What a plain, boring, normie day. Real life, when not dressing up, or locked into a game, was just... kinda dull. Everywhere she looked when she went in town she was surrounded by strange, unfamiliar normies who probably wouldn't be able to tell team fortress 2 from battlefront- and that sickened her! It was 2020, and the last few days she'd practically locked herself in her room, save for watering her plants, for the yearly raids and dungeons across the current twelve MMOs she was rotating between- and it was literal torture-
When she'd found her alarm going off and woken up stiffly in her chair, Gaki had one of two thoughts- did she have some weird, normie activity planned that required her to leave her room for the day? Or... was the alarm set for some other reason? Gaki was clueless. Running a hand through hair that had no right to be as messy as it was, the lime eyed girl pushed herself up from her chair, managing to crack her back a little before grabbing at her phone to stop the loud, repetitive noise that would probably haunt her for days to come.
Stupid phone! It took way too long to turn off, and even then she didn't understand why the alarm was lavelled 100 EXP GAINED - LEVEL UP DAY. A grumble was all that left the girls lips, followed by her throwing her phone across the room to land on her bed, she could deal with that... probably later.
But... she was kinda hungry- you know what, she'd just grab a packet of cheese puffs and go back to the raids, just your usual January the 8th, not like she'd actually forgotten her birthday or anything.
As Gaki went for cheese puffs, a particular smell would waft into her room of its own accord. A mix of eggs, bacon, cheese, and waffles would all come in like a breath of tasty air. Downstairs, Sid had been up for about an hour then running the skillet, pan, and waffle maker all in tandem, humming a little under their breath.
Heairng movement above them, Sid glanced up at the ceiling briefly before calling upwards. “Gaki-chaaaan! You up? Come get some food!” They called before quickly starting to plate eggs, bacon, and a couple of waffles. Bending down into a lower door of the refrigerator, they pulled out some whipped cream and drew a happy face on the top waffle before adding a few chocolate chips for the eyes and a strawberry for the nose. Setting it down on the kitchen table, they were quick to arrange the small little multi-colored Happy Birthday sign they’d bought on the table before going back to plating the rest.
“Gakiiiii! Did you hear me?” they called again just in case before pouring another round into the waffle maker and flipping it, waiting for it to cook as they waited for Gaki to make it down the stairs.
She'd barely left her room when Sid's voice rang out- guess they were awake too, huh? Hell, knowing Sid they'd probably pulled an all nighter doing a raid or something and were getting some rice snacks- or they'd attempted to regain energy by going downstairs of all things for change of scenery. A hand was brought to rub at the girls eye as a drawn out yawn left her, it'd be cool, she could just grab a bite and tackle a dungeon for her morning pick-me-up-
Sid's voice called again and she managed to bite out a "Yeah yeah- comin'..." Before making her way down the stairs, going as slow as possible so she didn't physically trip and fail a quick-time event. Hand on the railing, the strong scent of... hella good food wafted through the air, invading her senses... Wh- this was weird?
At the bottom of the staircase now, it was needless to say that the silver haired girl was promptly confused, and a little alarmed at Sid cooking. Had somebody tainted the water with a daze potion?! Was there some evil NPC messing with Sid's focus as a player?! The girl deadpanned, nah, Sid was smarter than that. "...Uhhh..." Gaki blinked, she'd face the delectable enemy that she was sure was in the dining room right after she got the mission status from Sid, who looked wayyy too happy at such an inconsequential hour.
Lingering in the kitchen doorway, Gaki blinked once, twice, before mumbling "...What's the occasion? Did you get top hundred in the worldwide championships on Rankachuu or something?"
Post by Sidney Ridley on Jan 11, 2020 14:37:13 GMT
As the sounds of Gaki coming down the stairs stopped, Sid glanced sideways expectantly. What they would receive, though, was a deadpanned expression back. Sid’s brow quirked in response, and a smile pulled higher on their face. Had she forgotten? Sure enough that question assured them she had. Sid grinned.
“No, it’s a little more special than that,” they assured pulling open the waffle maker and pulling out a freshly baked one. “It’s a rare event that only comes once a year. The anniversary of your first breath of life is today.” Walking over and setting the waffle down on their own plate, they beamed. “You’re officially nineteen! Happy birthday, Gaki!”
