Set in the original region of Arciel, Legends Rising is a route-inspired, but not strictly route-based, Pokemon roleplay. Pick a faction, pick a class, and strike out into the wild to take on the League, master Contest coordination, research the mysteries of Pokemon and Arciel, and much, much more. Will you be a classic trainer? A criminal? A farmer? Choose your destiny on Legends Rising.
After having spent some time in Birch researching where all of Arciel's Gyms were located, as well as what each leader's specialty was, Josh decided Bass City's Water-specialty Gym would be the easiest first target. The second biggest reason he could never qualify for the League back home in Johto was how stacked the Gym Leaders in general were against electric specialists. Of course, no badge would be easy to obtain. His very hometown's Gym was notorious for halting many a Gym Challenge.
With an immediate destination in mind, Josh stocked up on supplies in the morning, making his way to the overlook outside Birch's north gate and took in the view. There was patchy snow covering the fields and major thoroughfare of Route 1, yellow grasses surrounding the dirt road. Looking down the steep slope, it didn't appear too slippery. The only problem was the biting cold. A large system had passed to the north of West Arciel overnight, bringing with it a clear sky and frigid temperatures.
Josh released five of his six Pokémon, the team eager to explore with him. He felt bad for Nitro, the only one kept in a Poké Ball, but it was for the Skiddo's own good - it was far too cold out for a Grass-type to do anything but hibernate and maybe participate in a brief skirmish with a wild Pokémon or trainer. And that was still a maybe. Aslan ran right up to the edge of the overlook, the Litleo letting out a cute but still loud roar as though he were announcing his passage through. Sparks flew from Saber and Blitz as the two tried to run circles around each other. Illumina floated inside a sphere of water just above the surface, not worried about the cold at all; Chinchou often hunted on the sea floor in temperatures and pressures far more harsh than what she was being exposed to.
That left Twilight, an Absol that stood nearly as tall as his trainer. She was emotionless and expressionless as ever as Josh strapped her tack into place, making sure she was comfortable before swinging his leg over her back and mounting up. "Listen up, everyone," he addressed his team as a whole. "I know the Johto Gym Challenge was a big struggle. It always has been. But I'm confident we can handle this one. There's a Gym a couple towns north that is our best bet to get our feet wet in Arciel's Gym Challenge. How about we get ourselves a Badge?!" The fleet-footed electric and fire types all sounded cries of excitement and anticipation. "Great. Twilight and I will lead the way. Let's--" Blitz, Saber, and Aslan raced down the trail to the valley between Birch and Cedar, the Electrike in particular having so much stored energy that he was constantly discharging electricity the entire way down. "I said Twilight will lead the way!" he shouted. "Come on, Twilight, we have to make sure they stay out of trouble!" With that, the trainer and his majestic, white Pokémon chased after the rest of his team.
Why is it always so cold... Wren grumbled under her breath, grateful at least for the jacket they were wearing that was only slightly better at keeping out the cold. The layers they had worn helped moderately, enough that Wren wasn't shivering every five minutes at least. At least Alouette was making the journey to Cedar a little more bearable. If Wren had to walk in the snow, they were pretty sure they'd be cursing up a storm already. Only MJ remained out, Wren didn't trust their other pokemon to stay close but the Ditto was special. Currently in the form of a Growlithe, the Ditto was kept very close to at least give off a little more heat. Wren wasn't about to freeze out here, no matter how cold it was.
Not far up ahead, Wren saw some... idiot by the looks of it... who else would be out here in the dead of winter. And... letting their electric types run wild on top of that. Dear me~... it seems someone's eager to alert the local pokemon nearby. How foolish. Of course, there was no way to get around them... unless they wanted to make Alouette trudge through even deeper snow of course. Sigh... Well... hopefully this meeting wouldn't be so painful. "Alouette, dear~, let's see if we can leave these miscreants in the dust, hmm~?" Wren mused, patting the huge Galarian Ponyta. Alouette whinnied, excited about the challenge before taking off after the small group ahead. If anyone could overtake them, she certainly could!
Josh was thankful the wind was at his back - though he was appropriately dressed for the cold weather, he did not have his racing helmet with him, leaving his face exposed to the cold. He had left his uniform back in Goldenrod, to be shipped to Arciel in the spring, when the racing season was to begin. He tilted his head downward to minimize exposure to the cold, trusting the highly intelligent Absol to stay the course in catching up to his Pokémon. Illumina trailed behind, sliding down the steep hill as the bottom of her water bubble froze upon contact with the ground. She was able to keep up surprisingly well with the running dark-type during the downhill run, the minimal friction propelling her ahead of her trainer at the very end.
