It had been a while since Jazz had opted to go on a journey. Now he wondered why he'd waited so long. Nevermind he'd been assigned to patrol Route 2 that day. With how quiet it was lately, Jazz thought it unlikely that there would be any sign of trouble. Besides, who was going to mess with him when he had a Lucario out? With both of them using aura sight, he knew that not much else was going to get past them. Besides, it would give him a chance to practice his aura reinforcement some. A Lucario was the perfect training partner after all.
"Ya ready for this, Pup?" Jazz asked, already wondering if this was a good idea. It was Pup that had suggested she test out Jazz's reinforcement progress to begin with. But... using Quick Attack to do it seemed a little extreme. Still, he'd always learned better by actually practicing it when he needed it. Perhaps there was some merit to this. Pup looked amused, was Jazz actually scared that they would hurt him? Really now, if he was using his aura reinforcement the right way, there was no need to worry. This was just training for both of them in a way.

There's been a new shipment of odd gears and gizmos in one of the old part stores in Cedar, which had drawn Derby out of her hut of a room for a few moments. She had a plan, afterall! And hopefully on her way back from Cedar she could analyse further how Bender's new leg held up in combat. Bender, who had a small backpack strapped to him to carry a few nuts and bolts that he'd picked out was more than eager for battling and stumbling around the route! Curious, and ready to get going he let out a series of cries, which Derby met with a gruff laugh.
"You sure are hyped, hm Bend?" that was met with another chitter, as the pokemon began forwards down the route. Derby could never get tired of the little munchkins can-do attitude, it's a wonder he even got in such a situation to lose his leg in the first place. Hands clutching her toolkit by her side, which swung with each step she made, her eyes briefly took catalogue of the bargains she got- cheap wires, new fuel, a bunch of offcuts from smoe of the locals new projects- and a few pipes too! Really, it was a dream and a half- somethin that could make her pop proud.
As she continued walking, Bender seemed to notice something up ahead and let out an alerting Yip, pulling Derby's attention away from the toolkit as she came to notice a green-haired stranger. "Oi!" Derby let out a loud yell, moving to raise her free hand upwards, as if to draw the stranger closer. Conversation with strangers, at the very least, was easy for Derby. Like talking to a new client.. "Pretty dead out here today, huh? You on an errand or sumthin'?"

Jazz had just tried to reinforce his arms to block the incoming attack from Pup when someone distracted him. Looking over in the direction of the newcomer, Jazz barely had enough time to block the punch with a hiss. Fuck that hurt. But well, at least his arms were broken? Or... Pup was growling at him for getting distracted and had gone easy on him... heh... yeah. "Sorry, Pup... guess we'll have to wait til later," Jazz murmured sheepishly, smiling a little easier when the Lucario agreed.
Sighing softly, Jazz turned and looked at the newcomer that had interrupted their training session. Guess he needed to actually start patrolling, heh. "Nah, not really? I mean, we're out patrolling but don't let me stop you~," Jazz chimed, shrugging a bit before pulling out a pokeball to release a rather large Druddigon. Riding Ryuu would be faster than walking all the way to the next town at any rate.
Ryuu was however taking a nap upon being released and would be hard pressed to stand. Sigh, well, it looked like they weren't going anywhere anytime soon. Too bad Willow wasn't quite big enough to ride even as big for the species as the Skiddo was. Jazz would have to evolve her before he'd be able to do so without looking like a clumsy Wooloo buster. "C'mon, Ryuu... we need to get to the next town..."" Jazz complained, trying to pick up the large Druddigon. This was getting nowhere fast...
Oh damn, they were sparring! Derby tilted her head as the stranger began speaking to her, shifting how she stood with a curious glint in her eyes- patrollin'? Oh! Stranger was a ranger! As the stranger told her to keep going on her way she shrugged, pausing however when their dragon pokemon was released- oh da- nah he was napping. Derby snorted, amused by the scene before her. She watched them struggling for a few seconds then moved closer, despite what they said earlier. "Need some help?" Bender was right on her heels and moved to nudge the asleep pokemon with his metal food, glancing to Derby for a moment before letting out a soft cry. Well, looked like even if he said no she was kinda stuck with helpin', couldn't say no to her darling Bends. "It'll prolly be easier if we try lift him together, if you aren't gonna chuck him back in his ball- and before ya say no i've had over 8 years experience with heavy equiptment so..." She clicked her tongue and smirked at the stranger. Bender would be able to handle her bags of cogs and nuts.