...A little more special than making the top 100, worldwide, in one of the most well-recieved MMO's of the year?! And something that's making Sid grin like some sort of hero who's just saved a whole town from like... a gremlin attack and received the final trophy... Gaki struggled to think of something more special than that, although maybe that was just because it was stupid o' clock and her brain was running on the pure need for food. Watching sid pull out their own waffle and could only blink as they went on to further explain, and the girls mouth very quickly gaped open-
It was her birthday. The day whatever-her-mums name popped her out and named her after some japanese demon or whatever, how had she forgotten!? The surprise etched on her face must have been fairly evident, and so she quickly hurried to close her mouth and cover up her surprise with a cough, "...A-Ah!"
The fact Sid had both remembered and... cooked... what smelt like an entire cafe without the help of cooking mumma had her feeling more than slightly overwhelmed, what did she do to deserve such a high powered cousin like Sid?! Aaaaah, power on, Gaki! She pushed a hand over her mouth to cover up the wide grin that pushed at her face, and instead moved towards the dining table, eyes taking in the set-up before her, practically sparkling.
She was sure Sid was still wearing that stupid grin, and probably watching her take this all in with all the amusement possible- nuh uh! The girl eventually ripped her hand away from her mouth and instead pushed her way into the chair, biting down on her lip for a moment to hold back a stupidly large grin- she had higher defense than this! It was just... nice, for her birthday to be remembered, Sid's always been the only person to ever really... remember or celebrate it, her dad gave no shits and Sid's mum was probably faaar too busy to remember... ugh.
"I-It's not that... i'm happy or anythin- ack!" She managed out, eventually bringing her widened eyes backed to Sid and attempting her best neutral expression which... probably failed miserably. "....Just- hungry- my- uh- energy levels are... low."

A small laugh escaped from Sid. Gaki, Gaki, Gaki, you may have forgotten but not the most amazing Sidney Ridley. They grinned a little more after that. “Come and eat while it’s hot.” They hadn’t slaved over the bacon griller to serve cold food. As she sat down, they put in the last of the waffle mix and closed the maker before grabbing their plate and setting it down on the table. Walking back to the fridge, they bent down and grabbed a frozen coffee for themselves and a monster drink for her. No breakfast was perfect without a little gamer dedication, after all. Setting it down, they sat down across from her.
A small giggle escaped from Sid as Gaki assured them she wasn’t happy. Her eyes said otherwise. Her face said otherwise. 10/10 I won this round, Gaki-chan…. they archived the thought for later. “Well, when we’re done eating, I have a few new items to add to your inventory.” They smirked a little taking up the syrup container first and pouring it over their pancakes and bacon alike. “Both in game and out of it.”
Eggs... bacon... cheese... waffles... Gaki felt like she'd just completed the main questline to some fantastical RPG and was just now reaping the rewards- the girl was stuffing her face like there way no tommorow, giddy as all hell with the food laid out for her- maybe she'd left her manners back in Kanto but it was fine! The girl was also trying to fight down the feeling of bubbly elatedness from taking over, pac-man knows Sid would never let her live it down- that and... it was just embarrassing! Who gets this happy over a breakfast?! Nuh-uh, not Gaki.
As Sid spoke again Gaki had to force down a bite of her bacon- new... items to add to her inventory?! That was code for presents- her eyes widened slightly... Sid really didn't have to get her stuff, her birthday was like... just kinda another day, where her age goes up! It was like a level up where you didn't get any significant boosts, just kinda... a thing. "Uhm...okay..." How did you respond to that?!
She finished food quick enough, and cradelled her energy drink in her hands as she waited... a little impatiently- for Sid to finish. The food was good, actually, realllly good, not that she'd ever admit it and accidentally give Sid some sort of ego boost- though... they did try really hard and were up of hours unspoken for gamers.
A mumble of, "It was decent, your food skills have improved- but only a little bit!" Left her, once she put the fork down on the plate. Her feet tapped on the floor, and if you were to ask her if she was excited to get her inventory she'd deny it 1000%. She was... a little impatient, as she waited for her cousin to finish, and could only fidget in her seat.
Sid ate a little more gingerly than Gaki did, but they could scarcely hide the pleased expression on their face watching her devour everything. If they had the stamina, they’d cook like that more often, heh. A small chuckle escaped from them as she was stumped by their statements. Of course she was. Of course she was. They went back to eating slower, and she’d finished long before they had. As Gaki spoke, though, Sid almost stopped eating. A wide absolutely toothy grin broke across their features right after. “Is that so?” they asked. “Maybe I’m the one who leveled up then.” They laughed before taking the last bite of their eggs.
Standing up abruptly, they made a hand gesture over to the couch. “I’ll bring your irl inventory items out now, and then you can check your ic ones,” they explained before walking out of the kitchen and disappearing to.. somewhere… perhaps their present hiding spot. Coming back with several boxes in hand, they’d set them on the low coffee table in front of the couch. “Now you must decide which to open first.” And they’d wait. All three of them were squares. Two were significantly smaller than the third. A fourth was… wrapped strangely almost like a sphere, though, and sat dangerously on the table.
