Gabe had heard of the Cycling road east of Ash City, but he had never really seen it until that point. It was… surprisingly high up and well-constructed at least from what he could tell. Even in the winter, it had been cleared off and de-iced with salt and chicken scratch, and he felt safer about riding on it than he expected to. I’ve gotta try it…. At least once, and if he ended up hating it.
Stepping into the gated entrance that served as a way to curate those who didn’t have a bicycle, he rolled his bike in with him. He was met with a warm greeting, reminders about helmets and safety while being on the road, and a myriad of other things that he may or may not have needed. Gabe remained attentive for the most part before thanking them and heading onwards.
Out on the other side of the entrance, Gabe got back on the bike and started up along the road. Hm, a pretty smooth ride, surprisingly.
Gabe peddled along quickly for a while making surprisingly good time as he went. There were a couple of other cyclists out on the road, but they all seemed to be headed in the same direction and unwilling to stop for one another under any circumstances. That was, at least, until the road opened up some, and Gabe caught sight of the sheer number of battles going on. Ah… so it’s not just cycling….
“Hey!” A voice caught into Gabe’s ears and caused him to glance forward again. A girl had stopped her bike and was staring at him.
“Ah, yes?” Gabe smiled a little.
The girl only smirked wildly. “Our eyes met which means we have to battle! Get ready!” she said before immediately releasing a—Oh. Oh damn Gabe don’t snicker. A hand reached up to immediately cover his mouth as he fought to hold it in and failed on the spot. “What are you laughing about!” the girl demanded.
“Just how you think you can win with that little thing….” Gabe grinned as he fished out a Pokeball and released Ignis, his Vulpix. The girl’s eyes grew, but she wasn’t willing to back down just yet.
A Play Rough was ordered, and the Vulbeat went crashing towards the Vulpix. Gabe, however, wasn’t going to stand idle. “Flame Charge,” was the order, and even as the Play Rough had Ignis toppling back for a moment, the burst of flames that released from his body right after spiked upwards and had the Volbeat crying out in pain. The girl immediately squeaked and asked if her Volbeat was alright. The latter was weakened but not downed yet! “Fire Spin,” Gabe went on ordering still more fire after that. Ignis took some nasty blows but dealt more than enough in response.
The Volbeat crashed to the ground for the last time, and the girl was quick to cry and return him. Gabe snorted debating whether he wanted to shake her down for pen but decided to leave it as it was and take the victory for now.
Gabe cycled on for a while thereafter, pretty pleased with himself and Ignis— even if he knowingly abused a Type advantage as badly as he had for his own personal gain. He pedaled along again all the same making good distance for a time at least.
When he came up to the first rest stop, Gabe found a couple of people sitting around, talking, and eating. Not sure how many rest stops there were, in fact, he decided to take advantage of the situation for now. Getting off the bike for the moment, Gabe wandered over to a vending machine and got a drink. Just as he was about to bend down to grab the water bottle, someone tapped fiercely on his shoulder. Gabe straightened and turned around slowly. “Hmmm?” Oh, who was this creepy person staring at him.
“You look familiar,” the woman spoke.
Gabe blinked a couple of times in rapid succession. Why, why did he look familiar? Who was she? Biting the inside of his mouth, he smiled a little. “Sorry? I don’t think we’ve met,” he decided on.
The woman hummed low and thoughtful tilting her head from one way to the next. Gabe waited patiently. “No, I know you, we battled before,” she spoke nodding sagely.
What? What what what? When? Where? Gabe squinted at her and then forced a smile. “Sorry, I don’t seem to remember,” he answered.
“Well I do, and since we happen to be in the same place, we should rematch,” she stated forcefully.
Gabe felt his lips twitch before finally forcing a smile. “Well, if you insist,” he answered. The way she was looking at him… didn’t feel right, but a Pokemon battle was a Pokemon battle. He just had to go along with it. Walking out to a space just big enough and out of the way enough to be useful, Gabe turned and smiled. “Alright then… let’s battle…”
The woman released a Pumpkaboo first, and Gabe felt the corners of his mouth twitch. Well, he knew who was going to have a field day with that one. Releasing Ignis again, he started out once more with a “Fire Spin…” to trap the—
What? The Pumpkaboo seemed to faze into the darkness of its own shadow and just narrowly avoid the move. Speeding around and then up again, it retaliated with a Trick-Or-Treat that had the Vulpix stumbling back startled briefly. Gabe didn’t get a chance to ask why before it became apparent, a Shadow Ball was suddenly super effective, and Ignis was yelping as he was hit and sent crashing sideways. Gabe grimaced. Well then. This wouldn’t be as straightforward and easy as the last. Fine then.
A Flame Charge gave Ignis some much needed speed, and he avoided a Leech Seed because of it. Slamming into the Pumpkaboo thereafter, he manged to knock the ghost over briefly. The Pumpkaboo retaliated with another Shadow Ball, but another Flame Charge increased speed just enough to dodge it as well. Blaring into the ghost again, Ignis managed to faint it before it fainted him.
The hex manic hissed and muttered something as she returned her Pokemon and turned away. “I’ll do better next time, just you watch!” she screeched before walking away.
Gabe watched her go for a moment before slowly looking down at Ignis again. He was looking rough for wear. “Rest for now…”
Rolling onwards down the path again, Gabe passed by a few different people, some of whom wanted to battle but received a refusal, and some he wanted to battle but refused him. Cycling road was… interesting in a way that he hadn’t been expecting. Gabe liked it more than he would admit.