Jazz sighed as he tried to figure out exactly how to get Ryuu to help him out. Maybe some poketreats would help? It was worth a shot at any rate. Did he have any left? Digging through his pockets, Jazz found a couple of treats left after all and smirked. Yep, that had Ryuu's attention alright. Sweet~. That was a good thing. Oh, and the stranger was talking to them again, offering help. Seemed Ryuu only barely stirred when nudged by Bender. At least, that was before he smelled the treats and opened an eye in interest.
"Thanks, but I think I got it. Ryuu's a good boy, just needed some incentive~," Jazz mused, giving the good Druddigon some pats when he did finally stand up for the treats. "If you wanted to stick around, I could let Willow, my Skiddo, give you a ride. She's a bit too small for me still but I don't think you'd have a problem~," Jazz mused, scratching Ryuu under his chin which seemed to make the Druddigon purr softly. It was cute, really, but he should probably get going before it got much later.
Pup looked a little relieved that Ryuu was cooperating and bent to thank Bender, holding her paw out for a high five of sorts. It might not have been much, but the Lucario wanted to make sure the Fennekin knew that she appreciated the effort. After she did that, the Lucario barked pointedly at Jazz, looking a bit amused at the lack of manners her trainer had at this point. "Ahaha, right. Sorry, where are my manners. I'm Jazz," he replied, looking back at Pup who nodded approvingly. Yes, thanks mom.
"Aw good." A relieved sigh left her lips as the stranger managed to get their pokemon up. She seemed... a little confused as they offered their Skiddo to give her a ride. "Uh- not to be a downer or anything but i've never rode a mon before- and i'm not small or anythin, skiddo'd probably crumble." She shrugged her shoulders then, pushing some hair behind her for a moment. Bender curiously stared at pup for a second, before letting out a small, excited bark, moving forward to nuzzle Pup's paw with his nose- he wasn't the best at high fives! An excited yip left his lips before he trotted back over to Derby, standing by her side. Oh- shit yeah, introductions. Why did that name sound kinda familiar?
Derby waved it off in her head, she was probably thinking about the music Jazz. "Derby's the name, nice to meetcha." she offered her hand for a shake, eyebrow raised.
Ryuu was indeed more than alright as he flapped his big wings, seemingly eager to get going. Jazz laughed and climbed on, rolling his eyes at the girl's protests. Without another word, he released Willow who looked around eagerly, bleating and sauntering over to the stranger. She was fairly big for her breed, that was certain enough. "Willow's a big girl, you won't hurt 'er~," Jazz mused, laughing lightly as the Skiddo bumped Derby's hand to demand pets.
Pup was pleased to see the Fennekin bump her hand back and went back to Jazz's side as well. Now that Ryuu was ready to go, they were ready to patrol like they were originally supposed to. "She's a good girl, she'll take you if you want~. Either way, I need to keep moving. Have to patrol the route and make sure everything's fine~. You coming or not, Derby?" Jazz asked, reaching out to shake her hand once given. Willow bumped Derby's hand again, bleating and stamping her feet, eager to get going.
A loud laugh escaped Derby's lips as the Skiddo butted her hand in an attempt to receive pats, he was a rather jolly one, aye? Kinda reminds her of Bender when he was in a fussy moon, but then this was coming from a large Skiddo, so... She scruffed at the Skiddo's head, running her hands through Willow's fur for a few moments and crookedly grinning at her. "Hiya, girly." Okay, maybe, just maybe, the Skiddo could hold her. But she also needed Bender up there too and to ensure all the bags stayed on stable... "Guess i'm comin'" Nothing Derby can't handle. The girl moved to wrangle her bags, pushing them either onto her shoulder or around her wrist before moving to lift Bender onto the Skiddo's back, following after with... a bit of effort on her part- and for a moment she struggled to balance until she managed to right herself, moving Bender into her lap before holding onto the Skiddo. "Thanks for the offer, can I call ya Jazzy?" She said after ensuring all her bits and bobs were in place.