Waiting for Sid to finish eating was excruciating, and she sipped on her energy drink so as to not let her stamina stats fall. Maybe it was the built up hype from whatever atmosphere Sid had programmed into their little farm house from the food, and how happy they seemed, but Gaki? She was hyped, incredibly hyped- which isn't usually, especially not in the mornings. So when Sid stood up, Gaki very eagerly followed and sat where she was directed, excited glint in her eyes- though she fought back her hardest on showing a grin- it wasn't good to let down your guard!
The couch, for the most part was comfortable, but Gaki was anxious- what sort of surprised for her inventory could Sid have in store?! Stat replenishers? Water cans? Games? Or... joke gifts... well- whatever. It was Sid, and if she knew Sid then she knew that whatever they'd got was thought out, just like what's done in a strategy game!
"...Uh..." When Sid returned Gaki's gaze locked on what they had- more-so what was being carried, and her eyes widened slightly- four?! Nooo, they didn'thave to go all out? Four was so many- she woulda been fine with just an energy bar to pull another all nighter- though, she was... really happy... The girl drummed her fingers on her thighs, mouth parting slightly in a silent gasp. "Siiid- this isn't like a sketchy puzzle game where they present three options and one option can instantly cut off one of your lifves, right?" That- now what would be a surprise.
Surveying them now, Gaki closed her mouth and scrutinised them all... she was a smart girl, a sensible girl, so surely she'd choose the biggest and most outlandish for la- Her hands instantly grabbed at the weird spherical present, perhaps it was it's strangeness that stood out to her-- but Gaki was never one to hold back on what she assumed to be the biggest surprise!
It's go in full swing or nothing! "I- uh- choose this one!" She said idly as she wrestled with the sphere packaging, sending a glance to Sid for a moment before returning to the task at hand.

Sid snickered at Gaki’s reaction. A wicked grin pulled at the corners of their mouth as they sat down on the coffee table across from he. “No, I promise none of these do damage to your HP stat,” they assured with a small grin. “They will add to your other stats, though.” As she went for the spherical present first, their eyes lit up, and a grin plastered itself across Sid’s face as they waited.
The wrapping was tight, and Gaki would have to pull to unwrap some of it. As it came undone, though, it would become apparent what it was. A little crystal sphere— a snow globe with a tiny base— could be seen. As Gaki pulled more away, though, she would see it was designed a very specific way: the way in which they had both planned out her farm would look… and then next to it the way they had planned for Sid’s to act as an extension. It was detailed incredibly well and had all the colors they had talked down to the letter. “You can turn it on on the bottom,” Sid pointed out making a gesture to the switch. If/when Gaki did, she’d find the little house and other buildings lit up. “Not as powerful as some maps are, but special— limited edition— I’d say.”
The assurance that they wouldn't to damage to her HP stat had her ripping more into the wrapping of the present, almost determined. Especially at the promise that they'd further add to her other stats?! What sort of presents could Sid possibly get her that would raise her stats?! A... a jump rope to... up her fitness? Gaki wasn't good at guessing games, and wanting to figure out she continued at the wrapping with more vigour-
Pulling now, until a small portion was unveiled, and her eyes widened- a snow globe? Ooooooh, she tore into it a little more delicately now, not exactly wanting to break it. Would it have like... a snow miku in it for Christmas winter? A limited edition cutscene from one of her favourite harvest moon games- or- as it was revealled she audibly gasped, staring at the tiny future farm replica with wide eyes. It was... oh she was shook.
She brought it closer to her face now, squinting to look into it better- all the tiny details were perfect?! The tiny creepy area was there, the pretty forested LARP yard with fairy lights was there- the costume shed, Sid's farm, her huge towering farmhouse that looked like an Inn- she couldn't hide the giddiness she felt, a stupid grin now on her features.
As Sid spoke again she very quickly turned it and flicked the switch, watching as some of the tiny houses windows and ect lit up- ohhhhmygod. Her eyes flicked to sid, then back to the globe, then back to Sid. "How... how did you even make this?! Where did you get it- was it a commission?! It even has the costume shed!" She flicked question after question at them, quite visibly in shock.
