Senara's team was starting to look like it was made by a person who had only ever read about the Pokemon in it, and had completely (and wrongly) guessed their sizes based on random number generation. Between the Mantine as long as a car and the Snorlax smaller than even she was, things were looking a little like a joke. However, there was one thing that neither Polochon the Snorlax nor Crepe the Mantine had to worry about: for their weird sizes, they were still the stronger members of her little squad. Meanwhile, Baby Girl, the completely normal-sized Sableye was starting to feel out-leveled by her compatriots. Senara couldn't read her mind, but the little nugget had a habit of eating more of her jewelry when she was in a bad mood, and nothing had changed but the addition of Polochon and Crepe. And a couple eggs, but those were still just eggs.
(Said eggs were sitting back at home, tucked under a soft, warm blanket. She didn't want to risk getting jostled around and harming them while training, no sir.)
So she'd offered her darling Baby Girl a trip to the local training facility to build her up. Senara tried to come in at a time they weren't going to be surrounded by people--the middle of the week at the middle of the day felt like a good bet, even if it was earlier than she would have preferred. She booked a room with half of it as a pool or water so she could let Crepe out to chill--he was going to be more help than Polochon, who dealt no damage to Baby Girl's ghost typing with her attacks. She then undid her jacket and let her sweet little Sableye drop to the ground, chittering irritably.
"Don't give me that attitude, you've been grumpy about your level all week!" Senara put her coat up on a hook by the door, dusting off the short plaid dress she'd picked out for the day. Some bright purple fur was still stuck to it but, eh, that was one of the trials of Pokemon care: shedding. "And it's not fair for you to just sit there wailing on Polochon. Even if he is a brat. If you want to be stronger, we're not going to cheese it!"
Baby Girl growled between her teeth, stomping a paw beneath her. Crepe dipped lower in the water so only his eyes and "horns" stood out, looking, as usual, concerned.
Senara sighed and stepped over to stand behind Baby Girl, and put her hands under the little purple fluffs that were her ears. "Réjouis-toi, petite fille. We'll make sure you will get stronger! I'm won't leave you behind for the rest of the team, I promise."
Baby Girl lowered her gem-cut eyes from Senara's face, and turned her head to nip very gently at her fingers. Senara giggled and took her hands back, standing to full height, and stepping back a slightly safer distance. Crepe floated a little higher so his mouth was visible from outside the pool. "Are we ready?" Both Pokemon nodded--or, well, Crepe moved up and down in the water, as he didn't have a visible neck to bend.
"Good. Petite fille, grattez-le! Crepe, use Bubble Beam!"
At once, Baby Girl lunged forward, claws extended and ready to grapple with Crepe's very wide face and start scratching. Crepe opened his mouth as she got closer. Just before she reached the pool's edge a blur of numerous little bubbles burst from his mouth, and Baby Girl ran right into all of them. They popped against her fun and gems, slowing her advance, and she hissed aloud and hopped back rather than continue to charge. Senara clicked her tongue behind her teeth. "Alright, that...didn't work. Baby, why didn't you try to dodge that?" The Sableye turned and snapped her teeth in reply. Senara's brow furrowed. "...I don't care if your hit wouldn't have landed. You didn't get it anyway, and you're hurt now. That's two bad things and not a single good. Come back."
Baby Girl growled again and returned to her starting position. Senara looked her over.
Sableye aren't very fast, but their special defense is nothing to sneeze at...even at his level, Crepe didn't do nearly so much damage as he could have from that attack. But her speed is already really bad without taking a hit that slows her...
"Recover, Baby Girl. Then try again. Crepe, just keep doing what you're doing."
A small number of white lights surrounded Baby Girl for a moment, and the faint marks from the Bubble Beam attack faded away to nothing. She took a step back, claws not doing anything nice to the wooden flooring, then rushed forward again. Crepe drew in a mouthful of water and started to rise up--Baby Girl didn't slow her gang-rush forward.
"Allez, allez, tu sais que tu n'es pas assez rapide pour frapper en premier...!"
Like before, the flurry of bubbles sprayed out aimed at the oncoming Sableye. She tried, she really did, to dodge to the side, but her speed was already decreased. All she managed to do was avoid the worst of the attack, but a few bubbles still grazed her paw. Senara still let out a whoop of excitement. "Bonne dodge! Maintenant frappe le!" As told, Baby Girl swung her claws right for the Mantine's exposed face outside the water. He groaned in discomfort as her nails found purchase thrice in his cheek.
She then leaped back and grinned a wide, pointy, confident grin at her teammate. Crepe lowered his head and blew much more harmless, halfhearted bubbles in response.
