Juni yawned and stretched as she stepped out of the bedroom of her shared apartment. She’d been up late the night before working on some papers, and now she was regretting it as she looked at the clock and noticed it was already almost noon. I didn’t even have a beer last night… ugh… At least it was a weekend and not a day when she was teaching at the university. She wasn’t sure she could handle another one of those days.
Grumbling softly to herself as she made her way over to the kitchen, Juni fished through the pantry a couple of times before putting toast in the toaster and walking over to the white board on the kitchen wall. Scribbling down a few things for the next shopping trip, Juni then fished up a different white board form the kitchen table right after. “You will intergrate you little shits…” she muttered to the equations written down on said whiteboard— ones she ahd been working on for the last couple of days, in fact. “You Arceus damn motherfuckers…”
The pop of the toaster had Juni jolting, and she looked up disoriented for a moment before remembering what she had been doing. Quickly grabbing the toast, grabbing some cream cheese, spreading it, and putting both on the napkin, she walked over to the couch, sat down, and much-worked again on the whiteboard.
A noise just then had her glancing up again. “Mornin’ Derby….” Juni stated before looking down again.
This request was stupid- utterly stupid. Her pop had given it to her because he thought she'd adore tinkering around with a mechanical arm- if only he'd read the commisions info. They wanted an extra joint in it- inbetween the elbow and wrist and she'd spent the whole morning holed up in her room, attempted to come to some sort of deal with the customer- because who in their right mind would want a worm arm?! You can't get proper use out of that, and you'd just be an ole laughin' stock.
She couldn't even be bothered checking the time when she finally emerged from the mechanical cave that was her room, the worm-arm prototype held in her hand like some sort of weapon, flopping uselessly. She needed sustenance to keep up with this hell of a customer- she just had to be glad that for now she was just focusing on her final assessment. As she rounded a corner, she barely noticed as the useless arm veered slightly off and slammed into one of the many stacks of books littering the house, causing a loud groan to leave the girls lips.
"Bloody worm arms..." She slid to the floor, throwing the arm to the side with an annoyed noise as she moved to pickup the stacks of books- it almost didn't register as Juniper was speaking, taking a few seconds to actually render through her brain before she glanced over her shoulder, "Ugh...Morn', Juni. How those number things comin?"
She moved over the floor now, picking up the worm arm and slugging it over her shoulder, moving away from the kitchen and closer to the red head, peering over her shoulder from behind the couch.
Juni definitely saw that Derby had something in her hand the first time, but it would take a double take before she registered what it was— just in time for the arm to slap a stack of books. “What fuck,” Juni ask-stated, her face twisting up for a second. The proper answer just had her raising her eyebrow a little further.
As she was finally acknowledged, though, a forced sigh escaped from Juni, and she looked back down at her whiteboard again. “The paper’s not coming together, and I crashed another simulation,” she answered adjusting her glasses. “The simulation refuses to converge, and I’ve never seen an integral like this…” she raised the white board to Derby for a second. “Chudit keeps suggesting Monte Carlo, but I’ve done that and—”
A weird breathy noise came and went from Juni as she looked sideways at Derby. “…Want to tell me what’s up with the arm?” she asked instead.
Awfuck, another simulation? Derby didn't understand half the sciency stuff, to be totally honest, but if it were complex enough to crash twice and have weird inner wirings, just meant the cogs were loose somewhere, probably. And then paper writing was just.... ugh. "Shit, sounds like the cogs are broke or somethin...?" she tilted her head, furrowing her brows as if she was thinking before staring down the whiteboard, "Yeah dunno, but i'm sure you'll get it, whether you use the... monte carlo or another monaco sim..."