Once the three young and excited Pokémon had reached the bottom of the hill, they slid to a stop. Saber and Blitz were huddled around Aslan, presumably for the heat his warm, red and brown fur was radiating. When Josh noticed how quickly he was catching up to the water-type, he recalled her, Twilight gradually slowing down as to avoid kicking up dirt and snow in the smaller Pokémon's faces. The three dove to the west side of the road, nearly jumping into the snow bank. Josh wondered why, his question answered seconds later from the sound of hooves loudly clacking against the road. He and Twilight turned around to find out the two weren't the only Pokémon and rider on the road - an equine, brightly-colored Pokémon he had never seen before was approaching from behind, and fast. Twilight, too, took to the side of the road, yielding to the Trainer that was clearly in a hurry.

Mmm, it seemed the boy had some sense after all, diving onto the side of road as they did. Still, Wren didn't think that they would give up so easily and pulled Alouette to a stop. "Goodness~, it seems these merry band of fools haven't seen a Ponyta before, isn't that right, Alouette~," Wren mused, chuckling softly before patting Alouette. She was such a good girl~.
Of course, it seemed that their little escapade... along with all the shouting alerted a... rather small Bouffalant and... what in Arceus' name was that? Well, whatever the adorable thing was, she was certainly staring straight at Wren and Alouette. Hmmm... Alright then, Night would be a good match for this little one. Tossing Night's pokeball at the cute little octopus thing, the Zorua came out with a happy cry and immediately used Pursuit, not one to let anyone have the upper hand. What a good boy~. A few rounds of back and forth with the... octopus thing and Wren tossed a pokeball at the Clobbopus. The dear would be a wonderful addition to their team~.
The traveler appeared to not be in too much of a hurry, after all. Josh was able to get a good, close look at the Pokémon the dark-dressed girl was astride. Quite a contrast, with all the whites, blues, and purples. "Is that a Rapidash?" he asked. stepping to the Pokémon's other side but making sure to avoid being directly behind the two. "I've never seen one like this before. They're normally supposed to be--"
All of Josh's Pokémon were suddenly on high alert, the sound of heavier footfalls echoing from the direction of their destination, Cedar Town. They were quickly getting louder. Twilight's blade hardened and glowed a dim violet, staring down the charging Pokémon but remaining still otherwise. "Blitz has got this. You don't have to--" The source of the heavy hooves was a Bouffalant that was just barely larger than the Shinx. He couldn't help but laugh. "So it's true about Pokémon here. You'd have to pay a fortune for breeders to get one that small out of a litter. This makes me even more excited!" Blitz shared Josh's excitement, sparks flowing out of the Shinx's tail. He stared the charging Pokémon down, ready to make a counter-charge at the perfect moment. When the Bouffalant came within a couple hundred feet, Josh shouted, "Now!", and his Pokémon flung forward.
The two butt heads, but the small Bouffalant barely even flinched. It was as though the wild had let the electric-type get within point blank range. Instead of meeting it with a headbutt, it jabbed at the Shinx with its right horn. Then left. Right, left, and right with stunning speed. The young elextric-type staggered backward a few steps before falling over. Twilight let out a cry of her own, a telekinetic burst batting the Bouffalant back. While the wild was reeling, she shook her back, a signal for Josh to dismount. She would need to intervene on behalf of Josh's younger Pokémon. Again.
Twilight made a charging attack of her own, brandishing her black claws and slicing them across her foe's head. She occasionally glanced back at Josh, making sure she was in between the Bouffalant and her trainer if possible. The wild was fuming mad. Not bothering with its horns at all, it simply thrust its head toward the Absol's upper front legs, as that was all its short stature allowed it to reach. Twilight retorted with a slicing claws from the other direction, forming a grid of scratches on her foe's head. She followed up with a menacing stare, the wild visibly sweating. Lacking the willpower to continue fighting through the Absol's overwhelming and pressuring aura, it turned tail.
Josh was quick to recall the fallen Shinx and examine Twilight's wounds. They weren't too bad, but she would certainly need patching up. With that difficult battle behind him, the young racer approached the mounted girl. Twilight slowly turned with him, making sure to never let the boy out of her sights. "...May I ask where you met a Rapidash like that? I'm Josh, by the way. Seeing if I can get myself a Badge or two before the racing season begins."

