Before coming to Arciel, Kaisei Nebula had no idea how to fish. [break][break] How hard could it be? he reckoned. He had top-of-the-line fishing rod, tackle, and bait; three Lure Balls and a team of fine Pokemon to fight any unruly catches, even with the two eggs taking up space in his backpack; and he could stand in place for hours while a boat sailed around, waiting to see what catch would come his way. Those were all the qualifications he needed. That and a healthy amount of luck. If anyone was qualified to do this, he would certainly be counted among them. [break][break] Kusanagi stood on the railing of the boat, one leg lifted into the air. Kaisei asked if he realized how precarious his position was. The Fomantis flicked an arm in his face to shush him. Or perhaps he was just going through another yoga pose. [break][break] As the boat pulled out past the throng of ships in the harbor, he couldn't help but look for a boat, a certain boat, that wasn't there. Not that he'd have any reason to expect it to be there. He didn't even know what he was expecting to see. His old Feraligatr, waving back at him? He dismissed it as childish fantasy. He had a job to do. [break][break] Setting the first piece of bait on the hook, Kaisei cast the line into the waters of Birch Bay. Flowing like water, Kusanagi shifted into another stance, both trainer and Pokemon waiting with bated breath for the first sign of movement at the end of the line. You feel a tug on the line! Impulsively you start reeling in only for it to pull back? You pull harder! And the line snaps! The boat itself seems to stop right after. The boatman comments that the engine propeller seems to be stuck on something....
A tug on the line! Kaisei instinctively pulled back. Oh, this was a big catch... he tugged with all his might, straining to back away from the edge of the boat while keeping both hands firmly on the rod, until he heard a loud snap and stumbled to keep his footing. The line dangled from the rod, broken clean in two, the hook and bait long lost to the sea. Damn it. At least he knew there was good game in these waters. [break][break] That was, until the boat ground to a halt and he heard the boatman muttering to himself. A few other people -- some fishers, others tourists enjoying the sights -- gathered around in a small crowd. [break][break] Kaisei was not such a simpleton that he failed to put two and two together, and hastily made his way over to the other end of the boat, bodily slinging Kusanagi underneath his arm when the Fomantis refused to move on his own accord. He wasn't a mechanic -- there was certainly nothing he could do to get the boat unstuck now, and it would be best for him to act as if he knew nothing and hope it would all get sorted out later. But that didn't mean he got to take a break. The Golden Magikarp was still out there! He sat down on a bench and set about to repairing his line. It took a few tries, but he eventually got a second hook threaded through and tied off, and was all ready to go with another piece of bait. He cast the line out into the water. Hopefully it would be an actual fish this time. The boat driver keeps telling everyone to stay calm. They can fix this. As Kaisei throws his line over, however, the waters are now kind of still. At least... for a moment. You feel a tug on the line, and you reel in! And find... a pair of swim trunks. O-oh dear. Oh no???
Fortunately the boatman was telling everyone to stay calm, which meant that at the very least he wasn't panicking. The murmuring seemed to die down until only the worst of the worrywarts were heckling the sailors. At that moment Kaisei felt a tug on the line. Was this a fish? Oh no, it was coming up too easily -- instead of a fish, what he reeled in was -- a soggy piece of fabric? [break][break] The swim trunks had definitely seen better days. They were frayed and washed out, but Kaisei could still identify them as being golden in color with thin black stripes. He thought the design wouldn't look half-bad on him, and tucked his rod under his arm to surreptitiously snap a picture. He'd be back in Birch City proper soon enough, and he could try on a pair -- but certainly not this pair, gross and unhygienic as it was. He didn't want to touch it at all. But he knew he'd draw even more questions if he simply left the soggy swim trunks aboard. [break][break] He steeled his resolve and, wadding the trunks up into a ball, he flung them overboard as far as he could, then cast his line over the side of the boat again, but in the opposite direction of the swim trunks. Hopefully the currents in the bay would cooperate with him. You throw out your line, wait a bit, and feel a tug! You tug and tug and sure enough! Your first fish! You see it! Being eaten by a Sharpedo that lunches straight up from the water and bites the fish and your line before diving back down into the water. Sharks. Why it always gotta be sharks.