At the mention of the arm hauled over her shoulder, Derby let out a snort, moving to hold the arm out, wriggling it a little before letting the hand loom over Juni's shoulder. "One of pop's stupid customers- they want an extra joint riiiight-" She moved the arm to rest right in the middle of Juni's forearm, "Here- but then it fucks up the whole internal structure, and i've been chattin' em up all morning, they refuse to back down- and it's just the one arm to, so they'll have like... it jus' aint right, Juni." she let out a huff, reeling the arm back and wiggling it again, staring at it with a fed-up look "If it was just a prop arm this'd be fine- but then all the inner working and stuff that'll have to be done to get it like- actually useable? I swear whoever thought this up musta short-circuited or something."
A dramatic sigh escaped from Juni, but a small smile came to her features after the fact. As frustrating as this work was, she really did love it at the end of the day. It gave her such a strong sense of purpose— even if that purpose was just to be infuriated now and again.
Looking over the arm, though, Juni found more questions than answers. “An extra joint….” she repeated only to look down as the arm poked her forearm. “Why?” Juni couldn’t help herself. That was such a weird ass place for that. “What do they expect to do with it?” she asked. Like weren’t these prosthetics for people to use as actual limbs and stuff? Juni’s brows furrowed.
“Do you think it’s a gag request?” she asked after a moment. A pause. “Like they’re just testing if you could and would do it?” Another pause. “I mean I guess if they’ve paid it doesn’t matter either way but…????” Fishing up some of the toast on the arm of the couch, she took a bit and then set it back down again before making a gesture with her hand to welcome Debry to it if she wanted.
At Juni's questioning Derby just shrugged her shoulders, moving to grab the arm more steadily before swinging herself over the back of the sofa and plopping next to Juni, letting the arm bounce a second before resting in her lap. "They want more flexibility or something- like a creepy ball jointed doll- gave me the i'm the one getting an extra limb here, so I should get what I want talk- tragedy, heartache, all that good stuff that comes with-" Holding the arm again, she waggled the finger, "This... thing..."
At the idea of it being a gag request, of all things, Derby tilted her head, bringing the arm closer to herself for inspection... "Naw, if it was I reckon they'd ask for it to glow or have at least a sixth finger- besides customs, even with an extra limb are mad hefty." she shrugged her shoulders, relaxing back against the couch for a second as she moved to test the flexibility on the extra joint- almost wincing at the sound of a click and a rotation that... definitely shouldn't occur.
Derby glanced at the toast out the corner of her eye- well- she didn't really need ta be told twice. She nudged a piece forward before all but rippin into it, a muffled, "Thank ya." leaving her lips before she swallowed it down.
"...People are jus' weird- but i'm not done tryin' to convince them outta it." She crossed a leg over the other and peered sideways at the red-head, "...any other news, apart from like the sim and the papers? Need me to read over anythin'?"
Juni straightened briefly as Derby swung herself over the couch. Her lips parted and then immediately closed. Derby didn’t need reminding that the couch could break if someone did that, but still. Instead, her eyes raised to the triple jointed mechanical arm in Derby’s hand again. Weird…
A small snort escaped from her at the mention of six fingers. “You know that’s a dominant human trait, right? Six fingers. Five is recessive but just more common,” she shared with a small bemused look. Leaning over to better assess the arm (and take her attention off this stupid infuriating project), she hummed softly. The sound of the click had her nose scrunching in response.
“Welcome,” was all she’d say at the taken up offer of toast. Juni finished her own and then sighed a little.
“Well, I put up the wanted ad for a third roommate since Cal found their own place, and I got at least one hit…” She shifted setting the white board aside and pulling out her phone instead. “Ya ever heard of a Jazz Johnson?” she asked flipping to the board she’d put the ad on and then turning it around for Derby to see. “They seemed pretty positive about sharing the rent and utilities at least?”
Having six fingers was like... a dominant human trait? Derby blinked for a second, holding her hand, which was still clutching the half-eaten bit of toast out infront of her. "Really?...kinda wish I had a sixth finger- damn it pops." how could would it be? To be able to market herself as a prosthetic with 6 fingers?! She'd get all the customers running in, hell she'd probably get some damn good funding from it too.
As Juni spoke about the welcome ad Derby moved to finish her toast, her curiosity piked. So they'd got responses? Or were they gonna need to make the ad more flashy to attract people? Derby wasn't too sure, and munched on her crust with a dash of interest twisting through her brain.
