Set in the original region of Arciel, Legends Rising is a route-inspired, but not strictly route-based, Pokemon roleplay. Pick a faction, pick a class, and strike out into the wild to take on the League, master Contest coordination, research the mysteries of Pokemon and Arciel, and much, much more. Will you be a classic trainer? A criminal? A farmer? Choose your destiny on Legends Rising.
A bright flash lit up the skies of southwest Birch, followed by a loud boom that caused Prance and Shalin to flinch, the Stantler rearing in fright and nearly flinging her Trainer off. Her heart raced for a couple seconds before looking toward the early evening sky - there was not a cloud in sight! Around a minute later, the flash and boom repeated, its source near an abandoned mansion. Curious, the girl and her Pokémon headed through the gate, laughing when they found the "lightning and thunder" to be coming from strobe lights and loudspeakers. There was a sign on the front deck, near the mansion's double doors, that read "Birch's Annual Masquerade Ball and Trick-or-Treat Maze. Enter...If You Dare. Ha Ha Ha!" Pfft. Like that was going to scare her.
While she wasn't exactly a big fan of horror fiction, the idea of a Trick-or-Treat Maze had her morbidly curious. She and Prance followed the signs up some rickety stairs to a hallway that seemed to get narrower and shorter as it approached a single, ornate door. At the start of the hallway was a cardboard cutout of a chainsaw, the bottom of the saw blade exactly six feet above the floor. When Prance tried to pass next to Shalin, her antlers barely nicked the bottom of the structure. As if on cue, the sound of an operating chainsaw filled the hallway, both trainer and Pokémon getting a bit jumpy. The two turned back, Shalin reading the notice to the right of the cardboard chainsaw: "Only you and your soul mate can go beyond this door! Your soul mate cannot be more than this tall, or else..."
A bit dejected, Shalin faced Prance. "You're just too tall, girl. Sorry." At that, the green-clad Trainer withdrew the Normal-type, replacing the Pokémon with a Vulpix. She scanned her surroundings, her fur standing on end in mere seconds. She buried her head in Shalin's chest, shaking. "Come on, Caprice! It'll be fun!" Shalin reassured her partner. She walked back toward the door that served as the maze's entrance, Caprice nearly falling over before reluctantly following the blonde.

Already having had some fun at the masquerade, Greer had decided they wished to check out the maze. Sounded like a load of fun and they couldn't pass up the chance. As they were heading over, they found a girl and her Pokemon. "Well, hey there!" They gave a goofy grin below their Blaziken mask, which only covered the top half of their face.
"Planning on checking out this trick or treat maze, huh? Would you mind going together?" Leaning in, they stage-whispered, "Maura's a bit of a scaredy-Pokemon." The Cubone in question, standing less than two feet behind them, sighed to herself and shook her head. She was dressed "as a ghost" in so much as she had a white sheet draped over here with eye holes. Meanwhile, her trainer was dolled up with dark grey gloves and clothes in beige. A "reverse" Blaziken, if you will.
"Of course I wouldn't mind going together!" Shalin answered a bit more loudly than was appropriate. "Sorry. Caprice here can relate," she dropped her voice to just above a whisper. "Prance wanted to go, but her horns just barely touched the sign outside the door. She's just too tall." Caprice now cowering in the corner opposite where the door was, on the far side of the hall. "Come on, girl!" The Vulpix snorted some very small embers that dissipated in the humid air before standing to Shalin's left.
There was a mote of hesitation as she reached for the doorknob. Her right arm shook as she twisted and pulled, the door loudly and slowly creaking open, mist pouring into the hallway. It was impossible to see what was on the other side from where they stood. "After you?" the girl in green offered. "Oh, I forgot to introduce myself! Shalin Nariya, wildest rider in all of Arciel," she recited, blushing.
You enter a room littered with pumpkins! Small, medium, and large pumpkins cover the floor, without leaving a clear walkway. Several Pumpkaboo watch from the sidelines. Make 3 Dexterity rolls each to see if you can navigate through the pumpkins without tripping on the vines and squishing any. The Pumpkaboo will probably forgive you if you can't make it completely, but still be careful.
Once the mist had cleared, Shalin had found herself in a room full of pumpkins--and Pumpkaboo. Several of them were larger than even she was. Being light and lithe, she suspected she could use some of the larger ones as platforms, albeit slick ones. One false move, though, could be painful--especially if she landed on any of their stems.
Caprice's claws made it very easy for her to cross. Shalin, on the other hand, had no such thing to brace herself against. Studying the room carefully, she mapped out a path to the door on the room's opposite side. She turned back to Greer, describing her plan to cross. "Depending on how nimble you are, you might be able to follow me," she offered, pointing from one large pumpkin to another. "If not...well, you'll need to find your own route." Now all it came down to was executing her plan.
Greer was more than happy to go first and introduced themselves on the way, "Just Greer is good. Wildest rider, huh? That's quite the title." They grinned at Shalin, walking into the maze and entered the room with pumpkins. As the other person explained her plan, Greer looked a little wary.
"I hope you don't break them," they replied. Rather than try to use the pumpkins as platforms, they'd just try to tip-toe through the vines. At least they usually had pretty good balance. They hoped they'd have that now, in particular.
The Pumpkaboo are thrilled you didn't squish any of their friends! They're so happy they give you 5 Rare Candies! Onto the next room!
You have entered the room.
What will you do?
You enter a room that is lit only by a large moon-shaped light in the center of the ceiling, tiny LED stars that cover the rest of the ceiling like a night sky, and one dimly backlit plaque with instructions: "Pick a partner and sing".
A Midday, Midnight, and Dusk form Lycanroc sit around the room, howling at the false moon. Each has a small barrel hanging from their neck. Choose a Lycanroc and make a Performance roll! Players may choose the same or different Lycanroc.

