Having successfully snuck through the capital city, Jace managed to hitch a ride on the ferry traveling from Plum to Bass. The boy was worn out and eager to be free of the city. However the ride across the bay was a long one and he was pretty much confined to the large ferry. At least it offered a few distractions, lots of trainers traveled this route though Jace hadn't done much in the way of battling.
He considered taking a moment to get to know the two pokemon he'd acquired when stealing his bike. While in town Jace had met with an old associate who was able to hack the ownership chips in the pokeballs. Thus ownership was transferred to the boy so that nobody would question him as the absol and purrloin's trainer. Still, the pokemon themselves could be a problem.
But he reconsidered as the ferry was quite crowded at the moment. With the freezing temperatures it seemed more trainers had opted for the ferry option rather than using a ride pokemon, if they had one. Jace figured he'd try to find a quietish spot to wait the trip out. Carefully he picked his way across the deck and headed for the interior as it was bound to be warmer in there and the boy had yet to pick up anything extra clothing other than his old hoodie. He'd been too focused on getting out of Plum to take time to get some winter clothes.
The teen managed to find a bench just on the inside of the deck doorway. Seemed no one wanted this spot due to its proximity to the sliding door. At least it helped blocked some of the wind that had picked up. It was likely this trip would be quite miserable.
Sitting just inside the door Jace had a pretty good view of the deck. The boy wasn't too interested in leaving his spot though and was content to watch whatever happened by.
One such thing was a corsola that happened to drift up onto the deck and was gradually making their way to the other side. Jace frowned and watched the ghostly coral pokemon's progress. It seemed quite pleased with itself as it hopped along the deck spooking a few of the folks who happened to be out watching the waves in this cold weather.
Zag poked his head out from Jace's hoodie and let his tongue loll as he too watched the odd little ghost. But neither of them moved, quite content to remain where they are for the moment. Jace leaned back and sighed as he snuggled Zag closer to his body. The boy was tempted to doze off right here as that would be a fitting way to travel but he was still a bit on edge.
While he was out of Plum that didn't necessarily mean that nobody was looking for him. His father still had connections in the other towns and a ferry trip from Plum to Bass seemed an obvious escape route. That was partially why the boy had waited and gone down to Cherry Town first, the other part was not thinking clearly and out of desperation.
So for the time being he'd have to stay awake and alert, just in case. The trip would likely be rather boring though Jace was kind of glad to just be able to sit and think a little without having to worry, well as much anyway.
Drowsiness was quick to strike when you least expected it. The vague warmth of the ferry cabin finally succeeded in lulling Jace into nodding off for a bit. Zag however was not tired in the least. The little orange raccoon crawled out of the boy's hoodie and hopped onto the decking. Zag wasn't exactly the brightest bulb in the bunch and tended to go after whatever shiny thing he saw.
The ghost from before had made the zigzagoon curious about what else lurked off the side of the ship. He happily slipped out the sliding door and began wandering the outer deck. The zigzagoon darted from side to side sniffing around for signs of life. Pretty much everybody had crowded inside as a light sprinkle had started up. Zag didn't care however and was happily wriggling along the deck rail.
Over the edge the orange raccoon noticed a shellder. Excitedly the raccoon pokemon yipped at the little shellder and wagged his tail. Likely he would've tried to jump off if the shellder hadn't suddenly launched a water gun right into Zag's face. The zigzagoon looked shocked and growl angrily as the shellder flopped back into the water. With Zag's angry yips and his obvious warmth missing from the teen, Jace awoke from his snooze. He glanced around worriedly until he spotted the raccoon with his head shoved through a gap in the railing.
Jace rolled his eyes and got up to hurry outside and grab hold of his orange raccoon... just in time for it to start pouring down rain and for lightning to streak across the sky. "Really Zag? Jace stated with a groan as they hurried back inside.
Of course as soon as he got back in Jace found his seat had been taken. The ensuing storm had driven anybody else that might've been on the outer deck inside. The boy grumbled as he cradled Zag under one arm and wandered further into the cabin to try and find another vacant seat. The waves rocked the ferry side to side making a few passengers rather motion sick. It also seemed to dislodge some apricorns, likely from someone's pack, which Jace quietly pocketed.