Jazz... Johnson. Two J's, just to get the ball rolling. If she couldn't call this people Jay-Jay, she wanted her money back. Shakin' her head and peering closer to the phone, she attempting to take a gauge on what kind of person they were. "Do you know their age and stuff yet? Are they gonna be some peppy first year who want's to drag us out every second of the day for sunshine and rainbows and studying in the weather?" Sarcasm laced her tone and she fought back a groan. "...Next doors students are enough, ya hear?"
She tugged on a tangled strand of hair as she thought, "But like- if they got all the cogs and gears settled, rent and stuff- you reckon they'll take it? The position I mean."
“Yep, usually doctors will remove a sixth finger from a baby at birth because a lot of people think it’s weird,” Juni made a face and shrugged her shoulders indifferently. “But ya know.”Juni herself wouldn’t mind having six fingers.
Her attention flicked to her phone, though, wherein their potential new roommate had posted. A small snort escaped from her at the questions, and a small roll of eyes was given. “I learned enough from that time with Drew….” she answered reaching up to adjust her glasses. “This one says they’re twenty-six and not actually studying at Uni….” she answered. “It’s kind of vague but it seems like they just want a place to crash now and again?”
The question after that earned a shrug. “I invited ‘em over to come see the place, so we’ll see, I guess… not sure how long that’ll take since they haven’t given me a date or time.” She kind of didn’t expect it to be immediate, but who knew with people like this. “Hopefully soon…”
Not actually studying at uni? Then... what was the point in staying in Ivy Town? Places were expensive, the whole area was expensive. "...You think they might be part of one of the businesses 'round here, then? Like... comin' to stay in ivy town and not being in uni..." it was a little confusing, but like... her pops and ma lived in ivy, so maybe there was something show-offy about the place that drew people in? Derby probably could never know.
...Twenty-six? Derby rolled her eyes, "Means i'm still the youngen then- if they try boss me around they'll get a screwdriver up the rear." Derby was half joking, and moved to fiddle with one of the screws as she spoke to keep her hands busy. "I mean, as long as they don't chose a day Skye's comin' over nnn that you're off teachin', we should be good, right?"
She tilted her head, thinking for a second. "...But... place to crash... sounds like they'll just be poppin by randomly- maybe they're a journeying trainer?"
“Not sure,” Juni frowned as she switched tabs on her phone to Chuugle the name. It was taking a moment to load (damn wifi what the hell?), so she listened to Derby in the meantime. “Pfff… we’re all adults here,” Juni insisted with a small eye roll. “Minus Skye…” Because Skye was Derby’s little sib, and no matter his age, he would always be a baby. At the mention of timing, she hummed. “I’ll have to make sure about that—“
Ah there went Chuugle finally. Oh, huh— “Actually Chuugle says they’re a Ranger in the region?” she ask-stated back. Was this the same Jazz, though? Too bad it didn’t have a picture immediately available for some reason. Maybe they were just looking to crash while they traveled around or— “Maybe they were stationed to this general area?” she asked. That would make a lot of sense in her books anyways.
A ranger?! Oh shoot, that was actually pretty cool? Well, if the Chuugle showed the same person, that was. "Damn, a ranger?!" She glanced around the loungeroom, as if now taking in the many half-built machines and strange devices that littered the apartment. "...You reckon we'll need to do like, a tidy?" there was a joking tone to her voice- no way was Derby actually gonna clean up. One wrong touch on the internal structure of a spare part she was working on for a Ferroseed and that baby could blow right up- it's not in working function yet. ...Juni didn't need to know.
"Maybe we should check their Chatspot?" Derby uncrossed her legs as she moved to get up, "Do like a deep dive or whatever- just so we know they're not a creep?" she moved to the kitchen for a moment to grab a soft drink, the sound of the cracking of a can echoing throughout the house.