The words that came out of the fool's mouth had Wren blinking slowly. Surely they knew the difference between a Ponyta and a Rapidash? Alouette snorted in amusement, her own way of laughing at the boy's words. "Why, no, sweetie~," Wren mused, their voice holding quite a bit of sugary sweetness, "Alouette is a Galarian Ponyta," they continued and would have certainly gone on about how daft the boy was if their own battle hadn't distracted them. Night was such a good little Zorua to battle as hard as he had and was recalled thereafter to rest for a few. Of course it seemed that the other trainer hadn't fared quite so well and that poor Shinx had to suffer for it.
Of course then it seemed that the battle had gone to the boy's head and he again referred to Alouette as a Rapidash and even gave his name. Hmmm... this Josh either had a one track mind or he hadn't listened to them one bit. Either way, Wren's opinion of him certainly hadn't improved any. "Wren, dear," they mused in response to the boy giving his own name before giving him a much too bright smile, "As I said before, Alouette is a Galarian Ponyta that happens to be quite large for her species. She's a dear that I happened upon while coming to Arciel," they continued, the vague response was certainly meant to frustrate but they saw no need to give out exact details.
"Oh? Badges, hmm~? I wasn't aware that there was a racing season to be had, care to enlighten me~?" Wren hummed, already starting to move on further down the path. Oh? Was that a Buizel nearby? It seemed the dear was quite curious about Alouette as well. A soft whinny was given and it seemed that the Buizel was coming closer. What a good little water puppy~.
Josh stopped in his tracks the moment Wren mentioned Alouette was a Ponyta. "...Galarian?" he asked for confirmation. "...Hard to believe they've spread out from Galar this quickly. This is actually my first time seeing a Galarian one. I mistook your Pokémon for a Rapidash because of its size. I'm sorry." He continued to make small talk with Wren, walking back over to his Absol to make sure she was okay. A couple of red spots on her side, but nothing too terrible. She would need a Potion if her wounds got worse, though.
As the two continued, Josh was now on foot, his Absol on the side opposite Wren. "Taking the Gym Challenges of various regions is something I do in the racing off-season," he explained. "Pokémon races are very popular in Johto and the surrounding regions, and I want to see what kind of scene there is here for it when it gets warmer. Maybe even drum up enough interest to start a league if there isn't one already. Up to thirty of us compete aboard our Pokémon, running challenging, twisting courses to cross the finish line first. It attracts pretty big crowds." He paused for a few seconds. "Think of it like a battle of speed instead of strength."
Saber, still huddled around Aslan, caught sight of a Slowpoke using its tail to fish off the coastline. He stepped away from the fire-type, faced the wild, then turned toward Josh as to ask for a battle. "What is it, Saber?" Josh asked, the young Pokémon's legs discharging small sparks. Saber turned around to face the Slowpoke directly again. "He's busy trying to get a meal. Let's leave him be." With his head down, Saber slowly walked back to the main road, joining Aslan again. As the two moved in front of their trainer, Josh could feel heat radiating from the Litleo's mane. Did that ever feel good.

Wren hummed at the so called excuses Josh gave them as to why he'd called their Alouette a Rapidash not once, but twice. His need for speed clearly didn't just include pokemon with the way he was running his mouth. Still, a shrug was given at the apology and nothing further was said on the matter. Although Alouette did snort, as if mentioning her skepticism to Josh's excuse. Wren had explained not once, but twice after all, it wasn't their fault that he hadn't listened.
As Josh talked about gym challenges and races, Wren feigned interest, not entirely on board with this racing thing. They didn't care for the speed required for what Josh was talking about and might've tuned him out once the Buizel showed up. "Is that so~?" Wren mused, still faking interest in the conversation.
While Josh seemed to be talking his pokemon out of pursuing a Slowpoke, Wren was busy petting the good sea puppy that had approached them. "Would you like to come with me, sweetie~?" They hummed, offering the dear a luxury ball. The Buizel seemed to take an interest in the pretty ball and pressed the button. There's a good dear~.
Josh continued to ramble about some of the races he had performed in last season, particularly the ones he had placed well. It took him a few seconds to stop after a wild Pokémon had grabbed Wren's attention. "...Then again, races aren't for everyone," he mumbled, Twilight and her trainer making their way farther to the road's right side. Aslan and Saber walked behind the two, hesitant to run in front lest they be scolded again for wandering off, they thought. The electric-type lagged behind a bit, one of his legs snagged in a small but tough yellow weed in the middle of the road.
