Blink, blink. Blink, blink. Juni stared at Snipe the Kingdra. Snipe the Kingdra stared back at Juni.
This had been a reasonable idea when Juni had impulse-thought it back between Bass City and Ivy Town: catch a Horsea, raise it to Seadra, evolve it to Kingdra, ride, profit. However, now that she saw the body style of Kingdra and just how she was going to have to sit up on practically her “shoulders” to do this, Juni was having second thoughts. For one thing: there were no shoulders. There was neck and then body. No arms to hold onto, no places to put her own hands. She could sit back on the fin a little bit if absolutely needed, but she suspected that would throw them both off balance by quite a lot.
And yet she’d promised herself the minute the air started to warm up, she’d at least attempt surf training. If it didn’t work out, she could figure something else out…. But this was why she had caught Snipe. And sure she could use her for other reasons, but still. Still, she’d made this bed and she was going to lay in it like the fool she was.
So there was Juni in a t-shirt and basket ball shorts looking at the edge of the kiddie pool and wondering what was about to become of her life. Like you do. Shaking her head for the nth time this mental discussion, she smiled at Snipe who had remained quiet during this strange mental debacle. “Let’s do this…” Juni said… for the nth time. Just like riding a Rapidash, right? Right.

Wrong. Juni was wrong.
“Alright Snipe, turn around and kinda… back into the side of the wall, here?” Juni had ask-directed. The Kingdra slowly turned and did just that. And then Juni grabbed her horn-like extensions, and she immediately yelped. Juni yelped and fell flat back on her ass on the pavement. Snipe went sinking down into the water embarrassed.
“Snipe! Snipe the heck??” Juni whined shifting and rubbing her but as she grumbled softly to herself. The Kingdra slowly came out of the water and— immediately blew bubbles in response. “Hey! Hey stop that!” Juni swatted at them as she spoke. “Look chill, ow, how else am I supposed to get on???”
The bubbles stopped, and the Kingdra blushed even further. Juni grumbled softly to herself as she rubbed her hip and then managed to shift around onto her knees. “I just need something to hold onto for a second. I can probably lean over your head after like ride on your shoulders little kid style but I gotta…” she was reiterating something she had already said and not in the best way. Snipe whined back. Juni sighed. “Let’s just… try this again ok?” If it didn’t work, it didn’t work, but damn it she’d made her way all the way out here for this.

It took some coaxing and a lot of silly hijinks, but after that, Juni managed to actually sit on Snipe comfortably, her legs folded around the dragon’s shoulders and her arms kind of resting on top of her head. Snipe, meanwhile, was adjusting to the shift in weight but wasn’t entirely uncomfortable either. They’d get used to this and then go forward. And go forward they would, as the direction to actually try and swim was actually given now.
They bobbled up and down in the brush of swimming motion that Kingdra were known for, And Juni immediately clung down hard. Snipe, for all she was and all she wasn’t, was relaxed enough now not to let it bother her too much, and Juni for all she was and all she wasn’t slowly relaxed again thereafter. They smoothly started around the perimeter of the pool, avoiding the obstacle courses for now at least. After they had made it around, Juni felt just bold enough to direct Snipe around the buoy system. It wasn’t as intense as the obstacle course, but that was the point for them.
Slowly, without Juni realizing it, Snipe had started to pick up speed. They moved more fluidly now around the buoys, and Juni even laughed as they turned and a splash came around. As they moved on to the fake wave area, Juni felt actually ready to do so. Which was great.