"Good hit, Baby Girl! Crepe, use Roost." As Senara stepped up to check on the wound on Baby Girl's paw, Crepe glowed in the same manner as the Sableye had before, and the scratch marks on his cheek vanished. Senara gently held the injured paw between her hands. "Still got hit a little, but that was a well-timed dodge. And you still got him! I know it wasn't as strong as it could've been with both hands but that's something, yeah?"
While not a purr, not quite, Baby Girl made a much more pleased rumble in her throat, and Senara chuckled in response. "Yes, yes, don't get a swelled head! We're only just starting." Once more she stepped back, this time staying between them both, but far back enough to avoid any damage. "Let's do a couple more rounds, then we'll see if we can find another Pokemon around here to spar with for real. Ready? Charge-le!"
Baby Girl had worn out the amount of uses she could use Recover, and so had Crepe on his uses of Roost. Exhausted both physically and in their healing abilities, Senara was content with letting them take a break. She leaned against the wooden wall from where she sat, one foot dipping into the pool of water Crepe was in and the other bent toward her chin, with her precious Baby Girl seated on her lap, breathing slowly in and out.
"You both did super good. Absolument fantastique." She chuckled, brushing her fingers under Baby Girl's chin and listening to the not-quite-a-purr that came from her throat. She extended her other arm to give Crepe's "horn" a similar brush, but he shied away after a moment and hid his face in the pool. She could still see his smile through the clear water. "Aww. La mignonne..."
Pulling her hands away from her Pokemon she reached into the pocket of her skirt, pulling out a little hard candy wrapped in a bright blue wrapper. "Here, Crepe, since you have been helping Baby Girl so much, you can have a sweet." She undid the wrapper and held it out. Crepe looked up from the water, still flustered, but slowly rose back up in all his ridiculously large glory. When he placed his mouth on her hand to take the candy she could have sworn that, if he wanted to, he could have eaten her whole arm. Yikes. But luckily the largest member of her team was also her most sweet and kind and gentle.
Funny, considering, you know, me. And Baby Girl. And Polochon.
Yikes I attract a very specific sort of Pokemon, don't I.
Crepe slipped back further into the pool as he ate the Rare Candy up. Senara wasn't sure why he was so accepting being used as a literal punching bag, but at least he was enjoying his reward. Baby Girl sniffed at the discarded wrapper and then tilted her head up to click her teeth at Senara. Senara snickered and tucked the wrapper away. "No. I have more, but I am not giving one to you. You're going to keep going the old fashioned way!" Baby Girl hissed. "Oh, hush. I told you I wasn't going to cheese this. Si vous êtes tellement en colère que vous mangerez une partie de ma collection à ce sujet, cela doit vouloir dire beaucoup pour vous." She wrapped an arm around the Sableye's tiny waist and squeezed her close to her torso. "And if that's the case, then we're doing it the right way. Maybe at the end of it, we can go out and find you a different sort of treat."
Baby Girl's ears perked straight up at that, and her smile widened impossibly large for the size of her head. It was a little creepy to behold, if one wasn't accustomed to it. Senara only saw the smile of a sweet little creature whom she dearly, dearly loved.
A sweet little devious creature.
"You let me know when you're rested and ready to find a new training partner, alright?"

"Okay, my leg is falling asleep. Uppsie-daisy, Baby." Senara let out an "oof" and started to pull herself up from where she'd been sitting for the last couple of minutes, and Baby Girl hopped away a foot or so, making sounds that she could have sworn sounded like snickering. Senara stuck her tongue out at her. "Hush, we can't all be semi-corporeal."
Once on her feet she stretched her arms high over her head and wiggled until she heard her spine pop. All those days hunched over rocks in the mines or on her desk were the bane of her posture and spine health. She pulled out Crepe's pokeball and called him to it, his form vanishing in a beam of red light before she tucked the ball back into her purse. "Trouvons un combattant plus terrestre." She bent down, picking up Baby Girl and placing her on her shoulder as they left the protection of the main room. The halls were still mostly empty at this time of day, which she preferred, but how many Pokemon were here when it was so quiet? That might be a problem. She peeked into the wide open windows to the grass outside, looking for rustling or shadows moving among it.
What she saw instead made her blood go ice, ice cold, then boiling lava hot.
A teensy little Spritzee was bouncing too and fro among the brush, its stupid pink fluff soft and shiny in the mid-day sun. It ugly face was so cheerful as it moved from shrub to shrub, looking for something--probably a snack to stuff in its stupid, gross beak-thing...
