The dense Weeping Forest was white as snow, drenched from a fall very recently. Gabe had seen easily from the back of Reptar as they made their way there. It was a beautiful scene but treacherous for anyone trying to traverse it.
What was more dangerous, though, was the wind that seemed to blow over it and threaten anything that flew there. “Drop me down for now,” Gabe finally ordered when Rep seemed to struggle to both keep in the air and not smash into anything. The Charizard grumbled before finally dropping downwards. When they landed at the near front of the Weeping Forest, Gabe got off and returned the beast substituting instead for Clopper the Gogoat.
Clopper shivered on being released but immediately perked up again on seeing Gabe. The latter smiled and reached up a hand to pat her nose. “Just a quick run through the forest, and we should be fine…” he commented. She gave a small nod and waited for him to climb on before starting through the snow. Even though it was treacherous, a mountain goat could make it well enough. She was a Grass type, but that didn’t make her entirely averse to the cold.
They walked like that, both alert but moving with purpose towards the end of it.

A shadow on the trees seemed to extend and suddenly sprang up in front of Clopper. The startled Gogoat yelped and reared, nearly throwing Gabe right off. The latter immediately leaned forward seizing the feathery neck ruffles of the Gogoat to keep from hitting the ground. “Clopper????” Gabe’s voice broke in a breath. The Gogoat leaned forward again and stomped a little right after. Slowly, Gabe sat up again to see just what it was.
A Gengar stood there chuckling at his work. Gabe did a couple take but nope there it was: a giant purple ghost, one of his favorites not claimed by a certain ex. A grin slowly pulled across his face as he climbed down from Clopper. “Mind using Aerial Ace?” he asked. The Gogoat gave a nod and lunged forward at the ghost. Slash! The hooves of the Gogoat charged with air cut into the Gengar.
The Gengar yelped startled and backed up a moment. This was getting serious now, as he realized. First off, though, he was going to try and Disable that move. It was annoying and needed to go. A purple light seemed to enlarge off the Gengar in response aiming for the Gogoat. “Clopper, out of the way!” Gabe called. “Jump and leech seed it!” The Gogoat bounced back from the expanding darkness throwing out a shake of mane and defiance before spitting seeds at the Gengar. The Gengar, however, was quick to disappear into his shadow again avoiding the seeding and retaliating in turn with a more sinister attack: Shadow Punch. “Clopper! Block with Aerial Ace!” Gabe thought quick and acted quicker. The air move collided and slammed into the punch.
Backing up and scowling, the Gengar seemed hesitant. Gabe was not, though, and was immediately throwing a Heal Ball at it.
The Pokeball smacked into the Gengar and drew his essence in. Hitting the ground right after, it rocked fiercely from side to side. Gabe waited a moment with a careful eye, but when it finally dinged in capture, he eased again. “Good work, Clopper,” he smiled a little softer looking back at her. The Gogoat preened a little happily. She did enjoy a good battle now and again! “Are you still feeling ok enough to ride?” The Gogoat nodded, and Gabe nodded. Climbing back up again, Gabe settled briefly before they were off down the road once more. The clouds overhead were starting to become darker and darker. They needed to make it through before the rain hit!

As he and Clopper moved down the path, ever winding, ever growing, Gabe would catch sight of a strange person walking through the snow. Their hair was dark, scraggly, and seemed to just sort of flow into the dark dress they were also wearing. They looked… kind of like they were trying to be the personification of darkness, honestly, and if that wasn’t a mood sometimes, Gabe didn’t know what was. The person looked back as Gabe approached. Clopper’s hooves were too loud to go unheard. The person made a hand gesture, and Gabe found himself slowing Clopper to a walk. Clopper… did not want to slow to a walk but complied, for now.
“My, my, my, I see your soul is practically shining today rider…” the strange person smiled. “My name is Malie of the Weeping Forest… Who are you?”