Wait, yellow weed? At this time of year? What weed was crazy enough to grow in this weather? Saber found out the hard way as a Diglett surfaced exactly where the "plant" was; it was actually part of the Pokémon itself! Before he or Josh could react, the swift Ground-type raked at Saber's legs with metallic nails, electricity harmlessly flowing into the attacker. "Metal?" Josh mumbled. "That's it!" he suddenly raised his voice. "Aslan, light 'em up! Saber, I need you out of danger!" He recalled the injured Pokémon, Aslan lowering his head and thrusting his burning head into the Diglett's face. The wild let out a squeal, momentarily dipping back underground to put out the flames igniting its body. Too late - there was already a strong burn near its forehead.
When the Diglett popped back up, it did so accompanied by a minor earthquake Josh could barely feel - if he didn't see a bush swaying for no apparent reason, he probably wouldn't have noticed the rumbling at all. It did cause the smaller Litleo to trip and nearly lose his balance. The cocky fire-type laughed at the Diglett's meager Magnitude attack, his head tuft burning once more. He again shoved it into the wild's face, its forehead burn turning from orange to black. "Don't get cocky, Aslan!" Josh said to try to keep his partner's guard up, the trainer slowly backing away from the battle. He had even backed all the way behind his stoic Absol.
Aslan ended up eating his words. The Diglett ducked beneath the surface, unleashing what could only be described as a localized mega-quake. It completely upended the immediate area of battle, the Diglett getting the last laugh. Josh's Litleo was unable to move at all, the fire-type covered in bruises. Even Twilight and the trainer himself found themselves on the ground from the impact and its rumbling aftershocks. Josh tossed Nitro's Poké Ball to point-blank range. "Vine Whip it, Nitro!" he shouted, keeping his commands short as he made his way to his knees. The Absol had already stood back up, squinting and wincing in pain - that fall had agitated her already wounded body.
Sensing his trainer was in danger, the Skiddo gave his foe a death glare, two long vines unraveling from his collar. Diglett not quick enough to avoid being snared, the grass-type lifted the small Pokémon from the ground and flung it far into the distance. Josh was quick to dig through his bag of supplies for a Potion and get to work spraying the hyperventilating Twilight's wounds.
As distracted as they were over the precious Buizel, Wren wasn't paying attention to Josh's rambling. It was only about races and what he'd done and he was beginning to sound like a broken record. The Buizel did stay in the pokeball and Wren watched in satisfaction as it disappeared and even found an orange apricorn peeking out through the snow. How curious. They didn't think Apricorns grew in the winter. Hmmm, maybe they could give it to a certain neighbor and see what they thought about it. An Apricorn wasn't of any use to them, certainly.
Climbing back onto Alouette's back, Wren urged the Galarian Ponyta forward while it seemed Josh was busy with his pokemon. They had no urge to be regaled with more stories about racing and thus opted to continue on without them. If he wanted to catch up, that was on him. Wren wasn't going to wait around in this bitter cold a moment longer than they absolutely had to.
By the time Josh was finished patching up Twilight's wounds, Wren and her Ponyta were far ahead but still in sight. "Then again, the races aren't for everyone," he said aloud. "Twilight, I can handle it the rest of the way. You deserve a rest after that one." With that, he recalled the Absol and resumed his northward journey on foot.
Around a half-mile later, something slimy slammed into Josh's lower leg from behind, dropping him to one knee. He slowly turned around to see a long-haired, menacing girl dressed in a black uniform with a logo he had never seen before. "Hey! What's the big idea--" As he continued to speak, his voice grew deeper and weaker. What had struck him looked like a Grimer, though most of them were made of purple sludge, not green. This one was so small - no Grimer he knew could Minimize to that size. Losing strength by the moment, he quickly called on Illumina's help, weakly tossing her Poké Ball between himself and the Poison-type.
"Too weak to command your Pokémon?" the female taunted. "Well, that's toooooo baaaaaad." Illumina was on her own. She raised her feelers toward the small Grimer's face and rapidly flickered them on and off while emitting a high-pitched whine, blinding and disorienting both the Pokémon and the thug in command. In its dizziness, it released Poison Gas in completely the wrong direction. It wafted toward the mountains - hopefully no one was in that direction.
By the time the Grimer came to its senses, it had taken many blows, both self-inflicted in confusion and from Illumina's bubbles. It loosed one last thick gas cloud toward Illumina, the water-type and Josh advancing ahead of the cloud. By the time the cloud faded, the two were gone. "You-did-it, Illumina." Josh's speech was slurred, sounding more like a groan." He swapped his victorious Chinchou out for Twilight again.
