Elizabeth's prior attempt at challenging Hiro had been interrupted but the ranger had however managed to complete the gym trial. Thus when she was able to return the young woman was allowed to slip past through the hidden door to find the gym leader on the water field once more.
After some consideration the ranger had decided to play things straight this time. Just one on one battles with only three pokemon, nothing too fancy. Her team remained the same as they hadn't gotten a proper work out the first time and she was still playing the favorites of grass and electric vs water.
Liz tipped her hat to Hiro as she took her place at the challenger's stand. The ranger looked to the pikachu on her shoulder who nimbly scampered down to the platform before her. Liz sucked in a breath as she watched Hiro cautiously, entirely expecting a swampert, or possibly a ludicolo, to appear.
Hiro's Ludicolo is a patient and calm Pokemon, preferring to use its various forms of self-healing and damage over time to stall opponents out. In a pinch, it tends to dive beneath the waves, taking advantage of the extra healing time to get out of a bad spot.

"Ah, welcome back Elizabeth. I certainly hope everything worked out for you the other day."
Hiro greeted with his classic grin as he tossed out his choice of battle partner. Surprise, surprise, it was Ludicolo, as the ranger was expecting. Liz however had a surprise of her own up her sleeve. It was amazing how versatile pokemon could be if you gave them the right training. And the ranger had seriously over prepared for this battle.
"Thank you Hiro. And yes, just a little ranger trouble that needed looking into."
She dipped her head and returned his grin with a determined smile. Things should progress more smoothly this time, she'd made sure any urgent business could be covered by Raya while she was in the gym. Thus she ought to be able to focus fully on the battle here.
Anyway, the ranger looked to Cecylia who twitched her ears toward the duel type on the platform across from her. The pikachu was easily quicker than the ludicolo however it took Cecylia a moment to get her bearings due to her disability. Some might think it odd to allow a blind pikachu to battle, but Cecylia was insistent. She had both Liz's telepathic link and her keen hearing to guide her thus could still perform just as well as any sight capable pikachu. Cecylia definitely wasn't about to let something like eyesight hold her back.
"Alright Cee, let's hit hard and fast."
Everybody had their own battling style and while Liz sometimes tried to play the defensive, really she much preferred the more direct approach. From what she knew about her own ludicolo and grass types in general, was self healing was a big thing. If they could get in a good hit from the start it would make it that much harder for them to regain said health.
Cecylia flicked an ear back to Liz and nodded as she built up a charge in her tail then braced herself and released a blast of green energy, not the expected electrical energy as usually seen from a pikachu. The Signal Beam shot forward and struck Ludicolo full on causing a decent chunk of damage but not as much as the ranger would've liked. Ludicolo however responded by immediately Rain Dancing, the obvious course of action when one's special ability was Rain Dish.
"Ah ha! Signal Beam, now that makes things interesting."
Hiro commented with a grin sounding slightly impressed but also completely confident the surprise move wouldn't affect things. Hiro too obviously had a few choice moves in mind. Ludicolo glowed softly as the rain replenished the dual type. Here was where things got tricky. Liz had really wanted to face the ludicolo with Tansy, the poisonous grass type was better geared for this sort of challenge. But they'd simply have to work with what they had. What the ranger could do was at least hinder ludicolo some.
"Now Cee, let's lock him down."
Cecylia's cheeks sparked in response as she released a sudden wave of electrical energy. Now grass types might be immune to Stun Spore and take reduced damage from electrical attacks, but the basic Thunder Wave was still quite effective in seizing up their muscles. Ludicolo felt the paralysis grip him firmly and he struggled to remain in control of his own body.
Hiro gave a wry smirk, now for a pokemon who's specialty was dragging things out, paralysis wasn't too much of an issue. By now the rain had already refreshed half the ludicolo's health as. But at least with the seized up dual type he couldn't dish out the damage, for the moment. Liz would have to lay things on pretty hard to keep the ludicolo's energy down.
"We've only one real advantage here, keep whittling him down."
The pikachu reacted with the expected attack, Signal Beam, heading straight for the ludicolo.
"Keep it together Ludicolo, dodge if you can."