Oh, oh boy… Gabe bit the inside of his mouth and forced a smile. “Call me Gabe…. Clopper and I just traveling through….” he assured. The hex manic stared at him critically, her eyes bouncing a little from the Gogoat to Gabe and then back again. Gabe frowned harder at the scrutiny. “Can I help you with something?”
“Yours is a soul that needs refinement… the ancient spirits tell me so,” the hex manic went on.
Gabe tilted his head to one side and managed to keep up a friendly smile. Clearly… clearly he should not have slowed or even stopped, but he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t intrigued by such a statement. What did she know about him? Nothing, probably. What was she guessing about him? Oh anything and everything. “Doubtful,” he answered still. The hex manic glanced up to him again and frowned this time.
“Do battle with me, then. Let’s see your soul’s connections with your Pokemon!”
“…..” Gabe had deadpanned at that point. He really really really didn’t want to be doing this, and the option to just have Clopper dead run away was becoming more enticing by the second… But just the same some desire to battle was in him…. Had never really left him. “Fine….” he answered starting to ease of Clopper. The latter seemed stunned and kept stomping her foot on the ice in protest. Gabe! This was not a good idea! Do not interreact! She repeated, do not interact! But Gabe had already made up his mind for the moment. “Show me what Pokemon you have first….”
The hex manic had started to giggle madly at that point and immediately fished a Pokeball from her person. “Go! My spirit!” she called releasing a— very, very, very large burning Marowak. Now, Gabe had a Marowak, specifically this Fire-Ghost variant. He had caught it of his own volition and with his own power…And he was not a Pokemon thief in the slightest… But for a moment, just a moment, he imagined how nice it would be to have another one just like his already but large. And when that moment passed, he was back to himself again. A Pokeball was fished out, and Gabe tossed it forward. “Rep, come battle….”
“Ohhhh yes your soul burns with a passion locked inside! A fire of li—”
“Shadow Claw, Rep,” came the order, and suddenly the Charizar was clawing through the Marowak with fierce sharp claws. The Marowak yelped and fell backwards for a moment. The hex manic looked equal parts alarmed and distraught. A glow from Rep, though, would catch both of their attentions. What was that… “Rep, are you ok?” the Charizard growled. He felt ok? “Good, Shadow Claw again!” came the order. But thr Charizard didn’t move.
And the hex manic went wild. “Ahhahahahah you were trapped by my curse! Or rather Marowak’s cursed body!” she jeered. Gabe immediately frowned. So that’s what that light had been. Fine then. “
“Burn it to pieces instead… Heat Wave,” Gabe ordered. Rep roared and spewed flames and heated air out of his maw at the Marowak, the latter was blown back but took the damage well.
“Screech, my pretty!” the Hex manic called. The Marowak let out an ear-splitting scream. Gabe and Rep winced.
“Dragon Rush,” Gabe went on, and the Charizard shined blue with power before rushing forward to slam into the Marowak. That one did it causing the Marowak to stumble and struggle back up.
“Now Thrash!” The Hex manic called. The Marowak started to thrash, and Rep took harsh frontal damage. Clopper winced and whined. Gabe grimaced all the more. They needed to finish this up quickly. That thrash was only going to get worse.
“Dragon Rush again,” Gabe ordered. Reptar roared in response slamming into the Marowak again even while meeting another Thrash. Thankfully, the Dragon Rush was just enough. They landed on opposite sides, Reptar growling and forcing himself to standing… the Marowak …. Not.
“Noooo my pretty!” the hex manic cried as they ran to the Marowak to check on it. Gabe sighed and glanced back to Rep. He was really worse for wear from that combination of moves, but he was standing, and that was what mattered. For now, as the Marowak was recalled, Gabe would recall Rep as well. “You may have won that round but you won’t win this one! Go! Golurk!” The hex manic released a giant wall golem this time, and Gabe was thankful that he’d returned Rep.
