As they continued forwards, Addys pokemon made sure to stay in line- and on the lookout this time! Forwards forwards- she just hoped she didn't get lost, this was supposedly a long route, and even if she had her trusty pokemon with her there was always that terrifying chance that everything could go downhill very quickly. She didn't wish for that at all! Her hands moved to wrap around her as she walked, barely comprehending what Shalin was saying... weeping,.. forest? "M-Maybe... it's like a rainforest- o-or... uhm... the...leaves droop?" No- Adelaide that was a stupid idea! Quickly backtracking she mumbled up a "N-N-Nevermind, sorry..."
Bayleef let out a whine, and Adelaide moved to see what the fuss was about- the huge pokemon had almost stood on a Shroomish wondering by! Oh, oh no! The Shroomish looked terrified, and Addy could only whimper as it ran off, rather than squaring up- okay, that... that was one less thing that she had to worry about- at least it wasn't crying! But... but what if it was?
She moved to get ready to continued forwards, only then noticing that Shalin had got drwn into another battle by a passing stranger, and was losing. "A-Ah no..." Adelaide could barely comprehend what she was seeing until another one of Shalin's mons fainted. Adelaide quickly moved towards the girl, albeit hesitantly. "If..If I had a revive i'd give you one- u-uhm... lets... lets hurry to the end of the route so we can g-get your mon to a pokecentre- if... if t-that's what you want?"
Nonresponsive to Adelaide's comment about their destination, Shalin was absorbed in Captice's condition, letting Prance navigate the foothills for her. It looked like she was going to make it, provided the next time she was released from her Ball was at the Pokémon Center. Suddenly, she felt a moderate kick from Prance, nearly dropping Caprice's Poké Ball in the process. "Hey, what's the big idea?" She then noticed a Great Ball clacking up the hill before coming to a rest on a piece of flat ground. It came to rest on the activation button, opening to reveal it was empty. Not a bad find at all! Her delay in picking up the lost item let Adelaide catch up.
"The trainers of Arciel are...much more talented than Johto's," Shalin explained. "Caprice will be alright as long as the next place I let her out is the Pokémon Center. Thanks for the offer, though - it means a lot." The tree line to the east was getting close. "The forest is just over these hills. From what I've seen of this side of Arciel, this is the best way to cross the mountains. We're almost there." She held Caprice's Poké Ball close to her face one more time before reattaching it. "Hang in there..."
Adelaide sighed as Shalin said she wouldn't need help and that her mon was strong, right. "O-Okay... No... no w-worries..." Addy still wished she was able to help, in any small way- at least now that she offered she wouldn't be seen as hated, right? Shalin would see her perceived sincerity and if she screwed about again think back to how Adelaide said she's gift a revive if she could and decide against going to the reporters- maybe?! Adelaide could only hope- but...
"Y-You're... also from out of A-Arciel?" her voice was soft, questioning, "I-I'm... erm... i-i'm from Sinnoh- so... u-uhm..." No! Adelaide! Your attempt at relating will backfire! If anybody searches up Adelaide, Sinnoh, they'll get the news reports, the articles, and then your life in Arciel will be over before it's even begun!
She wanted to say more, but was distracted as Dustox flew down and attempted to attack Primrose- said mon letting out a loud cry and pacing back a few steps towards Adelaide, eye's wide. O-Oh- oh no! "H-Hey, it's okay Dustox- we're not g-going...to hurt-" The Dustox however managed to cut her off by flapping their wings and directing a large gust towards Clauncher, who'd step forward in an attempt to defend the large green pokemon.
Adelaide's eyes were wide and the girl began shaking- what did she... how... what did she do?! Uh... uhm... "N-Nymph, swords dance-it'll... make you strong, I..I think..." She didn't say much else as Clauncher raised her shield upwards and snapped her pinchers together, swords briefly appearing over her head for a moment before she jumped into place, staring threateningly at the fairly angry Dustox.
Adelaide's other pokemon moved away to give the two fighting pokemon space as Adelaide's arms instincively hugged around her body- what if Shalin saw her battle as awful- what if she was doing everything wrong?! What... she had researched Claunchers moves, especially after her time in the training grounds and with Riley- she could only hope it worked in her favour.
The Dustox let out a loud cry and flapped its wings furiously, a sharp, white gust (Silver Wind) flying directly into Clauncher, who's pained cry caused Adelaide to stiffle a sob- she hated this- she hated this! What was Claunchers strongest move again?! "C-Crabhammer!"

