Elise’s maker had most certainly not messed up and forgotten that her Gyarados, Shelly, had not actually been surf trained. In fact, this training took place quite a while ago, in fact, around the time that she had first flight trained with Stella the Skarmory. Shelly had evolved from the flip flappy Magikarp she was into a rather fierce creature, but she most certainly was the same flip flappy Magikarp deep down. Even with a temperament shift, she was still easily subjectable to soft tummy scratches and softer words. That was a good thing, in this case, as it made it very easy for Elise to tame her down into being a potentially surfable ally.
With the change in season, the kiddie pool had changed to accommodate as well. The water had been heated to a reasonable degree, and some rules regarding staying warm were loosely ordered. Elise had borrowed a wet suit for this exercise and dawned the familiar life jacket atop it. Even with the change in temperament, she didn’t believe Shelly would shake her off, but this was a requirement for all kinds of surfing training so… ok. Stepping forward, Elise tossed up Shelly’s Pokeball and released the Gyarados into the deeper end of the pool. “You ready to go, Shelly?” she beamed.

Shelly was nervous. She had gone from no thoughts in her head all the time to one thought constantly ping ponging back in her head. Today’s idea was that she was about to make a grave mistake. She was a large Pokemon now, and she could easily make a mistake and break something! She hadn’t done it yet, but she didn’t doubt she could! She had been nervous when Elise had talked about riding her to and from the watery areas around her home, and she had been more nervous when it turned out they need special training first that included being around a bunch of people for a show of it. Still, right then when Elise asked if she was ready or not, she found herself nodding just a little bit. She was.
Elise beamed. “Awesome! Can you lean forward then so I can climb on? I’m thinking right behind that first fin thingy on your back,” she expressed. Shelly hesitated but slowly leaned forward in the water. Stepping off the side— Elise tried to first step on the fish, and then went falling off the other side and into the water. A shriek escaped from Elise, and Shelly immediately swerved around to awkwardly grab the girl in her maw and pull her back up out of the water.

As she was pulled up out of the water and set on the side of the pool again Elise took slow shaky breaths. She was fine. This was fine. She just had to be careful with how slippery Shelly actually was. Papping her face a couple of times, she managed to perk herself up again reasonably well. “Let’s try that again,” she spoke trying very hard to stay positive. Shelly hesitated but nodded. If her trainer was still willing to try then… then maybe they could do this.
Settling back down in the water, she waited for the girl to climb on again. This time, Elise moved with a little more care, slowly shifting her hands onto the fin first and then climbing on. As soon as she was settled on the Gyarados, Elise spoke again. “There! This is great! We’re doing great Shelly!” She spoke as much to herself as she did to Shelly, trying to be reassuring that they could, in fact, do this. “Let’s try swimmingly slowly first!” Slow and steady, Shelly pulled forward, and they moved through the water.
It…. Really wasn’t that bad once you got started! Elise directed Shelly through various parts of the pool, and the large serpent did as was asked weaving in and out with ease. Soon enough, their training time was up! “You did great, Shell!” Elise assured.