Oh— Juni winced at Derby’s question-suggestion. “I hope not,” she paused. “Actually it would be insincere to tidy up too much since this is like our norm and all…” she reasoned out quickly. “Need to let Jazz make an informed choice.” And not just because Juni didn’t want to clean.
Hmmmm… Juni shifted over the arm of the couch and pulled a laptop out from below it. “Let’s see…” Chatspot, Chatspot… Why was the wifi so slow in this damn place? She was going to have Derby take it apart on eof these days if it kept being like this. “Beer—“ escaped from Juni almost immediately after only for her to pause and reconsider that statement. “Actually can you make coffee maybe?’ That was probably better for thinking with anyways.
Looking through a few screens, Juni scrolled. “Looks like they have family in some place called the Veria region? Ya ever heard of it?” she called. Juni was not entirely sure had never heard of it but couldn’t remember anything about it right then and there. “And Alola huh…” At least if these image-locations were right, anyways.
Thank the screws that they weren't gonna have to clean up, hopefully 'Jazz' could just deal with it when the time came, and if they didn't wanna stay here? Then some other person who can deal with the mess probably could. Oh- hopefully they'd be like good with kids though, because Skye was hella nosy, in a cute way.
Moving to down some of her soda and glance through the fridge, she had moved to pull out a beer before Juni had started talking- only pausing with her hand around one of the cans when she changed her mind- oh shit. Derby moved to push it back quickly, a nod of approval going down before she moved around the kitchen for a moment. "You want like proper coffee or the iced shit?"
As she spoke about some weird region Derby furrowed her brows, moving to peek through the doorframe and give Juni a confused look. "Nah, not a Veria- kinda sounds like Almia though, you reckon they're close?" Back to the kitchen around, taking another sip of her soda. "...Sounds like they get around, though- in any case, they probably travel a lot, which means I guess we can't expect em to be super permanent- I give it five months, tops."
Mmmmm. “Regular hot, I guess,” Juni answered. It was kind of too cold to be drinking iced even if it did sound good for whatever reason. Were they supposed to get snow later? Or was that further north?
At the mention of Almia, Juni hummed a little. Tabbing over, she typed in the geography and pulled up a map. “Huh, there’s a lot of regions surrounding it that I don’t recognize” she admitted. “Whatever…” Tabbing back over again for now.
The mention of months earned a small nod. “That’s at least five months of split rent though,” she considered aloud. “Maybe I should ask ‘em how long they plan to stick around?” She started typing up a reply anyways and waited for Derby before actually hitting send.
“Hey do you wanna go out shopping later? We ate up all the Poffin puffs….” she called tabbing over even after to check when stores opened.
Regular hot? Guess she'd have to use the kettle, thankfully that isn't anything too hard- as long as it's not cooking Derby'll have no issues. She'll forever regret the say she attempted to make sunny side up eggs, to be honest. Thats a big no from her. As Juni continued speaking Derby paused in her kitchen antics- what area even was the possible rent candidate from? uni'd never heard about the regions... around the other region?
That's actually kinda odd, not that she'd ever comment. Shuffling around and grabbing some instant coffee from the shelf now she moved to shove some into a mug, waiting a few seconds before grabbing the kettle and pouring the hot water in. "Any sugar?" she called out, moving to the cabinet to look around for a sec."And yeah, I mean- doesn't hurt to ask, aye? If it's only a few months we could probably keep the ad up for any other applicants, just in case or somethin'"
She moved to add all the neccesary things to the coffe now, sugar if Juniper had said so, milk if she wanted, all that jazz, and eventually came out balancing a mug of coffee in one hand and her soda in the other. "'Ere ya go." passing it over and flopping back onto the couch, Derby took a sip of her fizzing drink and thought for a moment, "Oh shit yeah, shoppin' probably aint a bad idea, we're already out of em?" Oh, an idea clicked. "Yeah, not like i'm really doin' much- can we go past one of the local tool warehouses though? You won't believe have many nuts I used up for this stupid arm."