Hiro called with feeling to the dual type that was still struggling to overcome the paralysis. Ludicolo gave a last ditch effort to throw himself out of the path of the Signal Beam, only managing to deflect some of the attack's damage. Hiro nodded satisfied with the effort as Ludicolo took to the water with Dive.
"Hmm, nice try there Cee, looks like we're have to wait until he resurfaces. Though I suppose we could attempt electrifying the pool."
She mused the idea over, but wasn't sure it would do much to the ludicolo either way. Making snap decisions while also trying to be creative was tough. She figured best thing to do was use this to their advantage.
"Speed up, he'll likely come up swinging so we want to be ready to evade as best we can."
The ranger decided as Cecylia rapidly darted around the platform, jumping from island to island as she listened for the ludicolo's eventual return to the surface. Liz doubted Hiro would continue to play defense for much longer. The damage from the deflected Signal Beam had likely already been repaired. They were certainly in this for the long haul.
Ludicolo soon emerged with great flourish, grimacing as he fought through the paralysis but he still brought with him a wave of water that blasted across the island Cecylia was currently occupying and nearly sent her into the drink. Luckily she had a good foot hold and was able to remain above water though she was quite drenched and had taken a blow to her own health.
However now Ludicolo was back in range and Cecylia knew just what to do. She fired off another blast of Signal Beam, this time the paralysis managed to prevent the ludicolo from avoiding damage. It was slow going but little by little they were managing to bring down Ludicolo's own health. Hiro however wasn't just going to let them get away with that.
"Ludicolo you're doing fine, let's see how they like the taste of your Toxic."
The paralysis grip weakened long enough for Ludicolo to spray a putrid glob of purple spittle all over Cecylia. Though the pikachu tried to avoid the good the damp platform hindered her movement. The pikachu staggered as the poison hit her and Liz winced in sympathy. She could feel Hiro's confidence surge at the hit and she narrowed her eyes.
"You can fight through this Cee, stay with me."
The young woman encouraged trying to remain calm. Luckily Cecylia wasn't one to panic. With a burst of determination Cecylia launched another Signal Beam striking true. Ludicolo took the blow and was over come by a wave of paralysis giving Cecylia a chance at another Signal Beam.
Hiro was now looking a little less than thrilled and the ranger picked up on his waning confidence, though she also sense a bit of pride in his challenger. Of course as a gym leader it was their job to give trainers the battle of their lives, though ultimately the job was to eventually lose, but only to those who earned it. When a worthy trainer came along it wasn't surprising that a gym leader would be glad to have shared a battle with them. Of course whether Liz could be counted among such trainers however remained to be seen. She could only hope to earn Hiro's respect.
"Don't give them an inch Ludicolo, try to wrap this up with Mud Shot!"
Ah so this was Hiro's ace in the hole. Water and grass attacks didn't carry the same umph that a ground attack would against an electric type. Really, much like normal types, pure electric types like Cecylia only had one real weakness. This was what Elizabeth had been waiting for and why she'd wanted to get Cecylia's speed up.
"Watch out now, dodge it if you can!"
The ranger watched Cecylia dart from platform to platform once more, weakened from the poison but still managing to stay on her feet. Ludicolo fired off the mud shot and the speedy pikachu made a mad dash but slipped and slid into the water. Fortunately she did manage to avoid the attack. Cecylia scrambled back onto solid ground, panting from the effort.
"You got this Cee, one more Signal Beam."
Cecylia hurriedly charged up the bug type attack and released the blast of energy at Ludicolo. Paralysis siezed the water plant in place and the beam hit. Ludicolo shuddered from the attack and at last dropped to a knee. He made eye contact with Cecylia before succumbing to his injuries and falling unconscious on the island platform. Cecylia stood breathing heavily. She'd won but was quite worn out. Liz of course was grinning broadly as the pikachu back to her side.
"Do you need a rest Cee?"
The pikachu hesitated but shook her head. Though the poison was a hindrance, she wanted to at least try to stay in a bit longer. The ranger nodded, trusting the pikachu to know when to call it quits if she needed. The toxic's poison would only get worse but if Cecylia could get any damage in on the next opponent, even if she fainted at least she could make things a bit easier on Ayla or Tansy.