Unable to find any free seating the boy at least found some wall space. He leaned against a nearby window and watched the storm rage around them. Being trapped on the large ferry in the middle of the channel in this weather wasn't exactly reassuring. Jace wasn't exactly afraid of storms but he'd never really been a fan, or a fan of boats for that matter. The teen much preferred keeping his feet firmly on the ground.
Zag whined not liking being restrained. He of course kept wanting to wander and explore. The weather was completely lost on the naive little zigzagoon. The ferry was a decent size and there was always the lower deck to explore, but Jace wanted the comfort of feeling as if he could easily escape, if need be. Really though a ferry in the middle of the water didn't provide one with many escape avenues.
He just hoped the trip would be quick and they could make their way into Bass and get further into east Arciel. While Jace intended to challenge the gyms at some point, for the moment his plan was just putting as much distance between Plum and himself. When he was ready he'd venture back and try for the Plum and Bass gyms.
It seemed that the storm was beginning to pass. The waves died down and the rain dropped to a drizzle. The clouds still remained however and though still afternoon things looked rather dark outside. Of course in the middle of winter it always seemed to get dark fairly early. The cloud cover didn't help any either.
Jace could just make out a light flicking in and out in the darkness. From his position at the window he had a good view of the icy waters around them. Zag of course had his face pressed up against the glass and was watching every little thing with interest. The bobbing was especially interesting. He whined very much wanting to go out and explore but Jace shook his head.
"Zag, even if we were on the deck you couldn't follow the light, it's in the middle of the sea." The teen explained. Zag huffed not entirely convinced, he could swim after all couldn't he? Jace just sighed noticing the light bobbing a bit closer, enough so he could make out the chinchou.
"See? It's just a chinchou, that's all." He stated though Zag didn't seem to care either way. Hey a new pokemon was just as interesting as mysterious bouncing lights right? THe teen rolled his eyes and ruffled Zag's ears. "Look next time something comes on deck I'll let you go meet it okay? But remember not all wild pokemon want to make friends." Jace reminded the overenthusiastic zigzagoon but was pretty sure his efforts were rather futile.
Jace's stomach began to rumble and the boy checked the time. It was already noon though it felt like he'd been on this boat forever. The teen set his bag down and knelt down to begin digging around in it. The boat rocked a little and Jace had to quickly steady himself with his free hand. Zag however managed to wriggle free and knocked one of his pokeballs loose.
Out popped Nik who eagerly began sniffing around the cabin. Jace quickly reached out for the nickit but she was already getting into someone's pack and wrapped her jaws around a luxury ball.
"Hey gimmie that." Jace muttered quietly trying to avoid anyone noticing. Nik however darted down the cabin stairs and into the lower deck. The teen groaned and got to his feet. Zag had been sitting watching the two in fascination having found something to keep him entertained now.
"Zag, come on, help me catch Nik." The boy called as he grabbed his pack and ran after the wayward fox. Jace had wanted to keep it lowkey while on the ferry but it looked like the dark fox had her own ideas about things. She wanted to be loose and, like Zag, to explore and get into things she shouldn't.
This of course was all conray to what Jace wanted and the teen could only chase after her and hope they didn't bother anyone. Still, the nickit had a good nose for shinies, just like her trainer. The boy wouldn't really complain if a few extra trinkets ended up in his pack.
Nik lead Jace on a merry chase down through the lower level right to the edge of the ferry where one could almost reach out and touch the water. Down here was where the vehicles of ferry passengers were kept.
The teen quickly launched himself at the sly fox and managed to pin her in place. Nik yipped irritably but soon stopped struggling when she realized she wasn't going to be able to wriggle out of Jace's grip. She whined and leaned back to lick his face in hopes of persuading him to release her.
"Hey cut that out, you know you asked for this."