This thing had some obvious weaknesses and— “Clopper?” he called back. The Gogoat gave a nod and leapt forward. This fight was much like the last with a Type advantage in place. What was nicer, though, was a well-timed leech seed managed to grasp the Golurk and steadily widdle down its strength over time. Even when Clopper couldn’t get in an attack herself, she was always receiving more power. When the Golurk too fell, the hex manic fell to hysterics and started flailing about…
…And Gabe was about done with that, climbed on Clopper, and had her run for it.

They traveled for quite a while before breaking again, this time to rest for a little while longer than before. Gabe returned Clopper and released Liz who set to work on hunting down logs and building a fire. Gabe sat down by it, and after she was done, Liz sat down next to him. They were quiet for a while just watching the flames.
It was then… that something moved. Lizbeth immediately startled her head snapping back and upwards to a large tree behind her. Gabe startled right after turning in tandem to see what was wrong and— That was… that was a very large Bug Pokemon there in the trees of all places. Lizbeth crouched, but the Scolipede didn’t attack or even approach. It remained…unmoving, unblinking, just.. watching carefully.
Gabe looked from Liz to the Scolipede and then back again. “Why don’t you come down from there… enjoy the warmth for a while?” Gabe invited. The Scolipede seemed to slowly climb down and do just that staring at the flames silently. Gabe smirked a little. If it was a moth, it would have been a lot more poetic than this. “It’s a rather mean winter isn’t it?” Gabe mused softly. The Scolipede let out a strange trill noise back. Liz snorted softly at whatever was said. Gabe smirked.
They talked for a while— or rather Gabe did, and after that, he finally decided to make a move. “Why don’t you come with us?” he asked holding out a Pokeball.
As the Scolipede made his decision and pressed the Pokeball, Gabe couldn’t help but grin. The ball dinged in capture without even a moment’s hesitation and then immediately shined white as it disappeared off to his PC again. “See, Liz? Sometimes we just have to ask nicely,” Gabe snickered softly. The fire lizard rolled her eyes and growled softly to herself before going back to tending the fire. Gabe looked back into it and breathed in a little deeper. It was warm and comfortable, and he would curl up by it and sleep for a bit if allowed to… actually. “Liz I’m gonna nap…. Make sure I don’t freeze, ok?” Gabe snickered. Liz rolled her eyes but grunted out an assurance that she’d wake him soon. With that, he rested for a bit.
“Argh Charrrrr! Rar! Charrrrrr! Arrrrghghghgh!!!!” It was the sound of a fight. Bodies rolling along the ground slamming into rocks, gravel, trees and who knew what else was but the undertone beneath the furious noses of two furious Fire Pokemon duking it out.
Gabe grimaced as the din pulled him from sleep. What… what was going on— was he still dreaming or— Yellow eyes blinked a couple of times back into reality, and the world slowly came into focus. From his sideways sight, he watched two bodies roll by as they punched and kicked and bit one another all at once. “The heck….” What was he looking at??? Gabe sat up, and one fire lizard looked over and hissed causing Gabe to jolt a little even as the second one took the moment of distraction to bite the other one. “Liz???” The second lizard snarled and finally raised a claw to spark with electricity and slam it down on the other—
Which caused the entire illusion to finally snap. Gabe blinked a couple of times on finding Liz had not pinned another of her own but rather a Zoroark…. Right then and tehre. The latter looked alarmed at having been caught and pinned so and struggled aggressively now trying to get away. “My…. my my,” Gabe hummed a little as he got up and smirked fishing out a Premier Ball and dropping it on the Zoroark.
The Premier ball sucked in the Zoroark and flailed a little even as it hit the ground. Gabe squinted at it waiting. Lizbeth growled low in her throat ready to throw down again if it failed, but just as it seemed ready to pop, the ball dinged in capture. Both human and lizard breathed a sigh of relief. “Did it attack you or something? I was sleeping….” Gabe slowly smirked sideways at Lizbeth.
