Will you be a classic trainer? A criminal? A farmer? Choose your destiny on Legends Rising.
Ah ha, at last in Cherry Town. Jace stood on the pedals of the bike and coasted into the quaint little farming town. The boy's trip down Route 4 had been exhausting and he and his pokemon were glad to be out of the wilds. Sure he'd greatly shortened their trip down the route thanks to the bike he'd stolen, but they'd run into a few obstacles along the way so the trip hadn't been uneventful.
Now however Jace was looking to rest up a bit. He'd been on his feet since before dawn that morning and dusk was fast approaching. Plus he needed a shower and change of clothes as he was sore and still covered in mud and muck from an earlier fall. Thus their first stop was the pokemon center. He got Zag, Tic and Nik, what he was now calling the nickit they'd discovered on their way here, checked out as he checked in and headed for the room to change and freshen up.
Nurse Joy's Blissey happily dropped Jace's pokemon off at his room while he showered. Clean and refreshed the boy now had a chance to think and get his bearings. First up was checking out what all was in that saddlebag that had been on the bike. He managed to borrow a hose and hosed off the bike then wiped it down taking care of most the rough spots. It felt good to have a bike again, even if it wasn't originally his. He'd have to be careful not to run into its former owner. Plus the saddlebags seemed to have a few goodies inside.
First off he found a couple sitrus berries, these must've been what Nik had been after earlier. There was even some Pen as well. However the most important thing were the two pokeballs that had fallen out earlier. Jace wasn't sure this was the time to see what they contained. After all, they did belong to another trainer, he'd have to find someone who could wipe the balls ownership chip and transfer them to him, same as he'd done when he'd stolen Zag. Of course the pokemon themselves would likely not be very happy about being taken from their trainer. That'd be another matter to deal with.
So for now he kept the balls tucked away until a more suitable time. He did however had Tic, the recently hatched joltik, and Nik, the thieving nickit. Jace released the pair of them alongside Zag. The nickit was a new species he'd not seen before. Nik eyed the boy warily and scooted toward the door. It was obvious she was trying to sneak off. "Hey now Nik, you can't run off on me. You're the one who went to the trouble of saving me and I've a feeling it wasn't just to get at those sitrus berries. You could've done that while I was falling." The boy pointed out causing the fox to make a face.
Nik shrugged then pawed at the door. She really didn't like being trapped in the room. Jace sighed and stood up. "Well we might as well go and get some dinner then... though I don't have too much Pen left..." Sure he'd gotten some Pen for delivering the letter as well as whatever was in the saddlebag, but to buy the supplies he needed for traveling it wasn't nearly enough. He pursed his lips then slowly cracked open the door. "Now stay close and don't go wander off or you won't get anything to eat alright?" He sternly told the nickit who was trying to squeeze through the crack in the door.
Nik stopped and glanced up at him with a small scowl. She nodded but bolted down the hall before Jace could even get out the door. "Hey slow down!" He called after her. Zag scrambled after the boy and fox and lucky Tic enjoyed riding on the boy's back. Out the door and down the country road, Nik had caught a whiff of something and she was intent on finding whatever it was.
It didn't take her long to track it down. One of the little farmer market stands had fresh pies for sale each made from fresh farm grown berries. The pie in question was a steaming bluk berry pie that Nik was practically drooling over. Jace noticed the price of the pies and balked, there was no way he could afford that and potions and revives and other travel necessities.
A little voice in the back of his head began to whisper... 'So what? Just take it... you already took that bike, what's a pie? You know you really, really want that pie and so does Nik... if you don't take it, she will and you know she'll make a mess of it and get you all in trouble...' Jace bit his lip, he'd promised himself to quit with the stealing and the bike, well, he'd been desperate. But here, they could find something cheaper to eat, or even eat whatever the pokemon center provided. Still the pie was just calling to him.