Just as Jazz was getting ready to leave whether or not Derby agreed, it seemed that Willow was more insistent than they were right then. Figures. The Skiddo was a sweetheart and wasn't one to say no to attention. Still, Willow did manage to get Derby to agree to ride with him which had the Skiddo very excited to say the least of things.
Willow would wait patiently for Derby to get on and stomped her feet impatiently while she got on. Jazz nodded at the thanks but flinched a bit at the nickname, laughing a little awkwardly thereafter, "Just Jazz is fine~," he mused, shaking his head. Ryuu growled low in his version of laughing. Jazz just rolled his eyes and urged the Druddigon forward, "If you need a nickname, guess you could call me Sparky though. My gamer friends call me that~," Jazz suggested, smirking a bit at that.
Jazz had just started looking around the area for any signs of trouble when he realized... What the hell are those pokemon fighting about? It was bizarre to see a Dewpider larger than a Mudkip but... well, he seemed spunky enough? The poor Mudkip though seemed to be tearing up. So much for an easy day... "C'mon Ryuu, let's see what's got these babies fighting so much," Jazz murmured, already racing off in the direction of the pokemon, Willow close on his heels.
Naw, no Jazzy? Derby shook her head in mock-dissapointment at that, a soft 'tut' leaving her lips. "Aw, but Jazzy kinda suits ya, wouldn't you say?" Stubborn to a fault, Derby tilted her head a little, scrutinizing the green haired person before her. If anything, it might rise some slight displeasure from him but it was all in the light of teasing- which Derby got a kick out of. "Sparky? You're a gamer?" Her eyebrow raised slightly as she shifted herself to lean a little on Willow. "I know a mate called Sparky, though... he's an electrician- awful good at wirin' tho, don't get me wrong."
Bender let out an excited little coo, he liked Sparky! Was a good electrician, helped with the schematics of his leg and everything! Willow seemed to follow Jazz's lead, which meant the girl found herself being lead towards whatever the disruption was. Two fightin' mons, prolly doing some territorial stuff or whatever, just chilling it out in their habitat. Though the Mudkip was kinda cute, Derby wasn't one to take in a mon unless they needed some sorta fixin' up or a new home- like bein rescued and stuff.
"Aint it your job to sort their problems out?" Derby's voice carried as she watched the green haired stranger with a raised brow. "Looks like a territorial thing to me."
As Derby continued to try for the nickname, 'Jazzy', he had to fight to keep from rolling his eyes. A half laugh escaped him before Jazz shook his head, "Sure~. Maybe if I was five," he joked back before giving Derby a nickname he preferred. At the questioning affirmation, Jazz smirked a little, "What? You don't think a ranger can be a gamer? C'mon, you should know better than to judge a book by its cover," he teased, sticking out his tongue. The explanation about the electrician earned a soft laugh, "Is that so? What're the odds~. I'm pretty decent at wiring and technology myself~. I like to think myself something of an engineer or an inventor, what have you," he explained, shrugging nonchalantly at that bit of information
But onto more important matters, namely the Dewpider bully. It seemed the poor Mudkip had gotten trapped underneath a bunch of logs and the Dewpider was doing her no favors. Poor thing. With Willow out of commission for the time being, Jazz had to think about what pokemon would be best to challenge this unusually sized Dewpider. Maybe talking would be best for the time being. "Hey now, there's no need for that, Dewpider. Can't you see she's scared?" The Dewpider however only scoffed and continued to torment the Mudkip, even poking at her eyes now. Dammit. He had to think of something and quickly.
Climbing off of Ryuu, the Druddigon was given a few pats before Jazz would gesture to the Dewpider. "Hone Claws, then Scratch. Do your best to draw him away from the Mudkip," Jazz murmured to Ryuu who nodded in understanding. His claws would glow with power before he roared, drawing the Dewpider's attention and making sure that the Dewpider focused on him rather than the unfortunate Mudkip. "Derby, I'll need your help to move these logs, we have to make sure the Mudkip's alright," Jazz directed, watching carefully just in case Ryuu needed help.