He scolded the fox while Zag sat down and watched with a blissful grin on his face. He seemed to be enjoying all the excitement and didn't care about the trouble Nik had been causing. The zigzagoon was soon distracted by a ruckus going on just off the side of the ferry.
Jace too soon heard the sound and frowned as he stood and moved onto the deck's edge. In the water a small lapras was being harassed by a bruxish. The boy and two pokemon watched a moment before Jace narrowed his eyes and yelled out at the psychic fish.
"Hey you, leave him alone!"
Nik and Zag both looked up at Jace who frowned. He reached into a pocket and pulled out Tic's pokeball. The huge electric bug appeared on the deck and chitered at the boy before turning to look toward the water. Jace pointed at the bruxish then looked to Tic.
"Tic, can you reach that bruxish with your Electroweb?"
The bug blinked at the teen then focused on the aggressive fish. He narrowed his eyes and electric sparks flew from his fur as he charged up the Electroweb. Tic fired off the web of electrical energy and snagged the bruxish. Bruxish struggled against the webbing and turned to glare at the boy and his pokemon.
The psychic fish fired off a strong stream of water that knocked Tic back and soaked him. The electric bug sputtered and chittered angrily at the bruxish. The lapras watched in surprise at the boy intervening. He hadn't expected any assistance from a human. The lapras turned and fired off his own stream of water, dousing the bruxish throughly. The water attack however wasn't very strong and the bruxish just scowled back at the lapras and smacked him with an Astonish.
"Try another Electroweb Tic."
The teen instructed and the bug quickly fired up another burst of electric webbing. The bruxish wasn't looking too hot now though he spit more water at the bug. Nik yipped at the fish from Jace's arms likely wanting to get in on this fight. The boy frowned but cautiously let the fox down. Nik lunged forward right into the water and went to town beating up the fish.
The beat down left the psychic fish cold and Nik happily treaded water for a moment before the grateful lapras swam over to give her a lift back to the boat. Jace knelt down and scooped the sopping fox back on the deck and sighed.
"Have fun did we?"
Nik yipped in response looking pleased with herself. Tic shook himself, the bug was thoroughly soaked as well. Jace turned to the lapras and dipped his head.
"Hey I hope you're okay Lapras. You take care now okay?"
He gave the water type a smile and a wave before turning back to tend to his drippy pokemon. Looks like he was going to have to find them some towels.
The teen set off in search of towels to dry off his soggy teammates. Out in the water he noted a clamperl that seemed to be following their progress across the deck. Suddenly he started spraying the group with Water Gun and now drenching everyone before disappearing into a whirlpool back into the water.
"Seriously!? What was that for?"
Jace grumbled as he too was now completely wet. Fortunately they came across one of the ferry staff who directed them to a linen closet next to the bathrooms. The teen went ahead and into the cramped, public showers, they ferry did have a pool on it, where everybody got a bath.
Tic wasn't sure about this though once the electric bug knew the water and soap wasn't going to hurt he seemed to enjoy himself. Zag had had baths before and was quite thrilled to play in the stream of the shower and splash the others with soapy water. Jace however had to grip Nik hard as the dark fox didn't want to have anything to do with the shower even though she'd just gone swimming in the ocean with no issues.
But after a good half hour or so everybody was clean and Jace used a hair dryer to mostly dry his clothes and the rest of the team. Now dry and content the teen was hoping they rest of their trip would be a little less eventful.

Jace was about ready for this miserable boat ride to be over. The teen had recalled everybody but Zag as he was getting tired of having to chase them all over the ship. Nik was definitely a handful and he had really just wanted this to be a nice, relaxing trip, maybe get in a nap. The male checked his watch, it had gotten late and the ferry was still only about halfway through to Bass. So he figured he'd set out in search of some food.
This ferry wasn't quite the luxury cruise line as some of the other options. The trip across the route 3 channel also shouldn't take as long but the storm had delayed them some. But this ferry still provided some of the basic facilities of the nicer cruise ships. Everything was designed to cater to the trainers and tourists that traveled the region. It was pretty nice, at least Jace could eat for free due to his trainer registration.