Jace glanced around for anyone who was watching. It was close to dusk, things were closing up, there weren't too many people around at this hour. The pie merchant was busy packing up the pies and setting them on a cart to take back home. Jace waited until the packed up the bluk berry pie then glanced at Zag and motioned toward the merchant. "Keep them busy okay?" He whispered. Nik raised a brow and watched Jace's actions closely. Tic didn't seem to care in the least what the boy did but also kept an eye out from his perch on Jace's back.
When the merchant's back was turned, watching Zag yip and bounce around in front of them, Jace slipped quietly over to the cart and took hold of the pie. He gave one last look around before trying to carefully sneak away with the baked goodie.

Success! Jace grinned in spite of himself and he hurried off back toward the pokemon center Zag and Nik following behind. The boy paused before going inside. Might it look strange if he just walked passed the nurse carrying a pie? If the baker came looking and got wind of a kid carrying a pie around he didn't want anyone to see him sulking back to his room. No they needed a better way in.
"Let's see if there's a back entrance we can sneak in." Jace suggested as he slipped around the side of the center. Most of the rooms were on the second floor so sneaking in through a window might not work out. He considered sending Zag or Nik in to distract the nurse on duty but seeing as Zag was of a unique coloring and Nik was still a relatively unfamiliar pokemon, both could likely be traced back to him.
The tried to keep from looking too suspicious as they snuck around the center looking for a back or side door or even an open window. The boy carefully tried each window that they passed to see if any would open though no luck so far. Zag and Nik trailed along behind and kept an eye out while Tic crawled up the side of the wall to get a better viewpoint. Eventually they stumbled on a door, perhaps to the back kitchen or laundry area. Jace gave the handle a soft jiggle to see if it was unlocked.
The door is unlocked! And sure enough you can slip inside unnoticed. You find that this leads into a hallway where various patient rooms are. Now where are the stairs?
The door opened with ease which actually caught Jace a little off guard. Should it have been that easy? He guessed that the pokemon center security wasn't as good here in the smaller town, likely they weren't expecting much trouble out here. Quietly he slipped inside, his trio following after. Tic remained on the ceiling, skittering ahead of them. Zag happily pranced ahead, not really grasping the need for stealth but it didn't seem like there was anyone back here at the moment. Nik was on edge, the little fox quite enjoying the excitement. Jace tucked the pie basket under an arm as he moved ahead.
"It looks like we're in the patient's wing." He said in a low voice. That likely meant there would be recovering pokemon back here. Briefly he wondered what sort of pokemon could be here at the center. Trainers of all kinds likely stopped in at the small farm town at some point. Could there be any valuable or rare pokemon here? Jace felt his fingers start to twitch at the thought. He shook his head trying to shake the thoughts aside. Now while he had in fact stolen pokemon before, the first had been Zag, out of desperation and the other were the two pokeballs he'd unintentionally stolen along with the bike.
He didn't really like stealing pokemon but it was often hard to resist if he saw a cool pokemon he liked. If he did steal pokemon it would only ever be for himself, not for profit. Not that it made it any better but at least he wouldn't just sell them off to the highest bidder or something. To sate the sudden desire to nick something, Jace looked around and picked up what looked like a bag of spare change that had been left lying outside one of the rooms. Hopefully that would curb the twitchy fingers for now. Seriously, it wasn't like he hadn't just grabbed this pie, but the urge was rarely ever sated.
They continued passed the patient rooms, trying to keep low and out of sight just in case anyone happened to come down the hall or out of the rooms. Being early evening, Jace figured everyone was either having dinner or getting ready for bed, though even for this little farm town it might be a tad early for bed. But what did farm folk do in the evening? Either way he remained on his toes as they continued down the hall looking for any route that would lead upstairs. The boy assumed the door at the end entered back into the main lobby of the center so they didn't want to go that way.
He stopped in front of another side door that didn't look like a patient room. He figured it was likely just a storage or cleaning closet but who knows, it could be a door to a back stairwell. Jace tried the door guessing he'd try his luck even though he knew that rarely ever worked out in his favor.