Oh, lovely. She hadn't sung for a crowd since she was in middle school. Worse yet, her musical interests were primarily instrumental. Almost every song she liked playing back at the Thundurus Resort's grand arcade was instrumental - particularly the ones she favored in tournament play. Think, Shalin! There had to be one song out there, even if it was when she was less skilled at the game. Aha! There was that one really popular song among new players - the one about Beautifly and samurai. She would just speed it up a bit.
Now, for which one to sing to? She looked around the room, noticing a night motif, both with the starry sky and the moon-shaped light that dimly illuminated the room. She walked across the room, stood in front of the night-form Lycanroc, and began her performance. She at one point had to stop herself from also tapping the song's rhythm with her feet.

Greer looked around the room, appreciating the decor and the Pokemon before reading the plaque. Singing... Ugh. Sure, they could sing, but were they all that good at it? No. Watching as Shalin made her decision and began to perform, the redhead licked their lips and settled on the Midday Forme.
Sure, the motif was night but even so, they felt a little more comfortable with this one than the orange canine. They probably would have gone with the red one, but they didn't want to invade the space of their maze partner. So they moved themselves near the Midday Lycanroc and began to sing to the best of their ability.
Your howling does not impress, so you receive no rewards, but the Lycanroc allows you to pass at least. Onto the next room!
You have entered the room.
What will you do?
You enter a room that seems to have only a pit between you and the door on the other side. The backlit plaque at the front reads: "Have faith… and careful footing."
If you step out or carefully test it, you will find the entire thing solid, just invisible, against the door side of the pit, but only for a few feet. After that, it changes into a more narrow winding path. Make 3 Dexterity rolls each.
Shalin paced across the door side of the pit, trying to figure out just how the invisible floor worked. She had seen something similar to this at Ecruteak's Gym before. Having watched several of Leader Morty's challenges in person, she had a good idea of the light physics behind his own invisible battlefield. This one, though, somehow accounted for every possible viewing angle from this side. She would probably get her answer when--no, if--she made her way all the way across.
"Caprice, could you shed a little light in here?" Shalin asked. The Vulpix held a sphere of embers in her mouth, which shed a small cone of light. Not enough light to help see the path. "Guess we're doing this the hard way. And the slow way. Greer, try to match my steps as close as possible. And be ready in case I fall." After spending a couple of minutes figuring out where the path narrowed, she searched for each turn the path took, one step at a time.
Aww, the puppies didn't like their performance. Okay, to be fair, Greer didn't even like their performance. Both they and Shalin had been quite pitchy--certainly the redhead more than the blond. Ah, well, at least they weren't kicked out. Moving on to the next room, they found a... pit.
Greer frowned at the pit, but let Shalin do her thing and examine the floor and find out the truth to the best of her ability. "Oh, that's pretty cool, huh? Invisible floor. Glad I'm not absolutely terrified of heights or anything..." That was true, for the most part. Not entirely terrified, but not exactly happy about this trek they were expected to make. Still, they do as instructed and try to carefully follow after Shalin
You manage to make it across the path to the other side of the room, and the door opens! Onto the next room!
You have entered the room.
What will you do?
You enter a room with walls lined with shelves containing all sorts of spooky oddities. To one side is a bubbling cauldron watched over by a Mismagius, and next to it a wrack of ingredients with a sign: "Complete the brew." Use the big wooden spoon to stir in ingredients, making a Cooking roll! All players work on it together.