Before leaving the lockers however, he spotted a strange blue egg shoved in a corner and under a towel. The youth stared at it bewildered and bent down to pick it up. He glanced around and didn't see anyone else in the locker right now, this wasn't exactly swimming weather, then shrugged and stuck the egg in his pack before heading out.
Upon arriving at the small galley he unfortunately bumped into an older male coming out of the dining room, dressed in nothing but swim trunks. The dude grumbled at Jace and roughly pushed the teen's shoulder almost knocking him back. Jace looked up and frowned.
"Watch where you're going kid."
Zag had resumed his place tucked up inside Jace's oversized hoodie and when he felt the stranger's hand push Jace the zigzagoon snaked his head out and snapped at the guy's fingers. Jace couldn't help a chuckle which only seemed to piss the guy off more.
"Hey! Tell your little orange rodent to watch it's mouth!"
The teen tensed and he could feel Zag growing restless. He poked his nose out from under the hoodie and stared daggers at swim shorts dude. Jace reached up and patted Zag's head almost instantly bringing back the zigzagoon's carefree spirit. He still kept a close eye on the guy though.
"Look man, sorry for bumping into you, but leave Zag out of it."
The teen snapped as the shirtless dude scoffed. The stranger brandished a pokeball at the youth who looked a little uncertain as he realized the implication. Jace hadn't really been in many battles before. Sure a few skirmishes here and there whilst in his old gang but a straight up trainer battle?
"Well why don't you make me. I, Nilam, hereby challenge you to a three on three battle!"
Jace gawked at the dude, that was a weirdly formal battle challenge. He wondered if this dude was some preppy jock or something when not dressed in only swim trunks. Zag gave a toothy grin to the stranger and wagged his tail furiously. The teen hesitated then shrugged.
"Okay, I guess."
Jace wasn't sure what else to say, backing out of a battle challenge was generally considered bad form, not that he cared in the slightest about that. But he also didn't want to be painted a coward. Jace was trying to keep a low profile but also wanted to try and build a better reputation as a trainer.
Nilam tossed out a pokeball and out popped the pink eel, coiled on the deck and looking a bit out of sorts. Nilam gave Jace a cocky smirk then gestured for him to send out his pokemon. The teen could tell Zag wanted a go but felt he'd let Nik give this a chance.
"Sorry buddy. Here Nik, Tail Whip?"
"Ha, you're going to have to be more confident if you want to battle. Whirlpool let's go!"
Nilam at least seemed to know what he was doing. Jace just gave Nik an uncertain smile and the dark fox just sighed before getting trapped in a sudden vortex of water. She flailed and sputtered but managed to turn and shake her rear at the gorebyss taunting her. Though Jace was at least familiar with pokemon attacks and the general mechanics of battle, he still didn't get how shaking your tail at something lowered their defenses.
"Okay Nik, keep it up for a bit longer."
"Whirlpool, and keep 'em coming Gorebyss!"
Jace wasn't sure if the gorebyss could even use another attack. He checked the pokedex app on his phone and learned the gorebyss probably knew confusion as well but alas confusion would have no affect on Nik. He'd unwittingly trapped Nilam into only being able to use one move.
The two went a couple of rounds, Nik taking the brunt of the damage. Jace was hoping to get a bit of an advantage over the gorebyss with tail whip but this meant the gorebyss was able to freely deal damage. Jace just hoped his plan paid off. Surprisingly on the third round, Nik managed to avoid an incoming whirlpool even if she was still trapped by water.
Now seemed the time. Nik was thoroughly soaked, again, but she was also royally pissed not being asked to do anything but withstand the water and whip her tail around. She shot Jace an irritated glance and the teen nodded and gave her a half smile.
"Okay, okay. Feel free to beat the thing up."
"What? Ah Gorebyss, just keep the pressure on!"
Nik seemed thrilled to at last be able to strike. She broke through the swirling vortext of water, slipped around the new wave of whirlpool then just pummeled the crap out of the gorebyss. Jace watched wide eyed as she gave the eel a serious beat down. Nilam looked stunned as well and stomped his foot irritably.
