Today was the day Fayne and Molokai would strike out on their own and officially start their Pokemon adventure together! It had been some weeks since she first arrived in the region and even less time since she'd been paired up with her starter. But with Molokai trained up to level 10, various potions and Pokeballs in her backpack, and some camping equipment in tow, she was ready to finally get things underway! Granted, the humid, hot, and muddy weather wasn't ideal, it was the first day in the last week where it wasn't actively storming. Fayne even made sure to check the weather on Route 6 before leaving Birch City. Apparently it was supposed to be cloudy and drizzling for the next few days, but it wouldn't be stormy again until well after she reached Pine Town.
Fayne woke at the break of dawn and left a letter on the fridge to remind her roommate that she would be gone for a few weeks. At the bottom of the message, she informed Sonia that she would text or call if her plans changed. With everything set, she left her home and stepped outside the city limits. The moment she spotted the "Now leaving Birch City" sign, Fayne inhaled deeply and admired the rolling grass fields before her. It was almost enough to make her cry out of joy. Almost. With an exhale and a determined nod, the young researcher grabbed the straps of her bag and began heading south. It only took her about five minutes before she spotted something a short distance away.

It was a Natu, perched on a branch and cautiously watching Fayne as she approached. While she didn't want to be one of those trainers who caught every single Pokemon they came across, she did only have one and having a second would prove useful in the long run. Better to get a full party sooner rather than later, right? And although this wasn't the first wild Pokemon she'd come across in the region, it was the first she'd seen since she decided to hit the road. Capturing it would serve as something a memento -- proof of progress. Fayne slowed to a stop by the side of the road and stared up at the Natu, silent for a long moment as they studied each other. Although she did feel a little guilty about trying to capture such a gentle creature, her determination prevented her from walking away.
Without a word, Fayne grabbed Molokai's Pokeball and threw it into the air. The Natu reacted by shaking off the dew that had collected on its wings and took to the air. In a bright light, a tiny Charmander emerged from his ball and instantly grumbled in discomfort. The humid atmosphere and the mud under his claws were far from pleasant, but the sound of Fayne's stern voice brought him to his senses. "Let's go, bud! Growl!" Molokai looked up and spotted the Natu, bobbing left and right in the air as though it was floating along an invisible ocean. The moment he spotted his target, Molokai curled back his lips, revealed his teeth, and snarled in an adorable way.
The Natu only blinked in response. To Fayne, it seemed like the wild Pokemon was in no mood to fight but was ready to defend itself if need be. This was a curious response and it forced Fayne to pause and reconsider her approach. "Hold up, Molokai," she said, her gaze still locked on the wild Pokemon. After reevaluating the situation, Fayne chose to try befriending the Natu instead of fighting it. "Hey, I'm sorry about that. I'm still new to this whole trainer thing. I'd really like it if you joined my team. You're a beautiful Pokemon, and if you come with us then I'll make sure you have plenty of food and shelter." Fayne glanced up at the overcast sky before returning her gaze to the Natu who remained suspended in mid-air. "It'd be better than having to constantly find shelter from the rain." Molokai scampered up his trainer's back and perched on her head before giving a squeak of reassurance to the Psychic type.
With a uneasy sigh, Fayne tossed a Pokeball at the Natu.

The Pokeball only shook once before illuminating and dinging to signify a successful capture. Either the Natu wasn't very strong or chose to go willingly. Fayne liked to think it was the latter and that her silver tongue had convinced Natu to come along. With a smile, Fayne leaned down, picked up the Pokeball, and stroked her thumb across the red cap, silently sending her love to the creature inside. "You stay nice and dry in there," she said before attaching it to her belt. Molokai snarled and Fayne turned to face him. Now that the conflict was over, he looked miserable and glum. When their eyes met, he growled and huffed. Though the young researcher couldn't be certain, she had a good idea what he wanted. He wanted to go back in his ball to get out of this humidity too. Fayne abided and recalled Molokai. There was nothing left to do but keep on down the road, and so she did.