Clauncher pushed herself forward, recovering from the attack quickly and slamming her front claw right into the Dustox, batting it out of the air with a shriek. Adelaide was expecting it to not come back, however the sound of it's incoming wings told her otherwise and she quickly braced herself for another attack coming Claunchers way- if the Dustox hurt her again she wouldn't know what to do with herself. A Venoshock was thrown Claunchers way, and another cry left her lips, eyes fluttering closed for a few moments, but she wasn't done yet, especially not when the Dustox looked so weak. "Nymph- finish it- w-with... a bubble beam!"
Nymph closed her eyes, before focusing directly at the Dustox, who beat its wings weakly, looking like it was going to fall out of the sky any moment- but there was no mercy. The Dustox had tried to hurt Adelaide's pokemon- Clauncher opened her claw and a big burst of water was shot out at the Dustox, followed by a loud pokemon cry before it fell to the floor directly infront of the trainers. Right... right... Adelaide was shaking, and gulped down the tremors that racked her body. This was fine- this was okay.
A few steps forward, the girl moved the scoop the Dustox's fainted body into her hands, and moved them over to a safe place by the bushes before moving back to gently pat her Claunhcer, checking her over to make sure she's alright. After a few beats she turned back to Shalin, "S-Sorry...You...You didn't h-have to see that- I..." she said nothing else, only turning back to Clauncher and smiling softly as the pokemon gently grasped onto her hand with her claw.

Shalin had already lost two of her Pokémon to battles she had voluntarily entered into today. Snorlax were known for causing roadblocks, and strong trainers often needed to be called in from afar due to the species' sheer power when aroused. Thankfully, this one had tucked itself in a rock formation a few hundred feet to the side of the road, where she did not need to engage it. The forest would presumably be full of danger - she did not need to go looking for it here.
Shalin pointed out the sleeping wild quite a distance away. "If you want a Snorlax, it's all yours," she offered to Adelaide. "We still have a forest to get through after this, and we may not be able to flee battle as easily there." She faced directly east, to where the forest itself was - not too far now. She could also hear Prance's breathing becoming heavier. "We can pitch camp outside the woods if we have to...and I think Prance really needs it."
Adelaide stayed where she was, silently shaking while trying to ensure that Nymph was okay, the Claunchers claw clinging gently to her as if to reassure her that her fears were silly and that she'd be okay. Adelaide didn't wanna battle anymore, she just wanted to get through this route and sleep- for as long as possible. Was that bad- would that get her judged? Adelaide didn't care at this point- she... she was emotionally drained already.
Her head turned to Shalin as she spoke, not quite registered the words and mumbling a weak, "No thanks..." At the offer of a Snorlax. No- she didn't need that. The SNorlax would just hurt her pokemon- she didn't want them to hurt, she wanted them to be okay- they'd hate her forever otherwise! "W-We... can camp soon- or... or we could push through and... a-and get... to the pokecentre..." As she moved to get up she felt a bump at the back of her leg, and her eyes turned to a small pink pokemon who'd accidentally stumbled into her-
Adelaide was scared, Adelaide didn't want to deal with a battle- she didn't want to say the wrong thing- she- she..Addy grabbed out quick ball out of reflex, tapping it on the pink blobs head without a second though. "...P-Please... please... p-please..."
Shalin breathed a big sigh of relief when she heard Adelaide was in agreement that they needed to beat feet. Thankfully the forest was not too far, and from there they could decide whether to just take a rest, or head all the way back to the Pokémon Center first and retrace their steps another day. "I know in Johto we had some particularly rugged areas where roadside Pokémon Centers far from civilization opened up. If there's even a makeshift one at the entrance to the woods, I think we can press on." She squinted toward the forest that split the mountains in two but could not see any buildings. Perhaps they were obscured by the hills.
The sun had also created quite some time ago. There was not a cloud in the sky, but the wind was picking up a bit. Whether they were camping outside the woods or retreating to town, they had to decide soon or risk traveling by night for the end of the trip. Traveling by night in an environment where they wouldn't be able to see the moon was just asking for trouble. "I want to hear yout thoughts," Shalin addressed Adelaide. "Would you want to turn around and regroup, or camp outside the forest and press on tomorrow?"
Oh thank everything, Adelaide clutched the successful ball to her chest, trying to ignore how much her hands shook, how her breathing was uneven. She didn't want to battle anymore- she needed to train more but she couldn't bare hearing the cries of her pokemon that she'd come to care for. She just wanted them to have fun doing pokemon contests- was that so hard to as for? Was that so much? "I...I h-hope there's a pokecentre..." She managed out, though her voice was terrified, an echo of her real thoughts.