"Hey! Stop that! Gorebyss don't let them get away with that!"
"Alright! That was great! Wow, um, Quick Attack?"
Quick as a flash Nik darted forward and smacked into the gorebyss. The pink eel quickly retaliated with another wave of whirlpool and again trapped the poor dark fox. Nik wasn't having though and before Jace could call it she circled around and charged with another quick attack, laying the gorebyss out cold. The teen blinked as that battle ended. He grinned a little in surprise and called the dripping wet Nik back to her ball after giving her well deserved praise.
"Wow that was awesome. You did a fine job girl, now take a rest."
"Bah! You got lucky. Just so you know, Gorebyss was my weakest pokemon. I doubt you'll pull that off with my Finneon!"
Jace watched a new pokemon appear before him. The small fish drifted about in an orb of water just a few inches off the wooden deck. Nik had already gone through a battle and needed rest and he still wanted to hold Zag back. Jace fished around in his pocket then tossed out Tic's ball.
"Looks like it's you're turn Tic. Let's try Thunder Wave."
"Ha! Look at that tiny thing. You think that's going to beat my finneon? HIt 'em with Pound!"
Nilam smirked then looked to his little fish and gestured to Tic. The electric bug blinked at the fish floating in front of him. Tic gave a little wave before the fish suddenly charged him and smacked him with her tail. Tic was caught by surprise and tiny sparks flew from his body. A wave of electricity flew from him and engulfed the finneon paralyzing her.
"What? That's cheating!"
Jace glanced up at Nilam who was seething. The teen shrugged, he knew using Thunder Wave wasn't at all cheating. He looked back to the battle and smiled a little at Tic who was already flinging an electroweb around the finneon. And despite her efforts, Finneon was unable to overcome the electrical paralysis this time.
"Great job Tic. Now try to regain a little of your health back."
"Come on Finneon, Pound, Pound, Pound!"
The electric bug hopped up onto the finneon and began draining some of her health away. However she managed to wriggle free of the paralysis for a moment and tried smacking the bug away. Tic fortunately hopped off and scurried out of the fish's range. He switched back to electroweb wrapping her up further in the electrified webbing. This time though when Finneon overcame her paralysis she was able to get in a good smack on Tic. But the bug jumped her again and absorbed her remaining health, leaving the fish unconscious on the decking.
"Hey you did it Tic!"
"Hmph, well fine try my Spheal on for size!"
Out popped a happy little spheal who gazed around at the group with a wide smile and barked a hello to Jace and Tic. The teen couldn't help smiling back at the rotund pokemon and wondered how he ended up with such a grouch, their auras were almost exact opposites. Tic chittered at Jace and the youth nodded.
"Right well, same as before Tic. Thunder Wave!"
"Ah come on! Quick Spheal, Defense Curl!"
Tic was easily quicker than the fat spheal and released that familiar wave of electrical energy. The poor little spheal's muscles seized up but he managed to curl into a tight ball in an attempt to bolster his defenses. Jace frowned, Tic's best moves against the spheal were all special types, raising physical defense wouldn't help, would it?
"Once again, Electroweb then Absorb!"
"Ah ha now Spheal, Rollout! And keep it going!"
Jace was getting a little more confident in his commands though now he could see what Nalim was doing. Rollout was only made stronger by defense curl plus the rock move would be quite effective against poor Tic. Both pokemon initiated their attacks, Tic flinging electric webs all over Spheal but was practically run over by the rollout.
Tic switched tactics after taking damage and hopped on Spheal to absorb some of his health. This caused the spheal to lose his target and miss with the second wave of rollout. But as soon as Tic hopped back off and began electro webbing it up again the spheal was immediately back into rollout. Tic felt a little squashed but he grabbed hold of the spheal as he rolled over him and managed to drain the last of his health.
It had been rather close there but Tic had proven to have superior electrical power. He crawled over to Jace who bent down and congratulated the bug before returning him to his pokeball. Nalim looked shocked then narrowed his eyes as he recalled Spheal.
"Hmph, if it wasn't for your stupid electric bug we've kicked your hide all over this deck."