As the journey commenced and Fayne trudged on, admiring all the sights and sounds nature had to offer, boredom eventually won out over fascination. She pulled out her headphones, slipped them over her ears, and turned on the latest episode of her favorite podcast. The solemn, British-accented host began speaking, his voice was deep and droning but pleasant to listen to all the same. He would crack jokes without changing his tone, which added to the comedic effect. It was as if he completely missed the fact that what he said was funny. Listeners knew what was actually meant to be perceived as a joke because his co-host, a Rotom, would buzz with a quip or a punchline to go along with what his trainer had said. They discussed everything from pop culture to major scientific breakthroughs, but they very rarely touched on politics. Occasionally, Fayne would smirk in response to something that was said in the podcast, but the smiles never lasted very long.
All the while, she continued to look around the route with a sense of awe and inspiration. The dirt road, the green trees, the birds and Flying Pokemon that fluttered across the bright blue skies without a worry... it was all so beautiful. Back in Alfrim, it was all pavement and concrete, machines and telephone poles, and of course, Electric and Steel Pokemon. Fayne gently caressed the two Pokeballs on her belt, grateful for the Charmander and Natu that now made up her party. They weren't exactly Eevees, Growlithes, or Axews, but she loved her Pokemon all the same. Just as Fayne finished stroking the Pokeballs, something caught her attention. She narrowly missed it, but she definitely saw the flick of a black tail disappearing behind a large rock. Though she did not speed up or slow down, she did peer around the boulder as she passed by. Upon doing so, she spotted a Salandit headbutting, scratching, and gnawing on an egg that was about the size of its entire body.
"Hey, stop that!" Fayne blurted. Before she could even take it back or reconsider intervening in the circle of life, the Salandit turned to face her. A wide, toothy grin spread out across its muzzle and would've looked truly intimidating if it weren't for the long, serpentine tongue that lolled out the side of its mouth. Fayne grew tense the moment their eyes locked, and she reflectively grabbed Molokai's Pokeball. When she it, the Salandit warbled and cocked its head to one side, curious as to what the young researcher had in her hand. Fayne's gaze shifted from the Salandit's face to the egg it had been trying to eat then back again. He was hungry. With this realization, she let go of Molokai's Pokeball and slowly slid off her backpack, careful to keep one eye on the wild Pokemon in case it became aggressive.
The moment she placed the bag on the ground and began to unzip it, the Salandit scurried over and peered inside. Fayne eyed him warily and pulled out a cucumber sandwich. She hadn't planned on giving it away -- she'd only pulled it out to reach the Pokemon treats underneath -- but the Salandit had a completely different understanding of things. The moment Fayne pulled the sandwich from her backpack, the lizard snatched it from her hands and began to consume it, zip-lock bag and all. "Hey!" the petrologist shouted, mostly out of alarm. The Salandit swallowed hard and stared at Fayne, seemingly unaware of what it had done wrong. "I get that you're hungry, but that wasn't for you," the young trainer scolded. The Salandit continued to stare, its tongue still half out of its mouth and its eyes glistening with the hope of receiving more food.
Fayne sighed with irritation and grabbed the bag of Pokemon treats. The Salandit lunged for it the same way it had with the sandwich, but Fayne was ready this time. She recoiled and swatted at the wild Pokemon with her free hand. The lizard backed off and, believing it had gotten everything it could out of Fayne, turned its attention back to the egg. With that, the Salandit gave the egg a hard shove against the side of a nearby rock, causing it to crack like broken glass. Fayne let out a gasp and jumped to her feet. "No, stop!" she screamed, shoving the Salandit aside and scooping the egg up in her arms. The wild Pokemon made a noise that reminded Fayne of hyenas laughing, and returned to the backpack she'd accidentally left wide open a short distance away.
Before she could say or do anything to dissuade the Salandit from scrounging through her stuff, there was a flash of light followed by a victorious ding. Fayne froze and let her mouth fall open out of pure surprise at the fact that she now owned a Salandit, simply because it had caught itself in one of her Pokeballs. "Just my luck," she muttered while turning her attention back to the egg in her hands. It was then that she noticed how bad the cracks were. Some of the shell had flaked off, exposing some of the albumen. Fayne felt her heart begin to race, and she hurriedly pulled out her phone to text Sonia, her roommate who also happened to be a Pokemon Nurse. If anyone knew what to do, it'd be her.