“Ah, no sugar, but could you check if we have any creamer left over?” Juni shifted as she called over her shoulder. Last she had checked, they had some hazelnut creamer, but if there was any left now was up to speculation until confirmation. Ah yeah… Derby also brought up a good point. Best not to close it if there was only a small time window. She’d wait until the response from Jazz, though, for confirmation.
As Derby came around again, Juni immediately smiled shifting the computer to precariously balance on her lap as she took the cup. A momentary pause and then she’d raise it to her lips. Ah yeah, that hit the spot (and the headache she had— wait a second was she having caffeine withdrawl this entire time? Arceus damn it). At the questions, though, Juni hummed softly. “Yeah, might as well do a full shopping and then loop around for groceries…” she hummed at this thought before shifting her coffee and computer again and starting to type up a list.
“I noticed we were also out of apples again; I wonder if we’re going to get anymore this late in the season.” There were always the imports that came in occasionally, but they just didn’t taste as fresh now and again. A thought occurred to her, and she made a few more notes. “Are you gonna need bolts on the nuts or?”
The girl leaned against the back of the couch, taking sips of her soda every other second to pass the time, and relishing in the sweet, sugary and utterly unhealthy flavour. ust the type o' thing she grew up downing by the dozen down in her dads workshop. "So basically, we're goin' on a grocery raid." an eyebrow show up, partly in amusement to what she'd said, that and Juni seemed a little bit more relaxed than before.
"If they are sellin' apples... bet it'll be your soul for a dozen- in winter they don't come cheap- maybe we can substitute and grab that canned apple stuff? Probably ickier tasting but gets that healthiness thing checked out." she moved to put down the drink on a side table, picking up the arm again to dangle it infront of her face. "Yeah- gonna need some bolts too... probably some wirin' now that I think about it- depends if they want like... an armature too in there."
She shifted, to peer back at what Juni was doing, "Your whiteboard markers hanging in there? Or do you need a whole buncha them too?"
Uggggghhhhh. “That’s true,” Juni mumbled softly to herself as Derby mentioned the inflation that always came about this time of year. At the suggestion of canned stuff, she hummed a little. “Yeah that works, or just get apple juice….” She typed a few suggestions on the screen and then took another sip of her coffee. “Whichever’s cheapest yeh?” She grinned back at Derby.
Her eyes raised up to the third jointed mechanical arm again, and her nose immediately scrunched at it now. Bolts, nuts, wiring…. Juni nodded typing out the list. “Don’t forget to charge them for the extra parts…” She smirked a little at that already assuming that Derby had.
The mention of her whiteboard markers, though, drew her attention over to said whiteboard. “Might as well stock up before the unthinkable happens. These were opened up just the other day, but I didn’t see any extras.” Juni shook her head. The last time she’d run out of whiteboard ink, it had been at 3 am and not even the convenience store had more of them. Never again. Jotting down that information too, she sat back and adjusted her glasses briefly.
“Ya wanna head out now?” she asked looking back towards Derby. “We can keep brainstorming as we go I think, so long as one of us has a pen.” She hit print on the document or now.

Whatever's cheapest! Derby found herself nodding, and if all apple things were expensive... then apple flavoured lollies would probably work. Just anything apple, probably. "Yep, the cheapest." a nod, before she moved to rest the fake arm on the armrest, snickering as it flopped off the armrest to the floor since the joint couldn't support such a movement- this was stupid. "Oh believe me, i'll be chargin' them for mental strain by the endda this."
A half-joke, she took another sip of her soda as she listened to Juni, whiteboard markers it is. They sure were gonna end up buying a buncha stuff- a true blue raid, and away to get her mind off the stupid arm and figuring outta way to make it... actually work properly.
"Sure, lemme just grab my toolkit and Bend's ball- i'm sure there'd be a pen in there or sumthin'" She dissapeared for a second before coming back with her metal kit in her hand, she never went anywhere without it which was... probably strange to a few people, but Derby didn't care. Picking up the soda with one hand and chugging down the rest of the contents she glanced back at Juni.
"Let's go raid a supermarket, aye?"