As Shalin addressed her the girl could only gulp, ignoring the concerned looks of her pokemon, the way Bayleef attempted to rub her head into Addy's side to keep her calm. Adelaide.... Adelaide didn't know what to do. She'd be seen as a chicken, as a failure if she refused to go further- Shalin knew who she was now- Shalin knew her name- Shalin could go forth and tell somebody what she was like... Adelaide didn't know- she wanted her pokemon to be okay, to be safe... she...
"...I...I d-don't know- you... I.... What do... what do you... want to do?"

Adelaide's question was answered when the end of the hilly trail came into sight, disappearing into the woods. It did not look like a Pokémon Center was stationed outside the woods. Shalin mumbled incoherently for a bit before speaking up, "The regional government probably didn't think the woods were enough of a hazard that a Pokémon Center would be needed out here. They're most common outside mountain tunnels, but they're not unheard of elsewhere. Back in my trip across Ageos, there was one stationed outside of a rainforest that was the only way to get to a country town." She continued making anecdotes about that region before they had made it to the mountain cliffs splitting Arciel in two.
With how late in the afternoon it was, seeing anything beyond the tree line was nearly impossible. Even if it was a little earlier in the day, it sounded like she really wanted to rest her Pokémon. And herself. Going into the woods at night, unless you were specifically hunting a nocturnal Pokémon there, was asking for trouble.
At first, Shalin had blown Adelaide's complaints off as whining from having rarely or never traveled by foot, which made sense for that field of work. The closer they got to the forest's entrance, the more frequent it became. This time, though, it sounded less of a complaint and more...fear. It would also be a good excuse for her to return to the city and restock on supplies before making the final push. "I tell you what," Shalin answered after a lengthy pause. "I'm going to pitch my tent for us. Caprice and Flit both need medical attention still. How about I check on them and we decide in the morning? If you want to go back, I'll go."

Adelaide was fidgeting. Of course- of course there’d be more pokemon centers out here- she did have potions but… she really didn’t want to see her precious pokemon hurt. Every hit against them was a mental strike against her, and the more she witnessed the more she wanted to run. She adored her pokemon too much- she was a coordinator, not… not build for watching all this!
As Shalin spoke of pitching a tent Adelaide nodded, she… she didn’t want to be a burden but she didn’t think she could make it any further without having some sort of breakdown. A hand was pushed through her hair- she was… sharing a tent? “I..I can… j-just sleep outside…” her words were quiet, and she moved to gently pat Primrose’s side. “S-She’s really warm…”
While Shalin was just finishing setting her tent up, another wandering Trainer approached, her Flareon's sheen shining in the setting sun. The Pokémon approached Shalin close enough that she could feel heat radiating from it. She turned her head to glimpse the two. "Be with you in a few," she quipped before going back to securing her tent's stakes in, heading inside on occasion to make sure her central support wasn't going anywhere. Once Shalin had finished, she addressed the stranger. "A battle? As much as I would like to, it's a bit late. If you can wait until the morning, I wouldn't mind then. Plus, I need to make sure two of my Pokémon are okay - they took some hard hits earlier today."
Shalin had also caught sight of Adelaide and her Bayleef close to one another. "You sure?" she asked after hearing the girl's pretense to sleep under the stars. "It's going to get really cold this time of night. It'll be warmer inside than out." A long yawn came out of her mouth. "If you ever get too cold, you're welcome to come on in and make yourself comfortable on the other side. Just don't step on me!" With her camp all set up and the sun on the horizon, she was about to pass inside her tent when she turned around and faced her traveling partner one more time. "I'm turning in. Night!" With that, she placed the belt containing her team's six Poké Balls on the floor next to where her sleeping bag was set up and began to nod off for the night. She hoped Caprice and Flit would be in good enough condition in the morning to at least administer some medicine.
Adelaide nodded her head at Shalin- she really wouldn't want to be a bother- as much as outside terrified her she'd know she'd be safe and looked after by her mons- and this was she'd be sure that nothing bad happened. Nobody could take a picture of her asleep and use it for blackmail like this, after all! "Y-Yeah... yeah i'll be fine- g-goodnight..." She gave the girl a tight lipped smile, watching her dissapear into the tent.
Right.. okay... A few of her mons seemed hesitant to let her sleep outside, but Adelaide was certain this was okay. She moved to gently direct her pokemon on where to sleep- a day of morning soreness is nothing compared to the insurance that nothing bad would happen to her- so what if she got sick?! Primrose mad herself comfortable by the tent and Addy moved to curl up next to her, a few of her other pokemon moving and nestling around her, both to keep themselves warm and her warm.