Just when Shalin thought it couldn't get any worse, she had to assemble a bubbling brew. She was good at scavenging for food and water in the wild; it was never delectable, but edible at the very least. She'd rarely done what most people would call traditional cooking, and now she was expected to help homebrew a soup?
She turned toward the rack of ingredients and drooped further. She had never heard of any of these before; some of them even sounded plain creepy! Even Caprice buried her head the best she could. Her hair stood on end, just as the first time she had walked into Morty's Gym to speak with the man about an urgent matter. "You have an-any idea, Greer?" Shalin stuttered, pointing to several of the ingredients at random, not mixing anything without her partner's approval.
Well that was easy! Greer was proud of themselves for making it across the invisible floor without issue. Upon entering the new room, though, they blinked. Judging from Shalin's expressions, she wasn't too excited either. As the two tried to figure out what the ingredients were and the blond even expressed her uncertainty, Greer tried bartering with the Mismagius, "You don't have a recipe or anything, huh?"
Nope. The Pokemon didn't seem impressed by their question, either, so they sighed and gave a wild shrug. They took a few of the ingredients, added them into the pot in varying amounts, and began to stir it in large circles. What's the worst that could happen?
The Mismagius seems pleased with the brew! She takes a taste, then gathers 4 Rare Candies each from one of her shelves to give you. Your bags have been updated! Onto the next room!
Congratulations! You both make it to the next room!
You have entered the room.
What will you do?
You enter a room more brightly lit than the others. It looks like a child's room, and a soft melody plays. There are 3 creepy dolls sitting on a shelf in the middle of the room, with a box of doll clothes beneath them. The clothing options are: Doctor, Princess, Cowgirl, Ballerina, Unicorn Onesie, Superheroine, Fairy. A sign beneath the dolls reads: "Dress me!" Each doll has a riddle attached.
Doll 1: A maiden fair, with heart so pure. The bravest folk she does allure. With nary a wrinkle and not a pimple, her image is a status symbol.
Doll 2: The purest of hearts and the fairest of looks, you'll find her in meadows or by flowing brooks. Her whimsical charms can charm almost any, though of her kind there are not many.
Doll 3: To care for all of those in need, to do what she must she has agreed. Though it may hurt, it's necessary. Trust her, her smarts are legendary.
Special note: Staff characters must roll a special die and get 30 or higher for their character to figure out the puzzle, since they know the answer.

There appeared to be a lot of toy blocks scattered throughout the room. It was brightly lit, but there was little else comforting about it. It almost pained Shalin to look at the one-eyed dolls staring at her and Greer. Even cyclops dolls would be more comforting to look at--these had one eye gouged out of them. "Caprice, you can put the light out now," Shalin asked her companion, the Vulpix quick to comply.
Each of the dolls had a note under them. She read all three of them carefully, then looked at all of the outfits. Her eyes closed, humming and hawing over what each of the notes could mean. After a few minutes, she turned to face Greer. "From left to right...Unicorn, Fairy, and Doctor?" She didn't sound terribly sure of her guess, but she wanted to make sure the two agreed on a guess before committing.
Greer was happy to have gotten a reward for that last room. Some rare candies. They were tempted to actually try one of them, but refrained as they put them away. Entering the new room, the redhead looked around with a bit of a squint. Oh, hey. This room wasn't so bad. What were they supposed to do here?
As they approached the dolls, Greer's head tilted and they hummed at the riddles. Shalin gave her suggestions and they tapped their chin. "I... I think it's princess, unicorn, and I think you are right on the doctor being third. Don't you watch medieval fantasy movies? Princesses draw the unicorns, which is what that first one is referring to. And most of the fairy tales refer to 'maiden fair' when they're talking out white pasty high class woman. I'm only guessing on the unicorn being second because it says there aren't many, but fairies are usually depicted in swarms of sorts. Like... little lights all over forests." With this explanation, they'd go about dressing the dolls and hoping.
You hear a sound of slightly creepy but happy laughter before the door slides open. Congratulations! Onto the next room!
Congratulations! You both make it to the next room!
You have entered the room.
What will you do?
You enter a room that looks bigger than it should. In front of you is a pit you cannot see the bottom of. Jutting up from the pit are stone pillars arranged in a 4x4 grid, with just enough space between them that it's possible to fall, but even a clumsy person should be able to jump between them with enough ease.
The tops of the pillars seem to have one glowing button each, and are engraved with images. The row of 4 on the far left side of the room depicts witch hats. The mid-left 4 depict moons. The mid-right 4 depict bats. The far right 4 depict pumpkins. At the front of the room is a backlit plaque with four pictures: A leaf, a wolf, an open set of fangs, and a broom, in that order.
Special note: Staff characters must roll a special die and get 30 or higher for their character to figure out the puzzle, since they know the answer. Remove this if no one is staff.
Lovely - a logic puzzle. Where was Aravan when you needed him? He could solve this in about five seconds. With him, when he wasn't doing Surf training with his aquatic Pokémon, he was in his study. You couldn't get him out of there this time of year unless you really thought outside the box. Always musing about the world's natural mysteries, especially those beneath the waves. Come to think of it, he trained nothing but Water Pokémon - of course he would find the harsh Ecruteak winter boring.
Shalin shook her head. He wasn't here. She would need to do this with just Greer's help. She paced the front of the room several times, looking for clues on the walls, the pillars themselves, anywhere. After a couple of minutes, she faced Greer. "I think the witch hats and the broom are related, the moon and wolf are related, the bat and fangs are related, and the pumpkin and leaf are related." She paused for a few seconds, her arm twitching on occasion. "The mural back here depicts, from left to right, the leaf, wolf, fangs, and broom, but I'm not sure how the buttons themselves work. There are a few things I could see - the most likely is activating the pillars in pumpkin, moon, bat, hat order. But it could also want us to activate...maybe one pumpkin, two moons, three bats, four hats? There are a few different ways I could see it working. That help?" She didn't look too confident.