Senara hated Fairy-type Pokemon. If she could undo their whole existence she would. If she had been born somewhere they hadn't been discovered yet, like Kanto or Johto, her life would have been so much better! But the fates had been cruel, and she'd been raised in the Fairy Capitol of Kalos, Laverre City. Over-exposure only made her loathing worse. Between that and having a Dark type as her starter when all her "friends" were getting their bright-pink disgustingly saccharine Fairies for theirs...defeat after defeat did nothing to warm her to the pretty little bastards. So, yes, just the sight of one was enough to ruin the day. Baby Girl didn't seem to share her immediate hatred, simply looking out while leaning on Senara's head, gem eyes watching the flying cotton-ball without the vitriol her master held. Types were types, weakness was weakness.
Polochon could hold a grudge for how he'd been taken out, but Baby Girl didn't care.
The idea of asking that thing to fight made Senara ill.
But...at the same time, beating it would feel so wonderfully cathartic.
"Heeeey~ Little Spritzee~" She called out from the window, waving a hand and wearing her sweetest, friendliest smile that she reserved for when she was absolutely furious. The Spritzee looked up from its perch on a weed and trilled at her in greetings. Gross. "Would you like to fight me and my partner, one v. one? I'll heal you when we're done!"
The Spritzee trilled again and fluttered over to the window, hopping up on the pane and trying to nuzzle Senara's hand like it was thanking her for the opportunity. She wanted to throw it into the wall. "Thank you! Petite fille, devant moi. Brisons cette petite garce."
Baby Girl hopped from her master's shoulder and the Spritzee fluttered a few feet away, puffing its feathers up in preparation. Senara strode to stand behind Baby Girl, eyes narrowing as her smile stayed frozen in place. At least it was a slow Fairy type. Even Baby Girl would be able to beat it to the first punch. "Grattez-la, ma chérie." Baby Girl once again lunged forward with her claws extended, and the Spritzee tried to flutter away but just wasn't fast enough. The attack raked across her beak and feathers and knocked her to the side, but didn't do enough damage. It was stronger than it looked.
As Baby Girl's attack landed, the Spritzee was knocked back, but didn't fall. Instead the little bundle of pink began to fluff itself up to look ever so slightly bigger, before a rush of sparkling wind came up from behind her and struck Baby Girl dead-on. The Fairy Wind was exactly the sort of attack that a Dark type such as the poor Sableye couldn't take. She hissed aloud and leaped away but the damage was done, and she was badly hurt. Senara swore audibly and her hand twitched towards her purse on pure instinct. Recall.
Recall her. Recall her now! Before she loses again!!
Her teeth ground together hard enough she could hear it.
I hate them. I hate them. Just because she's different, she's weaker?! Just because she isn't some sweet pink pile of merde de cheval she's inferior?! We're inferior?!
I HATE THIS!!
"Récupérer!!" She barked out her command without pausing to think, then immediately followed it up with another, "Utilisez leer! Ensuite, optez pour une autre égratignure!"
Baby Girl shook her head, teeth bared in a manner not unlike her master, and multitude of glowing lights appeared around her, healing a good amount--but not enough to fully rid her of it--of the damage done. Spritzee shook twice and a sweet smell filled the hall, but it didn't deter Baby Girl as she met the little cretin's eyes with her own. For only a moment the little Fairy weakling looked actually frightened, rather than blissfully unaware of how much its opponents actually hated it. Perhaps the look it found in Baby Girl's eyes of crystal was just that hateful. Senara would have approved could she see it.
It began puffing itself up again, preparing another Fairy Wind. Senara bit her lip.
Dodge it, dodge it, come on we've been practicing this shit!
...crap, it used Sweet Scent, can she even--
Baby Girl lunged in again, trying this time to come at the Spritzee from the side to avoid the oncoming gale of shimmer, but, as Senara had feared, her evasive abilities weren't up to their full potential. The burst of wind raked against her side and Senara just knew her health had taken a heavy hit, but all the same, she still moved in and landed both paws directly into the Fairy brat's face, dragging her claws over her and her decreased defenses. The blow was enough. The Spritzee leaped back, chirping much angrier than it had been at the start, and then flew for the window and disappeared into the grass.
Baby Girl stood on her feet, triumphantly grinning from ear to ear, then...fainted.
Senara managed to run up and catch her before she hit the ground--no small feat, with how close she already was to it--and scoop her precious Pokemon up in her arms tight.
"...tu as fait tellement bien, tellement bien, petite fille..." she mumbled into Baby Girl's fur, keeping her pressed right into the crook of her neck, "Nous les aurons la prochaine fois. Et chaque fois après. Je promets." The Sableye didn't respond, having passed out from exhaustion, and she wasn't likely to wake up until she got some healing. Senara pulled out her Pokeball--decorated with purple and red rhinestones--and returned her to it.