From nearby one of the pokemon had seemed to notice the strange group of pokemon and trainer and had approached, it was a Lucario! A small whine from him caused Adelaide to shoot up, suddenly concerned she'd hurt one of her pokemon- only to see the Lucario staring at her weirdly...
Oh... He- he was actually kinda cute. The girl, hesitant, moved to the side slightly. "F-Feel free to come over, buddy- i-it's warm over here, i'm... just trying to sleep. I didn't mean to... to d-disturb you.." she paused, and then moved to grab a ball out of her pocket, gently nudging it towards him. "...Want this?"
The Lucario didn't want the pokeball, he didn't really seem able to trust her either. Adelaide bit her lip, still rather sleepy but... The Lucario wasn't moving, he seemed interested at the very least in what she had been saying, so she could work off that. "S-Sorry, I just assumed you'd wanna join..." She shifted again, Primrose staring at the Lucario from over Adelaide's shoulder curiously. "I...I w-was offering it because you look really s-strong, and you don't have anybody around you so... s-so I thought you were a little lonely..."
Her hands moved to work themselves nervously through her hair as she spoke, once more offering the ball to the Lucario. "I...I-I'm going into c-coordinating, and... a-and it's not a lonely profession- I promise- m-me and my mons... a-as you can see are like family..." She moved closer, leaning so the ball was in better view, "...so, w-what do you say?"
The bright morning sun seemed to pierce through the fabric of Shalin's tent, seemingly burning her eyes as she let out a big yawn followed by a loud grunt as she stretched. Having the tent to herself, it was easy to spread her belongings out, get changed, and so forth. It did not take her long to don her signature green outfit.
Once she had gobbled down a handful of trail mix and topped off her supply of water, filtering it from nearby stream water, she peered into the Poké Balls containing her injured Vulpix and Yanma. They looked a bit better, but she'd rather walk into a Beedrill hive than risk battle with them now. If she came across some raw materials to create potent medicine from, she could get them battle ready. On every journey, one always forgets something. She felt horrible that of all things she had forgotten, revival medicine was ahother.
Shalin pulled out her sketched map of Arciel and shouted toward Adelaide, trying to get her attention before walking toward the girl. "I've come to a decision." Big inhale, big exhale. "From here, it would be much faster to go straight through the woods to the next town than it would be to return to Birch. As worried as I am about traveling while being down Flit and Caprice, I'm going to press on. For their sake."
She reached for Prance's Poké Ball and lobbed it skyward behind her, the tall Normal-type's hooves clacking against the road almost immediately. Shalin continued, "If you want to keep going with me, you're welcome to. Otherwise, it's been great traveling. Back in my Hoenn journeys I watched a couple of Contests. They were fun to watch, but I don't think I'd want to enter one myself. I'll check for your name in upcoming Contests when I'm traveling. If I see your name, I'll come watch you."
After the Lucario left, Adelaide had curled herself against the Bayleef and fallen into a cold, restless sleep. Because she had no fire types, there really wasn't much in the way of warmth for the finicky coordinator. But it was okay! Addy was fine, really- except for the shivers that took over her body, and the pink nose that hinted at an oncoming cold- but everything was fine. She had still been asleep when Shalin left the tent, and let out a startled bumble of non-common words, baefore throwing herself right up in a sitting position. "U-U-Uhm-"
She words to blink sleep from her eyes, the mons around her slowly coming to a rise too, nudging each other and opening their mouths in yawns. Shalin was talking- she was being shown... a map? Her eyebrows furrowed and unfurrowed, and she squinted to focus on what she was seeing....
Through... a forest? Right now Adelaide didn't know if she'd be able to survive a forest- it'd already chaken her seeing her mon get beat up, even if they had won it really did a number on Adelaide's spirit. A very soft, confused yawn left Adelaide's lips as she gently used Primrose to anchor her, help her stand up. "I...I t-think..." She began, pushing some hair out of her face and trying to ignore how she had to have looked like actual hell, bedhair, smudged makeup, "I'll.. g-go back to birch... i.... t-that might be best..." she needed more training, and she needed to save face- this girl had already seen her cry like... twice- seeing more could result in a storm Adelaide didn't want to think about. "B-But... thank you- my first contest c-could be soon- I...Y-You'll see my name- if...i-if i'm in one..."
It took a few more breaths before all her other pokemon had woken up properly, and found themselves back around Adelaide, the girl now fussing over a mini-mirror as she spoke, "...I-I'll be seeing you- t-then... Shalin?" Her eyes flicked back to the girl, a final goodbye before they parted.