Ohhh, a good nickname if he was five? Naw, this dude was askin for it. "Still reckon it fits, and i'm sure theres a buncha people my age called Jazzy roamin' this world, aye? If anything Sparky is on the same five year ol' level- buut if ya want sparky?" A shoulder roll, "I'll use it. Nniway, it's just with your hair you look like you're right outta a game, y'know?" She'd moved then to gently rake a hand through Benders fur as he adjusted how he sat in her lap, trying to balance all the bags as the Skiddo moved.
At Jazz's next words Derby's mouth opened slightly. "No shit? You're like an engineer? Familiar with wirin' an tech?" a grin stretched on her face. "Aint that a coincidence? Ya girl here's studyin' to be a real world class prostheticist- an' i'm a metalworker in my spare time, commissions and the all!" And Jazz was a ranger too- what a crazy world.
She watched atop the Skiddo and Jazz moved in to help the mons, it was kinda cool to see a ranger at work like this. They're pretty damn important to keepin' things settled on land, kinda like... pokecops? It was a pretty grizzly scene, the Dewpider was really going at the trapped Mudkip, but it wasn't Derby's place to intervene- at least, it wasn't supposed to be- until her name was called. Derby let out a hum in response, steadying herself before swinging off the Skiddo. Duty calls!
"Good thing i'm strong- aye?" She would usually flex but it kinda seemed like they were under a time crunch, so Derby instead moved to begin shifting the logs away from the Mudkip, grunting at their weight- the poor girl was cryin' and definitely had a few gnarly scratches across her eyes and on her upper chest- she'd prolly give em a once over once the girl was away from the logs. "Ayye, hang in there Girly.." Derby attempted to soothe the Mudkip, moving to shift away another log- enough to have the Mudkip whimper and attempt to stick her hand through a now visible hole between the logs, which only aggravated them more as they attempted to push back against the new force. "Naaaaww hun- paw back Girly..."
Of course, the Mudkip didn't exactly understand her and just sobbed, leaving Derby to quicken her pace until the Mudkip was able to be grabbed from above. Derby instantly wrapped her arms around the little water-type, retreating back towards the Skiddo before the Dewpider got any ideas. She moved then to settle by Dewpiders feet, checking over Mudkips wounds as the poor girl whimpered and sobbed. "Aw the nasty thing did a real number on ya, Girly." She brushed a hand over the Mudkip's head then, attempting to soothe her. "Need to getcha to a pokecentre, maybe- aint nothin' I can really do to help ya..."
The Mudkips crying eased up- and as cute as she was, and as much as Derby wanted to keep her... putting her back into her natural environment was probably for the best once she was all... healed up- right? Derby managed to call back to the green haired dude, "Got her out, Jazzy- errr- Sparky!"

Jazz would only laugh and roll their eyes as Derby said their preferred nickname(s) were childish. "The hair is my natural color, thank you very much~," they teased back, grinning at her reaction to the information that they were an engineer. Their eyes grew wide at hearing that they were actually in the same field more or less except with different day jobs. Of course that was something to talk about at a later time considering it was more important to get the Dewpider to stop rather than talk for hours on end about their shared passions.
While Derby got the logs off of the Mudkip, Jazz focused on the Dewpider that was none too pleased to be scratched at by a dragon. Right, now what had brought this on? As soon as the Mudkip had been taken to safety, Jazz was able to focus on making sure that the Dewpider was brought under control. "Right, Hone Claws and Scratch again, Ryuu," Jazz told Ryuu who immediately used the moves, using Scratch several times now. The Dewpider was only getting angrier though and Jazz knew there would be no reasoning with it in this current state. Tossing a Net Ball at the Dewpider, Jazz told Ryuu to keep an eye on it before going to see how the Mudkip was doing.
"Yeesh, the Dewpider did a number on her... I think she's taken a shine to you though..." Jazz murmured, bringing a careful hand to observe the scratches the Mudkip had endured, "We better hurry to the next town. But I think she'd do better in your care if you wanted to catch her." The poor scared Mudkip did look calmer in Derby's arms after all.
Derby's eyes followed the net ball as it was thrown towards the Dewpider, clearly, Jazz was a natural at dealin' with pokemon. There was somethin' obviously a bit cool about that, but it was probably all the ranger trainer and whatever that helped him with that. Derby wasn't all that good with wild mons in the first place, but yet the cute lil' girly in her arms seemed to be just relaxing, even after all the trauma she just went through- hopefully it'd all be pretty cool and she'd be able to go back to her natural habitat soon.