"Well, well, you managed to whittle down Ludicolo's health. Not bad, but let's see how you handle my next pokemon."
Hiro winked as he recalled the fallen ludicolo. Liz sucked in a breath and Cecylia stood ready, both watching warily for whatever the gym leader threw at them next, glad that it had at least stopped raining.

"You're on Lapras my dear."
Hiro called as he tossed out his next pokemon releasing her into the pool waters. Liz went a bit wide eyed as the tiniest lapras she'd ever seen appeared. The icy water type trilled playfully and splashed water all over her side of the field then shot Liz and Cecylia the sassiest look as if totally unimpressed by either the ranger or pikachu. Hiro smirked at the young woman's reaction, few could resist his lapras's charms.
"Okay, I have to admit, she's just adorable."
The ranger murmured with a small chuckle as she caught Hiro's eye. The gym leader looked pleased as he casually tossed the lapras's ball u and down in one hand. Lapras suddenly released a burst of ice beam at the water directly in front of Cecylia causing the pikachu to jump back a little to avoid being hit. Liz pursed her lips, unsure if that was just Lapras's way of saying hello or that she didn't like being called adorable.
"Thank you but don't underestimate her just because of her size!"
The gym leader warned with a wink as Liz smirked and nodded. Cecylia pinned an ear back not appreciative of the ice attack. The ranger eyed Lapras carefully a moment before looking to Cecylia.
"Looks like we'll have our hands full with this one. See if you can slow her down some with a Thunder Wave."
Cecylia nodded and began charging up the electrical wave. She was still hurting from the poison but managed to fire off the paralyzing wave. Hiro and Lapras seemed ready for this however as the lapras quickly countered with Confuse Ray. The purple energy of the ghost attack collided with the electric energy of the thunder wave managing to cancel them both out.
"It won't be so easy to get the drop on Lapras."
Hiro smirked proudly as Lapras trilled and eyed the pikachu haughtily. Cecylia panted a little and looked back at Liz. The poison was really starting to wear her down. The ranger nodded to the pikachu.
"Alright, see if you can try wrapping this up fast, go all out with a Thunderbolt."
Cecylia flicked her ears and crouched low to the platform as her cheeks sparked. Hiro narrowed his eyes and looked to Lapras. The powerful electrical attack arched through the air as Lapras fired off another wave of confusing energy. The attacks bypassed one another and both hit home. Lapras shuddered from the electrical attack whilst Cecylia staggered back as the confusion hit her hard.
The pikachu stumbled back then slipped again and smacked her face into the platform. Her hearing was going haywire and the telepathic connection was also making Liz dizzy from the confusion. The ranger winced and rubbed her forhead as she tried to focus. Lapras of course took this opportunity to strike and suddenly charged the pikachu head lowered.
The Drill Run bowled Cecylia over and threw her back into Liz's arms. The brunette barely managed to catch the unconscious pikachu as she was still gaining her own bearings from the Confuse Ray. She blinked and looked down at Cecylia's battered form with a soft sigh as she gently stroked the pikachu's head.
"That's alright girl, you did your best. Rest easy now and we'll let Ayla take it from here."
The ranger recalled Cecylia to her ball then switched to her second pokemon. While Ayla had a weakness to the frosty water type's ice attacks, the ranger wanted to keep Tansy in reserve for whatever final pokemon Hiro had up his sleeve. The tropius appeared on the scene and reared back to take in her surroundings. It was funny how Liz had brought Ayla and even Tansy due not just to their strong advantage over water types but also as the two of them would've been a better fit for battling the ludicolo. Still Cecylia had cleared a path for the other two and hopefully the tropius would be able to do the same with Lapras.
"Your pikachu held her own well, but Lapras isn't easy to take down. Hope your tropius is ready for us!"
Hiro stated with a small smirk as he gave an approving nod to Lapras. The two pokemon squared off as they readied themselves for the next round of battle.

"You're going to have to be extra careful Ayla and watch for any Ice attacks."