Whatever elation Kaisei felt seeing a fish emerge from the water was short-lived, as out of nowhere an enormous Sharpedo had leaped from the ocean and snatched away his fish. How dare it?! Of course there was nothing he could do, except perhaps curse his luck. But there was nothing to be gained from that either. If anything it would probably rebound even more bad karma upon himself... [break][break] "SHARK!" someone screamed, jolting him out of his thoughts, that must have lasted only a second or two at most. When Kaisei turned in the direction of the scream he saw a woman passed out on the deck, and only a moment later she was being hovered over by the boatman and two other people, whom he gathered to be the woman's spouses. He didn't need to be part of this scene, and slowly backed away, until he hit the railing and started sliding alongside it. [break][break] "There it is again!" [break][break] Another woman with a pair of binoculars around her neck pointed out toward the bow of the ship, where a distinct triangle-shaped fin was visible, and headed in the direction of the boat. But when it got just outside a body's length of distance, it abruptly veered starboard, the fin tracing a slow circle through the water until it dipped under the waves, only to re-emerge several feet away. It's testing us, Kaisei thought. To gauge the measure of its next prey. [break][break] There was no chance of escape, only rescue, if the boat continued to be stalled. While the rest of the boat seemed to be mesmerized by the movements of the shark, Kaisei hustled away to the stern again. Fortunately one of his Water-type eggs had already hatched - he could feel its squirming motion inside of his backpack - and let it out to reveal a Corphish. "We don't have a lot of time, so listen to me," he said, as he was tying some more line from his fishing rod around the armored plates of his Pokemon's waist. "I need you to fix the boat so we can get away from the Sharpedo that's threatening to eat us all. Give a tug on the line when you're done, or if you get in a tight spot, okay?" The Corphish could only stare and nod. Then Kaisei tossed him overboard, hoping that he could dislodge the offending hook in the propeller... Corpish is young, new, and inexperienced. As it descends into the water and starts over to the engine, it gets confused and turned around-- and then comes face to face with the Sharpedo! It better scramble fast to get out of the way!!!
A Sharpedo. A large Sharpedo. Forgetting all about the boat, the hook, and pretty much everything else, the baby Corphish panicked. It was all he could do to remember to Harden himself as the Sharpedo, Fangs coated with Ice, lunged forward with a massive bite -- and missed! In the spot from which he had scrambled backward only seconds ago was a large block of ice, the water having frozen when the Sharpedo's jaws snapped down, separating the two Pokemon. [break][break] This was it! His chance! [break][break] Scuttling on his little legs as fast as he could, the Corphish went up the side of the block of ice, leapt onto the Sharpedo's head, and kept running. The Sharpedo, angered and confused, shook itself back and forth, but the lack of a tail meant that the Corphish could leap off easily. There was a dark shadow on the surface of the water, he could see. Right, the boat! He could use the boat to get out of the water, where the Sharpedo couldn't follow! [break][break] Kaisei was growing impatient with his Pokemon, whom he had already settled on a name for. He watched the line reel out longer and longer, until he felt a sharp tug and moments later heard the frantic cries of his Corphish as it emerged on the other side of the boat. "Hiruma! What the hell are you--" [break][break] And then he saw the Sharpedo. It lunged forward at the crayfish, but caught its teeth on the side of the boat instead. It bit down with a sickening Crunch. Kaisei heard the squeal of distended metal. Poison dripped from its jaws and onto the deck. [break][break] Shit, Kaisei thought. He assessed the situation. The boat was still disabled, and Kusanagi was making a brave attempt to Hiruma with his body, the Corphish using Harden over and over again in a desperate attempt to feel safe. None of his Pokemon -- not even Saber, and she wasn't even here -- could take on a fully evolved Sharpedo, especially in its native watery habitat. If I still had... He pushed the thought away. The past was past for a reason. [break][break] As if to twist the knife further, the Sharpedo Swaggered, flapping its fins in an intimidating manner and causing Kusanagi to clutch his head in confusion. It was the last straw for Kaisei. [break][break] "Son of a--" He dashed across the deck. "Go the FUCK away!" And he swung his fist at the Sharpedo's nose. You land a solid fist right on its little Sharpie nose. The hit causes the creature to flinch in surprise, and it's enough to knock the creature back a bit. It disappears under the water with a trail of bubbles and when it surfaces again it looks... visibly upset. Not mad or anything, just a little upsetti spaghetti. It fixes you with a look and immediately turns around to being speeding away, jetting away at such force that a little fishie gets knocked onto the boat...
The Sharpedo was gone. [break][break] Kaisei ignored the hubbub and checked on his Pokemon. Hiruma was still huddled up in the fetal position, using Harden, although he had long passed the point when his defense was as high as it was ever going to get. Kusanagi stepped aside to let Kaisei through, and when he realized the state of his Pokemon, he pulled out a Pokeball and recalled the shuddering Corphish. "Thank you, Kusanagi," he said. "You were... honorable." The Fomantis tilted forward in a slight bow before gesturing with a claw to the thing that had splashed onto the deck. [break][break] It was a large ice cube, perhaps as big across as Kaisei's forearm. When he walked over to it, he discovered that a fish had been embedded in it. An Ice Pip? Ironic. "Kusanagi, can you retrieve the fish?" With a bit of work, the plant Pokemon managed to shear the ice cube down the middle, and Kaisei gently cracked it apart to pull out the frozen Ice Pip inside. [break][break] It was at this point that he felt the pain in his fist. Right... He looked down to see the damage that the Sharpedo's Rough Skin had done to his own. His knuckles were red and throbbing, and the skin over them was beginning to itch. Fortunately he had some ice to treat it. He pressed the remains of the ice cube against his hand until he was satisfied that the pain had been numbed. [break][break] Kaisei sent out Tomoko and had her rig up some String Shot to replace his old, severed lines. Perhaps this would be more attractive to fish...