The door that you try and open actually pulls back, and from behind, a Nurse steps forward. They blink at you a couple of times in confusion. "Uhm, what are you doing back here?" they ask.
"Shit." Jace knew he should've known better than to trust his luck. The male gawked at the nurse a moment before Nik appeared at his feet holding up a paw and whimpering. Jace glanced down at the dark fox and back at the nurse. He tried to discreetly conceal the pie as he backed up and shifted to the side while gesturing with his free hand down at Nik.
"Oh! I'm so sorry. Um... I was just looking for someone who could look at my nickit. She's been limping and I wasn't sure what happened..." The male said a little hastily though tried to sound completely sincere. He blinked slowly for a moment and his vision shifted allowing the auras of those around him to come into focus.
He was slowly becoming more and more skilled at this transition. It was still difficult to block auras out completely but the more he worked at it the less he could see when he didn't want to. When focused like this he was allowing everything in and blocking nothing so as to be able to see all the little things 'normal' people couldn't. Reading the subtle changes in one's aura was difficult but he was getting pretty good at it. This trick of his had helped him get out of a few sticky situations before and hoped that it might help now.
Jace eyed the nurse and tried to get a read on their emotional state, whether they were overly suspicious or disbelieving him. Zag appeared behind Jace and stuck his head between the boy's feet looking up at the nurse with a goofy grin. Tic settled above the doorway watching carefully in case there was something the bug could do to distract the nurse.
The nurse stares with a mixed expression. Jace would see many colors in their aura, but the way in which they moved together would be unfamiliar to him— perhaps too complex an emotion then to be read clearly. “I’ll let the head nurse know,” they bent down to examine the Nikit. “Come back this way, we’ll have it looked at.” They made a gesture for Jace to follow and then led to one of the exam rooms. There was no real way to get away from it without looking suspicious then, and if stealth might have helped in the moment, a Blissey came around the corner calling happily. No way out now.
Well this sucked. Jace was getting a confusing read off the nurse so wasn't quite sure if they believed him or not. Judging by their offer to examine Nik they were either calling Jace's bluff or they semi-believed the boy. With their back turned Jace looked up at Tic above them. The boy carefully raised the basket holding the pie up toward the bug. Tic quietly lowered an electric web down and caught the pie with it. The bug pulled it back to himself and remained on the ceiling hopefully out of sight with the basket.
Nik huffed and glanced around then reached down and bit into her own paw wincing as she did so. Jace had to keep from gasping at the fox's actions. She apparently realized the trouble they were in and purposely injured herself so as to not get called out for their fib. Nik gave Jace a pained smirk, though new to the group the nickit had taken a liking to the boy, likely because they shared similar interests. Jace bent down and picked Nik up so she wouldn't have to walk on the injured paw.
"Right, coming." Jace said as he followed after the nurse cradling the nickit with Zag darting along behind him. The boy kept his aura shaded eyes peeling for anything of interest, perhaps if he'd bothered to check the door with his aura sight before opening it. Dumb move on his part but live and learn. Tic crawled away toward the main door with the pie and hid in a corner hoping not to be discovered while Jace continued with his ruse.

The nurse leads back into an exam room and then goes to talk to someone else. A head nurse comes in and seems much more concerned and invested in the narrative that a young man was hoping to help out his Nikit. After assessing the wound, she cleaned it and then healed it quickly. Seems all is well? For the moment.
Jace fidgeted from one foot to the other as he waited for the nurse to finish up. So far it looked like he was off the hook, nobody seemed to suspect him of being anything other than a kid with an injured pokemon. Once Nik was all patched up Jace bowed his head and thanked the nurse then quickly lead the fox and raccoon back down the hall. He hesitated at the door back to the lobby. This still wasn't exactly the best route to take, though if the nurse was still in the back room would there be anybody in the lobby at the moment?