The ranger knew this wouldn't be as easy as it looked. Hiro knew what he was doing and his pokemon were obviously well trained. Elizabeth just had to keep from getting too cocky. She watched the lapras warily as Ayla stretched out her wings. The match ups so far hadn't really been what the ranger had initially envisioned. The plan had been if ludicolo had shown then Ayla or Tansy were to be the counter, their flying and poison type moves being perfect against the part grass type. But Cecylia had held her own with Signal Beam which still did a nice number on the dual type. And it was Cecylia who should've faced off with Lapras as any ice type moves wouldn't have been quite as troublesome to the electric type.
But of course that was the beautiful of pokemon battling. It never went as you expected. Pokemon were amazingly versatile creatures. Ludicolo and Lapras had both been prepared with ground type attacks to handle an electric type like pikachu. Only fitting as electric was an obvious counter to water types. Then with Lapras's natural ice typing grass types were forced onto a level playing field. So one always had to be prepared, and if Liz was anything, she tried always to be prepared. Four or so years of military service tended to have that affect on a person.
"Well then my lovely let's get things started."
Hiro called to his Lapras who once more fired off the purple Confuse Ray. Liz shook her head at Alya who instinctively leaped into the air and pulled a tight turn, Dragon Dancing out of the path of the confusing ray. The tropius preferred an open sky but the gym's interior was designed for a decent amount of maneuverability. Of course the real strength lied in the pool that was deep and wide with just the few sparse island platforms darting the top.
"Fancy moves though Lapras can do that too."
Hiro smirked as Lapras twisted and danced her way across the pool her own pace quickening with each movement. Liz looked to Ayla and nodded as the tropius shot to the ceiling then spread her wings and an amazingly relaxing and delicious smell filled the air. Swirls of soft pink dust covered the pool as Sweet Scent did it's work causing Lapras to grow placid and sluggish.
"Nice, soften her up a little. Now let's brighten things up."
The tropius then pulled a tight circle and soft, warm light began radiating from the flier. The sunbeams through the few windows grew in intensity bathing them all in white hot sunlight. The Sunny Day set the tone though meanwhile Lapras was focusing on her target.
Suddenly an icy blast shot passed Ayla clipping the tropius's wing. She winced as her wing froze up and the tropius spiraled back down to an island platform. She was able to direct her flight enough so as to not fall in the water but her wing was stiff from the ice. Hiro winked at Lapras pleased with the icy water type had managed to ground the grass flier, for now.
"Hang in there, Leaf Storm."
The ranger instructed as Ayla lashed out and whipped up a wild flurry of leaves. The field was nearly covered as the Leaf Storm pelted the lapras who was battered by the cutting leaves. Hiro narrowed his eyes as Liz smirked. Blow for blow, it only seemed fitting. The gym leader dipped his head to Liz but turned his gaze back to Lapras.
"Go ahead and patch yourself up Lapras."
Soft droplets of water rose from the pool and enveloped the lapras repairing some of the damage caused by the leaf storm. Ayla stretched her wing as the ice began to melt. She wasn't going to stop pressing her advantage however and leaped into the air. Her wing was still a touch stiff but usable and the tropius spun about then struck out with Leaf Blade. A slicing green blade slashed across the lapras removing the healing the life dew had brought. Lapras thrust back away from the tropius however she was still sluggish from the sweet scent.
"Don't let her get away with that, Ancient Power!"
"Synthesis quick."
Liz and Hiro gave their orders rapidly and both pokemon moved to comply. Ayla took advantage of the sunlight and let it mend the damage from the previous icey attack. However as she focused on healing, Lapras released a barrage of materialized small rocks that battered Ayla in mid air. The Synthesis had done it's job however and kept her in on the field but she was beginning to look worn.
"Alright! Don't back down now, Ice Beam once more!"
"Let it all out Solar Beam!"
Both pokemon fired off their special attacks the two powerful forces of grass and ice energy racing across the water field. Each collided with the other and a massive explosion occured that flung Ayla against a wall and Lapras out of the pool. Water sprayed everywhere and Liz ducked to the side to brace herself against the backlash from the blast as did Hiro. Both ranger and gym leader slowly looked up to see the water settled and the air cleared. Ayla was down for the count as was Lapras both rendered unconcious.