"Um... okay? Well I'm gonna go now..."
Jace awkwardly turned and slipped into the galley leaving Nalim to rant about his loss. The teen sighed and shook his head as he gathered food for himself and his pokemon. He'd eat first then try to find some place quiet to feed the others.
Off the side of the galley Jace noted a huntail swimming about in the growing darkness. The huntail seemed to be totally disinterested in the ferry and Jace turned his attention on gathering a plate of food. Satisfied with what he had the teen snuck back down to the lower deck and found a secluded spot where he and his pokemon could eat without being distrubed.
Jace checked on the egg in his pack before setting his stuff down on a bench then put his food beside him. He released Tic first and gave the joltik a small bowl of pokemon food. Zag wriggled out from his hoodie though the orange raccoon looked strangely different now. Jace blinked in surprised when he realize that Zag had evolved.
"Whoa Zag? Wait, when did you evolve?"
The teen gawked at the linoone confused but Zag just wagged his tail and grinned at him in his usual blank manner. Jace just shook his head and gave the linoone his food. The teen looked at the three pokeballs remaining. He was a little wary of letting Nik out just yet. She was likely to go running off on him again. Still she'd need to eat.
"Zag? Help me keep an eye on Nik okay?"
He asked of the linoone who stared at him blankly, his muzzle covered with pokemon food. The teen sighed but released the nickit anyway. She yipped and began sniffing around Tic's pokemon food. Jace whistled to her and waved her bowl to get her attention.
"Hey Nik, this one here is yours."
Jace set it before her and the dark fox quickly dug in though she kept sneaking greedy looks at the other's bowls. Now it was down to the last two pokeballs, the ones he'd 'found' on the bike he 'borrowed'. Well this was as good a time as any to see how these two reacted to their change in ownership.
From the first ball appeared a purrloin. The dark feline stretched then looked around and took note of the food the others were eating. She turned a lidded gaze to Jace and the food the youth was offering her. She hissed, took the food and shoved herself into a dark corner to greedily eat the provided meal.
"Ookay then."
A purrloin, well that would be nice. Jace did like dark types. He wasn't real picky when it came to pokemon but dark types were a favored type. Now he wondered what awaited him in the second ball. Carefully he released it and gapped a little in surprise at the absol that stood before him.
The absol blinked slowly then scanned his surroundings. His piercing gaze landed on Jace and he growled as he eyed the teen. Jace tried not to stare back at him and just looked at the floor and held out the bowl of food. The absol continued to growl ignoring the food, until Zag trotted over and sat down in front of him. The linoone wagged his tail happily and let his tongue loll.
Now the absol growled at Zag but after a moment leaned forward and sniffed him. Zag gave a soft yip then rolled over on his back and waved his paws up at the absol's face. Now the white canid looked from Zag to Jace with a wtf look. Jace chuckled a little as he set the food on the floor and slid it toward the absol with his foot.
"Look I know I'm not who you were expecting but..."
Jace hesitated as he mulled over what exactly to say to these two. While he wanted to be honest he doubted they'd be very pleased with what he'd have to say to them. He pursed his lips for a moment then continued deciding a little white lie would make this smoother.
"Your trainer, he let me, um, borrow his bike and forgot to mention he'd left your pokeballs in the bike's satchel. And when I found out I tried to return the pokeballs but he said I ought to just keep them."
The teen wasn't sure his lie was going to fly by the way the absol was looking at him. Jace tried to maintain a straight face, lying wasn't all that hard if you didn't over think it or panic. Of course that wasn't easy when an absol was staring you down. The white canid narrowed his eyes and dragged the bowl of food toward him. He still kept a wary eye on Jace but began nibbling away at the food. Jace let out a breath as he turned to his own food only to find Nik happily munching away at his entree.
"No! Nik that's mine, you go eat yours."
Jace let out a haggered sigh and shoved the nickit back in front of her bowl that was nearly untouched. The teen groaned as he picked up his plate then grumbled as he ate around what Nik had already eaten. Oh well, he could probably grab some more later if he needed.