As the mon failed to be caught and ran off Derby flashed a kind smile to Jazz, sucks that he failed to catch the Dewpider, but it was only a mon at the end of the day. "Aye, nice try Sparky!" she shifted the Mudkip a little in her arms to allow Jazz to look her over, the poor thing whimpering softly and trying to curl tighter into Derby's embrace, scared.
As Jazz spoke again Derby brought a hand up to gently stroke at the Mudkip's cheek, "...She does seem a lil' scared of everythin' right now- maybe I could take her to the centre and... get her more trustin' of pokemon before releasin' her back to the wilds?"
The Mudkip stared at her, and Derby easily moved to cradel her in one arm, grabbing out a greatball to offer to the Mudkip, "You want help, hun?"

While it was a little disheartening to lose the Dewpider like that, Jazz wasn't going to let it bother them right then and there. Aside from that, it seemed that it had been pretty aggressive. Maybe I should've used a different tactic. Perhaps befriending it and attempting to use diplomacy over fighting would have been the better option. Oh well, Jazz had given it their best and wasn't going to dwell on it anymore. They had more to explore on the route. As Derby encouraged them despite how quickly the Dewpider had run away, they flashed her a smile. "Thanks, sometimes that's just how it goes though, no big deal~," Jazz mused, shrugging their shoulders while Ryuu made their way back.
"Good job, Ryuu, you did great~,"Jazz praised, patting Ryuu briefly before looking to see what Derby had decided to do with the Mudkip. After their encouragement to keep the Mudkip to help her recover, Jazz was glad to see that the Mudkip trusted Derby enough to come with her. "Hey, congratulations~, I think she'll be a great fit for you. She seems to trust you," Jazz mused, smiling at Derby before getting back on Ryuu.
"Shall we go? It doesn't look like there's anything else in the area, now."
A great fit for her? Naw, if the Mudkip wanted to leave after she'd got her all healed up that was perfectly fine, she wouldn't be able to give her the fun she needed, especially when workin' her arse off daily, she didn't wanna put that on any mon who probably'd be much better off outside, living their lives. "I'll get her healed up nn see what she wants to do, I reckon." a shrug was given as she shifted how she held the mudkip, the blue creature nuzzling gently into Derby. Bender watched with a soft coo, head tilting softly as he manaed the bags of tools.
Derby was getting read to get back onto Willow when an excited bark could be heard in the distance, and the girl turns her head slightly, only to see a huge Growlithe emerging from the treeline, a large stick held between his teeth, tag wagging as he approached Derby- oh- oh hey! It was Char! "Oh- shit Char!" Eyes flicked to Jazz and she grinned, "Aye, sorry, he ran off earlier before ya got here, I think he sniffed out this stick."
The big boofer happiny ran up to where Derby was, massive form towering over her as he dropped the stick right infront of her, and she shifted a little so the Mudkip could be held in one hand, patting Char with another, "Heyyy Buddy- aint you a good boofer- you bring me a stick to help with my new project? Aint you a good boyyy~"
Jazz would nod at Derby's initial statement, somehow they doubted that she would be able to let the Mudkip go after getting to know her. From the looks of it, she was a good one and Jazz could only smile at the affection the Mudkip was already showing Derby. No, she won't want to leave after that. They knew first hand how quickly a bond could form between human and pokemon and it looked like the Mudkip wasn't going to be ready to leave anytime soon, if at all.
Whatever they were going to say next was interrupted by the sound of an extremely large woofer. A good boy of an Arcanine that came bounding over to Derby with a stick in his mouth. A laugh would escape Jazz before they called Willow back over to them. It seemed the Skiddo was no longer needed and would be returned promptly thereafter. "Such a pretty Arcanine~," Jazz mused, smiling warmly at the big, good boy before their cell rang. Huh?
Answering the phone, Jazz's face grew rather serious before giving a few short answers. It seemed there was bigger problems than traveling with Derby to attend to. "Sorry, that was the rangers. I have to go, seemed someone woke up a cave of Bewears... See you around, Derby!" Jazz explained before turning around and urging Ryuu into a run. Even as lax as the Druddigon usually was, even he recognized the urgency in Jazz's voice. Soon, they were out of sight to deal with the situation.