"I-know-you-need-your--" The Absol needed to hear no more--he sat down and let Josh climb on, the boy slumping forward on the majestic, white Pokémon. The de facto party leader broke into a relatively slow run, focusing more on keeping his balance so the ailing Trainer wouldn't fall. He could have sworn he saw Wren out of the corner of his vision, the white Pokémon slowly gaining on her. "Sorry-for-falling-behind," he called back out to Wren when she was less than a hundred feet ahead, though one word seemed to run into another.

No sooner had Wren started to ride away on Alouette that there appeared to be a Drizzile blocking their path. Oh my, what luck~. She did appear to be much smaller and looked a little afraid too, but hmm... perhaps there was something Wren could do about that. "Alouette, dear~, slow down. It seems there's a friend to be had. Isn't that nice~?" The Ponyta whinnied briefly, drawing the Drizzile's attention to her. It seemed she was just as curious about Wren as they were about her.
Just as Wren was about to approach the Drizzile however, Josh, in all his wisdom said sorry to them for falling behind. Oh isn't this rich. It wasn't like they were traveling together. The Drizzile however hid behind Alouette at the sight of such a fierce looking Absol coming up on them fast. Hmm, Josh didn't look so good actually. But really, what were they supposed to say to that?
"It's fine, dear~. I was just talking to this cute little Drizzile here~. Don't wait up on my account~," Wren stated, their voice sugary sweet to try and mask their annoyance at being interrupted, "Do you want a ride, Drizzile? It would be much warmer if you'd like~." The Drizzile seemed to perk up at that and allowed herself to be picked up, snuggling into Wren thereafter. My, but she was certainly an affectionate little thing, wasn't she~. "We can keep going if you want~, dear" Wren suggested to Josh before telling Alouette to go back into a canter. The Drizzile seemed to really enjoy that and made a few happy sounds, feeling much better now that she was warmer.
As Josh had finished catching up to Wren, he looked over at Alouette and noticed a Drizzile alongside them. There were so many Pokémon he had already met that he had either only read about, or never heard of at all. "Must be another of her Pokémon," he thought, wanting to express it verbally but conserving his energy for more vital communication. Twilight sensed her rider's urgency but kept pace with the large Ponyta, keeping him close to someone she assumed would help him if his condition further deteriorated.
When Wren asked if they could keep going, Josh weakly smiled. "I'd-love-to-get-to-Cedar-as-fast-as-possible," he slowly answered, though even at a slower pace, his words were still blending together. Green sludge was starting to drip from where he was hit, leaving a trail of toxic drops behind them. Slowly losing feeling in his right leg, he adjusted his balance on his Absol again, trying to compensate for only being able to solidly grip his mount with only half his strength. It would likely be a simple treatment once he got to a clinic in Cedar...but he had to make it there first.
{WC: 192} {PC: 7} {Josh: 54/95 | Status: POIS - Wears off in 4 posts}
As the Absol got closer, Wren did note that Josh's condition looked rather bleak, but was focused on the Drizzile for the time being. They wanted this little one to come with them, and worrying them about the fool's condition wouldn't do. Mmm, somehow Wren doubted that they had any kind of move that would help them heal anything. Best not to ask just in case. Josh's comment about wanting to get to Cedar earned a soft hum from Wren. Thank you drunk captain obvious. What had he done, picked a fight with a poison pokemon? Sigh, guess it can't be helped.
"Alouette dear, stop for a second will you~? You too sweet Absol~," Wren hummed. The Galarian Ponyta nickered in confusion and the Drizzile looked a little disappointed that they'd stopped. Aside from that, they had to make a good impression if they wanted the sweet Drizzile to come with them. As soon as the Absol stopped, Wren would motion to the wound given to Josh by whatever pokemon he'd foolishly picked a fight with. Alouette snorted in understanding and pressed her horn to the injury, letting her healing power close the wound if not minimize the effects of the poison.
"There, you should be right as rain, dear~. Do try not to pick fights with pokemon in the future, hmm~?" Wren stated before urging her Ponyta into a canter again. The Drizzile looked to be in awe of what Alouette had just done and started jabbering on about something or another. Oh, this one was just adorable, wasn't she~. Holding out a Net Ball, Wren showed it to the Drizzile who's eyes grew wide in the process, "Would you like to come with me, sweetie~?" they asked, watching as the Drizzile didn't hesitate before pressing the button. What a sweet little one. Hopefully it would like the ball well enough to stay inside.