The way Gaki’s eyes lit up had Sid smirking. They knew she’d love it, and they knew she wouldn’t be able to hide that she loved it! Their smile became a bit more genuine as she looked from the snow globe to them and back again. “Commissioned by Azuha.Arts if you remember them. I commissioned my glass eye in a jar if you remember that,” they grinned. “I figured you needed a sight-scope to remember where everything was. It’s better than any map, I’d say.” They were chuckling now, warm, soft, affectionate. They were so pleased she liked it so much.
Gaki didn't exactly remember Azuha.Arts... but... they did such a great job?? Gaki was like, attempting to stop herself from gaping. It was way better than a map! She had to force herself to put it down, as if remembering she had more gifts, and quietly coughed, as if to stop herself from being a beaming wreck- nope only noobs... beamed... "...We'll have to put it up by the front- like at the entrance- or... or in my room? What would be the better game plan?" after waiting for an answer she took a breath and brought her attention to the rest of the gifts... right...
Gaki brought her attention to the largest square now, humming softly. "Right... new strategy..." And then she was on to unwrap it! Eager, but trying not to seem too eager, aaaaah....
Sid grinned and then looked thoughtful. “I think the front entrance would give other observers the chance to see all of the grounds quickly,” they mused. “It would probably be best to keep it out here.” They nodded sagely thereafter. After that, though, Gaki was back to opening the presents, this one being the largest. Oh Ho-oh, they couldn’t wait for her to see what was in that one.
The wrapping came off easily to reveal a box. The plastic on the box was easy to remove. In the box… was a custom new cosplay dress, one that Gaki had mentioned before in passing and one that Sid had recorded in their mind to recreate: by hand. She would find the stitching patterns to be perfect… and the buttons to a little fancier than the one she had seen before. The material was all together softer and more durable than the one they had seen as well. It would also fit perfectly… because of course Sid had her sizes memorized for cosplay stuffs. Below that was a new pair of boots to go with it.
Front entrance was perfect! Thankfully the wrapping for this present was easy enough to rip off, and the girl took in what was before her with baited breath. Lifting the lid for the boz up Gaki paused, eyes widened ever so slightly before she gently took the costume out of the box. Holy mother of mario- this was... "...Sid you didn't." Gaki said, she'd known them for ages, she could recognize their craft from a mile away. She'd wanted this for ages??? Gaki carefully held it infront of her like it was something fragile, taking in all she could- aAAAA. "Siiiiiiiid!"
Her voice was a disbelieved whine, and she turned around to face them once more, puffed out cheeks, "...this is..." Gaki brought her lips together, unable to find words, and instead huffed. "...You could be a tailor in the last town before end-game missions in an MMO." that was... probably the best they were going to get out of the girl, who was still marveling at the costume before her.
It would be a solid minute before she moved to fold it in her lap, shook- Sid had really, really gone all out- and she didn't wanna think about how much it costed them?? "I'll... try it on later...just to get the full effect- no use rushing into it now!"
“I did….” Sid’s voice came in soft reassurance. A wild smile pulled across their features as she turned to face them. The significance of the compliment was not lost on them then. Their hand reached out and ruffled her hair briefly. “I’m glad you like it.” That meant more than anything to them right then.
Oh damnit they reached for their phone only to find it missing. They’d probably set it down on the kitchen counter while they worked, but there was no use in walking back to get it now. They just watched Gaki’s profile instead memorizing this moment that they’d pierced a hole in their cousin’s armor. Check mate, Gaki-chan….
To Gaki’s credit, she recovered rather quickly, and they nodded sagely at her decisions. Yes that seemed appropriate. “Open the last box….” They encouraged making a small hand gesture to it. It was smaller than the other box but perhaps almost just as long. The wrapping was a little less nice to accommodate a slight incline on one side. As Gaki opened it, she would soon enough know why. Inside was a custom crafted sickle… not a scythe or other weapon but… a sickle to complete her harvest moon dreams. The wood was hand carved with numerous little flower patterns in it. The curved blade was well tempered metal and had her name written in Common on the very end.
Gaki's nose scrunched a little as her hair was ruffled, a slight huff leaving her- noo! Her hair was already messy, that was a deliberate attack! Though as they spoke about being glad that Gaki liked it the girl could only bring her lips together and avert her gaze- her cousin was amazing. In Gaki's eyes they were going to be somebody huge, they were able to do so much and she looked up to them like she would a sibling- Sid was like... the one person she actually cared about- but she'd never say that out loud!
Alright! Next box time! An "Right- Already one step ahead!" Left her as she pulled it towards her, working on pulling apart the unwrap only to reel back as it was unveiled, bright eyes shining- this... oh- oh Sid. IT WAS SO CUTE- and- it's something the protagonist of a modded harvest moon game would own after 5 years in-game time- it looked like it'd be an expensive item.
