' a Pidgey, I caught him out in the cold one day." She thought again. "Oh! An' my Murkrow, Iris! She's pretty great, ahm hopin' she'll be able t' keep other Murkrow offa my crops, 'specially when she evolves." She patted Ivy on the head, who shifted slightly but remained curled up asleep.
"What's yer favorite type? I'm bettin' ya can guess mine, heh.."
Johto. Greer nodded along, wondering if 'mild' meant more or less neutral or warm like she was used to. Didn't matter, though. All that really mattered was the comparison to Arciel. "I hear it does get... really cold. Berries and Apricorns are incredible, huh?" It was a really impressive thought and the redhead considered that there was probably less of other foods in the winter months, which meant wild Berry bushes would probably be picked bare most of the time but also that any that were grown on farms would have to fend off quite a bit more wild Pokemon too.
Grinning at Aster's list of Pokemon, she looked over to the Bulbasaur and smiled. A daughter, wow! Greer hadn't really thought about breeding before. Maybe she'd look into that some more with her Pokemon later. Upon being asked what her favorite type was, though, she looked a little surprised by the question. Thinking about it, she hummed and shrugged helplessly, "I don't really think I have a favorite. I like some of the less... desireable, I guess? Like Steel and Poison. Ice types are pretty neat, too! Hadn't really seen any before since I didn't live near or visit any of the areas that tended to have them back home. I do really love Maura here, though I'm not so sure if I'd say her typing is my favorite, exactly."