It was starting to get later now, Jace might have fewer people to have to avoid. He found the corner in which Tic had hidden. It wasn't too hard to see the brightly charged aura radiating off the joltic. In fact the whole center was alive with varying auras which was almost blinding. Jace blinked a few more times trying to focus only on the auras he wanted to see. It was difficult though, the boy was still pretty new to developing this unique skill. It wasn't like he had anyone who could show him what all one could really do when seeing auras.
The blonde hesitated at the door to the lobby. Tic crawled down to the top of the doorway and waited. So long as Tic stayed out of sight they might have less trouble sneaking passed. Jace raised his headphones hoping to go for that 'minding my own business' look. He eyed the door a moment, trying to pinpoint the location of any auras beyond the thin piece of metal, in case there was anyone lying in wait on the other side.
Carefully he opened the door and tried to quietly slip through, holding it long enough for Tic to scurry through and back up the wall. If they all kept out of sight, acted like they belonged and avoided running into anyone, perhaps they could make it to the lobby stairs and head up to the room. Then they could enjoy the pie and perhaps poke around a couple of the other rooms, just to see if they contained anything of interest.

There is exactly one person in the lobby and they seem to be sprawled out on the couches taking a nap. It's easy to get the Joltik in and up to the stairs leading to the rooms above. There are several rooms that you pass on your way to the one designated as yours, but no one seems to be up here.
Well so far so good, there didn't seem to be anyone around to stop him, save for someone sleeping in the lobby. Jace was slightly curious as to who was taking a nap on one of the many couches there but thought it best to keep making his way back to their room. He rubbed his eyes, focusing with the aura sight was taxing and it could be easier to just focus on turning it off. Still he was hoping that perhaps this way he could be forewarned in case someone was coming.
Tic had wandered on ahead, crawling across the ceiling with the pie basket dangling from above. The huge joltik wasn't having to much difficulty with it due to his unusual size though Jace wondered how long he'd be able to carry the thing. Zag had darted ahead, eager to reach their room and have some pie. It seemed a silly venture, nicking a pie just for supper, but Jace wasn't a typical thief and without the addictive need to steal something cropping up he likely never would've gone down this path he found himself on.
He knew getting mixed up with the punk street gang was a stupid idea, but it'd been the first time in awhile he felt he'd belonged. It was easy blaming his parents for his actions now, and while he kind of understood his father turning him in, he still felt betrayed. They'd never really understood their son, not his stories about seeing colors around people or his defense of being unable to help himself when it came to nicking things. They'd given him a good life, thus believed he had no need reason to steal other than attention and that it was all just because of him being jealous of his baby brother, obviously. Sure that had played a part in his later decisions but as a kid, well, they weren't the most supportive parents when they discovered his 'acting out' as they called it.
But dwelling on the past wasn't going to help them in this situation. Jace only needed to pass a few rooms before they reached theirs and Tic was already at the door waiting. The teen hadn't noticed anything unusual on this floor so far. While he could pick up most auras on the other side of something like a door, it wasn't as easy when there were multiple doors to check. It certainly seemed like the place was deserted, either everyone was asleep or it was just a small town that didn't get many overnight visitors to the pokemon center. It was possible he was being a little too cautious and should drop all pretense and make a run for his room, but then again probably still better to not panic.
Well they'd made it, Jace hadn't noticed anyone or anything out of the ordinary on the way down the hall. Tic tapped at the top of the doorway getting a little tired of carrying this pie. Jace hurried over and paused now growing a little suspicious. What if there was someone on the other side waiting for him? But why would they and who'd just go into a trainer's room like that. If anyone was in there it'd likely just be the nurse's blissey or something getting linens though he hadn't even used the room yet.