"Well, well, that was a surprising turn of events. But your Tropius fought hard."
"Thank you. And your little Lapras was quite impressive."
The two trainers showed their mutual respect for one another's pokemon. Liz pulled out the tropius's pokeball and recalled her to it's confines where she could rest. The sunlight began to fade as she gripped hold of Tansy's pokeball, a standard starter ball etched with a single leaf, and gave it a soft kiss before tossing it out onto the field. The large venusaur burst onto the scene with a roar and slammed a heavy foot onto the platform.
"Just one left to go huh? This isn't over yet."
The ranger grinned at Hiro who returned it with a nod and a smirk of his own. The gym leader recalled his own fallen companion then chose his next pokemon. With a flourish he gave the ball and toss and released it's occupant onto the field. The gym leader leveled his gaze at Liz and grinned.
"Oh no, it certainly isn't. Let's see what else you've got!"

When the empoleon appeared on the water field the ranger's face fell. Now this could be problematic. She had tried to anticipate all the possible pokemon the gym leader might throw at her yet she hadn't quite factored in the steely water type. Now had it been Cecylia who was facing the regal penguin things would've been smoother. Honestly none of this fight had gone the way she'd hoped or intended.
Tansy's grass attacks would be much less powerful against the part steel type, not to mention her poison was completely useless. She had only one attack that could prove viable against the empoleon but it would certainly take a lot out of her using it. If Liz couldn't control this battlefield, she highly doubted Tansy could defeat the empoleon alone.
"Ah you seem worried. Was my Empoleon a bit of a surprise for you?"
Hiro chuckled as he gazed down fondly at the regal water bird. Liz pursed her lips, she didn't want to let on her concern regarding the match up between the venusaur and the empoleon. She could think of only one solid strategy to keep the empoleon from doing much damage. It didn't seem like the most fair way of fighting, but in a gym battle you did what you had to. Plus it would certainly be utilizing a grass type's strength.
"Well what are we waiting for? Empoleon, Swords Dance!"
"Alright Tans, we're going to have to stall him as long as we can, just enough for you to get powered up. Sleep Powder."
The venusaur responded instantly while the empoleon summoned the familiar spectral swords. Meanwhile the air filled with a soft blue powder that gently coated the empoleon and he soon slumped over, fast asleep. The ranger let out a breath which she'd unconsciously been holding since the penguin had first appeared. Now she had to move quickly, least the bird wake before they were ready.
"Hmm, not surprising. Don't think that'll save you though. Empoleon wake up and use Swagger!"
"Hurry and brighten things up in here!"
Tansy gazed up at the ceiling where the light filtered in the window. The seed in her bloom began to glow bright with warm light and the field was once again bathed in sunlight. All eyes flicked to empoleon watching to see if he would wake, but alas it seemed he was deep asleep.
"Don't get cocky now, this won't stop us. Swagger now Empoleon!"
"Stay calm and use Growth. We need all the oomph we can get."
Tansy's bloom began glowing with brilliant green light that engulfed her whole body and the flower appeared to swell from the sunlight. Her strength greatly increased and on top of that she felt a rush of speed course through her as Chlorophyll became active beneath the warm sun. She then fixated her gaze warily on the slumbering empoleon. However the regal penguin still did not awaken. Hiro gazed down at the sleeping water bird with a bit of frustration.
"Empoleon! You need to wake up now and use Double Team!"
The ranger felt a strange sense of calm come over her and Tansy. The venusaur looked back to her and she nodded her confidence slowly growing once more. She doubted however that the empoleon would sleep through what was coming next.
The venusaur crouched low then shoved herself off the ground just managing to launch herself a few feet into the air, then landed with a crash back onto the island platform. The platform and the water around her all surged and roiled from the earthquake that shook the entire gym. Empoleon was jostled from his own platform and jerked up wide awake. Frantically he leaped around using Double Team and making multiple copies of himself.
"Ah ha! Good job waking up Empoleon. Now, let's try that Swagger once more!"
"Quick! Sleep Powder again!"
The ranger almost shouted in her mind to Tansy though she knew what the venusaur was already expecting that. The soft blue powder sprinkled across the room but ultimately missed it's target as the multiple copies of the empoleon averted the powder's effects. Empoleon now however puffed himself up and did a come hither motion at Tansy causing the venusaur to go into an irrational rage.