“Hey you!” a squeaky voice challenged.
Gabe to slowed and glanced sideways. Sure enough, a feisty looking youngster was staring at him hard. “Let me guess, you want a battle,” he asked leaning over the handles of his bike. The girl huffed but nodded her head before releasing a Crobat up into the air. The bat cried out, but Gabe just stared for a moment in awe.
Damn if I wasn’t so moral… Somewhere in the back of his mind, Gabe laughed at himself. I would swipe that right from her. But no, this was just a battle. No need to attract that kind of attention on cycling road, right? Right. Fishing out a Pokeball, Gabe released a massive Alakazam right onto the platform. The girl’s eyes grew briefly, but she wasn’t going to back down! “Poison Fang!” she cried, and sure enough the Crobat came flying at them.
Gabe smirked. ’Teleport,’ reverberated form his mind and into Harriet’s. In an instant, the Alakazam was away from the sharp teeth of the Crobat and now behind it. ‘Psybeam,’ was the secondary order, and the bright pink beam came flashing out from the spoons and at the Crobat. The latter went crashing over the side briefly and her trainer shrieked briefly before the bat came flying back up again. Harmed, but not downed.
‘You’re so mean, Gabe….’ Harriet commented softly. ‘A type advantage this great is unhelpful for training purposes…’
‘I disagree… it forces us to keep linked…’
Harriet sighed at that rebuttal. She could establish a telepathic link just fine on her own. A sharp cry suddenly cut through both of their thoughts as Harriet took an unexpected Leech Life. Taking a knee briefly, she winced and looked up at the Crobat who looked ever so slightly victorious now.
‘Can’t afford to have an argument right now…’ They both decided in unison and focused on the battle instead. It was a bit of a struggle, but with a good Teleport here and there to avoid the Leech Life, they managed to down it.
A Poké Ball with 50% chance of capturing a wild Pokémon, with a higher, 80% chance of catching the wild Pokémon if thrown at the very beginning of an encounter.
Rolling along after the third victory in a row, Gabe was feeling pretty good. As he made his way down, however, he would catch sight of something left off to the side. Slowing and coming to a stop in front of it, he bent down to pick up the Pokeball. Hm? Enlarging it and making sure nothing was in it, he grinned a bit at his luck and pocketed it for later. Quick balls were expensive, and he wasn’t about to overlook this.
Gabe would soon enough find another rest spot along the way and only a single trainer sitting there. She was quick to stand on seeing that he wasn’t just going to fly by, and that in itself was enough to raise an eyebrow. “That ready for a battle?” he ask-joked. She hesitated but nodded back. Gabe shrugged his shoulders and fished out a Pokeball. “Let’s go then.”
In a flash, a Liepard was released, and in another flash, a Tsareena was. Well, that was an interesting matchup. Gabe had a trick up his sleeve, though, sure enough. “Swagger,” was the order, and the Tsareena flicked a leaf ‘hair’ back and struck a pose. An irritable sound reverberated from the Liepard as she fell for it and gained strength and also confusion. Her overly confident trainer seemed suddenly less confident and ordered a Hone Claws rather than an attack. Beating the confusion, the Liepard managed to sharpen her attack even further.
Gabe wouldn’t waste the round, though. “Trop Kick,” was the order, and the Tsareena immediately leapt at the Liepard swinging her legs in a sharp kick one way and then the next. The Liepard yelped getting several kicks to the face and shoulders and went staggering back briefly. A low irritable hiss noise escaped from her back. Queen the Tsareena just flicked her hair again and grinned. The Liepad leapt forward but ended up just barely missing the Tsareena and crashing to the side in confusion. Another order for a Sucker Punch was given but the…. Liepard tried it and seemed…. Stuck? Gabe smirked and went forward ordering a Magical Leaf. Sure enough, it hit and did damage. When the Liepard crashed to the ground, the battle was finished.
Or it should have been. The trainer wasn’t done, apparently, releasing an Absol right after. Gabe’s eyes grew and then shrunk again as he registered the relatively rare and powerful beast. He returned Queen for now even at the risk of letting that thing get in a Swords Dance and then released. Gabe grabbed a ball and tossed it upwards releasing a Pidgeot next. A Night Slash came forward, and a Heat Wave wasn’t strong enough to blast it away this time. Several rounds of orders later, and the battered Pidgeot was just barely able to win. Gabe …. Was rather pleased, and he and the trainer talked for a bit thereafter.
At the conclusion of the battle, Gabe went to the vending machine and got another bottle of water— only to stop short as he bent down and found a few spare Pokeballs left. Checking them briefly to make sure nothing was inside, he then pocketed them and got on his bike again. With that, he peddled onwards.
As he went along, Gabe passed a few more bicyclists along the way. One of them, a rather rowdy looking blonde with a harsh look in her eye gave him a moment of pause, however. “Nora?”
She squinted at him and then allowed her eyes to widen in recognition. “Gabe! It’s been forever,” she acknowledged. Gabe smiled a little glad he hadn’t been wrong in that assessment. “What have you been up to?”
They stood around chatting for a while and swapped a couple of stores here and there. It had been all that long, but a few months was significant in more ways than one. After a while, they decided to ride along together for a bit and catch up that way. It was… it was nice.
They went on chatting for a while like that coming close to the end of the trail. Right before they got there, however, Gabe noticed something by the ‘exit’. Pausing to check what it was, he would find that it was yet another empty premier ball. Who was leaving these anyways? Ah well. They were his now. He pocketed it and followed Nora into the bicycle end post and continued on like that into Maple.