Fortunately for Fayne and the egg in question, Sonia knew exactly what to do. Pick out the egg shells, drench a cloth in potion, stick it in the hole, and wrap it to ensure the cloth stayed in place. The young researcher stuffed the phone into her pocket and scrambled over to her backpack where she retrieved a potion and first aid kit. In a rapid flurry of movement, Fayne picked out the broken shards with tweezers, sprayed a square of padding until it dripped with medicine, and placed it over the small hole with an ace bandage. By the end of the procedure, the entire grey and black egg was entirely covered with wrapping and medical tape. She hopped to her feet, slung the bag over her shoulder, and hugged the egg against her chest. With a quick glance around to make sure she hadn't forgotten anything, Fayne returned to the road and began heading back the way she came.

On the way back to the city, Fayne spotted many Pokemon and animals, but only two were noteworthy. The first was a Lilligant as it strolled across the path at its own leisurely pace. Though the petrologist was in a hurry, she wasn't confident enough to push past the Pokemon, and she didn't want to risk slipping and causing further damage to the egg in her arms by attempting to go off-road. Instead, she followed at a safe distance for a while until the second Pokemon of note spotted the Lilligant and decided to attack. It was a Kangaskhan, on a rampage and lashing out at anyone in its sights. A quick glance at its empty pouch told Fayne that this mama had lost her baby.
Watching the two Pokemon go at it left the young researcher with a decision to make: to get involved or to slip past while they were distracted with one another. The egg in her arms needed a Pokecenter urgently, but there was a sense of duty to stop such a hostile creature, even if the Kangaskhan was grieving. Without wasting another moment considering her options, Fayne grabbed a pokeball off her belt and threw it into the air. Out popped Molokai, his attention instantly on the two battling Pokemon. "Ember, on both of them!" she commanded. And just like that, small flames scattered through the air and landed between the Kangaskhan and Lilligant.
The Lilligant, who already didn't want to fight and was merely doing so to defend itself, reeled back and shook the flames from its body before running away. The Kangaskhan, however, had a new target in her sights: Molokai and Fayne. "Smokescreen!" Molokai breathed out a cloud of black smoke that obscured the duo from sight. "Ember!" The Charmander did as he was told and spit fire into the inky darkness. A roar erupted as the Kangaskhan was hit, followed immediately by the cloud dispersing when the massive beasts emerged through it. She was rampaging, and if Molokai wasn't careful then he'd easily be trampled. "Climb up its tail and use Scratch!" Molokai skittered between his opponent's legs as she tried to use Comet Punch, he grabbed onto her tail, and slithered all the way up to her head then he proceeded to claw at her face. This, of course, only caused the Kangaskhan to grow angrier and angrier. She stomped, swished her tail, and tried to bat Molokai off her head. Fayne stepped away, intentionally keeping her distance and hugging the injured egg close to her chest. "Keep at it, buddy!" she hollered to Molokai, who was staying strong and clinging to the raging mother's horns.
"Ember!" And he did, at point-blank range. The Kangaskhan shook her head, let out a wail of sorrow, and turned back the way she'd come from. With a roar, she began racing back into the grasslands. "Molokai!" Fayne shouted, panic overcoming her at the thought of her starter getting carried off to the Kangaskhan's den. She raced to the side of the road and slide down a ditch in an attempt to pursue the Pokemon. She ran for mere seconds before stumbling and having to stop to catch her balance, lest drop the egg. "Molokai!" she shouted after the disappearing figure.
A weak chirp sounded from off to the right and Fayne whipped her head toward the noise. "Molokai?" She approached slowly before finally spotting a tiny orange lizard curled up in a patch of tall grass. "Oh, Arceus. Are you okay, buddy?" she asked as she dropped into a kneel beside him. The Charmander chirped faintly, but was clearly weakened from the encounter. "You did great. Rest now," Fayne said while pulling out a pokeball and recalling Molokai. With a heavy sigh, she stood and returned to the road where she finished making her way back to Bitch City.