"Sheesh now I'm psyching myself out of just opening a door." Jace muttered to himself as he reached for the door handle. Of course he did wonder if all the other doors were just rooms like his own. Might there be something of value hiding behind one of these doors? But no, he wasn't a thief, well, not that kind of thief. Nicking loose, shiny objects when they were sitting out in plain view was one thing, actually breaking into a room to just steal from someone? That wasn't him... right?
Nik however had stopped at the door next to Jace's room and was anxiously pawing at it and whining. Jace froze with his hand on the knob of his door and turned to stare at the nickit. What was she doing? She was going to blow this if she kept that up. Jace carefully cracked the door so Tic could scurry inside then ran over to Nik. "Shh what are you doing Nik? We don't need to go in there, that's the wrong room. Be quiet now or you'll get us caught."
The door Nik had been pawing at suddenly opened, and what appeared to be a Ranger of all things stared out. "Uhm...." She looked from Jace to the Nickit and then back again. Her brow raised, and she waited for an explanation.
Jace's eyes went wide when the door opened and the woman who stepped out was quite visibly a ranger. Honestly though at the moment he wasn't exactly doing anything obviously wrong. The situation probably looked hella suspicious though especially with the blonde male sweating bullets all of a sudden. He continued to stare at her, slightly distracted by her aura which was quite something to see. He wasn't sure what to say at first though Nik quickly managed to catch his attention as she tried to force her way passed the ranger's legs.
"Wha- no! Nik!" He shouted a little louder than intended and lunged for the nickit. The boy managed to grab hold of her tail and dragged her back to him then clamped her close to his chest. Jace gazed up at the ranger from his position on the floor now and felt his face redden. A sheepish grin spread over his features as Zag took this opportunity to hop up on his shoulder and give the ranger the goofiest girn the zigzagoon could muster.
"I am so, so sorry ma'am. Nik here must have smelled something in your room she wanted. She's a recent catch so she's still learning how to behave herself." Jace explained speaking the last part a bit more forcefully and directing it at the nickit who grumbled in his arms. Zag just wagged his tail completely oblivious to Jace's concern regarding the ranger. By all appearance Jace did just look like some teenage trainer with an overly curious fox and very happy racoon.
"Oh, well I do have some freshly made Pokeblocks..." The ranger looks over her shoulder and walks back into her room. Picking something up off the table, she walks back and bends down to the Nickit and offers it forward. "You can have one."
The nickit happily accepted the pokeblock and gazed up at the ranger with her big, warm eyes. Jace got to his feet, still holding Nik then awkwardly gestured toward his room. "Well, um, thanks. Sorry to bother you. Think we'll just get some sleep then."
Jace dipped his head bidding the ranger goodnight before he hurried back to the room. At long last he was in and closed the door behind him, locking it for good measure. He turned and gazed at the trio before him. Tic, Nik and Zag, they'd all helped or hindered in some way and now they were all going to enjoy their spoils.
The boy picked up the pie basket Tic had left on the nightstand and carefully pulled the pie out. However, Jace suddenly realized they had no utensils and thus no way to actually cut the pie. He facepalmed a moment then sighed. "Oh well, guess we're doing this the messy way." He chuckled and used his finger to crudely poke holes in the pie until it was kind of in four pieces. He considered releasing the two pokemon from the pokeballs he'd inadvertently stolen but he wasn't sure how either of the pokemon inside would react nor what they even were.
So he figured this would remain with the four of them. Jace was glad the center had hardwood flooring throughout and not carpet in the rooms. He figured it made it easier to clean or something. So he just pulled a piece of pie out and slapped it on the floor, one for each pokemon. Jace himself dug into the pie left in the pan with his fingers.
The trio happily munched their ill gotten goods glad to have something to eat for the night at least. Once they finished, Jace threw the pie pan and basket out the window where hopefully on one would find it for awhile or if they did wouldn't be able to connect it to him. Then the group set about cleaning up their gooey pie mess, mostly just using a towel and hand soap from the bathroom. Once the floor was at least not sticky and neither was Jace or his pokemon, the boy flopped into bed and passed out.