"Damn, hang in there Tans!"
"Ah ha! See now that's how it's done."
Hiro seemed pleased they'd managed to one up the ranger. Tansy stumbled about on the platform her vision obscured by the confusion. Liz grabbed her head with one hand, being psychically and empathically connected to a confused pokemon was nearly migraine inducing. She remained steadfast though and grit her teeth as she tried to break through the strange mentality afflicting the venusaur.
"Tans, I'm here. Stay with me. Empoleon's about to attack, you need to use Sleep Powder now."
For a brief moment the ranger felt as though she'd lost Tansy yet with a sudden 'Saur!' the venusaur threw back her head and shook off the confusion. She hurriedly scattered the blue powder once more this time managing to stick to the empoleon. Again he slumped down to sleep on the platform.
"Damn it not again. You're certainly using that grass stall tactic to your advantage."
Liz grimaced as her head was still spinning but she just nodded to Tansy who knew what to do. The venusaur felt the effects of the sunlight began to wane and quickly used the last of the fading light to empower herself fully with a final growth. The swagger had only managed to increase her strength even more and now she was as strong as she could get.
"Let's do it Empoleon! Swords Dance!"
Yet the empoleon still slept. Hiro looked annoyed as he gave Liz a halfhearted smirk. He didn't like being beaten at his own stall game. The ranger kept her focus on the fight though, she could never be quite sure when the empoleon would be back in the fight. The sunlight faded as did the affects of chlorophyll thus Tansy quickly summoned more of the sun's energy. However the change in light seemed to rouse the empoleon who struggled to his feet.
"That's how you do it. Let's try to do some damage this time. Ice Beam!"
It seemed Hiro was changing tactics, if he couldn't play the stall game, then he'd have to get in as many hits as he could. Tansy's burst of speed had faded with the chlorophyll and she was unable to out maneuver the blast of ice beam. The damage was rough but survivable and at least it didn't freeze.
"That's more like it. Now Empoleon, let's try that Swords Dance again."
"Don't let him. Let's finish this."
The sunlight surged once more and again Tansy's speed returned. She gave a low below and this time simply raised a large limb then slammed it on the ground. The platform nearly cracked as the earthquake rolled out from her and barreled down toward the empoleon. The super effective attack hit full force, and powered up by multiple growths and swagger, made sure that this time when the empoleon was knocked down he did not get up again.
Both the venusaur and ranger exchanged looks then gazed up at Hiro. The water gym leader looked surprised but simply shrugged and recalled the fallen steel penguin. He looked to Liz then gave her a broad grin as he crossed the water field, hopping easily from island to island, then landed at the challenger's stand.
"Well I must say, I had hoped for a little more of a grand finale."
Hiro chuckled as he offered a hand to Elizabeth. The ranger gave him a sheepish grin as she shook his hand then patted Tansy who'd pressed herself against the young woman's side. Hiro smirked at the venusaur and shook his head.
"I've got to hand it to you though, you sure know your type advantages and how to utilize a grass type's unique skills."
"It was an honor to battle you Hiro. I learned a lot and I hope I'll be able to continue facing more gym leaders."
Liz dipped her head respectfully. Hiro had definitely forced her to try and think a little more out of the box. Battling hard and fast was more her usual style, use the best type advantage moves and beat them down as quick as you could. However having to stall and build up her strength wasn't exactly her usual method. She was glad she'd come prepared, without her pokemon knowing key moves they likely wouldn't have done half as well.
"Well I suppose I should make it official. Ranger Elizabeth Waters, you have defeated the Bass City Water Gym and have earned this Surf Badge."
He pressed the badge into her palm and she couldn't help the wide grin that spread over her features. Though this wasn't the first time she'd won a badge it still left a happy tingle of pride and accomplishment. Tansy reached a vine over to poke at the badge then nodded happily in approval.
"Well look at that Tansy, our very first Arciel Region Gym Badge."
Tansy the Venusaur Stun Locked Sleep Powdered Hiro's Empoleon into defeat!