‘It actually went after you’
Gabe froze on hearing that thought clear as day ringing in his head. “…Liz….” She frowned back at him not sure what was wrong. Gabe shook his head and reached a hand up to his head, fingers pressing against his temple. Did I just imagine that or…
Liz startled this time and immediately backed up. “What??” Wait… had she just heard… and had he heard….
It wasn’t a mistake. He could hear her thoughts, and she could hear his—somewhat, sometimes, some-how. Liz’s mental voice was… a lot more sarcastic than Gabe would ever have imagined it to be, but after a few short minutes, he realized he could never imagine it any different ever again. She found his thoughts to be shorter than his spoken words and couldn’t decide if that was funny or stupid.
‘Can you hear this? ‘ Gabe grinned.
Liz rolled her eyes. ‘I can, but you can also speak and I understand you.’
‘Yeah but this is a lot clearer….Kind of like talking to— I need to let Harriet know…’
‘Better hurry on to the next town then…’
Gabe snorted. Liz smirked. ‘You know you’re big enough to ride…’
Liz snorted and rolled her eyes. ‘Wait till I’m bigger…’ Gabe felt his features fall some but nodded. Well, at least he had Clopper with him, anyways. ‘Do you want to rest for now…’ Liz thought about it before deciding yes, that would be reasonable. Gabe returned her and put out the fire before releasing Clopper. Reaching out his mind for her, though, he found… nothing. No voice, no sound. She stared at him and tilted her head to one side.
“Ah, sorry, was staring off into space….” Clopper rolled her eyes before bending own to pick up a ball she’d guessed he’d dropped, hand it to him (much to his confusion), and then wait for him to get on and ride again. They still had a distance to get to Ash. And these woods weren’t perfectly safe.
For long time, the thudding sound of Clopper’s hooves on the ground and snow was all that Gabe heard for miles. The birds had shut down for the winter. Things that crawled upon the ground were still and carefully in waiting. The only thing that was assuredly alive were the massive trees, and even many of them were bare this time of year. The longer they went on, the longer Gabe felt that… something wasn’t quite right. He couldn’t put his finger on it but… it was there in the back of his mind, an itch he couldn’t scratch. Something was wrong… but what?
And then he saw it— It had moved too late this time when his head had turned, and Gabe had gawked for a good solid second before it had moved. “Clopper,” Gabe had stated suddenly causing the Gogoat to stop in her run and look back at him. Gabe’s eyes, however, didn’t return to hers. He was staring at the clear as day purple mixed with the brown and the gray now. What could have been mistaken as snow was very clearly a whaft of Pokemon. A Drifblim was staring at him.
Yikes…. Gabe knew the stories of Drifloon and Drifblim very well, actually, and even if they were purple they were… dangerous. These things actively tried to steal children and take their souls elsewhere and Arceus knew what else and…. No. No his hands weren’t shaking. No he wasn’t unnerved. He was fine. He was just…. Just reaching for a Pokeball and releasing Rep to get ready in case this thing attacked, clearly. It didn’t have to, though. “Rep, Shadow Claw!” Gabe’s voice broke, and the battle was unexpectedly on.
It helped that even if they didn’t have a straight up Type advantage, Rep had a move that ahd one against this thing. A couple of good swipe-hits in, and the Drifblim was fleeing from the aggressive Charizard. Rep himself took a Payback, a Strength Sap, and a Phantom Force to the chest, shoulders, and face respectively but still managed to show off in this case just how dangerous his species was on the whole. Once the Drifblim had fled, though, Gabe was a little…. Leery about recalling Rep just yet. “If you’d stay out for a bit and fly around… look to see what else is around here, I’d appreciate it…” Gabe had spoken. Rep had never quite seen his trainer so… uncertain and decided for now he’d follow through on the request. Gabe was grateful, and that was enough.