She gently raised it again, holding it up to the light to marvel at it, "...my farming skill levelled up just from looking at this..." was mumbled- maybe Gaki had little idea on how to actually function a sickle, but, still! It was- aaaaaaah??? "Sid?? It's so cute- how did you... I..."
She trailed off, eyes taking in the tiny details. She chewed on her bottom lip for a moment before shrugging her shoulders, a barely audible, "...thank you..." leaving her. If asked again she'd refuse to say it but... donkey kong holy hell she could never get Sid anything as good as this- and- wasn't there more?! In-game?! And... another box?

The look on Gaki’s face warmed Sid’s smile all the more. She was so cute when she wasn’t tsundere, and they were glad to be able to make her this happy. As Gaki started speaking, Sid chuckled again. “I designed it myself and then had it custom made. You remember Hide-kun? I called him, and he wanted to make it a scythe,” they laughed a little at that. “Convinced him it would be a bit too big for you.” And a sickle was more of a garden tool. A scythe was like… a classic weapon.
“Oh whoops, I forgot,” Sid laughed a little suddenly seeing the fourth box on the table. Perhaps they got a little too excited there. Maybe Gaki was rubbing off on them a little bit. Anyways…. “After this one you can go check your in game inventories….”
The last box was on the small side, but it was wrapped in a sort of gold wrapping that set it slightly apart. As Gaki opened it, she would find a series of smaller items: two new games, a bunch of her favorite candy from Kanto, and… at the very bottom, a tiny, physical photo album. As Gaki opened it, she would find a dozen pictures and selfies Sid had taken with her around the farm when they first got there as well as some later on. There was plenty of space for more of them, however. Below that was a hand-crafted journal with her name etched into it. “Gotta catalogue your farmer days to make sure you hit save right, Gaki-chan…”
Last Edit: Feb 8, 2020 12:00:47 GMT by Sidney Ridley
A scythe?! A scythe?! She wanted a scythe- it would have been massive and she would have struck fear in the hearts of everybody... but she can still do that with a sickle, she'd just have to be a little bit more creative, and... possibly sneaky- there was still strategy able to be used! "A sickle is both a bonus to farming and to attack- strategically, it- it works great..." Good analysis Gaki, now wipe that smile off your face. "...so...many customs..."
Gaki didn't know how exactly to comprehend the extreme happiness she was feeling, mainly because doing so would be embarrassing and something that only noobs do when celebrating small victories- and Gaki was. not. a noob. As she moved onto the last preset she paused- in game inventories... "Is it just the big five MMOs- or are we talking like... a wide-scope?" Eyes flicked to Sid's, uncertain- they wouldn't, would they!? And if they would... why??
Opening the box Gaki very obviously was pleased, at least by the way her eyes lit up and she had to hold back a squeak. Kantonian candy?! Games?! and... an album? She shifted the box to the side as she began going through it, very visibly touched by the gesture- holy bowser. It was like a farm journal- and there were some silly ones, some happy ones- memories- a save file- aAAAH SID. A noise left her and she closed the journal, she was really, really happy.
"Imagine how many more we can put in it when we start the farm LARPs?! Of all the set up- the people?!" Mmmmmph- no she wasn't getting a little teary, that was just the light from it being too early for a gamer to function. Not because Gaki was really, really happy to have somebody?? Go out their way and get all this and appreciate her?! Nuh-uh- not because her cousin was a literal hero who she loved. Nope. She just had hayfever, too. That explains it.
She began collecting the things, attempting to put what wasn't fragile under her arm before standing up, her gaze averted from Sid's. "I-In game inventories! That's the next checkpoint!"
A…giggle escaped from Sid, much to their own surprise. They loved Gaki’s zeal and appreciation for their choices of presents, but of course that was why they were so picky on what to get her in the first place. Everything needed to be perfect for their little cousin. Their features went serious again as she questioned the range. “Big five, the single player three you’ve been working on recently, and the Go project,” they smiled a little wider-toothier. As if perhaps they had eaten a canary.
But the last present was at hand, and they were pleased again by that reaction. All that work… had been for this. And it was perfect. They were so pleased. “It will be perfect,” they answered softly. For the both of us. Away from Mom, in a new land, with new adventures to behold. They could traverse the region, see and eat new things, find love maybe. It was going to be great. But ah yes, the in game inventories. “I’ll leave you to those,” they spoke a little softer. “Some of them I’ve programmed into the overworld, just so you know.” A toothy grin flashed across their features. “But again…. Happy birthday, Gaki-chan.”
